Hey, Folks.

I'm working on the script for issue 10 of Sonic X and I'm hoping that you all can help me out. We're doing a storyline to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the first Sonic game--a game I used to play for hours on the Genesis platform and have recently been revisiting via the Mega Collection.

Where I need help is with the names of the various badniks--like the Buzz Bombers--so that I can use the proper names in the scripts. This way, the artist will know exactly what I am talking about. Is there any place on the web where I can find the names and images for the artist's reference? I've been googling around, but haven't struck paydirt yet.

Short of that, can you all at least give me the proper names of the various badniks? It would be a huge help!

Thanks,
Joe Edkin

(And don't forget to take your quiz! There's still time to submit your answers to receive a signed copy of Sonic X #1.)

This should have the JAPANESE ones, but not the US ones. Granted, the Japanese names seem to be the more canon ones nowadays, but I'll see if I can't find the US ones for better comparison; if nothing else, I'll yank 'em from the manual scans from Sonic Jam (although those should be in Mega Collection too; go look for 'em when you get the chance). Until then, I suppose the Japanese names will work as a placeholder, right?

EDIT: N/M, Shadow of a Hedgehog had the scans I would've made anyway.

That help?

And the Badniks that are floating heads w/ spiked balls hovering around them are called Orbinauts, if I remember right; and the robot bats are called Batbots.

Although, personally, Uni-Uni sounds cooler, and is more consistent with Sonic Adventure (I think there were enemies called Uni-somethingsomething there)...

That was Sonic 2, not 1.

Sonic 1 had Uni-uni and Unidus. The latter fired spike balls at you whilst the prior didn't. Unidus later appeared in Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2.

In the past few years, whenever an old enemy has reappeared the original Japanese name has been used globally, so it's best to stick with them, all listed here: ghz.emulationzone.org/son.../son1.html

As for the animals that are trapped inside the robots in Sonic 1.

From left to right: Flicky (bird), Pocky (rabbit), Pecky (penguin), Ricky (squirrel), Kucky (chicken), Picky (pig), Rocky (walrus).

To pluralise change the y to ies. EG, Sonic saw a Flicky fly by, but Tails saw two Flickies fly by.

Please take into account, however, that the -cky animals don't actually appear within Sonic X canon until after the Shadow/Space Colony ARK story arc. Although, I suppose it's possible that some of them were on Angel Island and Mystic Ruins when they crossed over after Episode 26, but they were never shown.

Also, for colour images, no better place to look than here:

vgaa.emulationzone.org - Video Game Art Archive

and

sost.emulationzone.org - Secrets of Sonic Team

My two webpages. In the VGAA webpage, I have some nice colour spots of all the Sonic 2 enemies. In SoST, in the main megadrive sections, I have scans of the full-colour Japanese manuals. As mentioned, ghz.emulationzone.org has all the information you'll probably need for names and whatnot.

That is true. With this in mind it should also be noted that all of the Sonic 1 animals (except Picky, the pig) also appeared in Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, both of which were set on Angel Island. Sonic 3's instruction manual made it clear that Knuckles lived on Angel Island with these animals, so they are definitely native, not just brought over by Eggman. There's no reason that this wouldn't also apply to Sonic X, so as long as the story is set some time after episode 26, it's all set and good to go.

When Romanizing Japanese names/words "K" is usually used to make that sound, rather than a "C". I'm not sure why the English Sonic Jam staff went with the "C" spelling. I'd not really given the "C" spelling a second thought until Acrio and I had a conversation about a few weeks back. Incidentally, the "K" spelling seems to be what Green Gibbon! is using for the GHZ nowdays.

Besides, it's not like it's impossoble that some animals were Chaos Controlled over in Episode 1, anyway...

No, just highly unlikely.
