Last time on Sonic X, Sonic got trapped a virtual reality world based on his first adventure on the Sega Genesis. Along the way, he found out some of his other friends are there too. On the last page, Sonic Knuckles and Amy fall into a large chasm.
Fortunatly for them, as the first page shows, there are the typical springs for Sonic and Co to jump on and slow thier fall. Knuckles blames the entire incident on Sonic. Telling Amy the if it wasn't for her boyfriend, Eggman wouldn't have caused chaos control that trapped them on this world to begin with. Sonic replies firstly, that he is not Amy's "Boyfriend" (right in front of Amy too, poor gal.)and that Eggman must be defeated no matter what planet he's on, or else he'd take over the world.
Chris is depressed since he can't find his furry friends and figures they've must've gone back to thier world. Charles says that the master emeralds energy is still on this planet, and since Knuckles would never leave without it, they must still be on the planet somewhere, so Chris and Chuck head out to find the Master Emerald.
Meanwhile Sonic and co. manage to defeat another phony Eggman boss and this time rescue Rouge. Much to the chagrin of Sonic, they end up in an underwater level. Next, we find out who is behind this dastardly scheme. Surely it can't be Eggman as he is all the way in the antartic. So the villan behind it all is......
Eggman. (Dagnabbit!! I thought for sure it was someone else this time. I mean how many times can they use him as the villan before it gets stale?)
Eggman has trapped Sonic and his friends in a virtual reality world. He is controling it with the use of a machine that looks remarkably like a Sega Genesis. The robots don't seem to care, and Bokkun is happy cuz Eggman is too busy to notice he's eating all his nutball ice cream.
Wait, did I just read that right? "Nutball" Ice Cream? Joe, it's a good thing for you kids sometimes read these threads or I could go into some very juvenile humour right now.
Anyhoo, the whole point of this is that he's using Sonic and his pals energy to help power a rocket they're stuck in (but don't know it works due to the whole VR thing). The virtual reality world is powered by the master emerald, and Sonic and company's kinetic energy is helping to power the rocket. Once they get to the final level, a timer will count down and then they'll be sent "BAM!! POW!1 Straight to the moon Alice!!"
Meanwhile, in the Genesis world, Sonic and the gang rescue Tails. Rouge notices she can't fly and Amy can't "Feel" her hammer anywhere. Knuckles can't climb either. After Rouge does a little more flirting with Knuckles, they find Vanilla, Cream, Cheese, and their new friend, Toasted Bagel(I kid). Sonic uses a invinciblity monitor to free them. Just then a vaccum sucks them up to the final level. This starts the chain reaction in the rocket.
Fortunatly, Chris and Chuck arrive just in time to find the rocket. The rocket itself is what's left over from Eggmans old base that Rouge and Topaz attacked way back in an early episode of Sonic X. They find Sonic and friends strapped to tables with VR headgear on them. They free them from the VR sets and Sonic orders them to get out while he grabs and run off with the Master Emerald (umm, isn't that Knuckles job? It IS his emerald after all, glory hog). This starts a self-destruct timer, and forces the old cliche of everyone running out of the rocket before it blows up.
Eggman is of course upset, and Bokkun is crying because they've ran out of icecream. (Eggman really should make his robots run off of fuel instead of human food.) The last narrative says that soon after, Eggman and the robots were captured and imprisoned.
Review:
Another fun issue that does not dissapoint. The whole Sonic and friends stuck in Sonic 1 for the Sega Genesis plot made for both a fun and nostalgic read. Rouge was laying on the flirting thicker than usual, and Eggman stole the show with some great lines. My favorite being;
"By the time they reach the final level of the trap, they will have expended so much energy that it will overload the circuit of our Secret War. Then they and the trap will be blown to Kingom Come (or at least the moon), solving what has been an Infinite Crisis across multiple earths and will lead to the Ultamite House of Eggman!"
"I'm Gene Shalit. This is Today on NBC" (Okay he didn't say that, but the humour is simular.)
Spaz did an awesome cover as usual. I'm noticing a trend with some of his Sonic X covers. There's usually some big explosion about to happen that Sonic's completly oblivious to. Tracy Yardley is brilliant as always. He makes Tim Smith's work pale in comparison.
I only have two criticisms;
1. Just how the heck did Eggman and his robot cohorts manage to capture Sonic and his pals without thier knowing and strap them to that VR machine in the first place? Think about it, they had to kidnap them in thier sleep, take them to the rocket AND steal the Master Emerald. If Eggman and the 'bots can do that, what chance would Sonic ever have?
2. A flavor like "nutball" ice cream just opens up a huge can of juvenile humour. I'd come up with some great jokes, but kids might read this thread and besides, I'm all spent from Nintendo Wii jokes.
OVERALL 8.5/10
Considering Eggman is the only villain on the show, don't get your hopes up that we'll see another major villain in the book for a long while. It ain't gonna happen. XD
Oh, and as far as Eggman capturing them. In issue 10 Amy mentioned something about smelling somethng funny and getting sleepy. Sleep gas maybe?
"This starts a self-destruct timer, and forces the old cliche of everyone running out of the rocket before it blows up."
Well. It beats runing INTo the rocket.
*Corny Sonic Adventure Sonic voice* "Oh no guys! This rocket is about to explode! Let's get out of here!"
Knuckles: "But Sonic! That's cliche!"
Sonic: (Snaps fingers) "Your right! Let's do something different!"
*They all sit down and play poker while smoking cigars*

Awwww, somebody's jealous.
Hey, if Eggman had the Master Emerald, then how come Angel Island was still afloat in issue 10?
Why did Chuck call Espio "Espy?"
And uhh, why did Eggman call the sprite of him in the game a "sprite designed to look like his grandfather?" In the Genesis days, it was still Eggman, not Gerald...
Other than that, good issue.
About the sprite supposebly being Gerald. The way I see it, Gerlad created the technology Eggman was using for the trap. Eggman hacked into the systems, or somethhing to that effect, and since he only holds himself and his grandfather with high esteem, he based the sprite on Gerald, as sort of a dedictaion, I guess.

I noticed that too. I guess it is like the flying amy thing.

I know this is a few days late but Espy is a common nickname for Espio, just like Vec is for Vector or Knux for Knuckles, in the main comics so why not here?
What I think he means is why would you act familiar with someone you just met. You don't call someone by a nickname the first time you meet.
It makes sense, but it wouldn't be the first time someone calls somebody they just met with a nickname.
