I work at a Wal-Mart where we always have Archie digest comics on the front registers as an impulse buy. I thought to myself "how come Archie comics doesn't do the same thing with Sonic?" There are plenty of two=parters, or thre--parters they can re-print. Not to mention the Knucles series, or Tails and Sally mini series. They've got over twelve years worth of material to reprint so why not?

I think these would be profitable, and have made the suggestion in the past. SONIC X would be much better suited to the format than the other comic.

I'd love a digest comic. The more Sonic per month, the better. I've written more than once to Archie suggesting it, and never recieved any sort of reply. I still think it would be a great idea.

It could tie in stories about the freedom fighters, the chaotix, knuckles, and even stories from the Sonic X universe (similar to how the Archie digests include stories about Archie in caveman times, Archie as a kid, and regular Sabrina as well as Sabrina - the animated series style).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought digest comics were various reprints of older comics? That's why I thought it wouldn't take much time, effort or cost to make.

Yeah, they'd have to be reprints.

Time and effort wouldn't be the issue.

Money would probably be the issue. None of us know what their contract with Sega states.

I remember back in the day TMNT reprinted several of their issues in digest format... I'd dig it if Sonic could do the same. Didn't they do something like that with Sonic Firsts? I'm spacing out and have no idea.

Hmmmm... I think TrueRed may be right. Archie's contract with Sega may prevent them from doing a digest.

Correct ME if I'M wrong, but doesn't the term "digest" refer specifically to the size and format, not the content?

I mean, I'm pretty sure that the Archie digests contain entirely new stories each month written specifically for the digests.

On a side note, I'm amazed at how many archie/jughead/b&v stories they can write each month.

That's correct. However, no one knows how Archie's contract with Sega is written. There could be mention of size/format among other issues that boil down to money/profit. Without an idea of that, we're just guessing.

I can't think of why Sega would state size & format in Archie's contract. However, I have noticed Archie seems reluctant to do any reprints of old Sonics- there was the Sonic First's special and one tpb of really old issues, and that's it. Bit of a waste of backlog, really.

Archie could make some money reprinting old issues in TPB form, but I have a feeling the reason they don't want to is because of how much the characters and writing has changed. Some of those early issues are laughably bad in terms of "humor" and "plot" but, while they were fun at the time (when readers like me were around age 6-8) , they lack the "serious tone" that the comic has carried and evolved since around issue 25 and beyond.

Still though, new, short sonic stories in a digest each month is a great idea. I don't know about the rest of you, but some of my favorite stories of the past few years have been "filler" stories like "Caterkiller's Coming" or the solo Knuckles story "patience." Even if it wasn't a digest, and they brought back the "Sonic Super Special" it would be awesome. I loved those when they were out.

What I'm scared of is that if Archie tries to write new content for a digest comic...the quality is going to be crap and the regular series's quality will also go down!

I have the Sonic The Hedgehog beginnings digest. I wish they would do a digest for every year, up until maybe 2000. That's when the comic seemed to start going for the anime style. I don't like anime, I liked American Sonic. The one who is afraid of water, and scarfs down countless numbers of chilidogs.

If they'd just give me the original AoSTH in a DVD boxset I'd be set for life. The recent Sonic games have been underwhelming, save for Sonic Rush, it rules.

"Beginnings" wasn't a digest, it was a Trade Paperback. TPB would be ideal, but we've been asking forever and all we've gotten is "Sonic Firsts" and "Beginnings."

Just the comic panels, with a picture of the issue's cover before each story. No ads, Sonic-Grams, or one-page stories.

When I first got online seven years ago, the Archie web site was asking for opinions on the idea of reprinting the series in TPB format for ease of reference. Nothig seemed to come of it, though.

How was "Beginnings"? Was it an entire reprint of the issues, or was it just the comic panels? (In other words, was it basically the original miniseries wraped in a brand new cover, or was it all the comic panels (no ads, no editorials) thrown together?)
