So whats up with this show? I've seen alot of ppl with avatars that I would assume are part of it because of its similar animation compared to alot of jokes pictures and gifs about it.
I first heard of it from like.. Can't remember name atm but it was a forum and they made a drinking game out of the show and put strict rules only to drink every few times some character does or says something that doesn't make sense. I don't remember.

Basicly, I want to know why ppl seem to like it so much.

It's just a really well put together, entertaining show that seems to not cross any of the lines that made the previous generation attempts completely unbearable. The level of skepticism that prevents people from trying it out because of those same preconceptions are either nonexistent, or made actually enjoyable, as well as putting a lot of other things that actually makes it entertaining.

Overall, it's just a really fun show to watch. From it's animation, voice acting, characters, plots... it's all just great.

Mada, you must stop putting quarter horses onto catapults.

But yeah, what Chao said about the show. It's a kid's show that can be appreciated not only by adults, but by males of the human species as well. The humor alone is really sharp, being character-based as it is, while the world-building is remarkably consistent. It's not hard at all to find a favorite pony because there are plenty to choose from - even the most hardened Internet gamer probably has Pinkie Pie or Fluttershy on their desktop or in toy form on their desk! And the art style is really a huge update to the entire franchise.

Guess the only way to answer that really is to give it a chance yourself and make your own opinions on the program. *shrugs* It, like everything, won't be to everyones tastes. It's certainly not to mine.

I'm an adult and I like the show. So apparently does a lot of the Internet, judging by the incredible popularity and the term "bronies" that has been coined for male fans of the show. Not to mention ponies everywhere.

There are people who don't like the show. I know three of them. (Pach is one of them) So your mileage may vary, but as long as you're willing to give it a fair shot and not carry in prejudices from older versions of the franchise, then I think you may very well enjoy it yourself.

There are occasionally a couple of weak points in the stories (like for example, someone's reason for going to the gala is to make enough money to get their grandma's hip replaced; another is to have fun at the party. But both reasons are treated with the same level of importance!), but generally speaking, the show's just really fun and funny. It also makes the memes way better to understand if you've seen the series to know where they come from, and why.

Here is the answer you seek as to the origin of the phenom.

http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/blogs/latest/entry/dsott-3-my-little-pony-fim

TL;DR - If you hate cute, you will hate everything this show is.   If you like or don't mind cute, you will be hooked.

It's a simple matter of your definition of "normal".  I'm not going to delve into societal gender expectancies and such but what it boils down to is simply how secure you are with yourself and how much you care or depend on what people think about you to sustain your current situation.

It has no bearing on the actual content of the show.  Only what people that have never looked at it think of it.

Personally?

I'm in a position too pony without fear of anything more than weird looks and mocking.    It's up to you if the people you associate with will afford you to like what you like.

~Tobe

EDIT:

For example if you associate with putz's that hate ponies but think avatars of Buffy making masturbation motions are A-OK 100% cool G!    Then you should not watch or keep the fact you can judge a show on thespian and literary merits without getting mired in the "cute"... too yourself.

My answer, Xemesis, is to embrace this new feeling and look into it more...there IS nothing wrong with enjoying a show you like the look of.

People should stop letting others narrow minded views interfere with their own enjoyment of genuinely good things. :3

It's quite hard for me to say something that hasn't already been said. To me, it all boils down to the fact that the show doesn't treat its viewers like hollow-minded marketing targets and also the fact that there's something for everyone in the room who happens to be watching.

Action? There's quite a bit to be had. Humor? Tons of puns, snarks, and slapstick everywhere. General zaniness that would be a better fit in something like Rocco's Modern Life rather than My Little Pony? Extremely. Morals that are actually unique and legitimately good life lessons? Definitely (the one in the Trixie episode about being proud but not arrogant over your own abilities and talents comes to mind). Good and fluid animation. Very yes.

Cute? Yeah, you'll still need insulin after watching this, but it's not glurge to the point where you want to burn your eyes out.

Mind you, it still has some flaws, as executive meddling and the fact that it's still aimed at little girls who will pester their parents for the toys still pop up from time to time, but not enough to detract from the positives.

There's no shame in joining the legion of bronies, brother. Quality entertainment knows no gender and age boundaries. 😉

Well, I don't ever want to see this show. You know the reason why? Not because of my enviable manliness, or my image, or because a pony killed my father in a duel. It's because of you. Yes, YOU. ALL OF YOU, except for you. AND YOU. Not you. YOU TOO. It was (vaguely) amusing for a while, but then you all went and overdid it. Well stop it. STOP BEATING THE DEAD PONY.  YOU KILLED IT. IT'S DEAD. THERE'S NOT EVEN ENOUGH LEFT OF ITS DESECRATED CORPSE TO BE REANIMATED. I hope you all had fun.

Y'know, you really need to stop being stupid and do things on your OWN merit, and not judge it because of the fans involved.

THAT is the most ridiculous method of overreaction there could possibly be. It's also needless and just everso slightly childish.

Jin watches ponies.

If Jin watches ponies, every man in the world is safe when it comes to watching ponies. Toby was +@$!*%$ flabbergasted when he found out I watched. I'm currently in the process of trying to get my staff to watch it. No success so far. They're too scared of being called a bunch of girly girls with no peens. F'in pussies.

wow gif wizard that link under your sig is so awsome XD did you do that with pinkie pie?????
guess you being a fan now means i dont have to do that.

as for an added post in this thread,

i keep reading your worried about being a "guy" watching this show. i watch very scary shows like all the saw movies hostle ... i really fogot what else i just dont think there's a horror movie i havent watched even korean ones (which btw are a million times more scary than any hollywood movie). and i love tragic dark violent stories more than natural.. but i havent turned dark in nature : ) i love cute things and wont accept meaness in real.
my point is what you watch doesnt change you, or has anything to do with you. just remember the little boy inside of you wants to watch this let him have fun. you dont have to play the adult all the time.

