Part 1 of No Thanks for the Memories, the 15th anniversary special, begins now!
El spoilers!
Sonic and his crew are talking to the Chaotix, who have just recently appeared on Earth. Cream has been reunited with her mother. Before even the fourth page, the Chaotix are supposedly transported back to their world, along with their detective agency.
Meanwhile at GUN, Topaz is being chewed out by Westwood for letting Eggman get away with the space shuttle and using it to get to the space colony ARK (as seen in the show). She plans on telling Rouge about it, but she's nowhere to be found.
Chris and his friends are playing soccer, and he's disappointed that Sonic didn't show up to watch his game. When he makes it back home, he discovers that Sonic and his crew have mysteriously disappeared.
Where is Sonic? At the good ol' Green Hill Zone! Sonic does battle with a Motobug in beautifully-done artwork by Tracy Yardley.
Eggman and his crew are hiding out at the North Pole with the Egg Carrier 2. He's studying Gerald Robotnik's journals and working on adapting his designs of Emerl for his own nefarious purposes.
Sonic does battle with a squad of Buzzbombers, grabs a few rings and a shield, then fights an Eggman facsimile with the classic wrecking ball. He wins the battle, and naturally frees the animals.
Unfortunately for him, his adventure is just beginning as he is instantly transported into Marble Zone. As he fights is way through, he discovers Amy, and they head out to fight Eggman in the classic fireball boss battle.
Chris and Chuck head to Angel Island to see if Knuckles might know what's going on. When they arrive, they discover that not only is Knuckles mysteriously absent, but the master emerald, as well.
In Spring Yard Zone, Sonic and Amy make their way through some classic traps, then accidentally run into Knuckles, sending the three of them falling into the infamous bottomless pit.
End el spoilers
All I can say is WOW. This story should have been done years ago! Having Sonic go through the classic Sonic 1 levels one at a time and even fighting Eggman was great. Tracey's art is outstanding, as usual, especially his beautiful renditions of the classic zones. Joe does a superb job including plenty of old school stuff, including the shield monitor, springs, Neutrons, Buzzbombers, and more. There are plenty of neat touches throughout the story, such as Sonic not being able to proceed when fighting the "bosses" (due to a force field. Clever), or being unable to be hurt as long as he has a ring in his hand.
Great lines in this issue:
"Do you sense imminent expository ruminations forthcoming, Decoe?"
"Have you been reading the dictionary again, Bocoe?"
"That's it! I'm getting my own dictionary!"
"This Eggman substitute has not been approved by the dairy council."
Of course, there are a few rough spots. At one point, Decoe and Bocoe mix each other up. A footnote reads that "Eggman discovered he was a human..." What exactly did Eggman think he was beforehand, dare I ask?
This is easily my fave Sonic X issue yet. I give it a 9 out of 10.
Discuss!
In the episode where Eggman releases Shadow, he is shocked to discover that he is human. This story takes place after the SA2 story.
Oooooooh say can you sing? By the yard with the springs? And volcaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaanoes will blow, with marbles not snow. And greeeeeeeeeeeen hill will be, forever be still, my FAAAAAAVE rite oooooof them allllllllll.
No I dont know what Im sayng either. Im just too excited for words.
WAIT! So the Sonic X comics are actually better than the crap show?!? I think they should've did this in the damn show, but we all know all japanese anime producers like to tihnk. "Annoying-mediocore-cliched-plots-that-last-26-episodes-straight-is-no.1-priorty."
I might pick up this issue if its as good as i read. Reminds me of earlier issues of the regular Sonic comics.
Hey, hey, HEY!!!
I'M the one who does the Sonic X reviews around here buddy!! Dont'cha forget it!
What a great issue! One of the best! I love having Tracy Yardly back on the book again. Tracy's one of the best things to ever happen to the Sonic comics. I wish they'd give Tim Smith the boot already. Spaz does a great cover as usual.
What's not to like about this issue? Chaotix, Vanilla, Sonic 1 levels. The writing was perfect! The jokes were actually funny in a "ha ha" way, not "heh heh". It doesn't look like this trap Sonic and his furry freinds are in was Eggman's doing. He's thousands of miles away.
I love the way the Sonic 1 game plays out. There's a force field where he can't move past becuase it's just like the end of the T.V. screen. The rings he grabs keep him from being hurt instead of giving him power.
I'm also enjoying the sub plot with Rouge, Topaz and Westwood. It's nice to see a continuing story arc in the background rather than having just single story issues.
I was suprised to see Espio flirting with Vanilla since Vector is the one that's in love with her. But you can't blame Joe for that as 4Kids completly edited out the scenes of Vector's crush on Vanilla from the Japanese Sonic X to save time for commercials. Joe's only going by those 4Kids episodes. Plus, since those scenes never aired in America, technically there's nothing wrong.
I was hoping to see more of the Chaotix than to just have them dissapear again. Oh well.
Since when can Amy do a spin-dash attack? Well, if Knuckles and Tails can do it in the games, why not?
August?!! I gotta wait till August for the next ish?! NNOOOOO!!!
This should be the first line of the next issue:
Sonic - "Knuckles? How did you get here?"
Knuckles- "Lock-on technology."
Sonic - "Hunh?"
Knuckles - "Nevermind"
All-in-all this issue is a must have for Sonic video game fans. Joe is to be commended for doing such a great job on this book. When the comic is better than the show it's based on, you know you're doing something right. It's great to have two Sonic comic's per month that are so different.
Overall 9/10 If you buy one Sonic X comic this year, this is it.
Amy can spindash in Sonic Advance 3, so why not Sonic X? Does this issue count as a Sonic 1 adaption? I can't wait till the next issue.
Well, they were'nt so much spin dashing as they were rolling. Amy can roll in Sonic Heroes.

Amy spin-dashes in Sonic Advance 2 most definitely.
It's been awhile since I played those games, so I forgot. Thanx for correcting me.

There were several times in the 4Kids dub where it showed Vector had a crush on Vanilla.
But without the key scenes that were removed, it just looked like he was eager to please, which underscores the detective/client relationship they had going. It comes off rather platonic.
Exactly, he just looked like he was blushing while he was talking to her. That's the only extent to that.
It'd be awesome if Metal Sonic appeared in Sonic X # 11, but I doubt that'll happen.
I believe that any character not appearing in the Sonic X anime is ineligible to appear in the book.
