SONIC THE HEDGEHOG GETS ARCHIVE SERIES

Press Release

In 1993, Sonic the Hedgehog sped his way from video games to comic books. Almost 200 issues later, "the blue blur" can lay claim to having the most successful comic book career of all video game heroes! Now you can travel back in time to where it all began in SONIC THE HEDGEHOG ARCHIVES, a thrilling series of upscale reprints that lets you revisit Sonics early days in a premium yet affordable format. These special 5 x 7 & inch editions contain 112 action-packed pages, faithfully re-colored and printed on superior stock, with a low cover price of only $7.49 US!

Picking up where the SONIC THE HEDGEHOG: THE BEGINNING trade paperback left off (which reprinted the original Sonic mini-series issues #0 through #3), SONIC THE HEDGEHOG ARCHIVES #1 ships in November and dives right into the action, starting with the first issue of Sonics ongoing comic book series all the way up through issue #4. Following on its heels in December is SONIC THE HEDGEHOG ARCHIVES #2, representing issues #5 through #8.

In SONIC THE HEDGEHOG ARCHIVES #1, fans will thrill to these classic tales:

You Bet My Life (issue #1): The odds are against Sonic when he crashes the Casino Night Zone only to face the dreaded Orbinaut!
Triple Trouble (issue #2): The terrible trio of Coconuts, Scratch and Grounder ruin a perfectly fine day for Sonic and Tails!

The Bomb Bugs Me (issue #3): Its an intriguing series of subterfuges and dastardly disguises and a surprise ending, too!
Rabbot Deployment (issue #3): The first comic book appearance of Bunnie Rabbot!
Lizard of Odd (issue #4): The first comic story to feature Super Sonic and just in time, as the deadly Universalamander threatens everything in sight!

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG ARCHIVES #2 features more classic laughs & action:

Olympic Trials & Error (issue #5): Robotnik issues an Olympic challenge to the Freedom Fighters. At stake: the restoration of Mobius, or complete Roboticization!
Chomp on This, Chump! (issue #5): Introducing the Termite-nator, an ever-growing consumer of wood which isnt so good if you live in Knothole Village!
The Spin Doctor (issue #6): the action-packed adaptation of Segas Sonic Spinball video game!
Sonics Christmas Carol (issue #6): The timeless tale is transported to Mobius, complete with curmudgeonly Robotnik as Scrooge!
Uncle Chucks Treasure (issue #7): The Freedom Fighters find an old map belonging to Uncle Chuck, and it just may hold the key to defeating Robotnik forever!
Sorceress in Distress (issue #7): Sally goes to the Great Forest in search of a suitable wooden staff to complete her Halloween Sorceress costume. When Robotnik comes upon her, he believes Sally to be a real sorceress and kidnaps her with the intention of marrying her!
Bots All Folks! (issue #8) : Jealous that one of his lackeys is a closet fan of Sonic, Robotnik unleashes his fury with new ruthless robots to attack the blue blur!
A Little Music Goes a Long Way (issue #8) : All Sonic and his friends want to do is make beautiful music, but a certain robotic meanie has other ideasnamely shrinking the mirthful music makers!

Finally!

Archie were asking for opinions on this back when I first got online in mid-1998. Glad to see that they're making life easier for back issue hunters - although since the target demographic is now younger than the comic itself, it was going to become a critical issue sooner rather than later. 🙂

That's pretty nice...I wonder if they'll include like the Tails/Sally mini series in one of these as well? I hope so.

This is definitely great for those who have never been able to read the old issues. However, since I already have the old issues comprising these paperbacks, I probably won't pick these up. I was rather disappointed that "The Beginnings" only featured the big stories and not the little one-page ones. Believe it or not, I also rather enjoy the fan art and Sonic Grams, as well. I doubt they'd be included in these new collections, but if they by chance are...I'm sold.

So these will be in the appearance of manga books, right? I'm definitely getting it.

It was about time however I dissapointed that they only included 4 issues instead of 5 or 6. I might pick it up since I dont have the first 19 issues.

So how's everyone expecting the formatting of these to go? It'd be nice if they were able to collect the related storylines all together - for example, "Growing Pains" from #28 and #29 in the same TPB as Tails #1-#3; or the Knuckles backups from the Chaotix special and #31-#36 alongside the first Knux mini-series.

I was thinking about the same thing, Matt. I think I'd prefer the stories in a more continuity order than issue/release order. Of course, continuity doesn't really apply too much to the stories in the first few graphic novels.

I doubt that they'll do it based on "continuity." I think it'll be issue-based. The only things from the "early days" that I'm interested in getting are the Sally mini-series and possibly Sonic #25.

This is exactly what i need to complete my collection since i only need like 14 comics or so... and Red I agree with ya on the sally mini series, I can't seem to find it anywhere and its way too frustrating to bid on ebay and whatnot...oh, you mentioned sonic 25? i have 2 extras of that comic I believe. Although, this isnt exactly the right part of the forum to discuss buying and selling comics but if you would want one of my extras id be happy to sell it to ya.

