                                Shadows
Sallys eyes opened. She sat up and shivered slightly, disturbed by the dream she had. In it Sonic was being crushed by a huge bot and she was being forced to watch while Eggman laughed incessantly. It had been over a month since Sally had used the powers of the emeralds to destroy Eggmans mighty bot, Ardina, and she was still getting nightmares. Reaching out, she turned on her bedside light and relaxed in its glow. When she was a little girl and she had a bad dream, she would wake up to see her parents sleeping soundly then she would go back to sleep herself, confident that her parents were there. But not now. It had shaken her something bad. Pulling aside the duvet she stood up as the sleep ebbed from her mind and body. Even though she was 17 now she still wanted someone to be with her. She always hated being on her own. Opening the door she glanced into the dark hall, she shuddered as she stepped back inside and fished out the torch that she kept in her bedside drawer in case of emergencys. She checked the clock before turning off the light. It was 1:32 in the morning. Clicking on the torch, she wound her way out of her room and made for Sonics room. He would be there for her, he always was. She passed by Bunnies room, from which a loud snore could be heard, and Antoines room which was oddly quiet. Upon reaching Sonics room she gently knocked on the door. After she got no answer she knocked a little louder and called his name. Soon she heard the sounds of movement, followed by the padding of bare feet. The door opened and a bleary eyed Sonic appeared. Hey, Sal. Whats up? Sonic asked as he smiled at her sleepily. Can I sleep with you tonight? I had another one. Sally whispered. Even though Sally often scolded herself for these late night visits, she couldnt let go of the fact that she was still a kid deep down. Sure, come in. Sonic replied as he stepped aside to let Sally in. Sonic had turned on the main light so Sally squinted as she entered his room. Sonic put and arm round her and used his free hand to turn off the light. He lead her back to his bed using her torch as a guide. As she turned off the torch, Sonic pulled the duvet down to just above his waist. The heating is broken again. Sonic explained as he put Sallys torch on his bedside cabinet. Sally turned on her side and snuggled up to Sonics shoulder. Thanks Sonic. She uttered as tears rolled out her eyes and landed softly on the pillow. Sonic turned to face her resting her head on his chest and putting his arms around her. No need to thank me, Sal. Sonic told her as he pulled her close. Sally slowly raised her hands and laced them around Sonics back, her fingers running through his quills. Sonic lightly kissed her on the forehead. Im going to hate myself in the morning for this. Sally told him. Dont Sonic told her. As he did so Sally closed her eyes, forcing out the tears within. Sonic felt them on his chest. Dont cry Sal. Im here for you and nobody is going to change that. Sally held him closer. Try to get some sleep, and if you have another nightmare, just remember that Im here for you and I always will be. From nights first darkness to mornings first light. Sonic was always so poetic. Sally was always put at ease. Snuggling up to the one she loved she closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep.

Chapter 1: Shadows
Sally woke the next morning to Sonic gently stroking her hair. She closed her eyes again and pretended to be asleep. She wanted this to last. Are you awake Sal? Sonic asked. She didnt reply. Sally felt his arm gently hold her closer. His shoulder was soft and warm and Sally had no intention of getting up. But as she lay there she remembered that she had something important to tell Sonic. But it could wait, now was not the time. I know your awake you little minx. Sonic said. But you deserve a lie-in. Sally snuggled up to him to show her appreciation. Nothing was planned for today. It was one of those lazy days that everyone spent either in bed or doing their own thing. Sally wanted to spent all day with Sonic, not being disturbed by anyone. But the peace wasnt to last. A knock at the door sounded the end of it. Who is it? Sonic called out. It is I, the great Antoine. Sally let out a little groan as she got up from Sonics shoulder. Ill deal with this, you just rest. Sonic said as he got up to answer the door. Sally lent back on Sonics pillow and was to find it was fairly soft. Sonics conversation with Antoine was short lived as he closed the door with a sigh. Sally looked up, Whats wrong Blue? Sally asked blearily. Seems like the Eastern Freedom fighters are coming to make a few changes to our base. Sonic told her, reading from the folded note that Antoine gave him. I suppose I had better go see-
No Sal. Sonic said, cutting her off. You are going to lie there and Ill get you some breakfast. Now I dont want to hear any excuses. Youve worked hard every single day and I believe you deserve this lie-in. And with that Sonic disappeared out the door. Sally let out an exasperated sigh. Once Sonic set his mind on something it was set. Sonic returned a little while later with a tray and placed it on Sallys lap as she sat up.
So, did you sort out the Eastern FF at all?
Yeah, it seems that as Eggman is getting more dangerous so we need to be prepared.
What changes are they going to be making to my base?
Whos base? Sonic asked.
OUR base. Sally said. Sonic loved it when he teased Sally like that.
Well, theyre going to be putting in a few new storerooms, an office for Intelligence gathering, as well as a bigger Comms room, an armoury and a firing range.
Firing range? Sally asked.
Yeah, but dont you worry, some of the Southern FF will be coming up here to show us how to use all this new stuff.
Sally sighed. The last thing she wanted was outside help from the other factions. Ill leave you to your breakfast. Sonic said as he left. Sonic. Sally called out as he turned toward the door. Hmm? Sonic answered. Sally was silent for a moment. Thanks.for the breakfast. Sonic smiled at her as he left the room. Sally silently cursed herself. She had the perfect opportunity to tell him and she let it slip by. She knew she had to tell him, but she didnt have the heart to tell him. It would crush him, but not telling him was crushing her. What was she to do? Sally picked up a fork and stuck it into the sausage. All of a sudden she had just lost her appetite.

I like this alot. This is one of the first Fics I've really gotten into. Very Romantic. It's a thing that I never thought about in anything Sonic before. I'll keep reading if you keep writing.
Thanks for the comment super shadow 70. Heres the next chapter for your and everyone elses viewing pleasure.
Chapter 3: Shadows
The Southern Freedom fighters arrived later that day. Sonic dealt with them, directing them to the area that needed excavating. Sally had gotten up and wandered around but Sonic always told her to go back to his bed and rest. As Sally sat in Sonic, she knew she had to tell him, but he always shooed of back here. Well, maybe if she waited for him to come to her rather then her go to him, she might get a chance to tell him. Sally didnt have to wait long as Sonic entered shortly afterwards. Hows the excavation going? Sally asked. Its coming along fine. They should get it finished within the week. Sally smiled upon hearing of this news. She pulled the duvet back to get out but Sonic was there. Now I told you to have a lie-in. He told her. I just need to stretch my legs thats all. I cant sit in bed all day. Sonic reluctantly stepped back. I know your trying to make things comfortable for me, but I do need to do something or else Ill be bored. Sally said as she slipped on her waistcoat. Sonic stood there with his head hung. Sally stepped over to him and placed her hands in his shoulders. I love how much you think of me Blue, but I need to get up and walk around. Also thanks for dealing with the Southern FF for me.
I only thought you could use the rest. Im sorry if-
Sonic, what are you apologising for? Youve done nothing wrong. Sally said cutting him off.
I know that Sal, sometimes I think I might be causing more problems for you then helping out. .
No, Blue. Your not causing any problems. I dont know where you thought that up but your more help then hindrance. Sally spoke to him. Sonic raised his head to be greeted with Sallys warm, welcoming eyes. He said nothing as he smiled and held Sally close. His hand lightly ruffled her hair as he pulled her close, sliding his other hand under her waistcoat as he did. Sallys hand picked its way through his quills and came to rest in the middle of his back. Her other hand slid around his neck. They hugged in the middle of the room for a while before they parted. Lets go see whats going on with the Southern Freedom Fighters then. Sally said as she started toward the door. The sounds of construction could be faintly heard as Sally and Sonic approached the mess hall. Sounds like their hard at work. Sally commented. Yeah, at the rate their working it should be finished in the next few days. Oh I forgot to tell you. A weapons specialist is coming here from the Eastern Freedom Fighters to teach us how to use the firearms in the firing range. Sonic told Sally as they headed in the direction of the noise.
Whats his name?
Turtle Guy. Apparently hes the best when it comes to weapons.
Sally didnt like the idea of having live arms in her base, but as Eggman was getting more dangerous, it couldnt be helped. Rounding a corner, Sally was shocked to see that cable, drills, wheelbarrows of rubble and a petrol generator cluttered up the corridor. Careful, its a little bit cluttered. Sonic told her as they picked their way through the rubble toward the planning room. Upon entering, they both noticed Tails sitting on the sofa, his nose buried in a comic as usual, completely oblivious to the noise. Any messages! Sally yelled over the noise of rock drills and the generator. No, no messages! Rotor yelled back. Come on Sal. Lets go outside. Sonic said in Sallys ear. Sally nodded as they left the noisy base for the piece of the Great Forest. As soon as they stepped out side, Sally relaxed. As they walked to Lookout Point, Sally wondered why Eggman had shown no activity. It had almost been a month. Sonic held her hand as he lead Sally to Lookout Point. They both sat down on the log in the open clearing on the hill. Robotropilis could be seen in the distance, a lit danger in the distance. Around that was a large grey area outlined by a thin line of green with misty grey mountains providing the backdrop. Sally gazed over at the landscape, hoping to one day get rid of the ugly metal city that stood near the forest and replace it with a city of white stone and lush meadows. Sonic put his arm around her waist. Sally lent her head on his shoulder in response. The air was fresh and there was hardly any breeze at all. The sky shone a deep and brilliant blue on the loving couple below it. This peace was interrupted by a low rhythmic clanking of gears and cogs. It started off low but slowly grew in pitch. Do you hear that? Sally asked. Yeah, sounds like one of Eggmans robo-goons. Wait here Sal, Ill be right back. With that he sped off down the hill. Sally followed. Sonic was right. It was one of Eggmans Robo-goons, but there were two of them. Sonic ducked behind a large rock as he watched the two Swatbots made their way through the forest. Sally jogged up to Sonics side. Swatbots. She gasped. Wait here Sal, Ill take them out. Sonic, wait. Sally said but it was too late. Sonic had already made his way toward both Swatbots. Sally wanted to observe them and see what they were doing, but then again they could have found Knothole. Sonic quickly laid waste to both of them. Both bots had their backs turned and they didnt see Sonic coming. Before they knew what was japanning, they were hunks of scrap metal. Sally stepped out from behind the rock and walked up to Sonic. Are you o.k.? She asked.
Yeah, Im fine. These hunk-a-junk bots were no match for me.
Well, as long as your alright, Im glad. Still, I wonder why Eggmans Swatbots were here?
You got me Sal. Maybe it has something to do with what their collecting. Lets take a look.
Sonic started walking toward the nearest basket when he let out a small yelp.
Ow.
Whats wrong?
Something scratched me. Sonic said, looking at his arm.
Probably a bush or something. Sally suggested.
Yeah, your probably right.
Sonic walked over to one of the baskets that lay on the floor and peered inside. Sally joined him. As she too peered in all she found was dirt, rocks and plants.
Whats all this rubbish? Sonic asked pulling out a clump of dirt and stones.
Looks like Eggman was getting his bots to collect soil and plant samples. But why?
Best if you dont think about Sal. Lets get back to what we were doing before these metal heads showed up.
Sally agreed and they headed back to Lookout Point.

