Wow, they're taking the Sonic Genesis reboot or whatever it is seriously. I wonder how much it will actually represent the games.

I thought it was said that wasn't actually the cover to 226? Bumbleking is down but I think I remember something being said along those lines...

It's Jazware's exhibit at a show. Genesis is some big comic event and may or may not bring the comics closer to the games. That's conjecture.

I hope that it doesn't bring the comics closer to the games. I  like the way the comic is now. We better not lose the Satam, and Archie characters.

Oh, man! This cover is so awesome! It's just like the front cover of Sonic 1 on Sega Genesis.

Really does sound like a reboot. Or a smokescreen.

Or prequel. But that is like a reboot considering what a retcon it would be.

My money's on the timeline being reset after the previous issue. Oh well. The SatAM verse and the Archie comics extension at least had a fun run and a wild ride and in spite of hard times the comic managed to tell a good story.

Seems risky, what with all the world building going on the last two years. I say it's a remake of the Francis Mao comic... because I think that would be comedic.

I would say that it's highly unlikely that they are rebooting the series. It alienates a huge part of the readership (myself included) and destroys Ian's over three years of work on this comic. It's more than likely a soft retcon to how Sonic and Robotnik met.

I really doubt that Archie is going to reset the book's timeline. Plus a reboot would mess up story planes for Sonic Universe.

My theory would be that Eggman's 'master plan' was universe altering - yet, somehow, Sonic manages to fix everything. I feel like I've read this story in X-Men before... or maybe Spider-Man.

Does Sonic make a deal with the devil?

It better not be some temporary elseworlds thing. Even if they keep the Archie characters, at least they can make the landscape cubist and or surreal a la the better games and feature more of the locations.

The story and art potential of some of those locations is massive.

Do you mean a devil who has never before displayed any universe altering abilities, yet somehow can suddenly do so? lulz.

But no, I was thinking of a Mysterio storyline in the 90's, shortly after the clone saga. Flash Thompson, Peter Parker, and Ben Reilly were captured, drugged, and alternate realitie'd into believing Ben was still Spidey, Flash was a super hero, and Peter Parker was a nerdy cripple.

^ Similar theory, here.

Oh lord you had to make me remember that story.

And the clone saga.

And 90's comics in general.

I'm going to go bleach my mind.

(Maybe you were also thinking about the Age of Apocalypse @ X-Men story?)

They kind of have done the Age of Apocalypse thing with Moebius, I would say this seems more like a Superman:Birthright/Man of Steel type thing (hopefully Birthright since that wasn't an outright reboot.)

Could it just be a non-canon miniseries arc, guys?

Quite frankly that makes less sense than a reboot. Why confuse newcomers and fans by making a non-cannon arc instead of just releasing it as a mini?

We should change this topic to Sonic Genesis pre-info thread.

A newsrama preview, containing 227's cover, another Genesis pencil scan, and some info. Obviously contains spoilers so read at own risk.

All I can say is that this is possibly the best thing the comic has ever done and i'm really looking forward to it.

"After that, we'll be picking up where we left off in Sonic the Hedgehog #225," Flynn said, hinting that the premise of "Genesis" will not completely alter the main title's universe. "But there will some serious ramifications, namely the life of one character will hang in the balance."

Meh.

It should do much more. And only one issue per game is so far below its potential. The settings could be used so many ways.

The newsarama article makes it sound like a reboot or at least a continuity simplification but it sounds more like just another alternate reality arc like the suppression squad issues.

The comic could use a continuity cleanup. Consider how convoluted Eggman's history is. He's Julian Kintobor a warlord trained by a human hating warlord who became Robotnik and then got roboticized and took over his world and came to Sonic's world and got blown up and got a new body and then got deroboticized to look like that new body oh and his relatives are named Robotnik somehow and act like they are related and try not to mention the alternate universe nonsense.

I won't even try to understand Knuckles' history.

Or the pointless groups of random regional freedom fighters who include 1 or 2 members at most with any originality.

Or the settings and their histories which I mention primarily because, even if the cast is totally unaffected, the game settings are what I'd like to see most.

Then consider the Penders continuity wars with any other writers.

And how they made Mobius the result of aliens.

Flynn didn't want to indicate what characters might be affected after "Genesis" ends. "Since this is a reboot," he said, "seeing who comes back and how is part of the surprise."

Which suggests maybe it will be more than just an alternate universe. Maybe the cast will be returning as new versions of themselves in a rebooted setting. But it is hard to tell.

While Vector brings up some good points it should be noted that almost none of that history actually needs to be known to understand what Flynn is doing in a given issue of Sonic. While I appreciate their efforts to make it more new reader friendly I still don't get why this needs to happen, that said I'm not expecting it to be much more than a reboot of Sonic and Robotnik's past with each other.

I'll stake $10 it would be great if the covers for Sonic: Genesis parts 3 and 4 became the spoofs of Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles.

It'll sell more as part of the regular series than it would as a mini-series.

I'm wondering if it is not a House of M or Infinite Earths type of reboot but 'Ultimate Sonic:' an experiment for a new series with not so much contrived continuity.

I could maybe go for an Infinite Earths type of reboot...thankfully the Sonic universe hasn't got that convoluted yet.

How was the Ultimate series in Marvel received?

I'm going for House of M-hence my Wanda Maximoff equivalency to this. Ultimates is mixed..but generally a downer.

Ultimates had some good and bad titles. Ultimate 1 and 2 by Millar were fantastic, Ultimate Spider-man is unbelievably amazing and Ultimate X-Men and Fantastic Four were pretty meh. Then it all went terribly downhill with Jeph Leob and his gut wrenchingly terrible Ultimates 3 and Ultimatum.

This does sound more like a House of M alternate universe type dealy for a few issues.

I'm glad that it's only four issues, plus I'm glad that it's not really a reboot. The comic is perfect the way it is.

Darkfox, I'm in the same boat as you. When I heard that there was going to be a major turn after 225, I told myself "if its going where I think its going (and I was thinking reboot), then come 225 I want my subscription to the comic Terminated, Immediately!" After hearing this is only a short run, I've lighten my mood, though I hope Archie knows that I mean what I said about a subscription termination.

Well, in the issue where Eggman actually snapped back into reality, he tells snively that sonic is the embodiment of chaos and evidently knows now how to combat this soooooooo with that in mind.... he may actually be goign to back to original plans to defeat the hedgehog with this new strategy hence...Genesis.... It'd be kind of cool to see Eggman actually win one for once.. any thoughts?

Eggman trying to control Chaos? Yeah we saw that in Iss. 81-84?

No seriously. I dun think he'll win again, more like he'll end up thinking he won, having a few minutes to gloat, before it all comes shattering down, cause you can't stop chaos.

Ah, well I never got a chance to read those . Ya... seems to be how it usually goes... just trying to figure it out, cause I can't imagine them doing a time warp thing where they go back in time. although that seems to be what it looks like from the cover. Either way.. I'm counting down the days for the new one 😛 😛

Could this be the conics's equivalent of "Turtles Forever"? Eggman is trying to wipes out Sonic Prime to get rid of all Sonics.

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG #228
"Genesis" Part Three:
The most talked-about story in Sonic comic history continues as Sonic brings a curious new face into his adventures: Miles Prower, the boy genius! As Sonic and his friends continue the good fight against the evil Dr. Robotnik, the perils get more perilous, old memories begin to resurface, and the Death Egg orbits. Don't miss the penultimate issue to this anniversary special event!
SCRIPT: Ian Flynn

The theory that Sonic and everybody else has been transported into a fake, rebooted dimension seems a bit more plausible to me.