I'm a big fan of the show, and I'm not in the slightest bit embarassed about it. It's well-written, it's well put together, it doesn't fall into a lot of the lazy plotting I've seen in similar shows, and it generally leaves me wishing that this was the MLP cartoon I had when I was growing up. If only every production team responsible for a tie-in series bothered to take this much care.

I watched the My Little Pony cartoons, the original ones, when I was little. I actually kind of liked the absolutely bizarre plots, from what I remember of them - but looking back at any episode now makes me cringe and gag from just how terrible it is, from the voice acting to the animation at times. It hasn't aged well, like a majority 80's and 90's cartoons.

But I think it was because I'd watched MLP before that it wasn't such a big deal for me to try out the new show. And I'm glad I did.

Mada, Lauren Faust specifically has said in some interviews that she doesn't want to tackle too many of those issues...it's not the point of the series, and Hasbro really don't want the show going in that direction anyway - so no love stories for you, sadly.

Brohoof Jin!  Just shove it on one of the monitors and once all the Brony's come through your store your staff will be assimilated.

Am I the only that finds it hilarious that stick hates a show because of the fans... yet is on a sonic the hedgehog messageboard?   Because Sonic fans are so much less irritating than a few pony meme's that'll go away in a few months.  *Pretend I linked to Sonmanic and bw1979's ED pages right here with something clever*

Well I'm done, the Brony's have already spoken up here so there's nothing left too...  wait, one more thing:

Okay, NOW I'm done.

*Hoofbumps Toby* Not a prob, brohoofs.

And yeah, I'd rather be associated with ponies than Sonic any more.

Honestly, as a human being, I'm glad this show went this route as opposed to sticking with the ridiculous shows from the 80s and 90s that practically belittle girls with an overabundance of cuteness, ridiculous "evil plot of the week" stories, and completely bland an unbearable characters.

Oh, and Sam, you have no worries of being embarrassed, except that you're now an adult, and thus you risk the, "omg you still watch cartoons" monicker. Men have it worse, what with the whole social expectancy and all that, PLUS the whole "adult" thing. So, methinks you're lucky in which you get half the ridicule nonsense. SO lucky.

You all should've seen when Toby, Stacy, myself, and one of my staff members went out to C2E2 and, in the hotel room, we transitioned from talking about Green Lantern to freakin' ponies. Oh my god the look on his face, to especially see his boss go from awesome nerd who likes awesome nerdy geeky gaming and comic stuff to... ... to... to ponies.

Oh man. The three of us tried to gang up on him and force him to watch an episode. No go. Some peen-shields are harder to break than others.

OH OH OH and Pach, not watching ponies makes you gay since it enforces your insecurity about your sexuality and thus now we all know that you constantly think of the mansex. Catch you at your pride parade, sweet heart. ;D

(OH MY GOD CALM DOWN IT WAS ALL SAID IN JEST, EVERYONE WHO IS GASPING RIGHT NOW CALM THE HELL DOWN).

I've run the gauntlet of my argument being labelled worthless because I have a cartoon fox as my avatar before - including on this board on one occasion. I tend to just go Cyrano de Bergerac on 'em:

"Is that the best you could do? You could have said that my stance was idealistic and didn't take full account of the sociopolitical situation. You could have said that, having a non-native viewpoint, I may lack empathy with the demographic I'm describing. You could have said that I was using loaded language to answer my own questions. But no. You think that my viewpoint is invalid because I have a cartoon fox as my avatar."

And so on and so forth.

From GL to ponies works for me. Just don't mention Blake *twitch* Lively.

I stand by my original post, though. Many merchandising tie-in cartoons from the '80s and '90s were nothing more than 20 minute commercials and utterly transparent about it, with low production values in general and basic, cookie cutter narratives designed to showcase whichever action figures the franchise were releasing that week. Without the licence, there was nothing behind them at all and they probably wouldn't have made it off the drawing board.

FIM strikes me as a series that's better crafted than that. You could probably take the MLP characters out of it, replace them with leprechauns or meerkats or whatever, and still have a worthwhile story that made sense.

I would hold out "Mighty Max" as an example of a 90s cartoon based on a toy line that was so much better than the merchandise. Of course, the awesome voice actors helped!

Not really. I've been called racist many, many times for admitting that I listen to Burzum or similar bands (Whose members are noted for their... "Controversial Opinions"), while I only care for the music itself and not any kind of "message" or anything like that. And these people are supposedly sane people with common sense and fare more mature than anyone else.

ib4butyouare

As for the show, I don't like but I don't hate it like I pretend to in the SPA. I could really care less either way, it's just anti-meming the SPA's current meme for the sake of lulz.

My Little Pony: SERIOUS BUSINESS

To be honest (and nearly unsarcastic), I'm only mildly annoyed (nauseous?) with the show being everywhere, although the meme's don't help. However, Mildly Annoyed Stickghost is not nearly as much fun to be as Pissed Off Stickghost. I didn't expect to ruffle some manes here. I'm not gonna say I'm sorry, because actually I'm rather amused. I enjoy making inflammatory comments, but I thought my post to be rather nonvolatile.

However, it's too late to back out now that I put my foot down. PEER PRESSURE WON'T WORK ON ME! Now I know your weakness.

DUE TO THE SARCASTIC NATURE OF THIS POSTER, READER DISCRETION IS ADVISED

Well, the (irritating) Sonic fans are at least limited to the Internet (at least, I've never seen one in real life) so they got that going for them. Anyway, I chalk this up to my relative newness here. I'm sure if Pachamac was the one who said what I did, none of y'all probably would have even blinked.