Shadows: Chapter Four
Sonic and Sally spent the best part of the day outside. As they lay in the grass next to each other after a short game of tag, Sally found herself thinking why cant every day be like this. But she knew that as long as Eggman remained in control, she would never get days like this maybe ever again. She turned on her side and lay here head on her out stretched arm. Sonic seemed lost in thought. You alright Blue? Sally asked. Huh? Sonic asked, snapping out of his train of thought. You were lost in thought there. Sally said with a small smile. Oh, I was just wondering. This day has been the best in all the time we have been fighting Eggman. I just want it to last forever. Sonic had been thinking the same thing she had been. She shuffled up a bit closer to him. Well, when we beat Eggman, well have all of the perfect days we want. Sonic put out an arm and pulled Sally to his side. But they would mean nothing without you. Sonic said, turning his head to look at her. Sally smiled and came in closer. She put her arms across his chest and under his neck. Sonic rested one hand under his head, while he held Sally close with the other. Sally snuggled up close to Sonics side, resting her head on his chest. Sonic cast a glance down at her and smiled gently. Taking his hand out from behind his head, he deftly manipulated the hand around Sally to pull back the wrist band of his white glove to view his digital watch. 3:34. He pulled the wrist band back up and gently rested his hand on Sallys side. Sally snuggled up closer, smiling a soft smile as she did so. It seemed to Sonic as if Eggman had never come to their world, as if the whole war had never started. It was nice to forget that things were bad, even if it was for a short while. Sally churned the thought in her head. She had to tell him, but not now. Not when the mood was right. Sonic gently ruffled her hair. I suppose we had better get back to the base. The guys will be wondering whats happened to us. Sonic said at last. Sally sighed. She just wanted a little bit longer. They untangled themselves from each other and made their way back to Knothole. The base was just as noisy as when they left it. As they neared there was a dull floomp and a cloud of dust shot out of the door. The workers as well as the Freedom Fighters staggered out, coughing. Sally ran down to find out what those Southern FF had done to her base. What happened? What have you done to my base? Sally fumed at one of the workers. Hey, wes did nothin He spluttered.
Well, you obviously did something or else you wouldnt be out here would you.
Talk to our boss, Hell tell ya. The workman coughed. Sally stormed over to a largely built racoon in a blue hardhat.
What have you done to my base!? Sally yelled.
Hey, keep yers tail on. The foreman choked. Deciding that he didnt like the foremans tone, Sonic stepped up, placing himself between Sally and the foreman.
O.k. pal. You have 10 seconds to tell us what you and your meat head crew did to our base or Ill pound you into the middle of next week.
Hey, no need to get aggressive pal. Part of the ceiling just came down, and before you get uptight, well clean it up. O.k.? Once my men stop dying that well get to work. With that the foreman staggered off. You o.k. Sal? Sonic asked, turning to Sally. Yeah Im fine Blue. Dont worry about him, hes not worth the trouble. She replied. After 15 minutes, the workman filed back in and set to work clearing up what had once been the ceiling. Sally stood at Sonics side as they watched the work go ahead. I hope we have no more accidents like this or we wont have a base. Sally whispered in Sonics ear. I hear ya Sal, I hear ya. Sonic whispered back. In three short days, all the work was finished. Both Sonic and Sally were amazed at how fast work had been completed. Even though Sally hated the addition of a firing range she knew that she didnt have a choice. O.k. Heres the combination for the weapons storage. Some of our guys will be down with the weapons specialist to fit a key card reader to the armoury. Now in case one of your team forgets their key card, they can still open the door by using the four digit code but that only to be used in emergencies as it cancels the key card totally. The foreman told Sally as the workman packed up. Sally was glad to see them go as was Sonic. He didnt like how some of them were eying up Sally. They both entered the firing range. A large open alley some 12 metres in length with a back door that opened up to add another 12 metres for sniper and explosives testing. The range consisted of a control room as well as a weapons foyer where the guns would be handed out and then taken back in. Sally hated the whole concept of guns, she found them to be nothing but instruments of death, but since Eggman was playing rough, they had to play that bit rougher to keep up. I dont like this Blue. I like the base the way it was. Sally said to Sonic. I know but those orders came from the king. I dont like the idea anymore then you but we have to do something if Eggman decides that he wants to play with the big boys. Sally knew he was right. Over the last 2 months Eggmans bots had been getting more violent. Guns were now replacing the shock rods and taser guns that the old Swatbots had. Whens that weapons specialist arriving? Sally asked as they made their way out of the alley. Tomorrow, along with the new security team to fit the new locks as well as the shipment of arms and ammo.
Lets hope we dont have to use them.
I hope we dont have to use them either. Sonic replied.
And with that they left the firing range to continue with their other duties for the rest of the day. Sally awoke the next morning, She went to curse herself for not setting her alarm when she realised that Nicole was still being repaired. Most of the parts that Rotor had ordered hadnt come through. She swung her legs out of bed. She glanced over her shoulder and noticed the empty space beside her. She sighed. Just once she would like to wake up and find Sonic lying next to her. Sighing again, she stood up, got herself ready and pulled on her boots and waistcoat before heading out her door. As she left, she heard faint bangs in the distance. Curious, she headed in the direction of the sounds and found the entire Freedom Fighter team in the range. A tortoise with a helmet and a side pack stood with his back to the observation window through which Sally was peering through. Scanning the rows of booths, she saw the back of Sonic in one of them. She went to the bullet proof glass door and found a new key card terminal had been installed. Of course, the new key card terminals were being added today, she forgot all about it. Walking back to the observation window, she pounded on the glass to attract the attention of any of the occupants. The tortoise turned round and saw her. Her called out something and all the others stopped firing, then he walked to the inner door and opened it up before walking across the small weapons lobby to open up the outer door. Sonic quickly joined his side. The door slid open. Yeah, can I help you? The tortoise asked as he lent against the door frame. Yes you can. Who are you? She asked. The names Turtle Guy. Im the weapons specialist that you were waiting for. Suddenly Sallys mind clicked. Oh right, Sorry. Im still a little bit sleepy. I was up late last night going over past operations. She lied. So, you must be Sally Acorn. Sonic here has told me all about you.
He has? she asked looking at Sonic.
Yeah, come on in. Youre a little bit late for my lessons as they are nearly over.
Nearly over? Sally asked.
Yeah. Ive been teaching this lot how to shoot since 9 oclock.
Suddenly Sally remembered she didnt check the time. What is the time?
Turtle guy looked down at his watch. 1.39. He replied. Sally felt awkward. She hadnt meant to sleep in that late. Well, I guess I could stay behind and teach you want you missed.
Ill do that. Sonic finally spoke up.
But you dont know what to teach her. She missed out on the basics and Im just finishing the moderate stuff. Well be moving onto more advanced stuff.
Why dont you call for a break and Ill quickly teach her what she needs to know. Besides, she would need someone she knows to teach her and that would be me. Sonic answered back.
I dunno. You hardly have gripped the basics yourself. Turtle guy said, placing his hands on his hips, flashing off his custom 9mm that sat in a hip holster to Sally.
Well, shell need that special attention, and only I can do it. If you get what I mean. Sonic replied, placing his hands on his hips as well. Turtle Guy looked between Sonic to Sally then back to Sonic again. Sally didnt know what was going on. All this talk of special training and Sonic helping her was flowing past her like water in a stream.
Oh. OH! Right I gotcha. Turtle Guy said. He turned to the assembled crowd. O.K. everyone, Lunch. He called. Everyone seemed to breath a sigh of relief as they lay their firearms down and slowly filed out of the room. Turtle Guy was about to leave with them when Sonic stopped him. Hey, arent you forgetting something. Turtle Guy suddenly realised that he had something for Sally. He reached in to one of his pouches and took out a square piece of plastic and a piece of paper. This is your key card and emergency pin just in case you lose the card. Turtle Guy said handing them to Sally. Turtle Guy brought up the rear as he left through the door. Right, now to teach you how to shoot. Now I know you hate guns and the I know that you dont like the idea of having to use one, but this could just save you. Sonic told her. He lead her to a booth. Wait her. he told her before he scampered off to the booth that he had been using. He reappeared with one hand holding a Desert Eagle 50 A.E, and the other hand behind his back. Now I had the Eastern FF guys make this especially for you. he told her. He brought his hand out from behind his back and held out the Magnum revolver that rested in it. Sally noticed the intricate scroll work up the barrel as well as her families coat of arms emblazoned on the grip. I called up the guys yesterday and I had them make this for you. Now I know you probably dont like it, but I wanted you to have your own firearm. Be careful though, its loaded. Sally took it and found it to be fairly light. It fitted her hand snugly and felt well balanced. Sonic handed her some ear protectors as well as some goggles. Now lets see how you do to begin with. Sonic said, undoing the safety on her gun and pressing a button on the side of the booth which caused a wooden target to drop out of the ceiling. Best brace yourself. That thing has a massive kickback. Sally braced herself and pointed the gun at the target and pulled the trigger. The gun erupt to life with a loud bang and a force that made Sally stagger back. She wouldve fallen to the floor had Sonic not been there to catch her. He put her back on her feet again. Well, that was new. Sally said, blushing slightly as she spoke. Lets see how you did. Sonic said as he pushed another button that brought the target in close. A chunk was taken out of the side but apart form that, Sally had missed completely. Sonic repressed the button and send the target back out. Here, let me show you how to aim. He said. Sonic stood behind Sally and reached his arms over her own and holding her hands in his. He palced his head on her shoulder and aimed the Magnum. Now once you have the enemy sighted, you just pull the trigger. Dont worry about flying back. Im here. Sally breathed as she prepared for the kick. It came and once again she was knocked back, but this time into Sonic. She looked round at him, blushing furiously. All he did was smile back. After a short while Sally got down to feeling the power of her new firearm. Sonic had also shown her how to reload, what bullet her gun took as well as how to use the speed loaders properly. Well, now that youve got to grips with the basics, what do you say to a little shooting contest?
Ok. As long as you dont let me win. Sally said to him.
Ok. Whatever you say Sal. We each have 2 rounds. In my case thats 2 magazines worth, but youll have 3 speed loaders. Sonic took up a position in the booth next to hers.
Sonic set up a couple of fresh targets. Ok. On 3. 1.2.3!
As soon as Sonic shouted out three, Sally opened fire. The contest was short but load as both emptied their rounds into the wooden targets. When Sally fired her last round, all she heard was the light clink of the shell casing hitting the floor, signalling the end of the competition. Sonic stepped beside her and pressed the button to reel in the target. Taking hers down her reeled in his target and compared them. I win. he said turning to her. Sally wasnt in the least bit upset. Your good Blue. She said, taking off the ear protectors and the goggles. Soon the thought rose up in her head. They were alone and now seemed to be a perfect time. Sally churned the thought in her head again. Should she tell him now? Sonic noticed Sally looking a bit sullen. You alright? Sonic asked. I have something to tell you Sonic, and its not good. Now Sonic stood up straight and was alert. What is it? He asked.
