I gotta disagree with Mr. Drazen. I love Off Panel. Of course, they'd never greenlight the strips I imagine

Curse you Comics Code! *shakes fist*

Some good points, but Dan is also slipping a bit. Tracy! did not pencil TDS, that was Fry. Still it was nice to hear some positive bits highlighted (I liked Fiona's convo with Bean too) Think I woulda named Scourge as best new character, or do villains not count?

Maybe he dosen't think that Scourge is all that importent or maybe he dosen't like him at all. I don't know the answer.

His 2002 review had Metal Sonic as the best new character but darn Dan! I see he still has a very critical eye to the comic in general...haha

Perhaps Scourge doesn't count as new since he's an old character revamped?

That too. Then again, he said the best new character of 2003 was the developed Mina Mongoose despite the fact that she was introduced a few years before that.

He did seem to be happy on a bunch of Ian's issues, putting Ian's hiring as the Best Thing of 2006.

He's never consistantly happy, if that's what you mean. Mostly his happiness for issues tends to come in fits and spurts, depending on how he felt the comics inside were done.

I do respect Mr. Drazen and his reviews, but ultimately he's the Roger Ebert of Sonic Comic reviewers- arguably the most well-known reviewer, the most articulate...but at the same time he only holds about as much sway in his opinion as you and me.

I personally find his reviews to be interesting and entertaining. While I disagree with some of his perspectives, I really do like reading them for the most part. If nothing else, they're good, if somewhat slanted in POV, recaps. I will give him credit for staying with the series longer than I did; I quit soon after 125, he continued on into the 150's before giving up (and subsequently returning, ironically around the same time I came back to the series).

By the way, anyone know why about half of the pages in this topic have their messages "missing and can not be restored"?

Ezboard got hacked a while ago and resulted in a lost of messages going missing.

Frankly, I'm just relieved that I wasn't the only one who thought that the pile of SatAM fanservice that was 173 wasn't "all that", either.

As Dan says: I hope that it's actually leading to something interesting in the next issue or so.

Hmmm. I wonder if he'll review the Free Comic Book Day issue.

Forgive me for asking a stupid question. But when did the king return to this throne? (When did Drazen start to review again?)

I would'nt refer to him as "the king", his ego's already large enough as it is. =p

He only stopped for like two or three issues if I recall correctly

He quit reviewing after issue #156, then came back and starting reviewing again in #162. So that's 5 issues skipped.

Though in his "Best/Worst Lists" for 2005 and 2006 he gives a few opinions on some of the issues in-between.

I do so enjoy a monthly whine. =p

If it were up to this guy, it'd be nothing but touchy feely, and smootches on every single panel. Yawn. XD

Maybe he'll stop reviewing AGAIN. Yea, sure.

I disagree with that comment on him wanting nothing but fluffy smooching - he gave 134 some of the highest scores he ever has, and he had no problem with the 174 back-up story.

His criteria might not be obvious or even understandable at times, but I wouldn't call him a 'shipper in the slightest.

175 all evilness aside was a GOOD story. And that's what Dan believes in, IMHO.

Picky, Picky, Dan. I liked issue #174, and I would have given a higher heart score. Just goes to show that I don't always agree with Dan even though we have simliar backgrounds in Sonic fandom(coming into it by Sat a.m.), and the fact that I am going back to school soon to become a librarian.

*Reads the review of #174 and grunts* ...Ok, I've known it for a while, but now it's official. Drazen doesn't know what the frak he's talking about anymore.

He has become a bit more opinionated, but he's a human being.
Dan's good at what he does.

Ian said that the narrator of 174 was in fact Robotnik, and was surprised not many people picked up on it. I didn't, but reading it again, I can see Robotnik saying that stuff. Hmm.

I didn't realize that Robotnik was narrating Sonic #174, but now that I think about it at least some of the narrator parts do sound like him.

Dan's seems to be not speechless, but scoreless when it comes to 175, wonder what'll he'll say with 176?

Calm down, Drazen! It's just a silly comic book.:crazy

okay, i know i'm really late to the game, but i read the 2006 year in review and i just have to say that the last paragraph he wrote was just crap. basically he's saying "too much fighting" but it's just dumb to say that. ian's put in a good amount of fighting into a comic that didn't have nearly enough. i enjoyed all of the scourge fights so far, and i laughed when sonic was pounding bean. i've gotta agree with toby barret on this one, if dan had his way it'd just be touchy feely the whole time.

seriously there hasn't been one fight i haven't enjoyed so far, they have all been pretty cool. we can't have a comic that just overflows with sonic "spindashing" robots or other enemies and just winning. that gets old and boring so quickly.

That is the exact same way I feel Hyper! I used to love Dan Drazen's reviews, but now I can barely stand to read his new stuff. No matter how many people loves a story arc it seems he just wants to piss everyone off by saying it sucks! And if he really wants touchy feely then he best start reviewing another franchise because last time I checked Sonic the Hedgehog was all about the action and the adventure!

I kinda wish he wouldn't pimp his own stuff. A review isn't really a place to say: read my fanfic, I know how to handle exposition. It's more for focusing on the licensed product.
No mention of Meg defending Elias' actions which I felt a real charcter defining moment for a girl we'd never seen much of. Or thoughts on if Rotor's back injury will pose a problem for him in later issues. Sonic/Tails arguing, Charmy getting grape'd, and Sally's reluctance to trust a plan not of her own making are all glossed over. In favor of griping what to call the new Knothole? :?
Dan's reviews used to be a good resource for those that could not find/buy issues but wanted to follow plot, now it just feels strange.
And it does strike me as unfair to leave Sonic X in the cold just cuz the stories are slighty sillier than the main comic.

Shoot, the comic book first started off as zany and silly as Sonic X. He could read those after getting worked up about the main series to cool off...:p

^ Pretty much what I was thinking. Especially since Nicole flat-out calls it New Mobotropolis.

Lame "review."

I can't believe Dan is spitting on the time-honored tradition that is the Villainous Monologue.. Does the man have no respect for the classics?

You can't really blame him for being cynical about the series, though. Reading almost every issue of this series (save some of the earlier ones, and that brief hiatus he took after #156) AND reviewing them is bound to leave anyone cynical about it.
