Intro

Introducing Amy Rose, Metal Sonic, and the Time Stones this is the first and only Sonic game to come out for Sega CD, with new characters, 3 endings, and anime entrances and closings this is considered by Sonic fans as one of the best Sonic games of all time! It came out in November of 1993, along with Sonic Spinball and was just rereleased for the PC in 1995, and the features are the same, the codes, the characters, everything. The only difference is that this time around they got Amy Rose’s name right in the instruction booklet. This game presents time travel; Sonic can go into the past, present, and future realities of each zone! The future depends on whether you trash Robotnik’s roboticizer in the past of each act; if you do, the future will be a good future where the animals are allowed to run free. If not, it will be a bad future where Robotnik is allowed to run amok. If you get the Roboticizers in the past of every act, you will see the good ending of the game. Otherwise, you’ll see the bad ending…This game consists of the Palmtree Panic Zone, Collision Chaos Zone, Tidal Tempest Zone, Quartz Quadrant Zone, Wacky Workbench Zone, Stardust Speedway Zone – possibly the most famous Sonic Zone and the race with Metal Sonic – and the final confrontation with Robotnik, The Metallic Madness Zone!

Story

Dr. Robotnik’s latest scheme involves the mysterious Little Planet, which appears on the last month of every year over Never Lake. The Little Planet houses the seven Time Stones, with which the holder obtains the ability to travel through time and space. With the control of time, nothing could stop the Eggman! Not to freak, because Sonic the Hedgehog is on the case! Unfortunately, Robotnik has decided to unleash Metal Sonic to keep the hedgehog hero at bay; and kidnap Amy Rose to further complicate the problem. Infact, Robotnik’s already made use of the Little Planet’s lack of any boundaries on time, and has placed robot machines in the past so he controls the future. Now Sonic’s got to stop Robotnik, destroy the robot machines, collect the seven Time Stones, save Amy Rose, and deal with Metal Sonic on a tiny planet where time has no meaning. A hedgehog’s work is never done….

ReRelease

This game has been rereleased in the modern era! In an updated version headed by Christian Whitehead, we are treated with a playable Tails that is unlocked upon completing the game. Also included are Japanese AND US soundtracks. You are given the option to choose which one you would like to listen to. You can now play this on iOS, Android, XBox Live Arcade and PSN.

We also have this little number. Apparently it was planned that another zone was going to be added but Sega didn’t want it to deviate too far from the original so it was scrapped.

    Story

    English manual transcript

    Find the Chaos Emeralds!

Miles “Tails” Prower, the Fox, can’t sit still when Sonic’s around. Ever since Miles was a baby fox, he’s dreamed of being like Sonic. He loves to run after Sonic, waving his 2 tails behind him, trying to keep up with his hero!

Mostly, Sonic lets him trail along. But sometimes, just to show off, Sonic explodes in a burst of super speed and leaves him behind. But Miles doesn’t give up. He whirls his tails like a helicopter rotor and takes off flying until he catches up!

All the animals call Miles by his nickname, “Tails,” because of his 2 special tails. And one day the saw an astonishing feat…

They were all together in the forest, watching Sonic perform. Sonic would run, spin and jump in his Super Spin Attack. Then “Tails” would whirl like a turbo engine and blast off in his Super Dash Attack. What a show-off!

Suddenly, “Tails” just couldn’t help himself. He took a running start, curled up his tails and – whoosh – he was spinning like Sonic!

But now something frightening is happening. Sonic’s friends are disappearing. In their place, nasty metal robots are popping up all over the island. The mad scientist Dr. Robotnik is at it again!

This time, Robotnik’s planning a global disaster. He needs workers to create a doomsday machine that can take over the world. So he’s trapping all the animals, turning them into robots, and forcing them to build his ultimate weapon, the Death Egg!

Robotnik now rules the factories, refineries and cities! He’s grabbed control of everything – except the 7 Chaos Emeralds. These magnificent gems are believed to hold exceptional powers. With them, Robotnik could have the entire world in his grasp. And he’d never let go!

The Chaos Emeralds are buried somewhere on the island. Only one tough dude with spiky hair has the speed to find them first!

Help Sonic stop the devious scheme of the demented scientist! Spin like a speedball through space. Grab Power Sneakers and loop ’til you’re dizzy. Twirl over twisting speedways and rocket through tunnels. Balance and blast across a bubbling ocean of oil!

Find the Emeralds, free the animals, and squash Robotnik forever!

    Japanese manual translation

Sonic the Hedgehog is always searching for new adventure in his life. Today, luck was on his side; Sonic had discovered a beautiful, lush island, rich with greenery and pleasing to the senses.

“All right!” Sonic thought to himself. “I’ll rest here for a while.”

The white smoke escaping from Sonic’s plane “The Tornado” drew a long arch in the sky, its shadow stretching out over the length of the island.

The legend of Westside Island, the Island of Illusion, tells that many years ago, a people here based the development of their civilisation on a collection of strange stones, and employed their greatest philosophers to theorise on their true power. In order to gain these powers, some attempted to channel the energy of the stones for their own evil intents. These attempts, however, came to naught.

Since, the legends tell that the stones have been sealed by the gods somewhere on this island.

Days passed since Sonic landed on the island. One day, while Sonic explored a region of the island, he noticed that he was being watched by someone behind him. He turned around and saw that a small fox had been secretly following him. Seeing Sonic’s face, the startled fox shyly hid in the shade of a coconut tree. Ignoring the fox, Sonic began to run. But the fox, seeing him leaving, started running after him with all his strength.

Seeing the determination on his face, Sonic changed his mind about the little fox. “I may as well let him follow me,” he said to himself, and stopped running. He decided to make friends with the young fox.

Miles Prower, the small fox, sported two bushy tails instead of one. For this reason, the animals of Westside Island nicknamed him “Tails”. Miles was happy with his life, but after meeting Sonic his view changed. He made a decision to improve his skills, and so he began to hang around Sonic all day long.

One early afternoon, Miles discovered a superb plane resting on the beach; he rushed to get a closer look at it. The curving outline of the plane’s sleek, streamlined body impressed him. It was just the kind of vehicle Miles liked. He strolled towards the front of the plane, admiring its impressive fuselage. He stopped as he saw Sonic asleep in the cockpit. He quickly scampered back to the rear, hoping not to wake him.

Suddenly, Miles saw a brief flash of light coming from the direction of the nearby woods. Without any further warning, rumbling explosions and columns of flame rose above the trees, scattering stones, leaves and branches in all directions. Miles watched in terror as the spectacle unfolded before his eyes. From within the burning red forest, an army of robots marched forth, cluttering the earth.

Miles watched, stunned, as the explosions continued. But even Miles in his fear did not realise the full scope of the situation. Sonic watched the burning forest with anger in his eyes.

“Eggman…” Sonic breathed, remembering his archenemy with contempt. He jumped down onto the beach and gazed up at the wood beyond. Something was beginning. Having fainted for a few seconds, Miles collected himself and ran to catch up with Sonic.

“Da-Ha ha ha ha!!” The loud laughter echoed around the wood; Doctor Eggman was nearby.

“Finally, my plan is underway! The CHAOS EMERALDS sleep somewhere on Westside Island, the Island of Illusion, so it will be easy to expel my adversary Sonic! Soon, my supreme weapon, The Death Egg, will be launched into space. Just you wait, Sonic! This time, THIS time I will gather the Chaos Emeralds, and with their power I will defeat you! Thus, I, Dr. Eggman, shall become master of this world! Daa-HA HA HA!!”

The players are set, the adventure and emotion now begin. Let’s go!

    Gameplay

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was the first home Sonic game that featured two simultaneous characters (Sonic and Tails) playing at once. It was also the first in the series to have a two-player mode, both competitive and co-operative.

Sonic 2 was also the first game to have the now standard seven Chaos Emeralds as opposed to six. This also brought about the first appearance of Super Sonic. Super Sonic is an even faster version of Sonic who is invincible, accessible by getting all the Emeralds in the game then getting 50 rings. He lasted as long as you had rings to keep him going, but the number you have depletes by one a second.
The game also introduced the popular ‘chute’ style special stages. These have since appeared in Sonic 3D on the Saturn and Sonic Pocket Adventure on the Neo Geo Pocket Color.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on the Genesis/Mega Drive was not Tails’ first appearance. He appeared first a short while before in the Game Gear game of the same name, not as a playable character but as a plot device.

