What THS said is correct. However, he omitted one vital fact: the image you wish to link to must already exist on the internet. You can't just link to something on your hard drive; it has to be uploaded to the internet somewhere for it to work. Some forums (not ezBoard forums, but for example vBulletin forums) have separate options for uploading images and other files from your computer.
If you need help getting hosting for images, you might try Photobucket, but I can't offer much other advice, sorry.