THIS LIES I COULD NEVER BE TRUSTED AROUND A WEAPON 😛

Shadows: Chapter 5
Sally took a deep breath. Now was the time she had been dreading. She didnt know how Sonic would react. What is it Sal? Asked Sonic, visibly worried. Sally steeled herself for the emotional as well as any physical force. I,I. Sally found the words stuck in her throat. Its alright Sal, take it slow. Sonic said, taking his hands in hers. As soon as he did that Sally felt a surge of confidence. Icant have children. She finally spoke. What? Sonic asked. The news had hit him full in the face. When my father ordered the abortion he also ordered me to have a hysterectomy. I mustve been knocked out as I dont remember anything. I only found out after I got a letter from the castle doctor. Sonic took a step back, shock written all over his face. His hands slipped from hers and hung limply at his side. No children? He asked. Sally nodded slowly in response. Sonic turned his back, not wanting to show his rising hatred and anger. Sally stepped up to Sonic and placed her hand on his shoulder. Sonic are you Sally started but removed her hand when she felt Sonics shoulders hunch up. She stepped back in fright as she watched his hands contort into fists and his whole body shake slightly. Sally slowly back toward the door. Her heart wanted to stay with Sonic but her mind screamed at her to run. Then Sonics shoulders slowly relaxed and his hands unclenched. He looked over his shoulder at sally. She stopped moving and waited. Sonic returned to face the direction he was turned and placed a hand over his eyes. Sally walked back up to his side. Sonic removed his hand and looked at her with tears in his eyes. Im sorry if I scared you Sal. I just couldnt control myself. Sonic apologised. Its alright Blue, I know how you feel. With that Sally felt the tears rise. She wasnt as strong as Sonic and she threw her arms around him and cried into his shoulder. Sonic held her close and gently massaged her back as she broke down. Sonic was the only person she could hold on to, the only person who could provide her with a place to feel safe. Sonic gently kissed Sallys neck, trying to get her to calm down. He snuggled against her hair and pulled her close as he felt her tears gather on his shoulder. It seemed to Sonic that events were conspiring to break them apart. Sonic got the feeling that he was being watched and raised his head. A figure leaned against the wall, half covered in shadow from the hall locker. It was faint but he could see a smile. An evil smile like something had just gone their way. Sonic watched as the figure slowly stood up, turned its back and left. Sonic didnt need to see the face to know who it was. The foppish hairdo was a big giveaway as was the scar. Sonic gritted his teeth as the figure disappeared. Sonic are you alright? Sally asked. She had felt Sonics arms get rather tight around her. Yeah, Im fine. What say we get out of here and go to Lookout Point. Sally quickly agreed. Sonic put an arm around her and lead her out of the range carrying his Desert Eagle and Sallys Magnum. In the foyer, Sonic opened up a locker with his name on it and stored his D. Eagle inside, locked it and then lead Sally to hers, quickly telling her that this was her locker to store her weapons as well as ammo and any other paraphernalia. Sally found it good to have some new lockers. Better then the old battered ones that they had. Sonic took out a piece of paper from his glove and passed it to her. This is the combination for your locker. Keep it safe. Sonic told her. I will. Sally replied, twiddling the combination. The inside was very spacious, a rack on the door to hold shotguns and rifles as well as shelves for ammo and a rack for hand guns. An open space underneath stored any body armour or other things. Storing her magnum on the rack, she closed and locked the door, slipping the piece of paper into an inside pocket of her waistcoat. She detested the use of guns but she had no choice, now that Eggman was arming the Swat bots. Closing her locker and twiddling the combo lock, she rejoined Sonic as he lead her out of the base to their special spot on the hill. They sat on the log and watched as the sunset on the horizon. Sally held onto Sonics arm as they both sat in silence watching the crimson sky, turn blue, black as the sun gave way to the night. Sally felt Sonics arm slide out from hers and wrap around her shoulders as Sonic pulled her closer. She rested her head on Sonics shoulder, closing her eyes as she did so. She had forgotten all about the incident in the firing range. Sonic always made her feel right. She felt his other hand stroke her hair as she held onto him. She opened her eyes and looked up to see his face illuminated by the moon as he smiled gently back at her. Then, sitting up, she placed her lips on his, pulling him close as she did so. In that moment, nothing seemed to matter anymore to her, only Sonic. As they parted, she saw at small tear gather in Sonics eye. They then both turned to gaze out over the horizon. Suddenly, a white flash of light sprung up from the dark ruins of Robotropilis.
Whats that? Sally said, somewhat startled.
Whats what?
I just saw a light in Robotropilis.
You must be mistaken, Sal. Dont you remember Eggman moving out?
Yeah, but all the- Sally was stopped short as another burst of white light issued forth.
You see that! Sally said excitedly, pointing into the distance.
Yeah, I saw that. Whats making that light? Sonic mused.
We should get the others.
Or we could take a quick looky-loo. Sonic said.
No Sonic. Its probably dangerous. We should get the others.
Oh come on Sal, by the time we get the others together and start off, itll probably be gone. We could go scope it out, and if its dangerous, well come right back and warn the others.
Ok, but any sign of danger and we come right back, ok? Sally asked.
Of course Sal. At the first sign of danger well come right back.
With that, he scooped Sally up in his arms and headed toward the ruined city to find out the source of the light.
0_0 I was NOT ready for that!
But hey, nice bit of soft Tradgy. and a couple of things...
1) Evil Antoine is gone and the good one is back. (But if keeping him Evil will be useful then keep it that way).
2) Max is not King anymore, Elias is.
hey, and a cliffhanger too!

Shadows Chapter 6
As they approached, Sonic slowed to a light jog. He knew something wasnt right. He clutched Sally closer to him as he entered the ruins. He half expected a Swatbot to jump out from a wall and blast them, or a hoverbot to pass overhead. Thankfully, none of them appeared, but still Sonic held Sally close. As they snuck through the ruins, with only the sunset light to guide them, Sonic crept up to an old warehouse.
I think this is where the light came from. Sally said to Sonic.
I hear voices. Sonic said as his ears pricked up. Sally heard them too.
Sonic crept around one side of the warehouse and noticed a hole. Luckily, a pile of debris would allow them to clamber up to peek inside. Setting Sally down, they both carefully climbed the mountain of debris to the top. Shielded by a large piece of metal them lay prone as they surveyed the interior.
All around the warehouse, thick cables that lead form small banks of computers and large glass tubes filled with a weird liquid. All of the tubes lead to a single capsule that lay on the floor in the centre of the room. Sally propped herself up to get a better look. All around, various scientists, many of which Sally recognized hurried to and fro between the tubes, the computers and back again.
What are they doing? Sally asked.
I have no idea Sal. Sonic replied.
As they surveyed the scene, trying to figure out what was going on, a door hissed open. As both Sally and Sonic turned their gaze to the door they were taken aback by the figure that entered. Dr Eggman. Sally watched open mouthed as the doctor strode across the warehouse floor. She had thought the doctor had turned tail and ran after the whole emerald incident. As Eggman strode across the floor, a scientist tripped over a cable and fell face down in Eggmans path. Everyone stopped working and stared at the lone researcher as Eggman strode up to him. Sonic and Sally were too far away, but they thought they saw Eggman smile. The researcher just lay on the floor quivering. Suddenly, Eggman shot out a hand and grabbed the poor man by the lapels of his lab coat as he was lifted bodily into the air.
Next time you block my path, your as good as a Mega muck test subject. Eggman spat through his teeth. The scientist just quivered in Eggmans clutches. Then Eggman threw the scientist into a glass tube. Luckily the tube didnt break. The scientist picked himself up and hobbled off to wherever he was going. Sally gasped as she watched the brutal scene unfold before her. She covered her mouth with both hands as she watched the researcher rebound off the tube. Sally felt a tear leave her eye. How could Eggman do that?
She felt an arm on her shoulder, looking over at Sonic he motioned with his head to come closer to him. As she shifted closer to him Sonic pulled her under him. She felt his arms cross in front of her and she felt a little bit safer. Eggman was glaring at the other scientists.
Back to work! All of you! Eggman shouted.
The scientists immediately went back to what they were doing. Eggman walked over to the capsule where a purple hedgehog in a white lab coat was busy checking off items on a clipboard.
So Safronic. Is everything going according to plan?
Y-y-yes Doctor. Safronic stammered.
Is our little experiment ready. Eggman asked through gritted teeth.
Yes Doctor. I finished all the tests and they all check out.
Good. So now we can release our little friend then? Eggman asked.
Yes. Safronic said.
Good. Start the incubation procedure!
All the scientists dropped what they were doing and swarmed round either the glowing banks of computers or the bubbling tubes of liquid.
Sonic and Sally lent in even more to see what was going on. The capsule hummed to life and glowed and unearthly green blue. Sonic felt Sally grasp his hand, he grasped it back to offer her some comfort as they watched the capsule pulsate. Soon, the pulsating got faster and brighter. Then it stopped altogether.
Start the reanimation process.
As the doctor finished, the capsule hissed and opened. Sonic and Sally felt the adrenaline pumping through them as they lent forward even more to peek inside the capsule. Protective cryogenic gas escaped, clouding up the room. A figure slowly sat up. The whole room was hushed as the being examined its arms and body, then its surroundings. Eggman beamed at his creation as the mist cleared, holding his arms behind his back. Sonic and Sally couldnt make out the face but this person had upward tilted black quills, lined with red. Slowly the figure climbed out of the capsule, its bare feet padding on the stone floor. Sonic and Sally cowered back as the unseen figure took a few shaky steps. Eggman stepped forward.
Who are you? the figure asked in a hushed, husky voice.
I am Doctor Eggman. Your creator and father. Eggman replied.
Father. The figure replied.
I made you to hunt down a enemy that is unlike any before. You are a product of his DNA. You can do all he can and more.
Tell me the name of your enemy?
Sonic the hedgehog. It is from his blood that you are born. You can do everything he can do and more. But first you must protect your feet. You cant run after sonic barefoot now, so I made you these. With a flourish, Eggman brought his one arm forward. In his hands he held a strange pair of shoes.
These are rocket boots. Eggman began. State of the art, they let you run at the same speed if not faster then Sonic.
The figure took the shoes and looked at them.
Thank you.Father.
Come, I have much to teach you and you have so little time to learn. Eggman said as he turned toward a door.
I want to know one thing before we start.
Yes, what is it? Eggman asked as he looked over his shoulder.
Whats my name?
Well, lets see. Since you can do everything Sonic can do you are like his image, his Eggman stopped. The name had come to him. Shadow. Yes, Your name henceforth shall be, Shadow.
Shadow. Shadow repeated.
Come Shadow, we start your training immediately.
And with that Shadow followed Eggman out the door.
Heres Chapter seven people.
Shadows Chapter Seven
We had better get back and warn the others. Sally whispered to Sonic. He nodded in silent agreement as they started to descend the mountain of debris. Suddenly Sallys foot slipped and sent a load of pebble and old metal tubing bouncing down the pile. They both froze, waiting to see what would happen. Suddenly, an alarm rang as they were illuminated by a bright white light.
Intruder alert, intruder alert. Suspects spotted at east warehouse. All armed units respond.
Sonic grabbed Sally and rolling on his back, slid down the rest of the debris. Taking Sallys hand he lead her away from the warehouse, with the hoverbot in hot pursuit. Jumping over pieces of concrete and ducking under piping, he was able to stall the hoverbot long enough to look for a hiding place. A large piece concrete with a large crack in it seemed to provide a perfect place to hide.
Sally, over here. Sonic told her as he lead her to the crack. Sonic jumped in and pressed himself up against the one side of the crack. Sally entered shortly afterwards. Sonic put his arms round her and pulled her close to him, away from the crack. No sooner did he do that, then a bright white light swept into the hole. Sonic and Sally lay still as the light hovered in the hole, while the small whirr of a camera surveyed the area looking for them. The light sooner disappeared and with it, the hoverbot. Sonic sighed with relief as he let go of Sally.
That was close. Sonic said.
We gotta warn the others. Sally told him, freeing herself and pulling herself out of the hole. She turned back to see Sonic haul himself out of the hole. She gasped as she saw his back. It had been skinned really badly.
Sonic, your back. Its grazed.
Its nothing Sal. Sonic told her as he climbed out of the hole.
How did you do that? Sally asked.
Mustve been when I slide down that huge pile of debris.
Well, Ill get you treated when we return to base. Sally said as she checked the horizon. She saw several hoverbots patrolling in the distance. It would only be a matter of time until one of them swept over this area. She was swept off her feet as Sonic scooped her up in his arms and sped away to warn the other Freedom Fighters about this new threat.
Sonic entered the base to find it nearly deserted. Everyone must be in bed, he thought as he carried Sally over the threshold. Putting her down, Sally took his hand and lead him to the infirmary.
Take a seat there. Sally said, pointing to an examination bed while she rummaged around in the medicine cabinet for some antiseptic. Sonic sucked in air through gritted teeth as he sat down. Sally found some gauze and antiseptic. She knelt down on the examining bed behind him. She moved his tail to one side to avoided kneeling on it and assessed his back. It was pretty scratched up as well as dirty. She poured some antiseptic on some gauze. Best to start at the top and work down she thought as she emptied some of the contents of the bottle onto the gauze.