The Sonic Jam version of Sonic 2 has a continue feature, extra ‘easy’ or ‘normal’ modes (as opposed to the standard ‘original’) and an option to play only the special stages.

    Sonic 2 Beta

The infamous ‘beta’ (prototype version) of Sonic 2 contained many completely different zones, including the Hidden Palace Zone, which was redesigned and turned up in Sonic & Knuckles. A large amount of publicity saw a lot of the prototype zones that didn’t make it into game printed in many gaming magazines and the like, making fans wonder what happened to them. The Sonic 2 beta has captured the imagination of many Sonic fans.

The release itself was extremely hyped, all culminating on ‘Sonic 2sday’, a large event celebrating the games release. To this day, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is one of the highest selling and most critically acclaimed Sonic games ever.

    References

There are references-a-plenty in Sonic 2. The most obvious is the ‘I-can’t-believe-Lucas-didn’t-Sue’ Death Egg. The Death Egg was homage to the Death Star space station that appears in Star Wars series. The design is even a pastiche, with the same shape and familiar dish shaped eyes. I don’t think the original Death Star had a moustache, though.

The Wing Fortress Zone is frighteningly similar to the airbase stage (level three) of The Revenge of Shinobi (1988), another SEGA game on the Mega Drive/Genesis. The boss even features a ceiling mounted laser!

The appearance of Super Sonic is a nod to the popular Dragon Ball manga/anime. In Dragon Ball, the main character named Goku has the ability to change his hair gold (the same effect that Sonic gets on his quills) and become a ‘Super Saiyan’, making him super strong.

Tails’ oddest detail (apart the fact that he’s bipedal, which we’ll let slide) of having two tails refers to the fact that in Japanese legend, foxes are magical and mystical creatures – some of which grow extra tails. Apparently, they can be quite mischievous too.

    More

Sonic CD, a game which came out a year after Sonic 2, was apparently in development at the same time as the sequel. This explains why the game has elements like the spin dash but has the graphical style of Sonic 1. It also explains the lack of Tails in the game, and perhaps the rumours that early versions of Sonic 2 had time-travelling elements.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 can be ‘locked on’ to Sonic and Knuckles, allowing you to play through the whole game as the red one himself. The game itself is identical, but Knuckles’ abilities make it play in an entirely different way. Gliding and climbing let you find areas that Sonic or Tails could never reach, and Knuckles’ lower jumping height makes certain areas tricky (last boss, anyone?).

Sound test track #10 will play a tune that is not in any levels in the game. It’s actually from the canned Hidden Palace level.

    Intro

Even though called Sonic 3 this is the fourth installment in his series of Sega Genesis games. This game was released on February 2, 1994, “Hedgehog” Day. The zones in this game may only be 2 acts, but the acts were twice as big as the ones in Sonic 2. Therefore there was a lot more to discover in this game. Just realize that if you’re locking on Sonic and Knuckles you’ll be heading over ground not mentioned in here sometimes. Doctor Robotnik has returned but this time he’s not alone….this time he’s brought Knuckles The Echidna and rebuilt his greatest invention – The Death Egg!!! Enjoy!

    Story

Whatever happened to the Death Egg after Sonic 2? After getting knocked out of the sky along with his entire Death Egg ship, Dr. Robotnik crash-landed on a mysterious Floating Island where he quickly meets Knuckles the Echidna, last of a lost civilization and guardian of the Floating Island – as well as a giant emerald better known as the mysterious “Master Emerald”. The Eggman dupes Knuckles into thinking that Sonic and Tails are the bad guys, and learns that a giant Master Emerald keeps the island afloat. If he could get this Master Emerald, there would be no need for regular chaos emeralds as he would have a new source of Death Egg fuel – Forever! And while Knuckles is doing the rounds with Sonic and Tails, the Doc should have plenty of time to repair his Death Egg, as well as search for this Master Emerald…..

After knocking Robotnik’s recently re-launched Death Egg back outta the sky before it even left the atmosphere, the explosion sent Sonic and Tails back down onto Floating Island. They landed deep in the Mushroom Hills, while the Death Egg crash-landed on the top of Floating Island’s largest volcano. Now there is no choice: Robotnik needs the Master Emerald to get his Death Egg back up and running, and Sonic knows it.

While Sonic and Tails are off galavanting around the Floating Island, someone else is busy making sure they don’t get thier hands on the master Emerald – his name is Knuckles and right now he doesn’t realise he’s being duped by Doctor Robotnik! Knuckles, a bit peeved with all the trouble by this point, decides it’s time to stop taking names and start handing out punishments. Little does he know that even though he won’t be battling Robotnik – he’ll face a foe just as deadly! Follow Knux as he makes Sonic’s life a living pain as youre introduced to the secret passages on the Isle unnaccessible by Sonic as well as later on chasing the mysterious “Eggbot” that is trying to do away with you….

Now it’s a mad three-sided race to the Master Emerald, and there can only be one victor….

  • Lock-On Technology

Released on October 14, 1994, Sonic and Knuckles was a revolutionary game because it was the first (and only game so far) containing Lock On Technology, which gave it the ability to hook up to other games. In this case, you could plug Sonic 2 or 3 into the top of the Sonic and Knuckles cartridge to play as Knuckles in those games. It boosted Sonic 3 even farther, Knuckles traveled over new ground in some zones and now there were 14 emeralds. Because of there being 14, you could now access Hyper Sonic, Hyper Knuckles, and Super Tails. You can also stick Sonic and Knuckles in the Genesis and play it on its own. The zones are about the same size as the ones in Sonic 3, and most of them have 2 acts. Some only have 1. Like Sonic 3, there is a boss in every act, except for Hidden Palace Zone.

Knux isn’t available in these two games – BUT GET THIS remember the special stages in Sonic 3? Well it seems that Sonic Team added a little secret – when certain codes are programmed into Sonic and Knux when attached to these two games you get a SLEW of special stages – in count there are possibly over 32,000 bonus rounds available for play seeing as how they take up little space to program!!!! To play the bonus rounds at any time, insert any game into your Sonic & Knuckles cartridge along with said cartridge – Sonic 1 or Sonic Spinball. (***NOTE*** – Only one bonus game is available with Sonic Spinball but its a doozy!!!!!!! ) When the “No Way” message appears, hold A + B + C and press Start. If you do this with the original Sonic game you can play the levels in order and will be given a password to save your progress. And heres one thing – they get harder and harder and harder the further you go – I specifically remember one where you have to do nearly 95% of the board backwards!!!!

Note: In case you’re wondering, I’ve left out the passwords deliberately. Like I said – there are possibly over 32,000 playable bonus levels encoded in Sonic & Knuckles. I can’t possibly list them all on the page, nor is there much point to doing so since the levels are nearly identical even though they get harder and harder and harder. Thank you.

You’ve met Knux in Sonic 3 but what if he was in Sonic 2? Could he handle being in Sonic’s shoes on what is considered one of Sonic’s greatest games? Thats the premise of Sonic 2 and Knuckles as Knux takes on the levels of Sonic The Hedgehog 2 !!!

Basically there isnt much of anything different here except your piloting Knux through the levels instead of Sonic – however that doesnt mean you wont have problems. Knux can’t jump near as high as Sonic so this makes it quite harder than before! MOST notably when you get to the Death Egg Zone. So for reasonably obvious purposes you can find the walkthrough of Death Egg located here and on the Sonic and Knuckles page.

Death Egg Zone – Knuckles Only

This is the ONLY way to beat Robotnik in his super suit using Knuckles – His jumping ability is not good AND time is NOT on your side so this is MUCH harder. Go to the 4th or 5th window from the left when the cross-hairs are on you. When he’s ready to slam down, spindash to the right. He will land and try to shoot his arms at you, but they won’t reach. He will fly back up, and do it again. Go back to the same place. When the cross-hairs are locked on, walk away to the right side. He will land and the top of the suit will come down. Hit him in the chest when it comes all the way down. Remember only attack Robotnik every other time he lands. After you’ve beaten him, sit back and watch the Death Egg explode and then the ending of Sonic 2.

