I'm starting to liken Dan's reviews to Jack Chick tracts; lots of extremist ranting and raving that were really popular at first, but nowadays almost nobody seems to take seriously and very few even care about anymore.

And no, I didn't come to that conclusion because he uses Creationism to try and discredit the main story. Which despite his disclaimer seems like obvious flamebait... he spends years talking about a story where talking animals rule the land and sorcerors are flinging magic spells around like so much truck-stop hash, and only now he feels it contradicts his religious teachings? Huh?

Sometimes I wonder if Dan knows just how crazy these reviews are, and is just trying to string everyone along until they catch on.

along the lines of how dedicated and how easy it is for you to find specific things i wouldnt have ever noticed or seen, its pretty cool, i would never be able to sit and write out a big long essay on just one issue.

Can you believe the bible reference?! What a lameo. This is a COMIC not a 600 page computer manuel! But I agree with the Spy vs Spy thing, it was really pathetic and they could've used a Knuckles story instead!

Das, Solo didn't write the review. He just posted it here for people to see. Dan Drazen wrote it, as Solo said in the subject title.

Edit: From now on, post all Dan Drazen Reviews in this topic. I'll link to it on the top of the board. These reviews rarely get a lot of posts and there's no real need to have one every single month.

I beleive in evolution, and I also had a problem with the origin of life on that planet-- evolution says nothing about trees suddenly growing where there wasn't even plant life before!

As for Dan's reveiw, I noticed he seems to have made a mistake! He asked how Sonic knew he had several weeks worth of rations... Well, Sonic is pulling out the rations as he says it, so obviously Sonic is figuring it out as we watch...

On the other hand, his reveiw of the Spy vs Spy story was quite facinating and informative.

(BTW, I have my own reveiw of 127 posted on my site.)

After carefully skimming though the issue, the other day at the bookstore, I have to agree with Dan overall about the story. I just didn't find Sonic #127 interesting; I suppose one is bound to come across an issue like that every once in awhile.

Frosty, This wasn't really evolution in the beggining. Life was being created, at a very quick pase. Remember, 'What came first, the Chicken or the Egg'? Which came from nothing? These trees ancestors came from nothing. Only when the froggys came out did the evolution begin.

Sonic called it evolution.

But yeah, trees popping out of the ground from nothing is not evolution, it is creation...

Acording to the theory of evolution, life (on Earth) only came into existance once. All other life-- plant, animal, and otherwise-- evolved from that first strand of nucleic acid. ...But that's not what the art suggests happened on the Azurites' world...

So, Dan finally got around to reviewing 128! Took him long enough-- I just got 129!

It was interesting reading his review of the issue, and comparing it to mine. When I wrote my review, I was so happy to see EVE again, I was willing to overlook the story's flaws.

Also, EVE's flawed logic didn't bug me-- that's part of her charecter.

I do agree with Dan on one point, though-- I wish we coulda seen more of those mercinaries!

Edit: No one's commented on Dan's review of 129 yet. Huh. Well, rather than making a third post in a row, I guess I'll just add on to this...

I couldn't beleive Dan made such a big deal about Sonic's coment that "nobody will see [Uncle Chuck] again once he gets his hands on my spaceship". Dan asks if he missed something. I'd say, yeah. I'm sure Sonic meant Uncle Chuck would want to spend lots of time studying the ship, not that he would hop in and blast off!

Well, that's all I wanted to say...

Agreed. Thats part of why I like her as well. She believes that the things she does are right, but goes about them in horribly wrong ways. Her character is kinda tragic in that sense.

So I'm not the only one who thought that a rather ludicrous observation? It was meant and said as a joke and he went and analyzed the heck out of it in a completely wrong context. 😛

Dan tries to be the Louis Black of Archie Sonic, but the material's so thin anyway he pretty much ends up just blowing out a ton of steam.

Well whad'ya know. He actually liked an issue for a change! It's been a while since that's been the case!

In fact, I think he liked it a little bit TOO much. I mean, I liked it quite a bit myself, but... "The comic seems poised to finally live up to its potential and break out
from the shadow of Archie's mainline titles into what passes in the industry for greatness." ...?

I mean, really. These are the same guys who've been doing the comic for years. Past experiance says they're gonna mess up again sometime. Hopefully not too badly, or too soon, but still... I don't see how they could ever live up to Drazen's standards for more than a few issues at a time...

...Whatcha wanna bet he goes back to hating the comic the moment they screw-up in the slightest?

Oh... and I can't beleive he was almost okay with the "Technolo-tree". That was the worst pun I've seen in the comic's main storyline in a long time!

I also noticed that, Dubba. After careful observation and painstaking research, I believe he misunderstood it because he's a total jackass. Taking his approach towards reviewing a teen's comicbook about a videogame featuring anthro animals fighting against a fat guy and some robots would make anyone a jackass.

If you don't know what I mean by "his approach", just glance over his reviews. He acts almost insulted when every book doesn't live up to great works of literature from our time (by "our time" I mean his time, which is a very different time indeed), and frequently deviates from actual reviewing to reminisce about books or movies published/released about 30 years before we were born. Also, he actually writes down St. John as "Sinjin" like he's trying to prove something. Yeah Dan, it's the British pronunciation. Quit being a dick about it.

The final straw - he really shouldn't be doing it. His whole approach is askew simply because of his age and "experience". He's a 50+ librarian with so little time on his hands he makes himself feel better by ripping apart children's comics and pretending he still cares for the characters. Well, still cares for Sally. *Sighs* As nice as it is to have a hobby, Dan, you really need to, like, go outside or something.