My copy of Sonic Archives #1 arrived in the mail today. I was surprised how small it was... I guess the announcement said they'd be this size but I hadn't been paying attention.

The paper really is high-quality, glossy stuff. The recolors look really cool, and they remain accurate to the original colors (even the mistaken Sally coloring).

The cover is excellent, and I see the cover for next volume is just as cool.

I started reading the comic at issue 48, so most of this material is new to me (aside from what was in "Sonic Firsts"). It has its charming points, and it's cool to see how far the book has come. I know I'll be buying these as long as they keep making them.

I only hope they get creative with the arrangement of the stories, instead of the lazy and confusing method of keeping them chronological. Like what Matt said.

I'm hoping the same.

The first volume sounds nice. I'll pick it up if the comic store I go to gets it.

Dirk, roughly how much did it cost you to get your hands on this?

That and does anyone know if they're planning to produce more archive TPBs?

You can pick t hem up at the Archie website (as I did) or at your local retailer. Either way, expect to pay $7.50. A pretty good deal if you don't already have these issues.

As far as future TPBs, they haven't announced past #2, but I'm guessing if these are a success, then there will be more.

I picked up #1 yesterday. The overall quality of the format's not so bad (I wonder how long it'll be before they're using cheaper paper), but the overall quality of some of the later issues may suffer when some of the illustrations have to be shrunk down.

Yeah, I just read archives #1 & #2. I was excited, especially with the digital reprinting. It was good. I hope they go beyond the 2 archives. Overall, I liked it very much, it was nice taking a trip down memory lane.

I just got my Sonic Archive 1 in the mail today from Amazon.

First off the size of the book is fairly tiny to its predecessor, "Sonic Beginnings." Its a pocket size paperback graphic novel. (I almost think its a little too small. My eyes aren't what they used to be.)

Also, its true that the pages were all recolored. However, I do argue that they ARE a lot different from the originals. The old ones were a nice flat color scheme and highly saturated. The new pages are a little dark to my taste. The reason behind this is because it looks as if the colorist went a little crazy with the dodge and burn tool, and I mean that in a bad way. (Only using white and black to shade? Not good.)

I'm happy that Archie is coming out with the old issues all over again, but if they are going to look like this in print at LEAST keep the original coloring and save my eyes. I also would like to see the format printed in a BIGGER size for later issues that will be released. At least put it in the original comic book size format. Tokyopop prints it bigger than that. =P

I've also got Sonic Begins and Sonic archive volume 1 and 2, and when i put them next to each other, it kind've bothers me that the last two are soooo tiny. I just wish they were alittle bigger, so they could stand out more in my collection, like my sonic begins trade paperback does. Also, are you sure they're going to make more sonic archives? :idea I'm asking this because when i looked at the advertisment page at the end of archive vol. 2, i noticed that it didn't advertise that there was going to be a sonic archive vol. 3, they just advertised the archives before it, so i'm kind've worried that they aren't gonna make anymore archives of sonic. :(

When does things start geting serious?

I don't meen that in an insulting sence, I just want to know when to start picking it up. The Start-Up Era was er...sorta boring to be honest.

Depends on your definition of boring. Personally, I prefer the light hearted stories of the early issues to the melodramatic junk that plagues the comic nowadays.

Things start to pick up in seriousness sometime around issue 30, if I recall correctly. I haven't read all of the earlier issues, but I'm pretty sure that's the case.

Yeah, Hedgeman has a point about whether or not they will be continuing the volumes on Sonic. My guess is probably not for awhile until they (Archie, Sega, etc.) decides it should go on. I was also wondering that. I think they should because there is no way really to read the back issues because it is quite difficult to find any of the first & older issues.

Anyway, I hope they continue sometime soon down the road, even though I agree on the format such as the size & digital coloring, I still enjoyed the stories.

Due to the space of pages, it would seem most unlikely they could also put the sonic gram pages from the issues into the book also, it would be neat, but mostly impossible, only time will tell, i guess.

well, if you look at the post above yours, you'll see it's a moot point. Apparently, StH #171 advertises the next two archives, although I haven't gotten the issue yet so I'm not sure of any details.

I've only picked up the first one, and it looks great. I am sincerely looking forward to further reprints since Im missing a few issues here and there. I hope they release the Super Specials in the same way since some of my favorite storyline exist in them. The only problem I find if Archie does reprint the Specials, will it be as a separate archive or included with the other issues (Like printing issue 39, the Mecha Madness Special, and issue 40 in a single volume)?

Out of the first eight issues, I only have #1 and #7. #7 does have a letters page, but I'm not sure if the rest did.

I'm thinking myself that the digests could do with being a bity larger. That way, we could get to the slightly meatier stuff a little faster, and not risk Archie thinking that the whole format was a bad idea just because people don't want to read about the likes of Rotor's Auntie Bodies etc, and maybe even get bored keeping the faith with the digests and wander off elsewhere.

This topic is almost a year old. You really didn't need to resurface it to talk about McDonalds.