    Level Select

Level Select / Sound Test (Sonic 3 & Knuckles, or Sonic & Knuckles Alone)

Start Mushroom Hill or Angel Island. For Angel Island grab a vine – For Mushroom Hill grab a Pull-Up machine. (An easy one to find is in Sonic and Tails’ version of Act 1. It’s just after the box with the power sneakers and the Madmole.) Hang from the vine/machine and press left left left, right right right, up up up. You should hear a ring sound. Pause the game and press A to reset to the title screen.

Construction / Debug Mode (Sonic 3 & Knuckles)
To activate Debug, siply do the Level Select code in both Angel Island and Mushroom Hill.
Debug is not quite the same as it was in the previous Sonic games. You still press B to use Debug, A to place items, and C to cycle between items. However, when Debug isn’t being use, the game timer is not messed up, and pressing A will cause gravity to reverse like it does in Death Egg Zone Act 2.

Level Select / Sound Test (Sonic 3)
When the Sega logo comes up, just after the “Sega” theme is sung and the screen begins to turn black, quickly press: Up, Up, Down, Down, Up, Up, Up, Up to the beat of the drums. You should hear a ring chime if you did it correctly. A new Sound Test option should appear at the title screen.
The Flying Battery, Mushroom Hill, and Sandopolis Zones are visible on the Level Select screen, but can’t be played without Lock-On. Those levels were originally intended for Sonic 3, but were pulled in order to release the game on time.

Construction / Debug Mode (Sonic 3)
Enter the Level Select code, then press A + Start to choose your starting level. Once the action starts, press B to change into an item, A to cycle between the available items, and C to place an item.
Alternatively, turn on the Genesis and press Up, Up, Down, Down, Up, Up Up before Sonic gets fully on screen.

    Sonic 2 -> Sonic 3 Cheat (Sonic 3 – duh)
If you can’t do the super-tough Level Select code for Sonic 3, there is an alternative.
(WARNING: I’m not sure if this code is healthy for your Genesis or not, but it is not representative of recommended use, so I strongly recommend that you do not use it. Keep trying the regular Level Select code, or just do themuch easier Sonic 3 & Knuckles Level Select instead.)
Insert Sonic 2 and enter the Sonic 2 Level Select (play sounds 19, 65, 09, and 17). Return to the title screen, hold A and press Start. To transfer this to Sonic 3, hold A and carefully remove the cartridge without turning off the Genesis. Insert Sonic 3 and press Reset. Finally, release A and press Down twice at the main menu.

    Intro

Besides featuring a great game overall, SA2 really allows you to play the game any way you want, much like the best of the 2D Sonic games. It does this with an incredibly well-designed replay system featuring tons of variations on level selects and a wide variety of emblem games. There are 5 missions in each level, and you get a ranking for each one you complete. E rankings are easy to complete for even a beginning gamer, and A rankings are a challenge even for a master.

The basic concept is that you play 2 differet sides of the same adventure – Hero and Dark. Hero Side includes Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, with Amy as a non-playable story character. Dark Side includes the now-playable Eggman, and 2 new characters, Shadow The Hedgehog and Rouge The Bat.

    Story

Dr.Eggman’s grandfather, Professor Gerald Robotnik, had worked on a top secret project for the military agency GUN over 50 years ago. Dr. Eggman, in his Egg Walker, breaks into GUN headquarters to discover what the weapon is. He finds a black hedgehog named Shadow who has an incredible resemblance to Sonic. After they escape from the military facility, Sonic is captured by GUN. He escapes and finds that he has been mistakeen for Shadow, who calls himself the “Ultimate Life Form” and shows off his ability to manipulate time with “Chaos Control.” Sonic is recaptured by GUN but then rescued by Amy and Tails, who is sporting his new upgraded Tornado model. Meanwhie, Knuckles wards off a jewel thief by the name of Rouge The Bat who wants the Master Emerald. Eggman shows up to steal it himself, but Knuckles breaks it instead. And all this is in 4 levels.

Sonic Adventure 2 has been rereleased for XBox Live Arcade and the PS Network in October 2012. In the new release, it is now HD (720p) with also the addition of leaderboards. It can be purchased for $9.99 on PSN and 800 MSP for XBox Live Arcade. For an additional $3/240MSP, you unlock the Gamecube version.

It is noteworthy that in this rerelease, there is no new way to migrate your chao in or out of the game. Those features have been entirely taken out.

Differences between Gamecube version and Dreamcast version

  • The graphics are a bit clearer and more vibrant
  • New rendered intro has been added
  • 2-player mode has been expanded
  • The hidden Bigs have been taken out of the game for some unknown reason. (With exception in the rerelease of the game)
  • You can FINALLY see Chao stats in-game rather than having to load Chao into the VMU to view their stats.
  • Chao can now be loaded into Sonic Advance for Gameboy Advance rather than the VMU. Chao from Sonic Advance can also be loaded into SA2: Battle.
  • The Chao black market (available for SA2 on the SA2 website) is now included in-game and you can buy Chao upgrades with rings.
  • There are many more levels available for all 3 of the 2-Player modes from SA2.
  • A 2-Player Chao fighting game has been added. Unfortunately, it’s all based on stats and fairly passive.
  • Amy, Metal Sonic, Chao Walker, Tikal, and Chaos 0, previously available as hidden characters in SA2, are now available automatically. Big has been replaced by a Dark Chao Walker. In addition, while the SA2 versions were just alternate sprites for the main cast, the SA2: Battle version of each character have unique attacks and different stats for top speed and acceleration.

    Genre: 3D Platformer

    Intro

Sonic Heroes is the first Sonic game to feature the ability to switch between 3 different characters on the fly. You choose between 4 different teams. Each has a speed type, fly type and power type

    Story

Tails and Knuckles come to Sonic with a letter from Eggman.

    Dear Sonic Heroes,

Guess what, Sonic Heroes? I’ve finally developed the ultimate weapon! In three days I’ll conquer the world! Think you can stop me?

    Sincerely,

    Eggman

Of course, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles accept this challenge.

    Team Dark

Rouge enters Eggman’s base in her hunt for jewels and finds Shadow and Omega sealed in capsules. Shadow has amnesia and doesn’t know how he survived the fight with Biolizard. He wants to find Eggman and find out why he was in that capsule. Omega is enraged at Eggman for putting him in a capsule, and the 3 join forces to fight their former employer.

    Team Rose

When she sees Sonic’s picture in the newspaper, Amy can’t sit still. Big wants to find Froggy and Cream is looking for Cheese’s brother Chocolate, so they decide to search together.

    Team Chaotix

The Chaotix detective agency receives any request if there is ample reward. Their latest job offer is suspicious, but the deal is too sweet to refuse.

    Other

    Teams

Team Sonic – Sonic, Tails, Knuckles

Team Dark – Shadow, Rouge, E123 Omega

Team Rose – Amy, Cream, Big

Team Chaotix – Espio, Charmy, Vector

    Team Radical

Spunkie, Bunkie, and Ted, 3 wannabe heroes, were supposedly posing as a 5th team in the game. Rumors of a 5th team came from several sources, and the names are from the official Playstation magazine. Many guessed that the names were fake, but the magazine offered no hint that they were joking.

    Moves

    Speed Formation

  • Homing Spin (press A while jumping) – Home in on an enemy or object. If the other team members are right behind the speed character, all 3 do a Homing Spin, so you can do triple damage if you time it right.
  • Triangle Jump (aim a homing attack at a wall, and press A after landing) – A wall kick. The speed character jumps horizontally and forward off a wall. You can jump again after landing on another wall. It’s generally used to cross gaps by jumping between 2 nearby walls. To hop off the wall instead of doing a triangle jump, press B.
  • Rocket Accelerator (hold B until team moves together) – This is basically equivalent to the spin dash used in most Sonic games, but it charges faster. The speed character spins into a ball while the rest of the team rolls him forward. Release the button and the speed character will separate from the rest of the team while dashing.
  • Special Attack (press B while away from the team) – Varies by character. Speed characters can use this move to attack enemies or break wooden crates.
  • Tornado (press B while jumping) – Blow ground enemies into the sky or stun flying enemies. Some enemies take damage from this move. If a ground enemy has a shield or helmet, a tornado removes it. Speed characters can use a tornado to break wooden crates. This move is slightly different on each team.
  • Tornado Shield – A yellow shield of wind forms around the speed character, and hitting an enemy or a pole with it has the same effect as hitting an enemy or a pole with a tornado (except it doesn’t stun flying enemies). You get this shield when using Rocket Accel, flying off a pole with Tornado Jump, or doing a level 3 Homing Attack.
  • Tornado Jump – Use a tornado on a vertical pole to spin to the top (or bottom).