This might sting a little ok?
Thats ok. A little pain never hurt me. Sonic replied, smiling over his shoulder.
Ok, here goes. Sally said and placed the wet gauze on his back. The effect was immediate. Sonic took a sharp intake of breath as he tensed up.
Im ok. He said in a strangulated voice.
Sally wiped down his whole back, wanting to do it as quick as possible so Sonic wouldnt be in any pain then he already was. After she wiped away the dirt, it didnt look so bad.
Ok, all done. Sally said when she was pleased with what she had done.
Thanks Sal. Sonic said as he slid off the bed. Sally got off the bed as well.
No problem Blue. She said.
You know I love you. Sonic said, turning to face her.
Hey, whats with this all of a sudden. Sally said, with a small smile.
Oh, its nothing. Sonic replied.
Come on Sonic. I know you and somethings bothering you. What is it?
Well, ever since you told me you couldnt have anymore children, I thought you might not love me as I cant give you kids.
Oh Blue, where did you think of that? I still love you and I always will. It doesnt matter about kids, just as long as I have you.
With that, Sally walked toward Sonic and put her arms around his neck. Sonic hugged her back as she gently massaged his quills. She was so busy worrying about Sonic, the threat that Eggman and Shadow posed had left her mind.
Come on. We had better get to bed. Its late.
Sonic nodded in response and they left the infirmary, Sally turning off the light as they left.
Sally jerked awake, covered in a cold sweat. Shed had another nightmare. This particular one disturbed her badly. In it, she saw the base aflame and in ruin. Shadow stood above Sonic, an evil look in his eyes. He then turned his attention to her. That was when she woke up. Panting as she came back into touch with reality, Sally glanced around the inky black room. Looks like it was another visit to Sonic she thought. The next morning, she awoke with Sonic next to her. The sun had only just risen and she silently cursed herself for what she had done. Well, might as well enjoy it while it lasts she thought. She wondered if the antiseptic had done the job on Sonics back and if it was healed at all. She got comfortable against Sonic as she looked forward to a peaceful little nap, when Sonics bedroom door flew open and Tails burst in.
Sonic, Sonic, Come qui
Tails trailed off when both Sonic and Sally suddenly sat bolt upright. Sonic looked to Sally and back to Tails.
Whats going on? Tails asked innocently.
Its nothing bro. Sally was err Sonic stumbled to find an excuse as he tried to undo the duvet which had wrapped itself around his feet.
I was cold. Sally finished.
Yeah, Sally was cold and I was helping her get warm. Sonic ended as he finally got the duvet unwrapped from his feet. He padded over to Tails and turned him around, walking outside with him and closing the door as he went. Sally quickly got up and straightened up Sonics bed for him. There was no need to go back to bed now that Tails had seen them. If word of this got back to her father, she would have Sonic skinned. Sonic entered, breathing a sigh of relief.
What did you do? Sally asked.
He bought the story about you being cold.
Thats good.
One problem.
Whats that?
He asked if he could sleep with me as his rooms cold.
And you said?
I told him that I would think about it.
Sonic, you know if this gets back to my father, I dread to think what hell do to you. Sally said as she put her hands on his shoulders.
Hey, dont worry about me Sal. Ive been through worse things.
No Blue, Im serious this time. He will do something. You dont know my father like I do and he will do something to you and I dont want that to happen. Sally said as she put her head on Sonics shoulder. Sonic gently put his arms round her and hugged her to him.
Dont worry yourself with that Sal. Tails wont tell anyone. I told him that iof he doesnt Ill get him all those comics he wanted.
Do you intend to do that.? Sally asked.
If I dont, hell either keep pestering me for them or hell tell everyone.
But Sonic, even if you do gemmmppphh.
Sallys last words were silenced as Sonic put his mouth over Sallys in a kiss. She was at first taken by surprised but she soon melted into the kiss. She didnt want to worry but Sonic was the only thing she had left. Her father wasnt in the best terms with her and Robotnik had taken all what she had. She didnt want to lose him. Sonic parted from the kiss.
Dont worry about me Sal. Im not going to put you or me into any type of danger. That I swear on my hedgehog heart. With that he held her to him once more.
What did Tails want? Sally asked.
Nothing much. Sonic lied.
Well, I guess we had better see what it is. Sally said as she parted from Sonic and started to walk toward the door.
Ill see you in the operations room. Sonic said as he sat on his bed, pulling on his trainers.
See you there. Sally said as she walked out the door.
Oh and Sal, thanks for making my bed.
No problem Blue. Sally said, closing the door behind her.
Sally hurried down the corridor back to her room. Opening the door, she found everything as she had left it. She quickly threw the duvet over the bed and quickly got ready. Pulling on her boots she wondered what was important that would have Tails in such a panic. She rushed out the door, pulling on her waistcoat as she went. Rushing along the hall, she entered the operations room to see everyone gathered around the large monitor at one end of the room.
Whats so important? Sally asked.
Sally, where have you been? Rotor asked.
Why?, whats up? Sally asked.
Take a look. Rotor said as he stepped aside.
Sally could see a large photo that showed a large glowing green crystal.
Who sent this?
The Southern FF. They said that this was in a ruin they were exploring. Rotor said.
The master emerald is what they are callin it. Bunnie spoke up.
And we just received reports that Eggman set out with a large group of swatbots, fully armed, toward the cave. Rotor piped up again.
Why didnt anyone tell me? Sally asked.
We sent Tails and he said you were coming. Rotor replied.
Sure you werent caught up in someone? Antoine oozed in his thick French accent.
Everyone ignored him.
Sal, we need to stop Eggman from getting that Emerald. If he gets it, he wont need the seven chaos emeralds, thats just as good if not better. Sonic said.
Ok everyone, I need you to get suited up. Were going after that emerald. Sally said.
Dan, you messaged me about how are your fics on Fanfiction.net.
They are going very well, I've finished putting up TearsOB which got 8 reviews; 7 positive, 1 neutual.
The first 3 chapters of HandsOW have been put up and currently has 3 reviews, all postive.
And one last thing, TearsOB has had over 1500 hits!
Anyway, its interesting on how you brought Shadow into the story. Use him well and you should be succusful.
Ok here we are the next chapter. This took a little while to think up. Hope it turned out ok.
Shadows Chapter eight
While everyone went to the armoury to grab their firearms, Sally poured over the intelligence. A column of Swatbots made up the main force. Heavy weapons in front, snipers toward the back. Doombots bringing up the rear. A pretty formidable force, she thought. Intelligence from the Southern FF put Eggman at a days journey away. He mustve set off last night. Sally read the report and wondered how they were going to catch up to Eggman when she felt two hands on her shoulders. Looking over her shoulder she was greeted by Sonics smiling face.
Hi Sal.
Hi Blue. Sally greeted.
She smiled at him and returned to sifting through the assorted papers on her desk. Sonic leant on the desk next to her and watched as she read a paper before retuning it to the pile that lay scattered on the table.
Anything I can help with? Sonic asked.
Im afraid not Blue. Sally said, not looking up from the table.
So, how far is Eggman to this Master Emerald then?
Reports put him at a days journey. He got a big head start on us. Sally replied without looking over at him.
Only a day? I can get us there lickity split.
Well, he has a rather large gathering of Swat and Doombots. A head on assault isnt the answer and we wont have enough time to assemble the nearest FF base as Eggman and his group wouldve reached the ruin and wiped out the excavation team.
Sonic rocked back on the desk, trying to think of a way to stop Eggman yet also keep this Master Emerald from his hands. Just then a thought struck him.
How about we send a small team?
Pardon? Sally asked as she looked up, a bunch of papers clutched in one hand.
A two-man team has a better chance of moving quickly and catching up to, if not overtaking Eggman. Sonic explained. I could get us there so then we can secure the Emerald.
Ok, Now the question is who to send. Sally said as she folded her arms over her chest. Sally let out a frustrated sigh as she tried to think of someone to send with Sonic. Sonic noticed Sallys sigh and immediately came up with a recommendation to help ease the stress on her.
I thought maybe you and me. I mean youve got all the info, you know where Eggmans going. If you came, it would save time on briefing someone else and we will reach Eggman, if not the ruins, faster.
Your right Blue, even though I dont like it, your right. Ok, tell everyone else to stop what theyre doing and man theyre stations. Then get suited up and meet me back here.
Gotcha Sal. Sonic said as he sped off through the door. Sally picked up an aerial map of the local area. Eggman was marching down a canyon to reach the ruins, but a small ravine down the side took a more direct route to the ruins. Eggman probably didnt know about it. That was their route. Sally looked up as Sonic re-entered the room. He wore something around his shoulders and waist. It seemed to be a fabric belt with a 2 shoulder straps looping over his shoulder. Several small pouches were attached to these shoulder loops.
Here put this on. Sonic said, holding out another of the harnesses.
What is this? Sally asked as she took it.
Its called a side pack. Its used to hold all types of things. Here let me put it on you.
Sonic showed her how to put the side pack on.
What about everyone else? Sally asked.
Theyre all in the planning room and in position. Ok, now all we have to do is get you the necessary pouches and then were good to go. Sonic said.
What would those be? Sally asked.
First aid kits, food and the like. He replied. Come on, Ill outfit ya.
Sally followed Sonic out the door and to the armoury. Sonic swiped his card through the reader and entered, with Sally in tow. Walking over to a cabinet, Sonic opened it and took out a pouch with a white circle and a red cross stamped on the flap. Sally recognized it as a medikit.
Youll be needing that. Who knows what trouble we might run into. Im bringing one as well, just in case. Sonic said as he closed up the cabinet. He then lead Sally over to what looked like a box on the wall with a glass front. It was filled with tubes that each housed different colours of liquid as well as silver packets. Sonic opened up the box and grabbed a hand full of the tubes.
Sonic opened up a pouch and started to place the tubes inside.
What are those thing? Sally asked.
These are drinks. Sonic said, turning and holding up one of the tubes.
Sonic noticed Sallys puzzled expression and offered an explanation.
When Turtleguy was here, he explained that we may be away from the base for long period or in hostile territory, these little sachets will help us survive. These, as well as the food in there, are vital to any long mission. Apparently its an Overlander idea.
Well, I have to say its a good idea.
Yeah, for an Overlander. Sonic said.
How can you tell whats in them?
They have it printed on the side here. Sonic said as he turned the tube to Sally, pointing out the printed inscription on the side.
Is it the same for the food?
Yup. Sonic said as he piled in a few silver packets. All the foods been freeze dried to make them last longer. All we need to do is add a bit of water and theyre ready to eat. Sorry its not much.
Hey, thats alright Blue. As long as its something to eat, thats all that matters. Sally told him.
After Sonic had loaded a pouch full of food and drink rations, he affixed it to the waistband of Sallys side pack. As Sonic stood up Sally felt ready.
Ok. Were all ready Blue. Lets go.
Not yet. Sal, you had better take your gun. Who knows what we might run into out there.
Sally didnt like the idea of carrying around a loaded weapon, but she knew Sonic was right. Going to her locker, she opened it and found her Magnum sitting in the rack where she left it. As she took it out and closed her locker, Sonic handed her some bullets in a speed loader. Sally took them and placed them in a pouch on one of the side packs straps. Sally was just wondering how to carry her firearm when Sonic held out a folded piece of leather and plastic to her.
Thread this on the waist band, its a holster for your gun.
Sally threaded the holster onto her belt and slid the Magnum home. It felt as though Sally had just added yet another weight to her soul.
