Synopsis[]

Lanolin and Whisper scout out the Eggperial City from a hill outside the city. They don't see many defenses, but Lanolin is skeptical of the situation. Sonic and Tangle then rush into the city to attack, to the surprise and anger of Lanolin. She complains about their reckless behavior, but Whisper says that's just how they are. As Sonic and Tangle fight Badniks, Sonic notices they are spread thinner than last time. Tangle says she doesn't want them too thin because she wants to fight. Just then, a Red Eye nearly crushes her. She gets behind Lanolin, who flicks her cowbell, causing her Magenta Wisp to attack the Red Eye. Whisper then destroys the Badnik with a laser shot from her Variable Wispon. Sonic compliments Whisper on the move, but Lanolin yells at Sonic for forgetting their mission.

Earlier at Restoration HQ, Sonic arrives at a meeting with Jewel, Lanolin, Tangle, and Whisper. Jewel explains Lanolin has a plan to expand the Restoration's efforts beyond humanitarian aid and rebuilding efforts. Lanolin says they are creating a rapid-response team to protect people and get ahead of any threats. She says Tangle, Whisper, and herself have volunteered for the team. Tangle says how happy she is to see Whisper again. Sonic asks Whisper if she is alright to fight again after her fight with Surge, and she says she is fine. Lanolin says they know about his battle at Eggperial City and Jewel asks Sonic to lend his experience and expertise for a scouting mission. Sonic agrees and asks if the group has a name. Tangle suggests Diamond Cutters and Lanolin says that sounds cool. Whisper looks angry about the name, which causes Tangle to look concerned. Lanolin tells Sonic she has looked forward to working with him for a long time. Sonic doesn't remember meeting her, and she reminds him he saved his town of Riverside. She says Sonic inspired her to join the Restoration and she later started to work directly with Jewel. Sonic is pleased to meet her and asks when they are going to leave for the mission, to which Lanolin says she is ready.

In the present, Sonic tells Lanolin "slow and sneaky" isn't his thing and Tangle says she is still getting used to team dynamics and apologizes. Lanolin asks how Whisper handles her; Whisper replies she doesn't. Concerned, Tangle asks if there is something they need to talk about, but Whisper tells her no, leaving the whole group feeling uneasy. Sonic steers the group back to the mission by asking if they should head into the city. Lanolin says she wants to assess their surroundings first and gives Whisper's Green Wisp a device to scout the area from above. Lanolin concludes the city has gotten bigger since the last time Sonic was there. Tangle is confused as to how since there is no construction equipment.

Lanolin considers another way to prove her theory, then Sonic says he has an idea. He uses the Green Wisp to use Green Hover. He reaches the point in the city where Metal Sonic messed up their initial escape plan from the city. Sonic returns to the group and says the point is repaired. He confirms to Lanolin the city is getting bigger and is somehow healing itself. Lanolin is shocked and asks how that's possible, but Sonic has no idea. Tangle begs the Green Wisp to let her try Green Hover too, but Whisper tells it to come back to rest. Lanolin says the city has to have resources to fuel its construction. Tangle suggests they are mining for resources because the trees around the city were in bad shape. Sonic remembers Belle saying there was a whole network of tunnels under the city. Lanolin tells the group to move to the tunnels cautiously.

They reach down to the tunnels on an elevator and stealthy take out some Badniks. Eventually, they reach what seems to be the lowest point of the tunnels. Whisper blows a hole at the bottom of the tunnel and Lanolin rappels down with Tangle into the hole. They discover a dark cavern that has been strip mined off all resources. They exit and tell what they saw to the others. Sonic sees Eggman's plan: he will keep expanding the city until the entire planet is converted. Lanolin says they have to get back to HQ to rally the troops to take down the city. Sonic then suggests for them to take down the city themselves since they are already in it and know where Eggman is. Lanolin is against the idea, saying its too dangerous and their team is untested. Sonic reminders her the city will grow as they marshal more troops. Lanolin replies saying it will grow unopposed if they get taken out today. Tangle is unsure what side to take, then Whisper suggests to have them fall out while she stays and scouts. This causes Tangle to snap at her, saying she had a close call recently and she needs to stop going solo.

Just then, a device arrives in front of them that generates a portal. Tangle remembers the portal from the Eggman Tower that took Sonic into a simulation. Sonic tells them they don't want to go through that portal and they run off. Tangle grabs Sonic's hand and grabs Lanolin and Whisper with her tail. A group of Badniks appear on the elevator to stop them and Sonic warns them that things are about to get bumpy. Sonic jumps and runs up the shaft with the rest of the group fighting off Badniks. Just as they reach the top, a Zoomer breaks Sonic and Tangle's grip, causing Tangle, Whisper, and Lanolin to fall into the portal. Sonic is able to get away, but a group of Badniks surround him. He then runs into a building and calls for Jewel on a wrist watch. Sonic says they are in trouble, he's surrounded, and needs some help.

  • This is the first time Lanolin is referred to by name despite making multiple appearances before this issue.