Level 0: Homing Spin usually does 1 point of damage.
Level 1: Homing Spin usually does 2 points of damage. Running speed and Homing Spin range increase.
Level 2: Homing Spin usually does 3 points of damage. Running speed and Homing Spin range increase.
Level 3: Homing Spin usually does 3 points of damage and makes a Tornado Shield. Running speed and Homing Spin range increase.

There are other level up features (still working on them).

  • Fly Formation

  • Flight (hold A while in midair)
  • Quick Ascent (press A while in midair)
  • Thunder Shoot (press B) – Kick a spinning teammate at targets. This is a long range, electric attack and stuns most enemies. The teammate homes in on enemies and can also bounce off objects to hit multiple targets. Flying enemies fall and take damage when stunned. You can also use Thunder Shoot to hit floating target switches and break wooden crates.
  • Special Attack (press B without team) – Varies by character.
Flight characters can use this move to attack enemies or break wooden crates.
Level 0: Thunder Shoot usually does no damage except when a flying enemy falls. However, there are exceptions and certain enemies can be damaged by Thunder Shoot even at level 0.
Level 1: Thunder Shoot bounces more effectively so you can hit more targets and its range increases.
Level 2: Thunder Shoot usually does 3 points of damage, bounces more effectively so you can hit more targets, and its range increases.
Level 3: Thunder Shoot usually does 3 points of damage, bounces more effectively so you can hit more targets, and its range increases. You can often hit 4 enemies at a time.
  • Power Formation (Basics)

There are 2 very different styles of power formation. The similarities are listed here.

  • Bash – Any power attack (other than just jumping and hitting an enemy with a spin attack) can break wooden crates, steel boxes, cages, some enemy shields, and various walls, objects, and obstructions that may block your path. Power attacks can also light torches, move sliding walls, open doors, and move flapping targets that launch the team through the air.
  • Auto Homing – In normal mode, teammates automatically do Homing Attacks when near an enemy. If the speed character is at level 3, the Homing Attack removes shields.
  • Glide (hold A while jumping) – An aerial move that allows the team to glide or to ride air currents. Gliding into an enemy is equivalent to jumping on it with a Spin Attack.
  • Short Attack (press B) – A short range basic attack.
  • Remote Attack (press B after a Forward Attack) – A secondary attack. Varies by character. You’re almost invincible while doing this move.
  • Wide Power Attack (press B after a Remote Attack) – (Not available at level 0) An attack that covers a wide area.
  • Fighting Pose – When you do a Forward Attack, the power character carries the other teammates. They go back into normal power formation when you land from a jump or do a wide power attack.
  • Special Attack (press B while jumping in normal mode) – Varies by character. See the 2 different styles of power formation.
  • Jumping Fire Throw (press B while jumping and carrying teammates) – Each power character can toss spinning teammates as fireballs. The teammates home in on nearby enemies and make wide blast areas if they hit the ground.

Leveling up makes Fire Throws more powerful and better at homing and dramatically upgrades Wide Power Attacks. Fire Throw does 3-6 damage at level 0 and 6-12 damage at level 3. I haven’t quite figured out the exact numbers, but they seem to fluctuate. Wide Power Attack upgrades are very different for each character, so see the character descriptions for more details.

    Genre: 3D Platformer

    Intro

Sonic Adventure is Sonic’s MAJOR leap into 3D as a launch title onto the Sega Dreamcast.

    Story

Dr. Eggman is after the 7 chaos emeralds to unleash the power of Chaos, who Dr. Eggman believes will help him attain his goal of world domination. Sonic and Tails aim to collect the emeralds first to keep them out of Eggman’s hands. Meanwhile, Knuckles is on the hunt for pieces of the Master Emerald, which was shattered when Chaos was released, so that he can restore it and Angel Island. Unwittingly involved is Big The Cat when his best friend Froggy eats Chaos’ tail as well as swallows Big’s chaos emerald. A bird escaping from the Egg Carrier collides with Amy, who decides to protect it at all costs despite being continually chased by Zero. The wild card of E-102 Gamma as the robot who helps Amy and eventually turns against Eggman rounds out the 6 players. Throughout their adventures, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Big, and Gamma are shown various images of the past concerning chief Pachacamac of the Knuckles Clan, his daughter Tikal, the chao, Chaos, the Master Emerald, and the 7 chaos emeralds. Those images are key to understanding Chaos, the danger Chaos truly represents, and ultimately the way to defeat Chaos.

    Different Versions

There are three different versions of Sonic Adventure for the Dreamcast. There is the original game that was released in Japan called “Sonic Adventure.” There is also “Sonic Adventure Limited Edition” that was released in select places in the US prior to the launch of the Dreamcast. It was the original version of Sonic Adventure with the Internet features removed. The third version of Sonic Adventure is supposed to contain less glitches than the original Japanese version and was released worldwide as “Sonic Adventure International,” except in the US where it was called “Sonic Adventure.”

    Chao

This game is the first Sonic game that had the ability to raise virtual pets called chao. Chao get special abilities, looks, and increased stats when given animals or special fruit. The chao are raised in special gardens (or the VMU) and can also participate in races. More information can be seen here.

    Spin Dash

Sonic’s very first special move. Press Down to crouch, then hit A to rev up the spin. Keep tapping A to increase power. Let go of Down to release.

    Insta-Shield

A move learned in Sonic 3, Sonic’s Insta-Shield increases the area of Sonic’s Spin Attack. Tap A while jumping to perform the move. Note that, unlike in Sonic 3, Sonic can’t dodge projectiles with this move.

    Jump Dash

A new move to Sonic’s arsenal, the Jump Dash propels Sonic forward while in mid-jump. Tap either Left or Right 2 times to launch Sonic in that direction. You may find it useful if you need to reach a far-off ledge and you lack the space for a running start.

    Sonic Somersault

Carried over from SA2, the Somersault is used mainly to blow past badniks who may get in your path. Tap B once to start the Somersault. Tap B again to continue into a forward flip. At this point you can tap B to finish with a slide attack, or tap A to jump out of the move, effectively canceling it. This is useful if you find that the slide will end up taking you over a cliff’s edge.

    SegaSonic The HedgehogJun, 1993 Arcade

    EU Release: 0000-00-00

    JP Release: 1993-06-01

    Characters: Sonic, Mighty, Ray

    Genre: Isometric Platform

    Intro

Consisting of what looked to be traditional Sonic gameplay, you play as Sonic The Hedgehog, or two of the newer characters Ray The Squirrel, or Mighty The Armadillo – Who would soon go on to be come one of the founding members of The Chaotix in Knuckles Chaotix! Sadly this game NEVER came out in the US, released only in Japanese Arcades. The game in controlled by using a trackball.

    Story

Actual zones in the game include Desert Dodge Zone and Volcanic Vault Zone. Another popular level name to associate with Sonic Arcade is Metropolis Trance Zone, but that has never been confirmed. The songs “Sonic and Tails,” “King of the Ring,” “Sonic Electronic,” and “They Call Me Sonic.” They are from a totally unrelated original CD published by a company called “Arcade”–hence all the previous confusion.

    Other

    More

From what a Japanese Sega fan informed us, the track ball game was designed in an isometric view with true 3-D graphics composed up of flat shaded (yet, surprisingly good looking) polygons – very similar to Sonic 3D Blast’s isometic view, only much more detailed, and Streets of Rage-style and Final Fight type brawling. But it only had ONE AMERICAN SHOWING EVER !!!! It won critical acclaim at one of the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas, but it never was released nationally in arcades. That’s just too bad because from the looks of it, the Saturn could probably handle such a game due to its simple yet attractive look. With it having an EXTREMELY limited release this makes it the RAREST Sonic game ever.

