I believe that the stories we read in recent issiues of Sonic, would have been what Satam could've had if they still aired today.
Boooowweeeeoooo, You can read, their minds.

You know, they should've done a spin off series of SatAM, but around Knuckles instead. Since Archie was the closest match to SatAM, then I feel that Knuckles should basically follow his comic series what with exploring his origins, the Dark Legion, etc.

*Not exactly. Sonic was comfortable being Sally's hero at the End of doomsday, and because of that he didn't need to have adventures if it comprimised her. It is very different in Archie. Sonic is very into heroics, and is more like SoJ's Sonic than he is of the traditional SoA versions of Sonic placed in SatAM.
*Bunnie wasn't a childhood friend in Archie
*Robotnik didn't become Ixus' lackey like he would've in season 3. They simply got "Eggman" as his replacement and have worked from there.
*The comic had been influenced by games the SatAM chose not to adapt.
Certain ideas for the futures as said by the creatives of the show, as well as the differences in charachterization, and what was/wasn't adapted showes that the comic wouldn't be SatAM in the future.
Except of course that the entire setting has changed in drastic ways. A cartoon series, especially a generic DiC Game Adaption Series NEVER changes. It always keeps to a certain status quo, even if SatAM series 3 would have started with Naugus and Snively, Robotnik would have come back and there'd still be Knothole versus Robotropolis.
I'll give SatAM ONE thing, it did have some continuity between seasons with the whole Uncle Chuck thing and that was pretty danged cool for it's time (ignoring the timing being the same when Disney worked out kids could handle continuity)
If there were gradual changes which could be made over time, I doubt we'd get to the point where village Knothole became Treehouse Kingdom Knothole. The whole character system of SatAM, the royals, Angel Island, Station Square.
None of it would work in the cartoon. It was it's own self contained universe and has been drastically different from the comic even since the ancient days of Bunnie the Hairdresser in the dirt kingdom of Knothole.
Archie is a fusion between the three Jaleel White cartoons, Sega and the Knuckles series. I count the Knuckles series as it's own entity because it created a whole new Knuckles lore which the main comic is now forced to conform to (or just happens to grateuateously reference every time Kenders Suprise picks up a pen and puts echidnas into every damn story).
It's best not to try and take any of the seperate parts away from the others, the comic BARELY holds together in that fusion and is SO begging for a Crisis on Infinite Earths to sort out the garbled mess it's made of itself (or enough reader caution to ignore the past ;p)