Ok, all I need to do is grab a few papers and well be ready to go. Sally said as she disappeared out the door, making her way back to the operations room. Rifling through the papers on the table she picked up the photo of the master emerald, the map, as well as a couple of papers on what bots Eggman had in his small army as well as 3 reports of the ruins. Folding them up, she placed them on an inside pocket and turned toward the door to see Sonic leaning on the door frame.
Ready? He asked.
Ready. Sally confirmed.
With that, Sonic scooped Sally up and hurtled out of the base. As they raced along, Sally consulted the map.
According to this, if we turn off at the valley coming up, then we can cut through the plains to the canyons. Sally reported,
Ok, lets go. Sonic answered in reply, as he turned off the road and sped across the open plains for the mountains beyond.
Cool Dan! Hey, also, check out the site I made! The link is in your request topic.
Well, it's been a while. Now that I have got that trojan horse removed, I can start resubmitting my fic. Here we are and sorry to keep you waiting.
Chapter Nine Shadows
As they crossed the plains, Sally wondered why Eggman didnt move his troops over the plains. Maybe Eggman missed it she thought. As they raced over the plains, Sally pulled out the map from her inside pocket and unfolded it to the open plains. Sonic scanned the horizon for any trouble as he zoomed along. The wind rustled the map, making it hard for Sally to read it.
According to the map, the entrance to the canyon is about 2 miles away. Sally told Sonic.
Ok Sal, Hold on, Im throwing it into high.
Tucking the map away back into her pocket, Sally wrapped her arms around Sonics neck as he poured on the speed. The trees and bushes whizzed by as Sonic sped on by. It was then Sally saw something disappear over a hill. Probably just a rabbit she thought. Sonic had seen it too. As they neared the hill, Sonic slowed down. He was suspious of this strange shape.
Why are you slowing down Blue? Sally asked.
I dont like the looks of that shape just now.
Its probably just a rabbit.
Im not so sure Sal. It looked a little to blocky to be a rabbit. Sonic replied.
Sonic had slowed to a light run as they approached the hill. As they neared the top, Sonic stopped and put Sally down.
Lay prone. He told her.
They both crawled to the crest of the hill. As they snuck up behind a large stone for cover, Sonic peeked over the top and espied two black bots with red visors. At first Sonic thought them Swatbots but these robots seemed to be fitted with extra stuff that Sonic hadnt seen on any other Swatbots.
What are those? Sally asked as she peeked round the other side.
I have no idea, but they seem to have set a trap for us, and I can give you two guesses as to who set it. Sonic replied.
The two bots had set up a little makeshift tent with cameo netting with a small pile of rocks in front of it. They were both armed with rifles as well as cross bandoliers with a few grenades, a pistol and extra clips.
Wait here Sal. With that Sonic crawled round the rock.
Sally watched from the safety of the rock as Sonic made his way to a bush behind the bots. Sonic gave her the ok sign and winked at her. Sally smiled back and gave him the thumbs up. Sonic then reached through the bush and put his hand into a box. When he with drew it, he quickly ran in front of the bots.
Sal, duck! He yelled. Sally did as she was told and covered her head. There was an almighty bang, then dirt and rocks rained down. As sally peeked over the top of the rock, she could see a small crater were the two bots had been. Around it were a few metal scraps and loose pieces of circuitry.
Sally looked over her shoulder to se Sonic standing over her. He helped her to his feet.
What was that? Sally asked.
Those dumbots left a box of grenades open. I pulled the pin from one and let it do the rest of the work. Sonic said as he playfully tossed the pin into the air, catching it in back in his hand.
Sonic, never do that again, please. Sally pleaded as she hugged him.
Sorry Sal. I just saw the opportunity and it was too good to pass up. I promise to never do anything like that again. He replied as he hugged her.
Well, lets get going, we can salvage what stuff we can on the way back. Sally said.
Hold on. Ill just put this here, and we can easily find it again. He said as he placed a beacon amongst the smouldering ruins. Ok lets juice. He said as he scooped up Sally and sped off. They crossed the remainder of the plains in silence. Each wondered how Eggman knew to place those bots there and what they were. They had never seen bots like them before. If they were a new make then they would have to keep a heads up.
I see the canyon, Sal. Sonic said.
Sally pulled out the map.
Ok, when we enter take a left then follow the valley to the end. Sally said at last.
Gotcha Sal. Hold on tight. Sonic said as they entered the valley.
Sonic tore along the valley, kicking up a large cloud of dust behind him. They expected an assault from some of Eggmans bots but nothing amiss happened. Sonic started to relax when he heard an explosion overhead. Looking up he saw a large boulder cascading down the mountainside.
SONIC!! Sally yelled as she watched the large rocky mass bear down on them. Sonic poured on the speed and nipped under the boulder just as it crashed to the valley floor. Sally raised her head from Sonics shoulder. Looking over his shoulder, she could see the large piece of granite that almost crushed them. Turning back to look at Sonic, she could see that sweat was pouring down his face as he concentrated on keeping a high speed. Sally reached into her pocket and withdrew a handkerchief. She mopped Sonics brow before replacing it in her pocket.
Who set that off? Sally asked Sonic.
I have no idea Sal. Best we get out of this canyon as soon as-
Sonic was cut off mid-sentence when the ground erupted in an explosion close to them. Looking up on the canyon walls, Sonic and Sally could see the same black bots hurling down grenades at them. The ground exploded all around them as one by one, the grenades blew up. Sonic poured on the speed, trying to evade the deadly rain of grenades. Soon the explosions stopped and sally looked over Sonics shoulder to see the last of the black bots, disappearing into the distance.
That was close. Sally said, relieved.
Yeah, you ok Sal? Sonic asked.
Yeah, Im a bit shaken thats all.
As long as your not hurt. Sonic replied.
Just then came a whoosh followed by an explosion close by. Sonic staggered as the impact wave hit him. Sonic glanced over his shoulder and could make out two black bots, one on each side of the canyon, firing at them. They each held a strange looking gun. Sonic knew from Turtle Guys lectures what they were.
What are they holding? Sally asked as she too espied the robots.
Grenade launchers. Hold on, Sal. Sonic said as he poured on even more speed, a grenade exploding where they had been only moments before.
Grenade launchers? Sally asked, somewhat confused.
Things that chuck grenades. Explode on impact, very dangerous. Sonic quickly briefed. Hold onto me Sal, were going up the walls. Sonic announced as he pulled hard to one side, just as another grenade exploded on the opposite side. The Sonic changed walls then back again, leaving grenades harmlessly exploding on the walls. Sally was showered with rocks and dust as her ears were assaulted with explosions. Soon the explosions stopped and Sonic slowed down.
You ok Sal? Sonic asked.
Yeah, apart from my ears ringing and being covered in dust, Im fine. Sally answered.
Pop your ears and that should stop the ringing. Sonic replied.
Sally grabbed her nose and popped her ears. Her ears stopped ringing.
Thanks Blue.
No probs Sal. As long as your ok, thats all that matters.
That was too close for comfort. How did those bots know when to strike? Sally asked as she looked over Sonics shoulder.
Seems Eggman planned this out before hand. I wouldnt be surprised if he had something else waiting for us. Sonic said.
Sally pulled out the map from her inside pocket and checked it once again.
The ruins are just around the next bend.
Lets hope that Eggman Isnt around the next bend as well. Sonic said as they bore down on their target.
As they rounded the corner they found the ruins standing in front of them. Slowing down, Sonic placed Sally down as she stared at the tomb before them. The areas was deserted. It looked like the others had got a message about Eggman approaching.
Well, lets get that Master Emerald before Eggman shows up. Sally said as she turned to Sonic.
Well, it's been a long while what with my computer crashing and me having to recover the whole system but everything is back to normal. So heres the long over due chapter 10.
Shadows Chapter 10
As Sally turned she noticed the large gash on Sonics thigh.
Sonic, your thigh. Sally said, pointing to it.
Huh? Sonic looked down. Oh its only a small scratch. See it doesnt hurt. He said and hopped on his injured leg. Doing so, he winced in pain and steadied himself on a nearby rock as his leg collapsed under him.
Sit down Blue, your not going anywhere with you leg like that. Sally said as she took a small first aid kit out of her pocket. Sally always carried one in case of emergencies.
How did this happen? Sally asked.
Well, you know that grenade that exploded close-by? Well, it caught my leg.
And you ran all the way here with that wound? Sally said as she opened up the small green bag.
Sonic smiled rather sheepishly.
Sally let out a sigh as she looked at Sonic with a melancholy look on her face. Sally poured out a some of the disinfectant on the gauze.
Steady yourself Blue. This may sting a little. Sally said.
Sonic braced himself. Sally applied the gauze to Sonics blood and dirt stained leg. There was a sharp intake of air as Sonic felt the sting.
Sorry Blue, Ill try to be as quick as I can.
Sally quickly cleaned up the dirt and blood that seeped from the open wound on Sonics thigh.
There, now all I need to do is bind it and youll be ready. Sally spoke as she rummaged in her green bag for a bandage.
Thanks Sal. I dont know what I would do without you. Sonic said as Sally wound the bandage around his thigh.
Sally smiled up at him.
There that should do it. Sally said as she finished off the bandage with a couple of butterfly sutures. Sonic stood up and tested his leg. He felt it strain against the tight bandage, but other then that, his leg felt fine.
Hows that? Sally asked.
Yeah, thats much better, thanks Sal. Sonic said as they started toward the ruin. All around the site, Sonic and Sally noticed rock drills, ramshackle tables and various other pieces of mining and archaeology related items. All of them seemed to have been dropped as if the workers here had suddenly disappeared. Finding this also strange, the pair headed inside the ruins. The long corridor was lit with fluorescent tubes that were connected to a generator that buzzed near the entrance. As they entered, they could make out scaffolding that had been used to excavate the writings on the walls. As they proceeded, Sally got the feeling that they were being followed. She looked over her shoulder numerous times, but saw only shadows. Soon they entered a large vaulted hall, pillars adorned with carvings sat in the four corners, complete with lights, scaffolding and discarded tools. Then they heard a thud. Swivelling round, they were confronted by a pair of mean looking beavers. Each wore a yellow hard hat, vest tops, baggy trousers and heavily stained work boots. One hefted a sledge hammer while the other spun a pickaxe in its paws. Then there were more footsteps as two more workman emerged from the shadows. Dressed the same but one had a rock drill, while the other wielded another pickaxe. They advanced rather menacingly, as Sonic stepped forward.
Yo guys. Whats shaken? Look were her to look for this thing you found. So if you get your boss well straighten this all out.
The workman said nothing as they advanced.
Wait you fools, wait. A voice called followed by hurried footsteps.
A bespectacled Hyena entered. He wore suit trousers with a white T-shirt under a dusty lab coat.
What are you fools doing?
Me an the boys stopped some of Eggmans spies. One of the beavers announced proudly. The hyena stood aghast.
Do these look like Eggman spies? Are your sure there even Eggmans spies?
Well, wes was gonna get round at that. The beaver spoke, clearly showing lack of logic.
Well, let me tell you who you were about to bury that pick axe into. This is the crown Princess Alicia Acorn and the Freedom Fighter hero who killed Robotnik, Sonic the Hedgehog. The hyena spluttered.
Oh sorry boss. Me an the boys aint never seen thems before.
Look, just go back to the entrance and stop Eggmans robots. Surely you know what they look like. The hyena said as the workman left.
Sonic and Sally watched them leave.
Oh those people are impossible. The hyena said.
Youre the one who sent the message to us? Sally asked.
Yes, Professor Hinkle. Lead archaeologist on this expedition.
Ahh, so you found out about this super emerald thing? Sonic asked.
Master Emerald. Hinkle corrected Sonic. And I naturally was the first to step into the chamber. Hinkle said with a certain self importance.
Sonic and Sally looked at each other. They didnt believe a word of it.
Come, let me show you. Hinkle said as he lead them down the tunnel toward the Master Emerald chamber.
