Because it is mother's day, and because I felt this board needed some action, I decided to post my thoughts on the mothers in the Sonic comic. Feel free to post yours.
Bernie(Sonic's Mother): From what I have seen of Bernie, I think Sonic has inherited much of her personality; a inner strength and bravery(to the point of being brash), as seen in the "Tales of the Great War" series. She probably was one of the first, if not the first, Mobians to confront Robotnik to his face. Although she has mellowed a bit because of her expierences and, like her husband, as a difficult time communicating with Sonic, one can tell she does love him.
Lara(Knux's Mother): I do think she is a good creature at heart. I have to tread carefully on this, so as not to break the relationship rule, but even though Locke has responsiblity for what happend between them, I think Lara made a mistake, which has hurt Knux in a bad way. No wonder he feels the way he does about certain things. I wonder like to see more interaction beweteen Lara and Knux, especially since Locke is gone.
Rosemary(Tails' Mother): Since she has came back, she has been a loving mother to Tails. She also has proved to be more outspoken and daring then I thought she could be, as shown during "House of Cards." I never would have taken her as someone who would speak out/write about potitics until that storyline.
Alica(Sally and Elias' Mother): She has turned out to be a complex creture, can be kind and loves her children, but makes mistakes. The way I see things, she shares blame for what happend to Sally in "Line of Sucession." Alica has come accross as somewhat arrongant(I am thinking of her "Let Robotnik keep that dirty city to himself" line). Not to sound too harsh, I think her attitude on that came from the fact that she may not have fully understood the full effect of what Robotnik has done and the threat. Also, I think alot of her attitude comes from being royal for so long. That way of life seems to be the only life she has really known, at least for a long time.
Finally, I have to say something about the Freedom Fighters foster mothers, Rosie and Julaya. I think they did a great job raising them under hard circumstances. It is because of them, that they have turn out as well as they did.
i honestly thought that alicia had a very un-complex character. like elias, she was just kind of slapped in there. unlike elias, she wasn't given any characterization really.
Finally, I have to say something about the Freedom Fighters foster mothers, Rosie and Julaya. I think they did a great job raising them under hard circumstances. It is because of them, that they have turn out as well as they did.
They turned out AWESOME.
Oh Psxphile. I would love to build you a shine in honor of your Awesome!
Second:
I think Lara made a mistake, which has hurt Knux in a bad way.
What mistake did she make, exactly. I mean what was she supposed to do when the father of her son was not in the picture for most of Knuckles life?
Some people consider it a mistake that Lara didn't try to patch things up with Locke. That she jumped into another's arms a little too soon, ultimately "breaking" the family. And Mr. Penders was faulted for introducing a little modern reality into a fantasy setting where, some felt, it didn't belong.
Something like that?
... THOSE DASTARDLY DEVILS! >:0
EDIT: I hope you all know that Locke was a dead beat Dad. XD
Thanks a lot Psxphile, for reminding me about that. I didn't say the Freedom Fighters were perfect. Still, wish Archie didn't have Sally slap Sonic, I hate that piece of anti-Sally proganda. Some would blame Sally's parents for her getting messed up, along with the pressures that came with her parents returning. Sally likely would have been better off if her parents never came back.
As for Lara, I believe her agument with Locke was that she wasn't having that much input in Knux life. From what I remember, she didn't really know what Locke was doing to Knux at the time(and maybe still doesn't know everything). Even though it would have been hard, in her situation I think it would have probably been better to not walk away from the marriage, let Locke have his way for the sake of the family, and hope and pray that Locke would eventually give some. Perphas(we can't know for sure) she could have stopped things from getting worse if she stayed, because she didn't see Knux at all for a while after the divorce. Also, I think Locke abandoned Knux after the divorce.
The main problem I had with Ken's, and Karl too, writing is that he did write relationships too realistically, which is not to my taste. It was more than just the fact that Ken was bring in a modern issue in the comic that some fans had a problem with how Locke and Lara's relationship was written, some fans have moral objections to divorce. Personally, I don't believe in divorce except in certain circumstanances. I hope I haven't crossed the line with the relationship rule.