In the meantime, thanks to sonic fan Micheal Stearns, owner of Sonic The Conspiracy we now have new information on the game that NOBODY seemed to know about! While details aree still foggy we will do our best to keep you informed. For some mysterious reason, nobody from Japan has given us American Sonic fans any words on the game. The game has turned up in London, but even there still in its Japanese form. If anybody else wants to share any details, please let us at Sonic HQ as well as Micheal know.

There was, at one time, a rumored Sega 32X version of the game planned. However, this never came to fruition, whether because of the system’s untimely demise or simply because no such plans ever existed in the first place.

    Gameplay

Sonic Shuffle plays like a virtual boardgame, using cards instead of die. At the start of the game, each player is dealt 7 cards with numbers that range from 1-6. You can choose which card to play, and once you have, a roulette that spins from 1 to the umber you just chose will spin. You must stop the roulette on the number you want. Once this is done, you move that many spaces on the board. There are also two other special cards, the ‘Eggman card’ and the ‘Special card’. When you play the ‘Special’ card, a menu appears that lets you do one of three things. You have the choice of swapping a card with a different player, stealing up to 7 of your opponent’s cards (chosen randomly) or start a ‘roulette’, where the card changes from 1 to ‘S’ (7). The number you chose to land on will be the number of spaces you move. When you play an ‘E’ card, Eggman appears and you or any other player will fall pray to all kinds of traps and penalties, shown by Eggman’s roulette with ’16 grades of evil’ on it.

Why on Earth would you choose this card? Well, it’s not as simple as that. While you can only see the cards in your hand, you are also allowed to use one of any other player’s cards, though you can’t see what they are. You might end up with the card you want, or exactly what you didn’t.

On your turn you may also use any ‘Forcejewels’ you have collected. Forcejewels grand various powers to the player, for example being allowed to use two cards per turn, instead of one. They can be collected in ‘Jewel shop’ spaces, won in mini-games or battles, or stolen from other players.

Once you have played your card, your character will move the given amount of spaces. Like in many boardgames, there are multiple spaces that have special features, for example receiving more rings (used to buy items), losing rings, a ‘Jewel shop’ for buying Forcejewels, a mini-game space, or a battle space.

Battle spaces launch you into a one on one battle with some kind of weird creature, possessing a card with a specific number on it. This number represents the monster’s HP (hit points). Battles are won by you drawing a card that has to be equal to or more than the monster’s. By doing so, you defeat the monster with your character’s attacks (see the Character Menu). If you have less than it’s number, you lose the battle and your rings The number of the card you lost with is however used to reduce the monster’s HP. If you have no rings and lose, you have to miss a turn. Using a special card results in a roulette, ranging from 1 to 6, but ‘S’ also appears. If you manage to get an ‘S’, you get to use your character’s special attack move. This varies character to character. It generally allows you to do more damage than would normally be done. This is necessary to defeat later monsters with HP higher than 6.

The main purpose of the game is to collect the most Presioustone shards. These land one at a time on specific places. To win one of these, you must defeat a monster in a battle in the same way the previously mentioned. However, these monsters are tougher, and may take a special move or several tries to defeat. The number of Presioustones that appear depends, but the default is 7.

Mini-tasks may also appear, and are board-specific. These are started by first landing on a Quest space. The quest will be given, and you will have a certain number of turns to get somewhere else. Succeeding in this will mean you get an extra emblem at the end of the game.

Now- the best part of Sonic Shuffle, the mini games. These are triggered in three ways, by either landing on a specific space or by ‘accident’ (a randomly appearing one). A ‘board clear’ mini game is also activated at the end of the game. The mini games differ turn to turn, and include a game where three players must fight the other who is suddenly made giant. These are definately the best aspects of the game. Victory is rewarded with rings.

At the end of the game, when all Presioustones are collected, the winner is decided. Emblems are awarded to players for various things such one for each Presioustone, having the most rings, completing the mid-game challenges etc. The player with the most emblems wins.

At the end of the game, (from 1p mode) the player’s rings are but into the ‘Sonic Bank’. This is for buying ‘photos’ in the ‘Sonic room’. Buying photos activates options like extra characters and a ‘toy box’ (where previously played mini games can be played).

Press the A-button to jump. If you press the A-button in the middle of a jump, the character perform an “air action” that varies from character to character. If you press the B-button in the middle of a jump, the character will attack (air attack).

Defend, HP Recovery, & Ichikoro Gauge

Press the L-button to create a quick shield to protect your character from attacks for a moment. Hold the L-button to recover lost HP and fill the Ichikoro Gauge (allows for one-hit KOs). You can be attacked while attempting to recover lost HP or filling the Ichikoro Gauge.

    Special Attacks

There are three types of special attacks: Power, Shot, and Trap/Set. You will use those types to set the Ground, Air, and Defend Special Attacks at the beginning of each fight as well as after being KOed in the middle of a fight (if you are KOed). Press the R-button to peform the Ground Special Attack. Press the A-button to jump and then the R-button in the middle of the jump to perform the Air Special Attack. The Defend Special Attack means that you are invulnerable to that particular type of Special Attack. These attacks can cause one-hit KOs if the Ichikoro Gauge is filled for your character and the character that you are attacking is not defending that particular kind of Special Attack.

    Characters

    Emerl

The Gizoid was found by Sonic, who “linked” to it and named it “Emerl” due to its connection to the chaos emeralds. In theory, Emerl is the most powerful character in the game. Based on how much you replay the game and/or fight characters, Emerl will learn the moves of all the other characters in the game. Once a move has been learned, you can set Emerl to use that particular move. So, Emerl’s usefulness is going to be a result of which moves Emerl manages to learn. There are also special ultimate and combo moves that can be unlocked or acquired in certain parts of the game that also help make Emerl tough to handle.

    Sonic

Sonic is one of the fastest characters in the game, and has average attacks and defense. His healing and ichikoro gauge charging abilities are on the weak side, but his quickness makes him easy to use in a fight.

    Tails

Tails has decent healing & ichikoro gauge charging abilities, average speed, can fly, above average defense, and has gadgets that help him out in a fight.

    Knuckles

Only E-102 and Chaos are slower than Knuckles in this game. His attacks, defense, and healing abilities are decent, but his ichikoro gauge charging ability is one of the best. Timing is very important if using Knuckles and his special attacks will help immensely if you have trouble using him.

    Shadow

Shadow is the fastest character in the game and many of his attacks are powerful and his defense is decent. He has some of the worst healing and ichikoro gauge charging abilities. He is easy to use in a fight due to his quickness.

    Rouge

Rouge has average speed and attacks. She has the ability to hover in the air, which might prove useful for attacking from above. Her defense, healing, and ichikoro charging abilities are not very good.

    Amy

Emerl’s “Mom” and the new promoter of boxercising, Amy, is pretty quick and has decent attacks. Her healing is pretty good, too.

    Cream

Cream is average in speed and mainly weak in attacks. Her healing and her ichikoro charging are some of the best in the game causing her special attacks to become your best friend when using her.

    E-102 Gamma

One of the slowest characters in the game, you can only play as E-102 outside of Story Mode after fighting against E-102 in Sonic’s episode. Its attacks are usually powerful and its healing is one of the best. Whenever it is KOed, it explodes, which will cause a lot of damage to any opponent(s) within range–unless it is the KO that ends the battle in which case no one is harmed. The damage can be minimized by immediately pressing the control pad in the opposite direction that the character is blown toward (if the opponent isn’t KOed by the explosion).

    Chaos

The slowest character in the game is Chaos. You can only play as Chaos outside of Story Mode after fighting against Chaos in Emerl’s episode. Its attacks range from weak to powerful though is healing is one of the better ones. Its attacks do tend to have wide ranges and some have “hidden” effects that are beneficial.

    Eggman

Eggman is not a playable character in this game. He is just attempting to take over the world for the zillionth time and is responsible for finding the Gizoid (named “Emerl” by Sonic).