Geez, the Dan bashing is pretty surprising.

Sure, he can be over-dramatic, but he's got the point of using "It's only a comic book" as an excuse. I seem to think he's getting more and more angry with the comics because of their growing ineptitude for telling a good story. The older comics were shorter and full of praise - now they're full of essays and small rants. That says something to me. I pretty much do the same thing, I rant when I'm ticked off.

...though, granted, if I were writing the comic, I'd used references from all the stuff he mentioned, if only because I've read it and admire it, not to appease him. XD

Can you believe the bible reference?! What a lameo.

-Elias5

And what, praytell, is wrong with a Biblical (yes, it is supposed to be capitalized) reference in a review of a lame comic? Maybe the guys' just living his faith. It's a free country, after all. Why do people get up in arms about something like the Bible, but never the Koran or Confucius or any religious work whatsoever? It's always "rag on the Bible" time, it seems. And anyone who steps up and actually says what they believe is ostracized as some kind of moron. And this from people who claim to be all for "free speech". What a joke...

Gotta love how he blames me for a line rewritten by the editor:

But we get no further than page [3]
when Karl favors us with a grammar goof: "I forgot how strongly
Knuckles feels for these dudes," Sonic thinks to himself instead
of "I forgot how strongly Knuckles feels ABOUT these dudes." To
"feel for" someone is to display sympathy at the very least and
compassion or affection at the most. After all, Shaka Khan sang
"I feel for you/I think I love you" and not "I feel for you/I'll
kick your butt now."

The line I originally scripted was: I forgot how much Knuckles hates these dudes!

But Dan-Dan the librari-an, just couldn't resist the opportunity to malign me yet again in print. I thought he had sworn off bloviating every month in search of other pursuits?

I mean, doesn't the card catalog need dusting? Shouldn't he be demonstrating his power by shushing noisy patrons?

The name Doctor Finitevus was not my idea, either, but he lays that carcass at my doorstep as well.

Funny how the one line he did like, he feigns not knowing whether it was provided by me or Jon. Guess it would've killed him to admit otherwise.

I find that I don't even read his reviews any longer, I just skim to where my name is to see what kind of trash he's got to say.

Then he says:

"...possibly because Karl would rather be writing
for Superman, he mistakes the Master Emerald for kryptonite.
There's no other explanation for Knuckles suddenly being racked
with pain."

Right. No other explanation. Once again, Dan has hit the nail right on the finger...

So it was changed just to malign you?

How self-destructive is this comic? Are they just thinking "someone with talent is writing on these pages, lets make the fans hate them"

I'm tired of all the Karl bashing I see everywhere. Just because the guy credits the reader by not giving all the answers straight away and making the characters human and emotional and 3 dimensional, people go ballistic like this. It's not right, it's not fair and it really has to stop...

*Cheers at seeing Karl post again*

No, I believe he's pointing out that Dan seems to like finding excuses to put him down. (EDIT: And he posted while I was writing this.)

IMO, the bashers are just a vocal minority, who happen to be common at Ken Penders' board. And we know BobR takes every opportunity to make it that way.

Ah sorry, mis-read. I appologise (side note: Working and posting do not go together very well)

All I can say about Dan is that he's a complete twit. He's looking for reasons to hate you and if he's picking at minor grammer mistakes, you have to wonder why you're wasting time even acknowledging that his monthly review exists. It's clear this guy has an irrational hatred of you and the rest of the comic staff.

Under Gabie the comic was really crappy and going down hill, but I honestly and wholey believe you were the only one with the intergrity to not drag the thing down with the others. I mean while Romy is doing ego-trip stories about his/her crappy fan-character (which is the best way to describe Tommy) and Ken is doing completely irrelevant side-stories and changing the whole system of the Sonic formula and slapping a "It's better!" sticker on, to a point which would make George Lucas envy. You are the only one who bothers trying to take the comic anywhere.

It really REALLY pisses me off when writers take an established franchise and try to burn their mark on it, you see it so often now'a'days, it's taken down some of my favourite comics and TV shows, I can't even look at the main canon comics of X-men and Spider-Man after what some of the writers have done to them, and if you're aware of the UK comic you'd know that the same thing happened here.

Screw what the nay-sayers say, you're doing a great job and no single grammer mistake can deride that.

Bottom line is that Dan's just a sour old man who believes that he commands power of the Archie fandom and is using it to... well be a sour old man :p

Thanks for coming by to defend yourself Mr. Bollers. Fear not, it's hard for me to take Drazen very seriously when he acts like this. However I think you should be careful not to bring yourself down to his level. You have every right to be angry towards his unfair bashing, but I don't think it was necessary to respond with those librarian digs. I'm sure there are more even-tempered librarian Sonic fans out there who wouldn't appreciate being grouped into the same category as Drazen.

Don't let him get to you. Just keep writing good, fun stories and I know I'll be very happy. :thumbsup

Agreed. It kinda has that same effect on the dubbed Sonic X when in epsiode 22, Amy makes one little sentence mistake and everyone goes ballistic. Please, it's just one little sentence.

Anywho, I agree with everyone, except the part where Karl mentioned Finitevus, how he wasn't the one who created that name, yet was blamed by Drazen all along. Now, I can understand if Drazen didn't know that, of course if he did and he still felt the need to BBQ him, then gosh...that man needs to simmer down and have himself some coooool beverage.

I wasn't taking a dig at librarians (I worked in a library for three years while in college), I was taking a dig at Dan.

If he were a dog catcher, I would've asked if there weren't any strays that needed to be deloused. My point being that he spends time he should be devoting to work to posting on message boards, etc. ;)