"No... he's too dedicated! He won't let me see him. He has seen to it that my son has as little contact with me as possible. And no matter what I say or do my husband will not allow me to visit. "Aurora, I have to be honest. Your husband? He doesn't sound like such a bad guy, really. He's completely focused on the boy, which is more than I can say for some other fathers out there. If you can get some kind of dialog going... "

Anti-Sally propaganda? So it is anti Sally for the writers to have her express some feelings and emotion over everything that has happened and been heaped upon her in life, toward a supposed (and yes certainly proved time and time again...) hero whom had been missing for a year, leaving all his closest freinds in the lurch? I think the little boy blue needed a good old slap personally.
Sonic needed slapping way before Sally did it.
As for Locke and Lara-Le, Knuckles was the only innocent in that situation. Locke was too overbearing, and Lara-Le let Locke walk over her. I don't care what the status quo is for a Guardian's wife, but if I were Lara, I'd demand that I got an equal amount of time with my son and keep hounding him about it until he relented.
You know, speaking of Sonic mothers, there is one I would like to have seen more of: Mari-Su, Julie-Su's mother. She and Luger were in a single issue, for crying out loud; I don't care if it was a special. It would also have been interesting to see more of Merin-Da, but still, Mari-Su is a big one. Sadly, she's dead, and I seriously doubt she'll be so much as mentioned again.
Man I can't WAIT for the Father's Day post! XDXD
What? No love for Vanilla? The 28 year-old with old fashioned sensibilities? She groomed her daughter into a very polite child. Her only flaw is her old lady voice she has on Sonic X. She's 28 going on 98.
I am not saying it was wrong for Sally to show emotion, I just thought the slap overdid it and just gave anti-Sally fans more fuel to hate her.
I disagree. As someone who's flagrantly anti-Sally most of the time, seeing her realistically portrayed as a hormonal teenager who's been psychologically screwed over for years and finally snapping - as opposed to seeing her flirt, smarm, Nicole and generally all-'round Mary-Sue her way out of everything falling apart around her ears without even getting her hair mussed up, let alone her face cracking - actually sent the way that she was written up in my estimation. Ditto seeing her finally growing up enough to figure out that they were both in the wrong, rather than sit around being holier than thou whilst everyone else made excuses about what a martyr she was, or needing to be lectured - hence I was disappointed when Ian reset the dynamic back to the two of them smartmouthing each other.
Seeing a character show realistic emotion isn't something that I think should be used as ammo.
Some people consider it a mistake that Lara didn't try to patch things up with Locke. That she jumped into another's arms a little too soon, ultimately "breaking" the family.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but she remarried years after she & Locke split up. How long do they think she should've waited? And how would she patch things up when he wasn't letting her have a say in raising Knuckles, which means it's him who needs to do the patching (unless she was going to suddenly be fine with having no say)?
Sonic 06 was two years ago, but for Sally it still hurts.
I just thought the slap overdid it and just gave anti-Sally fans more fuel to hate her.
I dunno, it made me start liking her.
Course, I like Garth Ennis characters...

If it was up to the Bible-thumpers they'd never have been divorced in the first place. But to answer your question (or rather, tip-toe around it)... I had forgotten about the time-frame surrounding her leaving and when she meets hubby #2 (whose name escapes me right at the mo ... starts with a 'W'). Of course, my original statement was just that: a statement, and not my own personal opinion. There was one girlie, in particular, who was most adamant about the whole situation being absolutely wrong and Ken should fix it right NOW!!11!! or something to that effect.
And how would she patch things up when he wasn't letting her have a say in raising Knuckles, which means it's him who needs to do the patching (unless she was going to suddenly be fine with having no say)?
Dunno. I do recall Locke having a go at it at one point, but Lara didn't reciprocate. Which was just fine, but there were those who felt she dropped the ball.
