Hey guys,

I'm pretty sure none of you know this, but I'm the lead singer/guitarist in a band called Second Act. It took ages, but now we're finally releasing material on our myspace page! You guys have always been pretty awesome, honest people, so I'd love to get some feedback on what you guys think of our music/look!
http://www.myspace.com/secondactmusic

We've already released two songs, and we'll be releasing a new one every Friday!

Hope you guys dig it!

Your music isn't half-bad. I'm interested in seeing how far you go with this.

Oh hey, you guys sound pretty good actually.

Instrumentals are a lot better than your vocals, though. Sometimes the vocals are more important than the instruments since voices work a little differently; and depending on the song, they give a better coherence of blending and making the music sounding like one entity. You know, making it all sound wonderful together. 😀

Bands do take a lot of work and years of practice but if you are willing to make the commitment, then go for it.

I know. ^^; Originally I was looking for someone to be our lead singer, but I got so tired of being blown off that I thought, if I went for lessons, I could probably sing for the band! So I've been getting vocal lessons ever since, and I'll only sound better as time passes, I hope! :'D

I really like the folk/indie/ambient sound you have going on, in all honesty. The vocals might not be pitch perfect, but it's hard to nitpick, since it almost compliments the genre. As Wayne Coyne (The Flaming Lips) said, "Perfect music is boring music. Sloppiness adds character (all in moderation, however.)"

Being a musician myself, I can also tell you, as time goes on, your voice will develop, so if you're not satisfied, just keep playing. It will all even out, given the time. Keep it up!

Aww, thanks Beardo! Do you have a myspace page/youtube channel? I'd like to hear some of your stuff!

Since it's Friday, we've released a new song! It's a recorded version of our song Winter Winds, you guys can check it out here: http://www.myspace.com/secondactmusic
For the next little while all the songs that come after this one will feature a drum machine, because our drumer quit the band. >  The past few days I've felt like I've gotten a divorce its been so messy.. But, we'll be fine! We'll find someone else! I'm sure of it..

I actually have a purevolume page. I just started it, so it's rather naked, but you're free to listen if you'd like.

Hey, your sound is pretty cool! Very fresh and clean, kinda gives off Owl City vibes. Bel Air Aint So Far Away made me lol.

We finally found a new drummer! Hopefully sometime in March or sooner we'll have some new material to put up! It's gonna be the new Second Act!

Not bad for what I expected, really. But that's cynicism from hearing so many myspace bands when I posted on gaiaonline for a time. Pleasant folk sections with decent rhythm backing it. Your vocals aren't offensive so that's all you really need to progress your band from here. I would suggest implementing a fuller sound (maybe another guitar or even keys?), I also really enjoy the harmonies when you implement them so perhaps work on those for more songwriting efforts? I'm a musician (although not a contemporary one) so I can definitely nod with Beard's saying of time will improve you.

It's just me and my bassist now, but we got a much fuller sound then we did before! What do you guys think? :3

what the hell this is 100% wrong vocals should never be the most important thing

Anyway, regarding the music itself, I'll be nice since this is the MoFo. If this were a different forum though, I'd imagine the reaction to be... more hostile. Or maybe I'm used to music forums where new bands generally get extremely hostile reactions. Whatever.

Indie/Folk/whatever isn't something I dig, although I'll give you props in that this isn't awful unlike most of the stuff that comes out of this genre. Just not really good either. Basically it's average, but at the least I'm not offended by it's existence which is a huge compliment for an indie band.

Granted, I don't hate *all* indie, there are a few bands here and there that I dig (depends on what you classify as indie though, I ****ing love shoegaze but I don't really lump it in with the whole indie scene), also take into account after you hear 1000000000000 awful bands basically copying one another it's pretty hard to not be cynical about another myspace band.

But if you really enjoy what you're doing I guess you should keep on doing it (until you get a really annoying fanbase that is!), but bear in mind I'm a self-described music elitist and I listen to metal so w/e, my opinion pretty much counts for nothing.

I meant depending on the song, as certain ones do focus on the vocals rather than the instruments. Melodies, and being catchy also play an important part on songs, and certain aspects of them are able to attract attention if it perks peoples' interest. Meanwhile, I didn't think that the two earlier songs that were posted that I listened to didn't have great vocals (which I now know the reason why since there was a good explanation for it) so I guess I was focusing most of my criticism on that in my post. Guess I should have worded that a bit differently.

i didnt see this till now, i also didnt want to read what the others said so i wont have my opinion changed so i'll give you my pointers:

things i liked:
1- clever idea with the elephant and story
2- music is catchy and intersting to listen to
3- there was some clever camera angle shooting espacially the end and when the elephant got hit by the car.

things you need to fix:
1- technology, your band was very clever hard working and it shows you had good ideas and talent but your equipment fails you. the camera is bad and the audio recording is terrible there was too much background sound even the mic for the main singer wasn a regular mic you need one that filters out the breathing, i couldnt clearly hear the words. and when choosing a camera make sure its one that doesnt chop the picture when moving fast. half of the digital cameras have that flaw.

2- you should record the singer's voice alone not with the back up music. the singer's voice has to be a little bit higher than the music so the words are understood, its all about the vocalist, so when you have them seperate you can edit the music's volume for both the vocals and the bgm.

3- even though there were clever camrea shooting, the cameraman's hand was shaky all the time, sometimes its okay to give effect when there were close ups of the elephant like when he was begging on the street it felt funny with the camera shaking about and he's moving his elephant head. but most scenes should be with a steady shot.

4- although the girl was okay in the basketball court, she should've changed her clothes in the house and fixed her hair. it wont harm if she weared a tank top with some accessories and maybe wore her hair in a ponytail or something. she's lovely its just girls are the candy of the music video seeing her in another outfit later on would have been interesting. also i think she was too shy, i know its hard to be infront of the camera i wont dream of it XD but i'm sure she's brave enough to keep trying to over come her stage fright.

5- i saw the hair of the person carrying the puppet elephant at 4:20... try to edit that.

6- i wont say the vocalist had a bad voice.. more of an unconfiednt voice. tell him to sing with more happiness and song in his words, also it would help if he practiced on copying a famous singer like "gillbert sollivan" one key to being as good as him is thinking how good his songs will still be even without backup music. changing how you pronounce a few letters adds more beauty to a song. like how nsync used to say"me" as "may" that was awsome singing.

anyway even if i say all that, you were amazing in everyway. you top the average person so dont let that go to waste...i wish you and your band more success cause that would be wonderful for us music lovers too.. i just love the beat in the music it sounded like something from silent hill to me but not so dark if only you can fix a few things you'll be on your way.

Yeah, so, my primary musical outlet is a metal band. Which I'm the vocalist, so thanks for that.

Clearly you have never scoured the internet enough to post on a music message board before

also I'm probably the biggest metal fan on this board (which is pretty obvious to the MoFo), so lol sarcasm
