And of course, we get our usual chock full of spoilers. Now, my two cents and stuff.
COVER:
Eh.
Now that that's out of the way...
STORY:
~The first few pages consist of Shadow yet again looking for his past or some other angst filled, anti-hero mission, heading to an SS Military complex where we hear Gerald's video diary ramble on and on while Shadow gets his butt kicked by another Metal Sonic.
~Both Shadow and Metal Sonic go unconscious due to Metal Sonic using some sorta cannon to cause an explosion. M (remember her?) finds the two hedgehogs and takes them.
~We get to Eggman (in his night robe), and finally get to the freakin' title ("System Shutdown") where Eggy finds out he has 19 some hours before he experiences a "system shutdown." Whatever that is.
~Cut to Sonic's place where he sings in the night and his parents are concerned about his love life, but while Pa wants to help, Ma asks not to interfere.
~Eggman (in his normal outfit) and ADAM concludes Snively, Knuckles, the royals, and Sonic generally might be threatening whatever the hell "system shutdown" is. Eggman automatically goes for Sonic.
~Scene of Rosie and Hope doing laundry until the sunlight is blocked by an egg-shaped ship.
~Eggman leaves the Eggship calmly and heads to a certain direction. Tails wants to kick some butt, but Rotor sez as long as he ain't doing any threatening, they let Eggman be. Right. That's fine with the nonviolent sense, but letting an evil villan walk all over Knothole City? Rotor, I thought you were smart.
~Sonic sees Eggman and goes, but Ma insist he eats breakfast first. Sonic does the non-heroic thing and eats FIRST before telling his mother of Eggman. Smart, Sonic, smart.
~As he leaves, Eggman comes to his front door and kicks Sonic butt through martial arts or something. Turns out he's some sort of hologram and he needs Sonic's help in exchange of turning Jules back to normal.
~Rotor goes too for the technological expertise and a noise comes that Eggman has no clue what it is.
~M comes in and acts like her short scene in #141 wasn't even there as she proceeds to kick Eggman's ass. It means Penders is probably doing his darndest to avoid Karl Boller's story. Blasphemey!
~Sonic fights M and is knocked unconscious.
~Then we see an entire army of Metal Sonic, I think in their Sonic Heroes forms.
Man, I'm not even getting into the plotholes, but the letters, fanart, and editorial in general is back. Personally, I like the cover to Sonic X #5. Very cute.

Is there less story content because of it?
No, the editorial is only one page and it's at the way back.
~Neo
i thought they would be in Sonic heroes form, it was just the shape of their heads on the cover of the next one that tipped me off.
You know what? For the first time in 2 years there is a story that sounds REALLY good. I'm gonna get this Issue... after Christmas because in England it just past Midnight.
::looks at y our username::
Oh, God. There's more of them.
Anyway, this issue won't be in stores till Wednesday at least.

>_< I miss the old smart, gun loving Rotor(okay he really doesn't love guns but at least he didn't complain of using one when necesary).
Rotor doesn't love guns? May I turn your attention to the first page of #44?
but remember the whole "freedom fighters never use guns. never have never will" plothole?
I haven't got the chance to read it yet, but I'm starting to wonder just exactly how much archie can do with Shadow. I mean just from reading part of the spoliers it seems like a rehash of previous issues.
Man, talk about a misleading cover. Shadow barely even appears in this issue.
Well, let's see...we have Shadow investigating a mysterious factory, an ambush by Metal Sonic...and next issue we have...*gasp* Sonic vs. Shadow! Where have we seen this before? Oh yes, we had all of those things happen about ten issues ago!
Though, I have to say I do think this story is a whole lot more interesting than the aforementioned storyline (146-149). I personally think the comic flows much better with issue-length stories instead of trying to tell a relatively short story over four issues with generally uninteresting substories (again, 146-149. They could have easily covered it in 2 issue-length parts). I look forward to see who M and Metal Sonic are working for.
Also, I like the more detailed look Lim gives to Eggman now, as well as the way he draws Metal Sonic.
What can I say? It was a good issue. 4 out of 5.
wait, did they even HAVE a reason to fight in this issue?
Well, they are enemies...
And, it was Eggman's orders that Metal Sonic hunt down his rivals: Sonic and Shadow.
My standard question now that I'm not collecting monthly: What does Knuckles do? ^_^
He doesn't show up in this issue, TR.
~Neo
Yes, but regardless of that, it is still an awesome issue! =)
No issue can be awesome without Knuckles. Thanks, Neo. 🙂
Looks like Knuckles gets to do nothing but play Gin Rummy with Vector offcamera again. Knuckles and the Chaotix desperatly need thier own series or mini series. Alot of people wanna know what they're up to.
I'm glad to see that this issue puts the focus away from any of the dang relationship angles (with the exception of Sonics parents mentioning it). I'm getting really sick of them.
I saw this issue in the comic store today, flipped through it quickly, and put it back on the shelf without bothering to read it. I'll probably go back and catch up on it later, but from what I saw there wasn't really anything worth buying it for. Just an introduction to one of Ken's wonderful stories...~__~ I was thrilled to see the letters page back!!! Finally no more stupid ads!
I just got the issue today, and I thought it wasn't bad at all. They story makes you go WTF sometimes, and their was little of Shadow, but it was still decent!
It was really good, the story went along smoothly.
My only question is who's behind all this, and why is M saying it's now time for Eggman to pay for crimes againest the kingdom of Acorn.
I wonder, could it be (and this a long shot) Tails behind this, just so he prove him self in the eyes of certain foxette, or is someone of the unknown (maybe even Sally?, (yeah right ) )
Guess well have to wait and see.
Happy New Year.

