Alright, let's face it, the Sonic fandom has more divinations than the christian religion (no offense meant to any christains reading this) You've got your fans of the games, the anime, the Sonic-X cartoon, the comics, the uk comics and finally the cartoons.

All love the character of Sonic the hedgehog, none can quite agree as to which interpritation is the more accurate

My question is this.

What is it about the Satam series that most outside fans find so unapealing? What elements would have to be dropped before they could enjoy the series? What would have to be added?

I guess the reason I'm asking this, is beacause I'm in the process of putting togeather a Satam-based fanfiction, but am trying to incorperate elements from all corners of the sonicverse, so that there's somthing for everyone.

So if you're not a fan of the Satam series, please state your reasons. But also give a few examples of things from the other series that could be incorperated to make my story enjoyable for you.

I'm looking for honesty folks, becuase when it comes down to it, I really want to write a story that all Sonic-fans can enjoy no matter what corner of the fandom they hail from.

I dislike it because:

1. It's formulatic, Robotnik has a scheme, they go to the city, they stop it, they go back. Occasional deviations with mystical stuffs. The only major story advancement in the entire series is Chuck becoming a spy.

2. I didn't care about any of the new characters. Especially Sally, as she seemed to be the protagonist of the show, saving Sonic all the time and being the leader. I'd like to watch Sonic The Hedgehog. Not Sally The Princess.

3. Mentioning the above formula, it's the exact same as Legend of Zelda. "Hero lives with Princess in a stronghold, enemy lives in another stronghold, they're at war, heroes sneak to the enemy base alot but never really do anything, hero has crush on princess but makes no advancement due to cartoon romance = "rejection = love", hero has annoying catchphrase. Not really anything to do with videogame canon.

4. I hate the whole ring-ex-machina. I'd like to see an actual fight scene once in a while which isn't just "wait until I'm given a ring... once I do have a ring everyone dies".

5. Seriously... Sonic is just a soldier in this one. An insuburdanant and pretty bad one at that. SO not my thing.

6. Robotnik being all dark and sinister WHILE being comic relief. The only incarnation of Eggman I've ever enjoyed in a cartoon is the Sonic X one where he isn't quite serious, but isn't exactly a joke either.

7. Tails had no place in that show. He was a damned toddler that people had to babysit in that cartoon. Screw right off, in the first game he appeared in, he was flying an aeroplane. There's no need for that characterisation unless someone just looked at a single bio page with age, appearance and species and did what they wanted.

8. Be honest. If you turn Sonic, Tails and Robotnik into different characters then you have an original series which I would have no obligation to justify my distaste for, but the show would still be the same.

I'd list more, but I need to get to work. But, yeah. It's not a I DESPISE THIS SHOW!!! it's more of a "yeah. I don't watch it because it doesn't appeal to me" kind of thing.

Be fair, Sonic X is the only show which has, and only a small number of episodes (mostly in episodes 25-78) make me smile.

I never saw this before... Well at least that bump served a purpose.

I'm actually neutral on SatAM but I guess I can provide some insight.

I'm beefs with SatAM mirror Craigs. Though half of those aren't complaints about SatAM more than they are just gripes that it's an american kid's show and made to that standard with all the cliche's and whatnot forced into it.

All the same the very reasons some people dislike it are the same reasons other people like it. The sally angle, having another main character with intelligence and irritating bossiness allows sonic to be a more real character and not have quite "mister perfect" niche he falls into in some of the other stuff.

Why the hell I'm analyzing shows made to appeal to my little cousins is beyond me. I MUST be bored.

Anyway I don't know if you CAN actually change the SatAM universe so it appeals to more fans. Because once to start editing major things like character roles, you lose the reason that some people ARE interesting in it. It'd be like removing nerdy pop humor from Clerks to try to gain other sections of the populus. Yeah, you may be able to do it, but you're probably going to lose your original fanbase in the process.

Actually, I'm pretty cool with most aspects of it, although there are a few things that need addressing:

1) Mobius. It's Earth, it should be called "Earth", end of discussion.

2) Tails should be more active than he was in SatAM - or at least, what I've gathered his activity was from reading various comments on the series.