Why was it deserted outside? Sally asked.
When we got word of Eggman coming here we all holed up inside the ruin. Hinkle said as he lead them through a room packed with archaeologists pouring over old relics and computer data. They stopped before a pair of large carved doors.
Beyond these doors lie the Master Emerald. Hinkle announced proudly.
Both Sonic and Sally shook with excitement. This was the first time they had beaten Eggman too something. Hinkle pushed the doors open to revel a high vaulted chamber and inside, surrounded by a few archaeologists as well as various computers and implements sat a huge green emerald, perfectly cut.
Wow, I have never seen an emerald so big before. Sonic exhaled.
Beautiful isnt it? This is the only one of its kind. We believe that this massive artefact was crafted by Overlanders from centuries ago to keep the Chaos Emeralds in check. But thats only legend, from what weve deciphered from the glyphs on the wall. Hinkle announced, sweeping an arm across a wall, where a pair of archaeologists were busy writing down the Glyphs into note pads for later analysis.
What about Eggman? Have you got any word where he is? He wont pass this up. Sally said.
No, we got no news of any-
EGGMAN!!! came the panicked voice followed by an explosion that threw rocks and dust into the chamber. As the dust settled, Swatbots poured into the chamber behind them. Workman hit the bots with their pickaxes and sledge hammers, picking up the guns to fire at other Swatbots. Hinkle ran into the chamber, calling to Sonic and Sally to protect the Master Emerald. Soon a lone figure was seen, silhouetted against the dust cloud. Sally gasped as the figure stepped forth, malice lined in his eyes. Sonic stepped in front of Sally to protect her. Sonic gritted his teeth. Of course he would be here, it would only be natural.
Ok heres the next chapter. Hope you enjoy it.
Shadows Chapter Eleven
The figure walked between the carnage of dead workman and destroyed Swatbots, purposely making his way to master Emerald.
Shadow. Sonic uttered.
Shadow sneered as he walked slowly through the battle toward them.
Wait here Sal. Sonic said as he turned to Sally and sped toward the encouraging enemy.
Sonic aimed a punch for Shadows chest. Sonics punch hit something but it wasnt Shadows chest, his hand had been caught In Shadows. Sonic looked dumbfounded for a moment before he smirked and brought his knee up in to Shadows groin. Once again Sonic felt his knee hit a barricade. Looking down he saw Shadows other hand stopping Sonics knee mere inches from his groin. Sonic looked up in surprise and horror as he realised that Shadow was more then he seemed. Smiling at Sonics fear he started to crush Sonics fist. Sonic gritted his teeth, trying to withstand the force acting on his fist, but soon he felt his sturdy fist give way as his hand was crushed. Shadow grinned even wider as Sonic let out a cry of pain and sank to his knees. Shadow let go of his hand as Sonic held his wrist, trying to get feeling back into his hand. Shadows grin faded and turned to one of anger as he grabbed Sonic by the scruff of his neck and threw him back into the Master Emerald chamber where he landed on a table, scattering computers and finds all over. Sonic coughed as he struggled to regain his breath.
Sonic! Sally yelled.
Sally was next to Sonic in a heartbeat, checking him over to see if he was badly hurt. Sonic moaned lightly through gritted teeth. Shadow once again advanced on them both, sneering evilly.
Sonic, are you alright. Sally asked.
Sal, get out of here. Hes too powerful. Sonic moaned.
No, Im not leaving you.
Shadow advanced through the chamber door.
Blue, stand up.
Sal, go. If you dont hell kill us both.
Listen to me Blue. I lost you before, Im not losing you again. Sally sobbed.
Shadow was now very close.
Go, now. Sonic called as he pushed Sally away as Shadow stepped into the chamber.
Hm. Shadow uttered as he looked down on Sonic.
Grabbing him by the neck again, he lifted Sonic bodily up into the air.
Suffer. Shadow uttered in his gravely voice, as he started to squeeze Sonics neck.
Sally saw Sonic struggle as Shadow slowly throttled him. Thinking quickly, she picked up a shovel and swung it at Shadows head. There was a loud clang as the metal shovel head struck Shadows skull and bounce off, much to Sallys surprise. As she watched, Shadows shoulders hunched up and he turned a hate filled gaze over his shoulder at her. Sally dropped the shovel and backed off. Dropping Sonic he turned, all his attention focused on her. Sonic gasped and wheezed as he tried to breathe again.
Sal.RUN! Sonic gasped.
The effect was almost immediate. Sally turned and started up a pair of stone steps that wound their way up around the outside of the chamber. Sally mounted the stairs two at a time in an attempt to escape a furious Shadow. Sally quickly cast a glance over her shoulder to see Shadow waiting at the bottom of the stairs still, glaring up at her. Sally began to wonder what Shadow was doing when she noticed he was hovering a few scant inches from the floor. Then he shot for the stairs, skating up them as if they werent there. Sally turned and continued her frantic run up the stairs. Sonic watched as Sally wound her way up the ancient stairs with Shadow in hot pursuit. Looking off to one side he saw an industrial laser. Used no doubt to free the Master Emerald from its moorings. Looking back up again, Sonic rolled onto his front and crawled on all fours to the laser.
Ill save you Sal. he muttered as he hauled himself onto the control panel.
Sally reached top and, panting, looked back down. Shadow was quickly bearing down on her. Turning and running Sally stopped short. Where once shouldve been a walkway, was a dizzying drop down to the Master Emerald. Turning back to look for another way to go, she found Shadow staring right back at her. He took one step and it echoed on the old stone walkway. The footstep sounded full of dread as he took another one. Those footsteps filled Sallys world as she backed toward the edge of the walkway. Looking behind her, Sally saw she was on the very edge. Sonic meanwhile was hurriedly altering the laser. Checking a rough sighting he found the angle he wanted and set the laser. A timer started to indicate when it would fire. With that all set, Sonic set off up the stairs. Shadow just stood there, staring Sally down. Looking either side she saw there was no way past the black hedgehog. Then before she knew what was happening, Shadow skated toward her with big loping strides. She was frozen to the spot as he grabbed her lower jaw in his hand and pulled her to the floor.
That wasnt very friendly Princess. Shadow spat through clenched teeth.
Sally struggled trying to force his hand off but his vicelike grip kept her in place. He looked at her for a moment before he threw her to the floor. Getting to her knees and grasping her jaw she locked eyes with Shadow, then bolted for his side to get away. Shadow re4acted almost instantly, shooting out a hand to stop the princess as she passed him by. His hand found her inside pocket of her waist coat and he tightened his grip. Sally, unaware that Shadow had grabbed her, found herself spun round as Shadow pulled her back. There was a rip as her pocket tore and the reports, map and various photos that she had inside spilled out. This threw her off balance and she landed neatly on her behind. Sally went to stand again when Shadow placed a hand on her neck and forced her back down. Looking off to one side, he spotted the clutter of papers as well as a few photos of Sally and Sonic. Sally struggled against Shadows grasp, but he held her in place as he bent down and picked up a photo that had grabbed his attention. It showed Sally and Sonic, celebrating Sonics birthday. It looked as if the picture had been taken unawares as they were wrapped in each others arms, enjoying a kiss. Shadow passed his glance to Sally back to the picture. Then he looked at her with an evil smile as a thought crossed his mind. This girl might prove useful after all he thought. Sonic staggered up the stairs, all the while keeping his eyes fixed on Sally and Shadow up above him. He was travelling at only half his speed but even Sonic knew he wouldnt get up the top before the laser fired. Shadow lifted Sally off her feet and held her over the edge of the walkway.
Okay Princess. Now were gonna play a little game. Tell me where the base is and I wont drop you. Shadow said.
What makes you think Ill tell. Sally growled back.
Im sure your boyfriend doesnt want to be scraping you off the Master Emerald now. Shadow replied.
You wont drop me. If you do, then youll never know where the base is. Sally retorted.
Seeing Sally held over the edge, Sonic quickly reached into his backpack and withdrew a Grappling iron attached to a length of rope and a launcher.
Hold on Sal. Ill be right there. Sonic muttered as he assembled the device.
Well, if the threat of death wont loosen those lips of yours maybe this will.
Upon saying this, Shadow drew Sally in close and placed her lips on his. Sally struggled against Shadow, wondering what he was doing. Sonic glanced up and, upon seeing what Shadow was doing, felt a wave of heat well up inside him. His grip tightened on the launcher causing it to creak a little as he crushed it.
There, how was that? Shadow asked.
What was that for? Sally questioned back.
Whats wrong, I thought you wouldve liked it. After all I am made from Sonics DNA, so kissing me would be like kissing him, whats the difference? Shadow leered.
Sally felt repulsed at what Shadow had just done. She also wondered what Sonic would say if he saw what happened.
Now Princess, tell me where the base is.
Sonic quickly assembled the launcher, his blood boiling all the while. He loaded the launcher and cast his eyes upward once again to see Sally be swung out over the side once again. Aiming the grappling hook Sonic fired it into a niche high on the ceiling. Seeing something shoot past, Shadow looked down and saw Sonic, much to his surprise. Pulling the trigger, Sonic shot off the stairs and grabbed Sally as he passed. And not a moment too soon, for the laser fired, severing the ledge and sent Shadow earthward. Landing on the stairs opposite, Sally hugged Sonic, [pleased to be rescued and also out of fear. Sonic watched as Shadow landed headfirst on the Master Emerald, bounce off and land on the laser. That should deal with him, Sonic thought. But to his horror he watched as Shadow picked himself up, pressing the fire button on the laser as he did so. Shadow glanced over to the door and cast one last look up at Both Sonic and Sally before he ran out of the chamber, wiping his brow as he went.
Sal, you ok? Sonic asked.
Yeah, thanks Blue. Sally replied rather shakily.
Picking her up Sonic got down the stairs as quick as he could.
OK, your safe Sal. He didnt hurt you at all did he? Sonic asked.
No but he did ummits nothing. Sally spoke.
Dont worry. I saw what he did and hes not getting away with it. He thinks he can have his way with my Sal, hes got another thing coming.
No sooner had Sonic finished speaking then he heard a low whine. Turning to the laser, they both saw it fire directly at the Master Emerald. The emerald glowed a bright green as it filled on energy.
Sal get down! Sonic yelled as he threw himself and Sally to the floor to protect her.
The emerald exploded with an almighty bang, sending shards out every which way.
Sonic, Sally, SONIC, SALLY! Hinkles voice rang loud as the dust settled. Sonic lifted his head and looked around. It seemed safe. Helping Sally to her feet they both looked round at what once had been the Master Emerald. Only a couple of shards remained. Hinkle entered the chamber. The first thing he noticed was the Master Emerald was gone. Sonic explained to the professor how the emerald over loaded on energy from the laser and exploded.
Those idiots. I told them to move that laser as this would happen. But your not hurt are you? Hinkle asked.
No were fine. Hows everyone else? Sonic asked.
We have a few casualties, some fatal unfortunately, but weve driven Eggman away. For the time being at least. Hinkle spoke. Who was that black hedgehog?
Thats Shadow, a clone of me. Heaven knows how Eggman got my blood though. Sonic said.
I think we had better get back to base and tell the others what happened. Will you be ok here? Sally asked.
Well be fine. We have people helping out the injured. Since the Master Emerald exploded, Its likely to be scattered over a wide area. Ill send out teams to see if they can find any shards. If we find any, well send them to you. Hinkle spoke.
OK, thanks Doc. Cmon Sal, we gotta get back. Scooping Sally up in his arms, Sonic shot out the ruins.
Well heres the next chapter. Short but it's needed to set the scene for the rest of the story. Hope you enjoy this one.
Chapter 12 Shadows
Arriving back at the base, Sonic and Sally called an emergency meeting. Soon everyone was assembled. They explained what had happened.