So, do I, but with Mike saying they are going to use Blaze, why do I have a nagging feeling that M's and Metal's boss is Eggman-Nega? Anyway, I like the issue very well I guess mostly because it leaves you hanging about who's behind the meltdown.
Also, I just love the release dates they have for the next comics because they said Sonic #158 was coming out 12/25/2006 and that Sonic X #5 was coming out in Februrary but with the comic printing for only ten months in a year that may very well be possible.
Why this issue rocks.
#1 No Romance stuff (Except for some slight discussion)
#2 A full, issue not shortened by a side story.
#3 Sonic Grams is back
#4 Brandon Corcione's interpretation of Sonic. (Giant head with two tiny legs. I love it! Reminds me of that one Iron Man villan. I think his name was Morgul or something.)
#5 no "Extra comic" toy ad inserts.
#6 Ron Lim's art is getting a little better. Still needs to work on his side profiles though. He should stick with off center angles.
#7 But the main reason, a good story with a great cliffhanger written by Ken "The Pen" Penders.
P.S. Rotor did it. I just betcha! Who let Robotnik in Knothole without any confrontation? Who went with Sonic to Robotnik's lab? Whom other than Tails has the technological knowhow?
Then again, why would Mecha knock aside her new "master"? Dang. Now that I think about it, that may rule him out. Maybe Uncle Chuck?
P.S. anyone notice that the staff credited themselves twice? Once, on the front page, and second about six pages in.
seriously, it makes alot of sense.