    E-121 Phi

These robots were created by Eggman as a replacement for Emerl since Eggman couldn’t get Emerl to work as intended at first. These robots look exactly like Emerl, but are gray-colored, and will have all the abilities of either Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, Rouge, Amy, Cream, or E-102 when you face them. They are powered by chaos emerald shards.

    Guard Robo

These robots look exactly like E-102 and have all the same moves as E-102, but are gray-colored. Unlike E-102, these robots will not say anything to signify that they have been KOed and are about to explode. So, you must pay attention to their movement. These robots were created by Eggman, who has also sold them to people that use them as guards.

    References

    • The Death Egg from Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles returns as Eggman’s main battleship.
    • The Green Hill Zone from Sonic 1 is an “extra” battle area in Battle and Training Modes.
    • E-102 Gamma in this game is most definitely not the same E-102 Gamma from Sonic Adventure. It is powered by chaos emeralds/shards, not an animal as in Sonic Adventure.
    • Omega is mentioned by Rouge, which suggests that Sonic Battle occurs after Sonic Heroes.

    Capture Cards

As you play the game, in any battle that has Emerl as a participant, there will be an ability that the other characters (Sonic, Tails, etc.) have that Emerl will learn. You can set Emerl to use any move that he has learned in the Edit Screen–press the R-button while on the field or whenever the story allows/requires to access it. You do need to watch the skill points you have as well as the amount of skill points a move requires. You can only set Emerl to use a skill if you have enough skill points. You earn 10 skill points for each chaos emerald Emerl receives. You earn anywhere from 1-6 skill points for each fight that you win in which Emerl is a participant. Each card has a star rating (1-6). For each star, the card requires 5 skill points for it. So each card will require anywhere from 5-30 skill points to be used. Only the default skills have a zero star rating and therefore do not require any stars, but the default settings are extremely pathetic.

    Virtual Training

In Emerl’s episode, at Tails’ Lab, you can take part in Virtual Training. If you choose to enter, you must defeat three random opponents (virtual copies of Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, Rouge, Amy, Cream, E-102, Chaos, & Emerl) without ever being KOed once. In the first round, you must KO each opponent once; in the second round, you must KO each opponent twice; in the third round, you must KO each opponent three times; etc. You have to get through at least five rounds to earn a capture card.

    Professor Gerald’s Journal Entries

    Info

These journal entries will be unlocked after you beat the episode that displays the particular journal entry after you have beaten the entire game once. You can only view the entries after beating the particular episode that corresponds to it. In other words, no option will ever appear allowing you to read the entries anytime you want.

    Journal (Sonic)

…I have uncovered a most interesting specimen from the warehouse. I believe it is some sort of puppet or robot made by an ancient people. At first, I didn’t think anything of it, but when I was experimenting on “Chaos Emeralds,” it began to move. This suggests the possibility that even the ancient civilizations could harness the power of the “Chaos Emeralds.” When I was researching various papers related to the “Chaos Emeralds” and this robot, I discovered that there was a possibility that this robot was something incredible. I don’t want to get ahead of myself, but this robot may be the cause of the destruction of the Fourth Great Civilization. I’m not sure I believe it just yet, though.

    Journal #2 (Tails)

…I am no longer able to ignore the possibility that this robot did in fact destroy the Fourth Great Civilization. I have discovered a stone tablet that explains as much. According to the tablet, “When the figure falls from the heavens, and the Stone of the Gods is joined, all that exists will become one again.” Though it is difficult to believe, this robot has been watching my movements, and mimicking all that I do. I was amazed by my scans of this being. Surprisingly, reams and reams of data scrolled and caused my most powerful computer to crash. More intriguing was that the data was all about melee combat and weapons of that age. Eventually, if this being is ever restored to its former state, it will put all that data to use, and recreate all the weaponry and combat abilities that it once had… And that’s not all. If my guesses are correct, it will also have the ability to absorb modern weaponry as well. What have I done? I have uncovered a horrible weapon…

    Journal #3 (Rouge)

I now understand why this being was named “Gizoid.” In the ancient tongue, it means “everything.” According to the stone tablet, if the Gizoid establishes a “Link” with someone, the Gizoid will swear loyalty to that person. Perhaps it still lacks “Chaos Emerald” energy, but it has been saying the word “Link” to me in broken tones. It went on to explain: “Show me your true strength, and I shall obey. I am all things, and all shall belong to me.” So, as it suggested, I brought before it my collection of model guns, and fired them all. Then, suddenly, it said, “I shall follow your every command, and never leave your side.” And since then, it refuses to listen to anyone but me. While it still is a fearsome weapon of destruction, while it remains under my control, at least it won’t be used for evil. However, if someone with evil intentions ever forms a “Link” with the Gizoid… I don’t even want to think about what will happen. I must research how one can re-establish a “Link” with the Gizoid…

    Journal #4 (Knuckles)

The upper echelon is going crazy. Perhaps, they aim to freeze Project “Shadow.” Soon, the ultimate life form, “Shadow” will be completed… The application to my granddaughter is also imminent. I cannot just let them stop my study at this point. Because I am the only one who can save my granddaughter’s life.

    Journal #5 (Amy)

…The higher ups are threatening to shut down this research facility. I had no choice but to hand them the Gizoid to buy more time for my research. I tried to be careful and commanded it to never absorb any dangerous technologies. However, I have heard that other researchers have been making the Gizoid absorb weapons. Apparently, the way to cause the Gizoid to form a new “Link” is to show it power that surpasses that of its former master. While this poses immense danger, I cannot risk losing Maria.

    Journal #6 (Cream)

…My worst fears have come true. The Gizoid has absorbed enough weaponry and technology that it has started to go out of control. The resulting rampage resulted in the destruction of most of the “Ark.” …I have deciphered the rest of the stone tablet. It says, “When the Gizoid had learned all that it could, it became a god of wrath, and all was destroyed.” The researchers somehow managed to subdue the Gizoid and sealed it away. Luckily, it only had one “Chaos Emerald” installed. If it were to have all 7 Emeralds installed, it might destroy the whole planet. The Gizoid is too much of a liability. I tried destroying its core, but nothing I did worked. I understand too little of the technology that built him. My best hope is to try and reprogram its AI into a free-willed, emotions-based AI…

    Journal #7 (Shadow)

…I have heard there was an accident at the research facility. … … … Everything… Everything is gone. My own Maria’s name was among the list of casualities. My beloved granddaughter… They tell me her parting words were, “Bring hope to humanity.” I have decided that the keyword to activate the Gizoid’s free-willed emotions-based AI program will be those very words. “Bring hope to humanity.” My poor, poor Maria…

    Journal #8 (Emerl)

…A heritage of the past I dug out, “Gizoid”… And the ultimate life form I created by my own hands, Shadow… I equipped both weapons with “heart.” If all powers are not what is to be obtained for oneself, but what is to be born from hearts that yearn for someone, I believe all conflicts should cease to exist. Please… If there is anyone listening to my prayers… Bring hope to humanity.

Interestingly enough the game allowed for cooperative gameplay. A second player controller can be used to play as a supporting character, which is why the playable character list is so big. Don’t expect anything too revolutionary here though. It’s not splitscreen and is Shadow focused or basically more Sonic 2 or Sonic 3 & Knuckles coop 2 player like.

    Sonic SpinballNov, 1993 SegaGenesis, iOS

    Developer: Sega Technical Institute

    EU Release: 1993-11-15

    JP Release: 1993-12-10

    Characters: Sonic

    Genre: Pinball

    Intro

Looking for a challenge? Sonic Spinball is by far the HARDEST Sonic game on ANY system! Created in November of 1993, Sonic Spinball is an adventure/pinball game in which Sonic tries to free his friends from Robotnik’s Veg-O-Fortress. This game is also a VERY significant landmark. People often say that the Archie Comics hold NO place in the Sega world. Well the further you go in this game the further characters you see from the original SatAM cartoon ( Note that this game was created by Sega Technical Institute and NOT Sega Of Japan) – including Princess Sally, Rotor The Walrus, Bunnie Rabbot, Robotnik’s cluck bots, An actual roboticiser in action, as well as introducing Hip and Hop The Kangaroos and a cameo of Scratch from the “Adventures Of Sonic The Hedgehog” cartoon. There are only 4 levels to the game but they are LONG and get EXTREMELY frustrating the further on you go! Consisting of The Toxic Caves, The Lava Powerhouse, The Machine, and one of the hardest Sonic Zones ever created on any Sonic game period – The Showdown!!! Good luck, you’re gonna need it.