Water under the bridge, now.
Psx: Her current husband's name is Wynmacher
I hope you all know that Locke was a dead beat Dad. XD
I'd disagree with that assessment unless every single Guardian is considered the same (or in Janelle-Li's case a "deadbeat mom") starting with the Rembrandt/Jordan father/son generation.
[it] just gave anti-Sally fans more fuel to hate her.
Who cares? Seriously. People will hate whoever they chose for whatever reason(s) they chose. There's no reason to care about "why" some person may hate a character. I understand debating or setting the record straight on misinformation. However, caring that someone is going to use an action by a character to dislike that character is a waste of time. Now, if you have a problem with something because it upsets what you like to see--that's totally different and makes sense. Unless you're on some impossible quest to have everyone like the same things you do, I really don't think "ammo" is the real reason why you didn't like the slap. I think that you just didn't like it. That's your right.
I hope you all know that Locke was a dead beat Dad. XD
I'd disagree with that assessment unless every single Guardian is considered the same (or in Janelle-Li's case a "deadbeat mom") starting with the Rembrandt/Jordan father/son generation.
If you're referring to Knuckles #25, from what I read, I don't think Rembrandt intended for the training to be like it currently is. I read it as the current Guardian starting off with basic information about being a Guardian and then, as the child got older, more and more about the Guardianship would be revealed. Considering how broken up he was after Aaron was killed, I just can't see Rembrandt just up and leaving the only other son he had. I think the original plan got screwed up somewhere down the line.
It depends on what you mean by "left."
With Rembrandt and Jordan, one of the main reasons it wasn't exactly the way it was for say Locke/Knuckles was because Echidnaopolis wasn't on the Floating Island when it was Locke/Knuckles turn while it was on the Floating Island when Rembrandt/Jordan were doing their thing. Also, Rembrandt didn't train Jordan for the position until Jordan was much older whereas most of the others started training once they could walk and talk. Locke wasn't kidding when he said he was following tradition. Athair told us how Janelle-Li "left" him exactly the same way Locke "left" Knuckles. Sabre "left" Locke the same way. The only reason Athair didn't eventually end up leaving Sabre was due to Athair becoming Mitre. The specific generation where the second change occured isn't known, but happened most likely once the Floating Island was "fixed" but it was not possible to move Echidnaopolis back to the Floating Island. While I have no idea what Rembrandt thought about the "change," it's obvious that the majority of those living did want it the way it became (just as a majority wanted the original change even though there was dissent). The only question is which members were alive for the choice and exactly which generation had the second change--though my "bet" is with the Spectre/Thunderhawk/Sojouner generation(s) as father/son.
Personally, I still don't consider it a big deal to "leave" a kid that's been trained to fight and in survival skills to their own devices when they're 9 while nearly watching their every move anyway.
I'm fairly certain that by the time it became customary to abandom the child, Rembrandt was already dead by that time.

It's one thing to let them make decisions and stuff on their own, but what the Guardians did was flat out abandonment. You just don't leave a nine-year-old, no matter how skilled he is, to survive on his own without any sort of parental involvement. Maybe echidnas are different, but it's a wonder these kids managed to grow up without having having serious social issues. I can't imagine what I'd be like if my parents had left me when I was nine.
it's a wonder these kids managed to grow up without having having serious social issues.
Such as gullibility, trust issues, and severe xenophobia?
Oh wait....

Bingo. It's a wonder Knuckles was able to establish and maintain the emotional bonds he had with the Chaotix and Julie-Su.
Well, as far as Julie-Su, with the Soul Touch and all, Knux didn't have much choice but to make those bonds, and since Knuckles seems more open then his dad I don't see him and Julie have that big of difference to negate the Soul Touch as apparantly Locke and Lara did.