While theoretically that could work, the fact is this story would've been written long before Sonic Rush came out. And since there wasn't any info on Eggman Nega before the game was released, the chances are slim that it's Nega.
Eggman Nega could be Anonymous too. But if it was revealed that he is, then it would only show that nobody at Archie knew who the heck Anonymous was supposed to be in the first place.
Who is Nega?
The "Eggman" from Blaze the Cat's dimension.
I've figured it out. It's Uncle Chuck.
Robotnik mentions a technology he thought was lost to him, which would obviously be Robotization. Charles was the inventor of that technology. I believe that using the nanites, Charles has (stupidly) brought back Robotization, and is going to use it on Robotnik for revenge. Evidence is in the latest previews.
Sonic #158 "Ken Penders & Ron Lim "System Reconfiguration": Robotnik... Shadow... Mecha... and an army of Metal Sonic Troopers! Could things possibly get worse for Sonic and Rotor? Only the amazing revelations made by Robotnik himself... If he's telling the truth! Meanwhile, Uncle Chuck has a revelation of his own. Don't miss all the action, intrigue, nuts, bolts, and microchips as Knothole Village faces its greatest threat ever!"
Sonic #159 "Ken Penders & Ron Lim System Reboot: The action-packed, multi-issue epic comes to a sensational end and the non-stop thrills are bound to leave your head spinning! As their robotic creations wreck havoc around them, the contrast between the malevolent Dr. Robotnik and the benevolent Uncle Chuck is heightened. Now Sonic, Knuckles and all the good citizens of Knothole Village must restore order from the Metal Sonic Troopers and you wont believe who their latest ally is! PLUS: The tradition of sizzling Sonic short stories continues with another great back-up tale!"
If he does plan this, it would be a huge mistake and play right into Robotniks hands. He's been whining about his "flesh form" and has wanted to be inorganic again. Plus, if Robotnik survives, Chuck would be handing him the technology to roboticize mobians again!
Well, that's just my prediction anyway.
wow, a pretty good issue to come back to. Stopped reading for a couple of years (due to college, lack of time, money, and other things). Decided to get back into Sonic mode when i came home and picked up this issue and the Shadow game with my Christmas money.
I must say this issue was really good. Shadow didn't really desearve a cover devoted to him since the story really didn;t revolve around him, but it was cool to see Spaz's version of the Shadow game cover. Eggman coming to Sonic's house was weird lol but I LOVED Sonic getting his butt handed to him by Eggman (i know, i'm sick ^_^). And it ended on a pretty nice cliffhanger. I'm actually curious who this new guy is to even outdo eggman in terms of cunning. Looks like i'm back in the fold, and at the moment, I'm glad to have come back (the shadow game's a differnt story lol)
That wasn't Eggman. Do you remember Sonic saying that Eggman could never beat him? Eggman had a 3D solidifier, probably a thin robot projecting the hologram of Eggman. That's why when Sonic kicked the robot, or "solidifier" within, only the hologram remained. That's a combination of what Eggman said, and a personal theory of mine.
I too have a nagging feeling about this whole situation. I think that this person and ANONYMOUS are one in the same and I suspect they are both the preserved Professor Kintobor from last year's Good, Bad, and Unknown arc. The parallels with Robotnik, Sonic, Shadow, and Metal Sonic are just too strong to suggest otherwise to me.
Yea, but what about the whole "crimes against Knothole" bit?
Bw, please dont ever, EVER, say that again. Your Jokes REALLY creep me out.
But what happened to Shadow? Neo said M found him and draged him off.
Metal Shadow, Metal Shadow...
Here's a better idea that I've had ever since I mistook one of the drawings from the bonus sketchbook section of that crappy #115: MECHA SHADOW.
But what happened to Shadow? Neo said M found him and draged him off.
Ahh, who knows? Maybe next issue will tell cuz' the only Shadow you see is in the beginning before he gets dragged away by M.
~Neo
Issac saw Metal Sonic in GBU, so... yes it could be that Professor whatever made the Mecha Sonics. And since Ken write GBU (i think) and he's leaving after this Arc. so it makes sence.
Edit: Well now I got the Issue and the first bit of critsem was:
"Whats with the Shadow look?"
Because when Sonic fought Holo-Robotnik, he looked a lot like Shadow (Quills, Canine)
i read the issue and have one immediate question in response. why in the beginning did Shadow break through a wall into the compound instead of useing the door clearly shown the panel before?
i have a small feeling that Anonymous might be finally taken care of, to clear away some of the plotlines before the comic gets rolling with the new writers. i certainly wouldn't mind having this all taken care of so we can get on to new things.

Because just walking in a door isnt dramatic enough an entrance for Mr. Shadow...

Ron tends to draw Sonic with ridiculously oversized quills. It's funny how he draws Shadow alot better than Sonic. Sad fact is, Sonic seems to be the character he has the toughest time drawing. I wonder why that is?
while i found Ron's art to be average this issue, compared to his own skill, i found his Metal Sonic (the one Shadow fought, not the others) to be exceptionally well done in places.
Ron's not an untalented artist, (His work on Thanos proved that to me) and his work on the book is improving. He just needs to work a little better on Sonic himself, and stop doing those side profiles. He should keep drawing either centered or slightly off-center. Human characters like Robotnik, Mecha and the like look fine. He also seems to do a very good job with Shadow (which is odd since that's Sonic doppelganger).

canine? are we talking teeth or animals? coz I thought everyone knew hedgehogs to be rodents 😛
But they aren't rodents. They'te insectivores.
*checks wikipedia*
hmmm...seems you are right...*listened to much to Robotnik*
though many hedgehods are near-omnivores.
Do you really think when I said 'Canine' that I was stupid enough to think Sonic was a Dog? No, I meant the Tooth. Sonic's canine was showen, which is simular too Shadow.

I dont presume to know anything about your brain-capacity, that is why I asked to make sure.