    Story

Robotnik’s latest scheme is to turn all the innocent citizens of Mobius into evil robots…at lightning speed. Using a high-tech, super-efficient robot factory hidden in the active volcano, Mount Mobius; utilizing the energy produced by the magma that flows through the volcano’s tunnels. The Veg-O Fortress, as it’s known, is guarded by a dangerously new “Pinball Defense System”. Only one too-cool hedgehog has the wits and the moves to break the defense and get at the heart of this metallic prison…Sonic the Hedgehog!!!

    Gameplay

If you’ve played Sonic 2’s Casino Night Zone, then you know what this is like. As hard as this game is, it can be beaten WITHOUT a game genie. However unless you don’t want to see the outside world for quite a while I suggest you get very ready to handle this game! The object is to get the Chaos Emeralds that Robotnik is using to power up is fortress. There are 3 in the first two stages and 5 in the rest.

    EU Release: 1996-11-30

    JP Release: 1999-10-14

    Characters: Sonic

    Genre: Platformer

    Intro

Except for Sonic Classics, this seems to be the final Sonic game for Genesis. Of course, that is not the case for Saturn. But at least Genesis is going out with a bang! Sonic 3D Blast is an amazing 3/4 overhead view game that had excellent play – but unfortunately it was MUCH easier than other Sonic games…The gameplay is a bit different this time around though. The Genesis and the Saturn versions are pretty much the same except that the Genesis graphics are less defined and the gravitational forces on Genesis are easier to deal with. The 32-bit version touted improved graphics, CD-quality music (from Sega of Europe’s own musical genious, Richard Jaques), true 3D Special Stages, and environmental effects (rain, fog, snow) in certain Zones. The gameplay, however, was identical. Solid, but not spectacular, and certainly below hedgehog standards. In this game, Robotnik is kidnapping the Flickies and using them to find the Chaos Emeralds that are hidden in another dimension. You must rescue 5 Flickies before you can go on to the next part of any act.

    Story

Sonic and his pals are off to visit the mysterious Flicky Island, home to many precious gems; as well as the even more mysterious Flicky birds. Dr. Robotnik, meanwhile, has discovered the location of the Chaos Emeralds on Flicky Island. He quickly set up a base and intruder defenses there, but first he needed Flickies to turn into robots. While he is pondering how to capture the elusive birds, he sees a bright flash in the distance. A Dimension Ring has appeared, and out of it fly a flock of Flickies. They perch on a tree, pick up some food, then fly back into the Dimension Ring. Then Robotnik realized the secret of the Flickies…they live in another dimension! With that, he set about creating the Dimension Ring Generator, which could capture Flickies in their home realm. Sonic arrived to discover Flicky Island in pandemonium, and it’s up to him to get the Chaos Emeralds before Robotnik and save the Flickies.

    Trouble With Metal Sonic ???

An easier way to beat Mecha Sonic after collecting the 5 tokens is to first capture The Tails Doll who is easier to get than the Metal Sonic and then use Mecha Tails against Mecha Sonic, cutting across the water to get a lead. Always make sure you run through the ruins or the open 20 ring door.

    Tricks and secrets

    The Ring Station

After the accelerator in Reactive Factory continue to go straight forward. When you come to split in the road take the left road. If you continue up this road you will end up passing by a sign on the side of the road that says RING. Stop at that sign, and if you wait rings will come to you, giving you up to 999 rings.

    Characters

    Sonic The Hedgehog

Sonic is the fastest of all the racers. He’s so fast that he almost lifts off the ground when he runs. Because of this, his cornering is often not as good as other racers, be wary of high, sharp curves. Sonic also has excellent jumping ability too! Due to the fact that he goes SO FAST he can literally “jump on air” allowing him to often pass others that barr him going any further, or crossing obstacles that would normally give him a hard time. Sonic can also perform spin jumps as well! If you hold down and continually press A, C, or Y, Sonic will rev up a spin-dash – let go and off you go like a hyperkinetic cork! You can spin-dash right from the start of the race to get a head start on the opposition. Simply start the spin-dash before it says “Go”, and release Down right when it says it to get ahead.

    Tails the Fox

Tails is not as fast as Sonic, but he accelerates and corners well. Jump and grip are fairly good too, but best of all, he can fly! But one of his most surprising abilities is propelling himself underwater – a great way to get ahead of the rest of the racers! However, his speed will never allow him to beat Sonic or Knuckles in a straightaway…Like Sonic, Tails can jump in the air and spin-dash. He can also fly for a few seconds by jumping in the air, then pressing and holding A, C, or Y while up there. Tails can also spin-dash from the start of the race to get ahead.

    Amy Rose

Maybe Amy’s car doesn’t have a very high top-speed, but there are some pretty wonderful things it can do. For one, it acts as a fast hovercraft on water. And look out when she fires the turbo boost! It can DEFINETELY get you into first place, but it can also make you lose control if not used well! But it will NOT work on water…Amy’s hovercraft can automatically hover when you go on water. When a tire symbol appears in the top-right area of the screen, press A, C, or Y to fire your turbo boost and rocket ahead! Even though you can’t turn too well while using the turbo boost, you can press L and R to help turn a little bit. Like Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, Amy can jet forward in front of all the opposition at the start of the race. Simply hold A, C, or Y until the announcer says “Go” to boost ahead for a head start. Amy is best for exploring the course for secrets, not in a straight-out race. Use her to learn the tracks in a Time Trial race….

    Knuckles The Echidna

Knuckles is the overall well-balanced contestant in the race. His ability to stay on the road is outstanding, and cornering is quite good. Knuckles can also glide after jumps, BUT he can NOT keep up with Sonic…Knuckles can jump and spin-dash just like Sonic and Tails. To glide – jump in the air, then press and hold A, C, or Y. Knuckles can spin-dash as well at the start to gain a lead.

    Secret Racer : Doctor Robotnik

Unlocking The Secret Racer: The key to unlocking Doc R as a racer is in the “Radiant Emerald Zone”! Just get a first place victory here and the Eggman will be in the fifth position on the character select screen next time you visit it!
Robotnik has returned in his faithful Egg-O-Matic to even up the odds!!! The machine cruises over water and is good for cornering, but no contact with the ground means no grip! But you know the dubious doc ALWYAS has tricks up his sleeve…namely the homing missiles! Like Amy, Robotnik can hover with his Egg-O-Matic. He also has homing missles you can use by pressing A, C, or Y whenever a green target appears over a racer in front of you. You must have 10 rings to use a missle. He’s great fun in two-player matches when you feel like blasting people out of the water, but not good to use in races. Use him to learn the courses as well

    Secret Racer #2: Metal Sonic

Unlocking The Secret Racer: The key to unlocking Metal Sonic as a racer is in the “Resort Island Zone”! Try using Sonic to get a first place victory here!
Metal Sonic has one edge that Sonic doesnt – the ability to hover. And this can make him faster in some areas while he is not faster than Sonic himself! However – along with his good, MS has his faults as well. For one thing Doc R screwed up again in the design – its true that he hovers, but if you stop moving he falls into the water like a moron. It’s even more important to watch your speed on corners as his speed cant handle them well at all…

Secret Racer #3: The Tails Doll

Unlocking The Secret Racer: The key to unlocking Teddy Tails as a racer is in the “Radical City Zone”! Just get a first place victory here and the Tails Doll will be on the character select screen next time you visit it!
Possibly one of the creepiest of ANY Sonic characters, the Tails Doll does not rejoice at the end of laps, it does not make any kind of gestures during a race….Complete with the stuffing down his back it just sits and stares like a blank zombie…His flight mode is absolutely perfect just as long as you dont slam into an object, such as a wall. He also hovers over water while standing still and will not fall in at all. He’s a little bit slower than Tails and wobbly as well and cant take to flight immediately if jumping off of hills….

