Did anyone actually think they were/are worth it? I know there are whole forums on websites like <a href="" http://www.sonicretro.org">Soni c" Retro</a> dedicated to them, but have you ever found a good one? I remember there was one called Sonic Megamix that that was basicly Sonic 1 with the levels redesigned and the light speed dash (sonic would follow a trail of rings) introduced. Also, you could play as Mighty and you would have multiple kinds of shields (like Sonic 3) all at once and you could switch between them.

Are there any other good ones?
Megamix was pretty good. There was another decent one that I can't remember off the top of my head, with hubworlds and day/night and four acts a zone. But I think that one stopped.

I used to pay attention to this sort of thing, but effort.

Sonic 2 Heroes is pretty good.

You play as Sonic, Tails, & Knuckles all at once through Sonic 2. You can swap characters with the 'A button.'

I forgot the name of the hack but there was one that was Sonic 1 but the bosses were a LOT harder. Like the boss in Green Hill Zone had no floor and you had to beat the ball and chain Robotnik without falling down into the pit. I was wtf'ing at how hard the boss became with just some small change in the design.

Sonic 2 Heroes is amazing.

:O

The intro screen is better than I could ever predict and the dashing is epic. This is better than Knuckles in Sonic 2.

Here are some notable ones that I can remember.

Character hacks: It just replaces the character, bringing along their own signature moves to boot. It's fun to revisit the game again to try and break the level design as much as you can and gives some new life to the game.

Tails in Sonic 1 - http://info.sonicretro.org/Tails_in_Sonic_the_Hedgehog
Knuckles in Sonic 1 - http://info.sonicretro.org/Knuckles_the_Echidna_in_Sonic_the_Hedgehog
Amy in Sonic 1 - http://info.sonicretro.org/Amy_Rose_in_Sonic_the_Hedgehog
Mighty in Sonic 1 - http://info.sonicretro.org/Mighty_the_Armadillo_in_Sonic_the_Hedgehog

The S Factor: A Sonic 1 hack that's still not finished, but you can check the 'demo' work in progress. Most levels have been edited. http://info.sonicretro.org/The_S_Factor:_Sonia_and_Silver
Sonic 2 XL: A Sonic 2 hack... with a twist! See for yourself if you want. http://info.sonicretro.org/Sonic_2_XL
Sonic 1 Retro Channel: This is Sonic 1, but with a bunch of playable extra features. Including a Ringless boss rush, and keeps tabs or your highest times, rings, scores, etc. - http://info.sonicretro.org/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_1_@_SAGE_201

I'd find others, but Retro's moving slow right now.
