SONIC THE HEDGEHOG ARCHIVES #9
The thrilling new series that lets fans relive classic Sonic stories continues!
Volume 9 presents issues #33 through #36 of Sonic's ongoing comic book series in a special 5 x 7 & ½ inch edition. These stories continue the artistic change to a more
"dramatic" tone, better aligning the series to the hit Saturday morning animated series then on the air. The emphasis is on the royal politics of the kingdom, with power plays, self-sacrifice and betrayals galore. Each story is meticulously restored and printed on high-grade paper-so you can feel like you're zipping right alongside the cobalt champion as he saves Knothole Village! This action-packed edition features events like the mystery of the Chaos Emeralds and the return of King Acorn (sort of)!
Stories include:
"Let's Get Small" (issue #33),
"The Big Picture" (issue #33),
"Sonic Shot" (issue #33),
"To Bot or Not to Bot" (issue #34),
"A Sense of History - Part One" (issue #34),

now we just need metal versions of shadow, tails, and knuckles and we're set for a new bad guy team.

These are some wonderful covers! Sonic X manages to invoke a legendary piece of Sonic lore, the ball and a chain first boss, and turn it on its head while still looking stunning. Sonic and Scourge standing together make me recall the cover art to Sonic Adventure 2 and the eyes of the metal Sonic/Scourges remind me of the cover to Sonic & Knuckles. Then Sonic Archives # 9 just makes me smile because I was fond of the issue depicted on the cover and I could instantly recognize what it was referring to.

I do wonder about Metal Scourge, though. In the Anti-Mobious Dr. Robotnik was a peaceful veterinarian if I recall correctly. So that kind of makes me wonder who will be the one to invent him. Two-Tails and Boomer, maybe?

I just have to say that this story is getting pretty weak. I mean, come on: first you introduce Evil Sonic as Sonic's evil twin, then you change his color scheme to differentiate him, and now you create a metal duplicate of the former evil twin. There are so many cliches in there I don't even want to comment. As for Metal Scourge's origin, maybe someone on Anti-Mobius built him to take out Scourge, or maybe Eggman has actually come to see Scourge as threat enough to base another machine off of him. Still, I would have gone for Omega if I'd been him, instead of another robot clone bit. Couldn't he at least have used Metal Knuckles?

The Dark Legion story sounds like it could be interesting, though they'd better come up with some crazy explanation; we already know that the Dark Legion had no one else to turn to but Eggman to get their implants back, and since they really have nowhere else to go (no reason to go back to Angel Island with the other Echidnas gone and the Dingoes back on top) it's pretty obvious why they're sticking around. Still, maybe Archie will actually pull off something impressive.

Because of course you've already read it. Also, I fail to see how the Dark Egg Legion having nowhere else to go is how Eggman's controlling them, as that's not controlling whatsoever.

I'm not sure how I feel about the idea of the evil duplicate's (possibly good) metal counterpart, but I sure would like to see his design.

Robotnik's secret to controlling the Dark Egg Legion intrigues me.

Robotnik is controlling the Dark Egg Legion through the cybernetics, I suspect. Kinda like roboticization, but... not.

Also, "Metal & Mettle" is starting to sound scarily close to "The Good, the Bad, and the Unknown" in the sense that it's sounding like a free-for-all with Sonic and characters who are, to one extent or another, evil duplicates. That being said, it would absolutely own if Kintobor (Moebius' version of Robotnik) was the creator of Metal Scourge, and Metal Scourge is actually "good" but he's just misunderstood during the melee.

I really doubt that Metal Scourge is good, as it sort of implies that he's working with Metal Sonic. >_>

Why isn't the supression squad helping Scourge? Probably because they don't really like him.

they've pretty much made that clear long before #189, the question is, how is he their leader?

I'd say Scourge got his way to the top through force and some butt whooping. Judging from 189 I doubt Princess Alicia liked the idea of having Fiona as Queen.

It also implies Sonic and Scourge are fighting together. Doesn't make them both bad or both good.

I think this would be interesting. I was thinking of a fanfic where Anti-mobius' robotnik had the roboticizer and converted Scourge into a good little robot, with Sonic taking pity on him. Perhaps Metal Scourge would be the same, good, yet but sadly lacking in free will.