    Secret Racer #4: Metal Knuckles

Unlocking The Secret Racer: The key to unlocking Metal Knuckles as a racer is in the “Reactive Factory Zone”! Shortcuts are a MUST for a first place victory…
Metal Knuckles can be considered as a balanced racer with a few more faults than Knuckles….Along with good speeding, gliding, and hover capabilities, Metal Knux also posses Metal Sonics faults – not being able to corner well and falling into water like an idiot after hovering and not moving.

Secret Racer #5: The Egg Robo

Eggbots are Robotniks “Chief badniks” of sorts. The largest badnik of them all Egg Robos can also race – however they are quite fat and clunky… Eggbots are strange, horrible racers…They posess SOME hover ability and missles like Doc R but thats about it – They’re not even real good in competition mode. Point blank: They suck at racing…

    Secret Racer #6: Super Sonic

Unlocking The Secret Racer: The final of the secret racers – the key to unlocking Super Sonic as a racer lies in EVERY ZONE – Find the Chaos Emeralds in all of them…
He’s baaaaacccckkk…..The ULTIMATE SONIC is back and rarin’ for action! And he works just a little bit better than your regular everyday average Sonic The Hedgehog…Being that Super Sonic is super fast, it’s even more important to watch your speed on the corners. Take Super Sonic across water and through shortcuts for easy victories. Beware, the computer uses this trick all the time as well is you race against SS. For your help, here are the locations of all the Chaos Emeralds…

    Chaos Emeralds

    Emerald : Resort Island

(behind the door which opens with 50 rings)

    Emerald #2: Radical City

(behind a door which opens with 20 rings, bottom of the course after falling down the hole in the street short after the tunnel)

    Emerald #3: Radical City

(behind the door which opens with 50 rings)

    Emerald #4: Ruins course

    Tracks

    Resort Island Zone

Music: Can You Feel The Sunshine

It’s a wonderful day for a race on this tropical island paradise. A nice blue sky, lots of greenery, a pretty waterfall – it’s all here. Get too enchanted, though, and you might slip into the water or bump into a coconut tree. Take the time to hop around the smaller islands. Going for a little rock climbing is well worth the effort too.

    Tokens

Token ; On the 1st bit of track you usually pass under a rock formation. Look on the top of it.

Token #2; Behind the waterfall after the rock formation.

Token #3; In a 20 ring tunnel at the right of the entrance to the ruins bit.

Token #4; On a solitary island right of the hairpin turn.

Token #5; Just before the loop there is a split in the track. Take the left (longest) route here.

    Radical City Zone

    Music: Living In The City

This course is plenty wide. Gaps in the railing aren’t just accidental breaks! Waterways look like slow going at first, but they can save you some time if you know which turns to take. And speaking of turns, there are a couple of tight ones to add to your fun. Ever wondered what it is like to be a pinball?

    Tokens

Token ; After the 1st dip in the track (with the water) keep left and drop down the hole.

Token #2; Same as above, but do NOT drop down the hole, jump on to the track. Continue forward and smacsh the barrier.

Token #3; After getting the above coin, Get back on the main track, and you’ll see another route behind you. Back-track down this route.

Token #4; Continue forward from the last coin, and smash through a barrier seen at the right of the track. The coin is in the middle of the huge pinball table.

Token #5; Just before the speed up, there is a 20 ring passage to the right. As well as hiding a coin, this is an excellent shortcut.

    Regal Ruin Zone

    Music: Back In Time

This one’s a killer. These ancient Egyptian remains are an archaeologist’s dream (or a nightmare, depending on if you like mazes or not). The main path is pretty easy to follow, but there are many little roads and nooks which could be hiding treasure, so search well! Springs might help you out of tight spots in this course.

    Tokens

Token ; After the 1st turn right, there is a hump and a left turn. Go over the hump.

Token #2; Coming up to the built-up area there is a slope with two springs to the left. Jump on the second one you see.

Token #3; Just follow the track as the CPU racers do… It’s pretty highup.

Token #4; Finishing the lap (almost), stick to the left on higher ground. You should see it.

Token #5; At the right of the slope mentioned for the 2nd coin. Go up some stairs and follow the path around.

    Reactive Factory Zone

    Music: Work It Out

Here you are transported into the future! Enter the factory of tomorrow, a completely automated wonder. There is lots of room to run, but there are also many hidden surprises and traps. What appears to be a simple course is really the hardest of the four.

    Tokens

Token ; Continue forward from the start line, and it’s behind a grey submarine.

Token #2; Now turn right around and head for the right of the track. Jump a small pool and get the coin. Head to the tower, and behind it is an entry. Hit the spring to get out quickly

Token #3; Hit the track’s speed up when you see it, and when your burst of speed ends, take the right hand route and backtrack to find a coin in the track centre.

Token #4; … And follow the route around to find another coin! That’s why you should have back-tracked!

Token #5; Near the end of the track (If you stick to the track proper – the topmost routes) There is a 20 ring entry to the right of the track. It’s here.

    Radiant Emerald Zone

    Music: Diamond In The Sky

Welcome to the inside of a chaos emerald…There are two shortcuts in this course. Each one is behind a 50 ring door. If you’re having trouble getting the rings for it, let one of the computer opponents open the first one. Open the second one yourself afterwards.

    Intro

Perhaps Sonic’s most unusual genre-bending, Sonic the Fighters (also known as Sonic Championship) was designed by Sega’s premiere arcade R&D department — AM2 — as a somewhat simpler and more animated take on their tried & true 3D fighting formula. The object was to attract those who didn’t previously take much of an interest in fighters, namely young children and female players. Like most Sega fighters, the game implemented a simple three-button attack system. Punch, Kick, and Dash, with all other moves being combos of these three. Noticably, there is no “defend” button. Each character has shield Barriers…these Barriers can be broken with special moves (similar to the Fighting Vipers armor system). Once all Barriers are broken, that character can’t guard again until the next round.

Although it got a fairly wide release in Japan, Sonic Championship (as it was known over here) was very minimally received in US arcades. It almost didn’t make it over at all, because Sega of America was at the peak of their utter stupidity phase at the time, and they thought the game was “too violent” to be associated with Sonic. Might not as well have, as you’d be hard pressed to find a machine at even the most elite of arcades. A Saturn conversion was long planned, but never came to fruition. It looks pretty hopeless by this point, and a Dreamcast version is very unlikely to say the least unless its revealed in a second jam title. The most we can hope for is StF’s inclusion in some future collection (like Sonic Jam), although no such collection is planned as of now.

It’s possible to get remotely aquainted with StF’s fighting style through Fighters Megamix on the Sega Saturn. After completing the “Muscle” round, Bark the Polarbear and Bean the Dynamite become playable characters. From what I can assess, the gameplay is similar to Virtua Fighter, only on a much simpler level. Combos aren’t as complex or flashy, and hand-to-hand combat is easier in general. (It should also be noted that the characters can literally run up walls…) Of course, I’m not about to try and rate the entire game based off of Bark and Bean in Fighters Megamix, but I’ve brushed around the edges enough to speculate that most amateurs and newcomer fighting fans should enjoy it, but hardcore VF otaku probably won’t find anything to write home about.

    Story

No sooner has Robotnik’s Death Egg been knocked out of the sky than the doc begins construction of a superior model: the Death Egg II. Tails’ transformable reconnaissance robot locates the machine in outer space and relays images to Tails’ base. Our fox buddy throws together a spaceship to reach the Death Egg II, but there are a couple of problems: the ship requires power from the eight (yes, there are eight in this game) Chaos Emeralds to launch, and it only seats one. The Emeralds are scattered around the planet, in the possession of eight “guardians”. One each with Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles “Tails” Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, Amy Rose, Nack the Weasel, Espio the Chameleon, Bark the Polarbear, and Bean the Dynamite. Sonic and Tails meet Knuckles on Floating Island to determine the best course of action. Knuckles points out that, since there’s only room for one, only the strongest should go. Of course, he decides that he’s the logical choice, and demands that Sonic give him his Chaos Emerald. Sonic, not being particularly fond of Knuckles’ methods, prepares to start a fight. Just as the two are about to go the rounds, however, Tails interrupts the brawl with an idea: they hold a fighting tournament to determine the strongest one fair and square.