3) Eggman is completely off-model, both design-wise and character-wise. Regardless of whether or not he's conquered a significant portion of the globe, in the end he should still be a somewhat goofy rotund man with an intense, long-standing rivalry with Sonic, and besting the blue pin-cushion, moreso than his desire to conquer the world, should be his main motivation in life. It just happens that his plans to best the hedgehog almost always involve world conquest somewhere along the lines. Yeah.

The extra characters I don't really have a problem with, despite what others would say (although with Tails being a mechanics freak, Rotor is, well, redundant).

The setting would be problematic if the planet was Earth, but perhaps limit it to one small island (just as the early games did). The Freedom Fighters could be a relatively recent development on the island as a response to an otherwise non-world-threatening conflict that arises when Eggman shows up and decides to experiment with a powerful new technology, roboticization, and, much as he torched parts of Westside Island with the Death Egg in Sonic 2's story, decides to experiment on the island. Sonic just happened to be passing by, and, hearing about the conflict, desires to help out a dire situation - and the fact that he, as well, acknowledges the strong rivalry with Eggman (his end being to simply stop Eggman whenever possible) helps, too - and joins up, quickly becoming one of their premiere members. Tails, well, no matter the point in canon, so long as it happened after Sonic 2 he just tags along with Sonic for one reason or another. The Chaos Emeralds get thrown in the mix somewhere here, since they always were.

...actually, I seem to have rather taken to that spin on the SatAM tale - it actually would somewhat fit into the Japanese canon rather well! Particularly the early ones where Eggman's schemes weren't extravagantly large in scale, limited to small islands or locations strewn all over the globe (South Island, Westside Island, Never Lake/Little Planet, Angel Island, et cetera) and Sonic was more of a noble nomad than the excessively cheesy ditz he is today.

I wouldn't say I hated SatAM at the time. I didn't really watch it because it was too far away from the games in terms of art style (especially when compared to AoStH, which I liked) and the added characters didn't appeal to me. (Why wasn't the STC characters in it ;_; was how I felt at the time)

I don't mind the setting so much. Robotnik rules the world. Sonic has to beat him etc. The most enjoyable stories I find are when the good guys are chasing the bad guys.

On Robotnik however. He was just too evil. His voice was kinda cool but his appearance was just ugh.

Also, how come they used a dragon for a stealth mission? A DRAGON...

Theme song was cool though.

I forgot one major detail.

Jaleel White = NO NO NO

But if this is a fanfiction, it's not like that'll be an issue...

Hm... it's a tough question.. The first 13 episodes were pretty standard, now that I have watched all 26 just about a month ago. The first 13 were...well, just too kiddy, but I felt that Ben Hurst, when he began writting about ep 12, 14, had a much more serious tone within the series that gathered a lot of potential by 'The Doomsday Project'.

I this as we are critics, we tend to forget that this aired almost 15 years ago, the the 90's cartoons, although memorable, followed the traditions of the cartoons of the 70s and 80s. (btw, I thought the name 'Snivley' was a TOTALLY lame 70/80/90's thing)
Personally, the darker tone taken by ther series, suc as the past, was a welcome change from a usually 'bright' cartoon universe elsewise.
That model of Robotnik, mirrored in the STH comics, is one of my favorite models, because the voice and look for him in the cartoon was pretty damn good too. The new 'eggman' look doesn't do too much for me..hell, I grew up with robotnik.

I do, however, like the comic's take on 'eggman' in which he is a really evil character, and a good one, just like original Robotnik.

In the end, though, I think that the series had a lot of potential, which was simply cut short, but easily gave rise to an engrossing comic (whose first 30 issues were lame like the 1st 13 eps). I think SatAM deserves more credit, and I happened to love the show when I was 6/7.
Watching it almost 15 years later, I still liked it, and that's a pretty good thing considering how it aged. Got me into the comics after not knowing/reading them for 13 years.

Jaleel White = NO NO NO

Jaleel white STUNK in AoStH, and in Satam, but rocked in Sonic Underground. (Yea, Jaleel White starred in alot of Sonic cartoons because of his "Oh so cartoony voice".)

lolz @ all this

The one point of Craig's that I will defend is #7. The writers have gone on record saying that the canceled 3rd season would have seen a lot more Tails.