Oh this is terrible. No its going to make it easier for Eggman to find the Master Emerald. Rotor said.
Not ifin we gets them thar shards first. Bunnie spoke.
But where do we start looking? Tails asked.
I want teams to search between here and Sandopolsis in weekly shifts. Get the word out to the other factions as well. We need to gather as many shards as we can. Sally ordered.
Im on it. Rotor spoke up and disappeared out the door.
Wouldnt it be easier to let Eggman get all the shards then we could steal them back? Antoine suggested as he lent by the door.
We cant take that risk, if Eggman gathers all the emerald shards then who knows what hell do. Sally replied. Its better if we hunt for the shards and prevent Eggman from getting them.
Humph. Antoine exclaimed as he left the operations room.
Sally know that something was up with Antoine. She couldnt quite place it, but he didnt seem to be the same Antoine she knew before the war. Sally rubbed her left forearm. She didnt know why it felt odd. Maybe because of all the stress she was under she guessed. Sonic noticed as well and noted that her forearm seemed slightly swollen. Sonic made a mental note to keep an eye on her for the rest of the day. The afternoon passed without incident, Rotor and Bunnie had gone out foraging for Emerald pieces and there were no reports of Eggman for Sally to worry about. Sally entered her room, glad that everything was running so smoothly. She could finally get a peaceful night. She hung up her waistcoat, pulled off her boots and flopped back on her bed, closing her eyes as she felt the softness of the quilt. But her forearm now felt weird. A mosquito mustve bitten her when she was out in the desert she thought. Opening her eyes she cast a look at her arm and was shocked by what she saw. An outline of something had appeared under her skin. Sitting up and holding her arm, she wondered what it could be. Running her fingers over it, she felt a solid lump. She tried to keep herself composed but she felt lost and bewildered. Was this something Shadow had done or was it something afterwards? Her thoughts immediately turned to Sonic. She had to get him. So, quickly wrapping her arm in a towel from her bathroom, she made her way to Sonics quarters. She knocked on the door, which was promptly opened but Sonic himself.
Hey Sal. whats wrong? Sonic asked.
Sonic, I need to talk to you. Its important.
Yeah sure, come on in Sal. Sonic said as he stood to one side.
As Sally entered she stood in the centre of the room and waited for Sonic.
Sonic noticed now that Sally wasnt wearing her waistcoat or boots. Whatever it was it must be urgent.
Sal, whats wrong? Sonic asked.
In reply, Sally took off the towel to revel the mark to Sonic.
Whats that? Sonic asked, open mouthed.
II dont know. I.I think Shadow mightve done it.
Sonic ran his fingers gently over the mark and felt a solid under her skin.
I dont think Shadow did this. Were you bitten by a mosquito at all? He asked.
No. I dont think so. I was just laying on my bed and there it was.
Sitting on his bed to get a better look at the lump, Sonic could see that Sally was anxious about it. He would be too if a mystery lump appeared on his arm. Sonic looked back up at her. She had a worried look on her face. Running his hands up her arm and around her shoulders, he pulled her too him. Sally wrapped her arms around Sonic making sure not to put pressure on the lump. Sally couldnt help herself as she finally gave in to her fear and cried on his shoulder. Sonic held Sally in a warm loving hug.
There, there. Come now Sal. Dont cry, its alright, your with me now.
Sally sniffed as she heard his words.
What am I going to do? Sally asked Sonic through her tears.
You mean what are WE going to do. Your not on your own on this Sal, Im here with you. Im always here with you, and were going to sort this problem out together. You can spend the night here if you want Sal. Sonic told her.
Thanks Blue. Sally sobbed.
Sonic continued to cradle Sally.
We saw through the time you were robotized and were gonna see this through as well. So dont you worry about anything at all. Ill take care of it all.
Sally clutched at Sonics quills as he spoke. A feeling of uselessness overcame her. She always had to rely on Sonic. Why? She quietly cursed herself as she held onto the blue blur. Sonic gently stroked her auburn hair. Sonic was busy thinking of what to do to help out his girl, when he hit on the answer.
Sal? I know what to do. he spoke softly.
You do? Sally asked From Sonics shoulder.
Yeah, first thing tomorrow morning, well go down to the medical bay and use that new X-ray that the southern FF installed while they were here last. Ill take an X-ray of your arm and see whats in there. Then well go on from there. Sonic told her.
Alright if you say so Blue. Sally sobbed.
Why dont you spend the night here with me? Youve had a nasty shock.
Thanks Sonic. Sally said as she smiled through her tears.
Sonic brought her closer, sliding one arm around her waist and running the other through her hair, as he lent back his head resting on the soft pillow. As they lay down, Sally got comfortable on Sonics chest, the thudding of his heart relaxed her. Sonic gently pulled the blanket over himself and Sally. Lying here with Sonic, Sally felt safe.
Try to get some sleep Sal. Weve got a big day ahead of us. Sonic whispered, as he reached up to turn off his bedside light. As the light was flicked off and it plunged the room into darkness once again, Sally felt Sonics arm once more lightly ruffle her hair. She was safe, and with the person she loved. Nothing else mattered. Sonic would make sure she was safe, she knew it. Smiling to herself, thanking how lucky she was, she quietly drifted off to sleep in Sonics arms.
Alright, heres the next chapter.
Chapter thirteen Shadows
Sally woke the next morning to the suns glare streaming in through the window of Sonics bedroom. Yawning, she rubbed her eyes and woke up to the world around her. She glanced lazily down at her arm and at once saw something that made her wide awake. Trembling she gently shook Sonic. Sonic mumbled, and pulled Sally a little closer. Sally shook him harder and Sonics eyes parted.
Hey morn-. Sonic was cut short when he saw the distress that Sally was in. Hey Sal, whats wrong? Sonic asked, now fully awake.
Sonic, My arm, its. Sally stumbled over here words as she brought her arm up to Sonics line of vision. The lump on Sallys was now more pronounced and it had a slight green hue to it.
We had better get you to the Med bay now. Sonic announced as he threw back the duvet. Not even bothering to get his gloves and shoes on, Sonic carried Sal to the Medical centre not too far from his room.
We need to find out what that thing is in your arm Sal. Sonic said as he placed Sally in a whitewashed room, a large piece of machinery stood in the centre. Gently placing sally on a small chair in front of the imposing contraption, Sally felt a little apprehensive.
Will this hurt? Sally asked.
No Sal, its completely painless. Plus itll be over before you know it. Sonic told her as he set her arm under a large lens. Retreating to a large screen, Sonic pressed a few buttons as was outlined in the sticky notes that had been left as instructions. Sonic then returned.
Was that it? Sally asked.
Yup, thats all Sal. Sonic replied.
He lead Sally over to a small slot. The images came sliding out. All Sally could see were white and black blobs. That was until Sonic turned on a light on a small wall box that had a surprisingly bright light. Placing the X-ray on some clips at the top, they both examined it.
See that big thick white mass? Thats the thing thats in your arm. Sonic told her.
What is it? Sally asked.
I have no idea Sal. But wait, it might be.
Taking her arm gently, Sonic looked at the X-ray to her arm and back again.
Blue?
Sonic didnt answer.
Blue, what is it?
It cant be. But how? Sonic muttered.
Blue, whats going on? Sally asked, feeling a little scared.
Im afraid I dont know Sal.
Sally felt at a loss.
We could always try the eastern Freedom Fighters. They have good doctors there. They might be able to figure out what this is. Sonic told her as he pulled down the X-ray and turned off the light on the wall box, before putting the X-ray into a large brown envelope.
Will they know? Sally asked.
They must do. The eastern FF have the best doctors in Mobius. Sonic said.
Picking Sally up, Sonic sped out the base, heading for the larger Eastern Freedom fighter base. As they sped over the plains, they didnt notice a camera bot hidden among the foliage of an oak. As Sonic covered the long distance with relative ease he got a niggling feeling that something was wrong as the quills on the back of his neck would stand up. Looking back over his shoulder, he saw nothing.
Whats up Blue? Sally asked.
Nothing Sal. I just get the feeling that were being followed. Its nothing. My minds preoccupied and its playing tricks on me.
Sonic continued to speed over the plains, unawares of the cambot hovering right above them, relaying their every movement to a pair of eager eyes. The dew on the grass glistened as the hedgehog dashed past run past, blotting out the sun as he passed. As they approached a stream, Sonic decided to stop and see hoe Sallys arm was doing. Also to have a bit of time together.
Whyve you stopped Blue? Sally asked.
I thought this might be a good place to check your arm. Sonic replied as he put her down. Sally looked at the scenery. The river flowed under the bridge and stretched off in to the Great Forest. Behind them a waterfall was barely in the distance as the water cascaded down from the mountains. Sonic took her right arm and gently rubbed his fingers over the lump. Sally felt her skin tingle as Sonic passed his gloved paw over it. Sally could see by the way Sonic looked at the lump that he was concerned.
Well, nothing seems to have changed, thankfully. Sonic reported.
Thats a relief. Sally replied as she lent on the handrail of the bridge. She stared into the water, watching the silverback fish digging up the riverbed for worms and snails. Sonic stepped up behind her and placed his arms around her waist. Sally let out a small laugh and blushed slightly as Sonic hugged her and put his head on her shoulder. Sonic and Sally lent forward slightly as they hugged.
Stream seems nice this year. Sonic commented.
Yeah, I guess the snow melted early this year.
What says after this is all done we have a picnic by the Azure lake?
Yeah, and I can teach you to swim. Sally added.
Err, how about we sit and watch the sunset. I heard that the Azure Lake got its name for a good reason.
Hmm, Sounds like your afraid.
ImIm not. Sonic protested.
Sally turned round and saw a very red faced Sonic looking back.
Come on Blue. Itll be fun. Just you and me.
And all the slimy things that live in the water.
Oh come on. Promise me, please? Sally asked.
Alright. I promise. Sal.
Now Im going to hold you to your promise Sonic hedgehog.
I know you will Sal. You always do.
They both laughed as Sally turned back to the handrail, with Sonic resting his head next to hers.
Whats going to happen to me Blue? Sally asked.
Sonic was a little confused. What do you mean Sal?
I mean will it change me, whatever this is thats in my arm.
No it wont and I wont let it happen. Sonic replied as he hugged her closer.
Sally lowered her head and stared forlornly into the water. Sonic looked down as well at their reflections and gave a little smile. Sally couldnt help but smile as well. As she looked at Sonics reflection, she saw his face suddenly harden.
Sonic, whats-
Shh, dont look up Sal. I can see a cam bot above us. I can see its reflections in the water so dont look. Just act naturally.
OK sure. Sally replied and turned her attention toward the reflection again.
Sonic watched as the bot hovered in mid air, just over their heads. Apparently, Eggman had forgotten about the reflection in the water or had betted on Sonic and Sally not seeing it. Sonic had to lure the thing nearer or else he wouldnt be able to dismantle it. Sonic then had an idea.
Here Sal, you still got that plan of Robotropilis? Sonic asked. Play along. he whispered in Sallys ear.
Huh? Oh yeah, sure. Sally replied.
Sally reached inside an outside pocket and brought out an old map of Mobius they were using to find the eastern FF base. Releasing Sallys waist Sonic took the map and spread it in the bridge, all the while keeping an eye on the cam bots reflection as he knelt down. Sure enough, the cam bot sunk a little lower. Sonic turned and jumped toward the bot. Grabbing it firmly in his gloved paws he landed back on the bridge.
Nice try Eggman. But you need something better to get THIS hedgehog. He said as he placed the cam bot on the floor and, getting Sally to firmly hold it in both hands, stamped on the lens. There was the sound of crunching glass and followed by more crunching as Sonic ground the cam bot and its shattered lens under his trainer. Sonic gritted his teeth as he put all his weight on the unfortunate machine. When he was satisfied with his work Sonic removed his shoe.
