I'm working on a Sonic fan-fiction that is a mix of both the Archie and SatAM universes with my own ideas thrown in. I know that a continent and a country have been mentioned in the comic (Downunda and Mercia respectively). I've been trying to come up with names for a pseudo-Japanese country and for the continent Mobotropolis and Knothole are on (which I'm guessing is a pseudo-North America).
So, any good name suggestions?

Well I'm not sure if the comic writers were aware of this (they probably were), but Mercia was an anglo-saxon kingdom in what is now England. Is it the comic version of the UK or it's own country? I don't read the comics, see.
If I were you I'd avoid pun names like Downunder as much as possible. I know you can't change Downunda itself and you may think differently so~
But anyway, if we look at Mercia, we could use the idea of areas, cities or historical areas or events for names. Nothing super-famous like Tokyo or something though.

The pronunciation of Japan in Japanese is Nippon-koku or Nihon-koku according to lovely Wikipedia. Nihon alone sounds quite cool. Of course we have Mount Fugi, along with the Hida, Kiso, and Akaishi mountains. There are a variety of lakes, such as Noroto, Saroma and Kizaki.

According to Wikipedia, the Mercia in the comics is a mix of France and England.
Anyways, I like your suggestion. I think I'm going to go with Nihon for the Japanese-esque country, and Im sure I can find uses for the other names you've mentioned as well. North America is going to be rather tricky, but hopefully I can find something. Thanks for the help! =D

Personally, I kinda followed the tradition of some of the first Sonic SatAM fanfic writers and just named the continent where Mobotropolis was the "Northern Continent." I had plans involving a Southern Continent as well.
Not sure if that particularly helps at all, but it's something that I've used in the past, long ago.

well if you plan to do a desert like area like the sandopolis zone that could be an egypt like place.
