Surprisingly, Sally was based on a game character with a whole lot of artistic license. Sally was the American name of the squirrels rescued by Sonic in the Genesis games. sonichq.mobiusforum.net/newsite/cartoon/before/
I think the reason that Sally is controversial is because you've got 2 fandoms thrown into the mix together. The Mario and Captain N shows were marketing and I doubt they have much of a non-gamer fanbase. Zelda I'd bet is about the same, but probably has some camp fans too. There are SatAM fans who had never played Sonic before and in some cases still haven't done so much.
Kind of like if Star Trek and Star Wars were somehow the same license and their online communities always had to be mixed, you'd end up with a lot of different opinions on them. Star Trek is about sci-fi and moral questions and Star Wars is about fantasy and storytelling archetypes. The series have genre similarities but work on completely different levels. SEGA Sonic and SatAM don't even have genre similarity... just some crossover characters. Or actually, just going on Star Trek, I bet I could set off quite the forum bomb by going to a Star Trek board and asking TOS vs. TNG vs. DS9. 😛
The other thing is that the other 3 gaming shows were very non-serious, while SatAM took itself (mostly) seriously and many SatAM fans even more so. This naturally makes a character more controversial than a character on a camp show, especially when people doing the praising do so in the same place where a lot of people who didn't like the show can also be found. I was one of a lot of Sonic fans who was excited about a cartoon in 1993 and then saw that it had virtually none of the qualities that made me a fan, and was even a polar opposite in a lot of them (art style being one of the main things).

And I counter by saying that in all honesty, Sonic is a cardboard hero whose antics would have grown trite before Sonic & Knuckles, so he needs a small, but strong, well-developed supporting cast
The selling point of the games is the high-speed gameplay - the plot and Sonic's characterisation are nice optional extras but they don't actually matter as you can have a good game without them (see the older ones).
You may have a good game without them, but can't have a good TV series without them. You need character development to tell stories, which the games really don't.
Indeed, but in that specific quote he was talking about the games.
I read his statement as the series and characters would have to differ from those in the games because of the fact that Sonic's character had no depth or real personality in the franchise and, therefore, needed to be altered slightly and surrounded by a supporting cast (hence Sally and the Freedom Fighters).
off-Topic Feeling a bit better. Had a dog funereal which some may find odd but it relieves stress so well, there it is.
Brian- you are absolutely right that the Zelda/Mario game fans are way more forgiving of the cartoons. I have no idea why this tho it might have to do with the nature of the games. They are used to have a bunch of titles with different canon (a Zelda fan once told me that there are a whole bunch of heroes that happen to be named Link so it's always the same guy running around in green stockings), whereas Sonic fans typically want one storyline to be the "real" thing and don't accept others. Archie comics have tried to incorporate parts of all the different fandoms and meets with criticsim. It was a bit easier when Sonic was new (and even then the RP groups and the games-only were starting to square off) but today the fans are so divided you'll never get everyone to agree on Sonic's world and who should be in it. Lucky you seem to realize the diff'rence between angry jabberings and valid points, it will serve you well in fandom debates.
Again, sorry I snapped at you and Hiro. I try to keep real world problems away from the forums an should never have treated y'all like that. Here's to better days for all.
I was talking about both the games and the cartoons. The plots can't just live and die on "Sonic vs. Eggman". That would grow trite before too long. In SatAM and again with the two SA games, the story brought in multiple characters which each had something to contribute.
I've already order mine from job's (Walmart) website during my one-hour lunch and together it only cost me, are you ready for this, $22.36 USD, that's it, and here I have the the description from the site and the link as well, then tell what epsiodes are on what discs:

"Sonic The Hedgehog" (voiced by 'Family Matters' Jaleel White), super fast and irreverent, leads a group of freedom fighters bent on restoring their planet's beauty and freeing its citizens from the tyranny of the evil Dr. Robotnik. The fusion of powerful storylines, witty banter and a dark atmosphere made "Sonic The Hedgehog" - dubbed Sat AM by its legions of fans - a favorite among youngsters and teens when it premiered on ABC in 1993. Inspired by the phenomenon that took the gaming world by storm, "Sonic The Hedgehog" likewise broke through the barriers of what was expected of a Saturday morning cartoon. Now all 26 episodes are available in this action-packed collectors box set, along with awesome bonus features! Season One: Disc 1 - "Heads Or Tails (Pilot)," "Sonic Boom," "Sonic & Sally," "Ultra Sonic," "Sonic & The Secret Scrolls," "Super Sonic," and "Sonic Racer" Season One: Disc 2 - "Harmonic Sonic," "Hooked On Sonics," "Sonic's Nightmare," "Warp Sonic," "Sub-Sonic" and "Sonic Past Cool" Season Two: Disc 3 - "Game Guy," "Sonic Conversion," "No Brainer," "Blast To The Past (Part 1)," "Blast To The Past (Part 2)," "Fed Up With Antoine/Ghost Busted" and "Dulcy" Season Two: Disc 4 - "The Void," "The Odd Couple/Ro-Becca," "Cry Of The Wolf," "Drood Henge," "Spyhog" and "The Doomsday Project".

OMG it has shipped according to Amazon.com...
"Estimated Arrival:         April 6, 2007"
=... I had better get it by the end of the week... Or I will be going on what the movie advertisements refer to as a roaring rampage of revenge... I will ROAR and I will RAMPAGE and I will get BLOODY SATISFACTION!
Damn, I am very excited :3
Edit: You know what? Forget it. Strong language, nudity (though tasteful)... I'm not linking to that!
*ahem* Anyway, ChattheCartoonNut has snaps of the various artworks in the DVD box set up on his deviantArt site WHICH I WILL NOT BE LINKING TO DIRECTLY FOR MILDLY EMBARRASSING REASONS. Which is a shame.
Well I won't have to look far, cause it will be at my store where I work as Unloader (Wal-Mart) here in Lawrence, KS, and tonight guess What I saw in one of the DVD boxes in the electronics bins in the backroom area hwhile I was working:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmOZfpCH_Rk (Sorry if Video is dark, backroom has dim lighting)
And I held in my hands for a moment, something told me it was there, it's like I felt it's persence.
And on Monday at Midnight, I will get it!
PSXphile thanks for the pics.
I LOVE the fanart!! It just goes to show how well the Sonic fandom is connected to it's products. (Well, outside of the games, where SOJ doesn't give a !@#$ about us.) From the fact that we can converse with the writers and artists of the comics on a daily basis, to the fact that the fans get to have thier art all over the Sonic DVD's show how strong, and repected our fanbase is.
It's a great time to be a Sonic fan.
Unless you're me, and don't like SatAM, then it's just like every other day. =p
Toby, I was talking more about having the fan art all over the DVD's, and the enourmous amount of interaction, and communication Sonic fans are able to have with the comic as well. Most fan bases don't get to have so much direct input on the product.

Sweet, a Wal-Mart in Kansas is going to carry the set? That increases the chances of a Wal-Mart in Missouri carrying it.
And here I figured only the big stores like Best Buy would bother to carry it.
Wal-Mart isn't a big store? ._.
Eh, I mean big-time DVD retailers...or something...for lack of a better term...
I highly doubt that our Wal-Mart would carry a semi-obscure show from the early 90's, but there's always hope.
Hm. Looking over the pics again, I can see Knuckles and Nack managed to sneak onto the fanarts despite never having been on the show.
Someone might get the wrong idea.
Target here carries ShoutFactory's other DVDs, such as the Super Mario Show... and btw, Walmart is a pretty big seller of DVDs, if I'm not mistaken.
Oh,man, Knux and Nack did sneak into the fan art pieces...I can just imagine the complaint topics from the youngling fans who bought the boxset out of curiosity..."WTF! There are pictures of Knuckles and Nack on the casing! So why aren't they in the series?!"
Young people? You silly, young people won't be buying SatAM. =p
Fortunately, they appear inside the cases, so impulse buyers won't be confused...
Well I just got mine about 40 mintues ago, and with my job's discount, Got it for $19.27, and was grinning and smiling all the way home , I will post vids and pics real soon!
Young people? You silly, young people won't be buying SatAM. =p
Sorry...their parents would be buying it. I'm referring to the generation of Sonicheads whose first Sonic game was SA2: B, and those who watch Sonic X. They'll see the boxset on shelves with Sonic on the cover, and get it. They'll see Knux on the inside cover and expect to see him in the episodes, and be sorely disappointed upon discovering his absence.
For anyone who's interested, here's an interview with Brian Ward about his involvement with the boxset. I figure reading it will ease the tension a little for those of us, like me, still playing the waiting game:
Here's the vids and pics I promised, sorry if 2nd vid is dark, it was shot outside, I was off work at 10pm central time, and had a McD's While I waited, and this set was the worth the wait, cause it's that DAMN GOOOOOOOODDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!:

The artwork with disc 1 and 2 looks cool. Can you take a better picture of it? The flash seem to block the right side of it.
I picked up a copy of the SATam DVD bonus set today...But it's going to be a birthday present from my folks next month...So I can only drool over the box right now.
I'm kind of thinking, it'd be fun to have some friends over and watch a marathon of like the last four episodes or Blast to the Past Pts. I and II, maybe all six, who knows. Me likes a the idea.
And the back of the box picture with Sonic holding the ring and sticking his tongue out in concentratoin is just perfect! And In looking at people's scans of the artwork, I noticed Knuckles managed to sneak into a picture despite his non-presence on SatAM. Whee!
Yeah, Knux and Nack snuck their way into the art... Frankly, I'm disappointed with the box's cover art... IMO the are on the inside of case one, bottom right would have been perfect... That or a finished version of case two's inside top middle... Can't really complain too much, since I'm really just happy to have this discs in my hands!
Thank you to Shout Factory for getting the most treasured TV series of my childhood onto DVD!
Nack is also there.
Hey BW1979, looks like I'm not the only Sonic geek that works at Wal-Mart.
My Wal-Mart continues its track record as most disappointing Wal-Mart in the nation. Of course, they didn't have it. Gonna have to pick it up at Best Buy tomorrow. =(
Yay @ supporting a Minnesota company
*waves Best Buy and Target flags*
Psx got it right. I love FM.
In any event, I picked it up today cause my wonderful life made it so. Its sunny in NYC-I didnt have to work today... and bought it for me for my own B-day {awesome day so far.}
I'll post a pic tonight-complete with Sonic shirt for the envious.
Crap, the Wal-Mart in Lawrence has it? I bypassed it and got it at Hastings because Wal-Mart NEVER has any of the DVDs I want unless it's some Blockbuster or something. Dang, how much do they cost there?
With my discount, about $19.27, but without, about $21.27, if you think about it. And I work as unloader, Shigamado, what do work as?
Welp, I traveled a little farther than I had to just to spend about 5 bucks more. Ah well, it was worth it either way. Ya'll can get back on topic now.
I just got back from work. (I work in the Sporting Goods department BTW.) I got to work early to pick up the Sonic DVD before I started. Unfortunatly they didn't have a single @#$%'in copy in stock!! :"> :"> :"> :"> :"> :"> :"> :"> :"> :"> :"> :">
There was a spot for it, but it was either sold out or they hadn't recieved it yet. Guess I'll have to check Best Buy or Fry's tomorrow.
Would anyone like to look at the sale figures at Amazon? I think they are pretty good. But you should see for yourself and make your own opinion.
Here is the address: Sonic the Hedgehog
Finally found a Best Buy with a few copies. ($26.99 vs. my Wal-Marts $19.96 GRRR) Also got my 360 back from the repair shop. (yay.) Too bad I have to go to work, so I don't have time to watch any episodes. (Or play some more Crackdown.)
BTW a Mario and Sonic game has been confirmed! Check Kotaku.

Geez, who regulates these things? Haven't they ever heard of MSRP?
EDIT: Toon Zone interviews Brian Ward about Sonic The Hedgehog DVD.
Good read.
Hey all,
I myself just got mine yesterday, and lets just say its been a Sonic marathon since. I'm so happy the set came out, its about time!
I did a 7-part video reivew and sneek peek of the set for those that have it and yet don't have it, and I did find all 4 easter eggs, on disc 1 & 2, just move to the left, and one of the yellow buttons will glow green and on Disc 3 & 4, just scroll down the main menu and the bottom top black button will glow green as well, anyway here is that 7-part video review and sneek peek I mentioned, find it here:
Tell me if this helps and what you think.
Sure SHADSONIC, how this:
