When they meet Robotnik offers to leave them in peace if he can have control over just one zone, but Sonic tells him that he wants to protect every zone so he won’t accept the deal. This is when Robotnik reveals himself to be a hologram and has implanted a plasma ray cannon on the peak that will blast it apart so fast not even Sonic would have a chance to escape. But after the explosion it turns out Sonic is also a hologram projected from Tekno’s workshop and the two come to a slate mate ending the transmission.