OK Sal, let it go.
Sally did as she was told and the cam bot hovered up with awkwardly as it flew home.
Hopefully we wont get anymore interruptions. Sonic said as he turned to Sally. Ok, now to get you to a doctor.
Scooping Sally up Sonic sped off in the direction of the Eastern Freedom Fighter base.
Heres the next bit
Chapter Fourteen Shadows
They reached the Eastern FF base in no time at all. A couple of guards saw them approach and they ducked back inside to warn the others. Sonic and Sally arrived at the well defended base. Putting Sally down, they both made their way to the large metal doors that served as the bases main entrance. Sally let Sonic lead her, all the while she looked at the lump on her arm. Sonic walked up to the door and looked up at the security camera as it zoomed in and locked on them.
Hey guys, open up. We need your help its urgent. Sonic said as he looked up into the unblinking eye of the camera.
Whats the emergency? asked the gate guard through a speaker, mounted on the wall to the left of the door.
Hey look open up, we need to get in.
If you dont have clearance then you arent allowed in.
Look, Im Sonic, Sonic the Hedgehog and this is the crown princess of the House of Acorn. We need to get in. Sonic told the camera.
There was a silence as inaudible voices were heard over the mike.
Go clean the tables or something. Yes hello, whos there? Came a different voice.
Its me Sonic the Hedgehog and Sally Acorn. Sonic replied, little irritated.
OK hold on, Ill open the doors for you.
The huge double metal doors opened wide, as a cat with light orange fur and tawny stripes greeted them. She also wore a pair of black combat boots, a pair of creased cargo trousers and a purple vest top that was too tight for her
Sorry about that. We just got a lot of new sign ons and they dont know everyone yet. My names Kali the Kat. Whats the problem?
Sallys got something in here arm, we dont have anyone that can tell us what it is and we thought you might have someone that will know. Sonic explained.
Ok, follow me. Kali said as she lead the way into the base.
After passing through the cramped corridors, they came to a room with the familiar red cross on it. Inside Sonic and Sally met a blue two tailed fox, wearing a pink tank top and blue jeans, quite a difference from there guide.
Here you go Jay, Ill leave this to you. I need to get back to my post. With that, Kali left.
So youre the great Sonic the hedgehog and Sally acorn. Im Jay Foxfire, Mission co-ordinator and emergency orderly. What seems to be the trouble.
Sallys got something in her arm. We have no idea what it is, we thought maybe you could tell us. Sonic explained.
Jay showed Sally to a chair and sat her down, placing her problem arm on the arm rest as Jay sat in a swivel chair. Jay then examined Sallys arm, curious at the lump which showed itself.
Hmm, let me take an X-ray. Jay said, contemplating what the lump could be.
She pushed back in the chair and lent over to grab a small screen about the size of a piece of A4 paper.
Whats that? Sally holding her arm and shying away.
Its alright Sal. Dont be scared. Sonic said as he stepped up and placed a protective arm around Sally. Truth was that Sonic was a bit worried himself.
This wont hurt at all. Its just an X-ray machine. Jay said smiling at Sallys nervousness.
Still apprehensive, Sally stuck out here arm while still holding onto Sonic. Jay held the small screen over Sallys arm and pressed a button. Sally shut her eyes, burrowed her face into Sonics chest and held his arm, expecting the worst. The small screen shot out a light over Sallys arm as it scanned her arm. Sonic wrapped his arms around Sally and held her close.
All done. Jay announced.
Huh? Sally opened one eye and turned her head slightly to look at her arm.
Jay sat back and pressed a few buttons, squinting at the image.
So what is it? Sonic asked.
Hmm, Im not sure. Let me turn it to a 3-D image and we should get a clearer picture of what it is.
Jay pressed a few more buttons and her face was lit with a green light.
No, this cant be right.
What is it? Sally asked, somewhat worried at the way Jay was looking at the screen.
Pressing a few more buttons, Jays face turned to one of shock.
But, how? This is impossible.
Sally held Sonic closer. Sonic gently gave Sally a little squeeze to give her a bit of comfort.
whats impossible? Sonic asked.
Well, how can I put this? You have a piece of emerald lodged in your arm. Jay said bluntly.
I have a what? Sally asked, somewhat lost.
Here check for yourself. Jay said and handed the screen to Sally.
She took it and held it so Sonic could see. On the screen was a X-Ray of Sallys arm with a roughly pointed piece of the something. It was filled out in a green 3-D format with a red circle around it. Next to it was a small screen with a diagnostic read out which read thusly;
Unknown foreign body detected. Item is of crystalline structure and radiates an unknown power source weak in nature. Searching data banks for known aliments. None found, searching archives. 1 match found. Foreign body identified as Emerald. Known extraction not noted. Surgery highly dissuaded. Advice: Seek out further information.
Sally looked up at Sonic as he looked up at her, wide eyed.
Everything alright? Jay asked.
Huh? Oh yeah everythings fine. Sonic said, absently.
How? Sally has a piece of Emerald in her arm but if you say so. But what I want to know is how did you get an Emerald shard in your arm?
Would you believe me if I told you we havent the foggiest. Sonic said, putting on a smile.
Well, I do find this strange. I guess the best thing to do would be to ask our resident hackers. Jay replied.
Hackers? Why would hackers know about this? Sally asked questioningly as Sonic raised an eyebrow.
Well, not only do they hack computers but they also store all types of info. They might be able to point you in the right direction. Jay said, standing up and taking the X-Ray screen from then.
Here follow me. She said and lead them out of the infirmary.
The corridors of the Eastern Freedom Fighters base were stacked with boxes, crates, metal chests, trolleys and other moving paraphernalia. As they wound there way around them, Sonic and Sally passed various rooms. Peeking inside as they passed they found the rooms crammed to bursting with other Freedom Fighters as well as equipment. Soon they entered a room that was crammed with computers showing a lot of different images and information, printers streaming reams and reams of paper and in the centre of all the chaos stood two Freedom Fighters. Sonic and Sally recognized Kali from earlier, but the female wolf was a mystery. Techno music blasted around the room as the two bounced to the music as they worked. Jay walked up to the stereo that sat on a rickety pair of shelves that were stuffed with old files, books and adult magazines and turned the stereo off. At once the duo stopped and turned round.
Hey who killed the tunes? The wolf asked.
Hey calm down whisper, its only Jay. Kali told her colleague.
The wolf turned and got up out of the beaten up old chair she was sitting in.
Whos this? The wolf asked Jay.
Sonic and Sally. Jay said.
Oh, so YOUR our visitors that I heard Kali talk about. Im Whispers Rose. The lupine introduced.
Whispers rose wore a baseball cap turned to one side. A beat up mens jacket over a faded yellow vest top, a pair of baggy jeans and ankle high black boots. Whispers looked like a tomboy but underneath that exterior, she radiated the femininity of a woman.
These are our hackers I told you about. Jay spoke.
Excuse me, data retrieval experts. Kali said as she read a printed report.
Hackers. Jay whispered to Sonic and Sally.
Ok, so what can we do for you? Whispers asked as she picked up a piece of cold pizza from a box that sat on top of a lot of files.
We need a file on Emerald extractions. Do you have any of them at all?
I dont know, hey Kali. Have we got any old fles on Emerald extractions in archives at all? Whispers asked.
Hold on, Ill check. Kali said, as she slid into one of the many seats that sat in front of the glowing computer banks.
Typing in a few words, Kali set the computer to raid its memory. Soon the computer turned up 5 matches.
Yup we got some. What type do you need? Kali asked.
We need to know how to get Emerald shards out of a person without surgery. Jay replied.
Oh yeah that reminds me, Kali, we need to update our Firewall. Who knows when Commander Scourge will try to hack our networks again. Whispers replied as she swallowed a piece of pizza.
Not only that but this needs your attention Jay, got it just now. I forgot about it when you started to talk about that file thing. Kali added, holding up a piece of paper without turning round.
Jay waked up and quickly read the note.
Whispers, how long will it take to set up the new Firewall? Jay asked.
I could set it on automatic. Itll take longer but itll get it done while were away.
Good, I need you and Kali to follow me. Call the others to the command room. Jay said.
Both the cat and wolf hurried out the door. Jay turned to Sonic and Sally.
Im sorry but this might take a while. Jay said as she motioned to the piece of paper. Let me show you our guest rooms.
Jay quickly lead them down the package cluttered corridors to the far end of the base.
These are our guest rooms. Your rooms are right here. Sorry I cant show you around but I need to go plan for our next big strike. Your free to go whoever in the base. Cya later. Jay said and left for the operations room. The doors and wall around had various dents and scratch marks where crates and boxes had hit the wall and door while being moved in the past. Upon opening the door, both Sonic and Sally found the room to be immaculate. Quite a change from the cluttered, cramped corridor outside. The room had a large rug in the centre on which stood a low coffee table with a sofa behind it. A double bed stood at the far end of the room with matching bedside tables as well as a wardrobe and dressing table. Sonic and Sally spent a moment to explore their new room.
Bathrooms en-suite. Sonic replied as he closed a door.
Fitted wardrobes as well. Sally replied.
After quickly looking round the room they met up again.
This is one nice room. Sonic quipped as he looked round.
Yeah, Jay mustve given us the best room in the base. Sally replied.
Sonic lay down on the bed and patted the space next to him. Sally flopped down next to him. The bed felt nice and soft and Sally immediately relaxed as she lay on it.
You hungry? Sonic asked.
Yeah, starved. Sally replied.
OK, lets see what type of chilli dogs they do around here. Sonic said as he sat up.
So Soni9c, with Sally at his side, left to find Jay to see what type of food there was to eat. Upon entering the operations room they found what had been a hurried meeting. Half finished cups of coffee stood on the map table along with various maps and reports. On top of them all, sat an envelope addressed to Sonic and Sally. Opening it, Sally took out the note and read it;
Sonic and Sally
Sorry to leave you without proper help but this mission we are on means we will be gone for a few days. Help yourself to anything you want and make yourselves at home.
Signed
Jay Foxfire.
Sally looked up at Sonic who smiled at her.
Hey Sal, you see what the note says. Lets go get something to munch on. It says to make ourselves at home so lets do it. Sonic said.
They found the cafeteria easily enough, and found that the kitchen was well maintained and amply supplied. Sonic cooked up a half dozen chilli dogs for himself while he cooked up some chips, beans and corned beef for Sally. Once it was all ready they sat and ate together.
Hows the meal? Sonic asked.
You know Blue, its always good when you do it. Sally replied.
Sonic smiled at Sally and she smiled back.
Once they had finished their meal, they retired to their room with full bellies and sleepy eyes. Sonic pulled back the duvet and yawned as he pulled off his gloves and shoes, placing them neatly on a chair. Sally stretched and removed her boots and waistcoat, placing them next to Sonics stuff. As they got into their soft bed they turned to face each other. Sally moved closer to Sonic and wrapped her arms around him. Sonic put his arms around her and stroked her auburn hair gently.
Sonic? Sally asked after a while.
Mmmm? Sonic mumbled sleepily.
Do you think theyll find something to get this Emerald out of my arm?
Of course they will. Dont you worry about it.
If we cant find the correct information, will this Emerald.kill me? Sally asked apprehensively.
No Sal, it wont and the reason being is I wont let it harm you. We will find it. I cant bear the thought of not being with you. I hate to even think it. Well always be together and we would sort out all our problems together as well. And I intend to stick to that promise. Sonic said as he snuggled next to Sally.
Sonic, I love you. Was all Sally could utter.
Sonics words had touched her heart. She believed him, he could find the answer. She got comfortable on Sonics chest where the thudding of his heart made her feel at ease.
And I love you too Sal. Sonic said in response, giving Sally a little squeeze.
And with that they both fell asleep, to await the mornings next light.