As far as abandonment and no parental involvement, have you forgotten the entire Brotherhood protecting their own when the threw Monk off Angel Island or when Locke jettisoned the citadel that Enerjak was in or the fact that Archy, as well as the Fire Ant Brotherhood for the other guardians, was a direct representive for Locke and spoke on his behalf despite Knux not knowing this. I mean sure until Knux #25 there may have not been direct involvement but Locke and the entire Brotherhood was watching and protecting Knux from behind the scenes; and while this may have been in part to preserve the Guardian line, they also did it because they, like any parents and grandparents, love Knuckles even if it doesn't seem like it to us.
HAH! Yea, I remember the brotherhood throwing the big, bad bully off of the island, practically murdering a troubled youth.
I'm fairly certain that by the time it became customary to abandom the child, Rembrandt was already dead by that time.
Considering every Guardian from Hawking to Locke with the exception of Janelle-Li was still alive until fairly recently, I think Rembrandt might've been alive for the switch as I don't think the second switch happened too many generations after Rembrandt/Jordan. But that's just my hunch. If he wasn't, I'd say Jordan definitely was.
I'm a part of the camp that doesn't see what the Brotherhood did as abandonment at all. Abandoning someone requires a complete lack of support and that wasn't the case with any of the Guardians. I'm not big on the necessity of a physical presence to show that you care or support someone. There are many ways to do that. I'd only be upset with what the Guardians did if they didn't prepare the 9 year old for what was necessary to survive--and that they did.
Oh, they all had social issues, but that comes from being raised alone for years without social interaction. That's nearly unavoidable. It just didn't matter in the long run because they all 1) have the "soul touch" and 2) are afforded societal perks due to their job description in Echidnaopolis. However, I don't think Knuckles suffered from xenophobia because he wouldn't have gone along with Robotnik at first if that was his problem nor have ever considered the Chaotix his friends. He was shown to be friends with Vector long before the Chaotix (as a group) was introduced in the comic. This was before Espio's and Mighty's past in terms of how they each became friends with Knuckles was mentioned (as well as how Knux and Vec met). I'm not even sure Knuckles had real trust issues. I think he took people at their word based on who he met first, which made him completely susceptible to anyone who would take advantage of that. I considered some of the reasons Knuckles and Sonic had so many issues to start was because 1) Knuckles' gullibility caused him to trust Robotnik when he shouldn't have, 2) Knuckles hated himself for being tricked like that so Sonic had to be "bad" to make himself feel better, and 3) Sonic contributed to it by being annoying to Knuckles more than necessary.
In keeping with the story, other than what happened with Sonic and company with regards to their parents/families, there weren't many ways to allow for Knuckles to be "alone" without making him an orphan. Personally, I'm tired of seeing orphans in fiction and I liked this take immensely.
HAH! Yea, I remember the brotherhood throwing the big, bad bully off of the island, practically murdering a troubled youth.
Heehee, that was one of those "yes!" moments (brought back memories of dealing with bullies in elementary school) though ethically that was so wrong. But one of reasons I loved the Knuckles series so much was the way the line was blurred between "good" and "evil" with technically no one being able to truly raise the flag of being one or the other. ^_^
Discussion has swerved in an interesting direction, and immediately reminded me of this.
Oh yeah, I remember that story. I remember thinking "cool mom" when I heard about it the first time.

I can guarantee you, if the kid had been abducted, she probably would've never seen him again. Why would anyone take such a risk, especially in this day and age?
It wasn't much of a risk. Manhattan is safe, especially the subway during the daytime. Unless the kid is still struggling with fantasy vs. reality (which some still are at that age unfortunately) or isn't able to read a map, the kid would be fine. It was the equivalent of kids riding their bikes or walking about 1 mile from their home in the suburbs (or riding the public bus--not school bus--as that's also an option where I live).
A 9 year old = a 4th/5th grader to me. By that point, a kid should have enough sense to do some things, such as get home based on the main mode(s) of transportation available to him/her, on their own.
Obviously, if someone lived in a more violent area, then 9 might be too young. NYC isn't a dangerous place at all, other than very select areas.
