I decided not to wait for my subscription issue and bought this at my bros comic shop.
Sonic X #26 "La Layenda Del Gran Gordo" (The Legend of the Great Big Guy!)
Written by: Ian "The Macho Potto" Flynn
Art by: James "Superfly" Fry
Cover by: Patrick "Pencil-Neck" Spaziante
STOET: Chris is nuts about the latest Wrestling hero "El Grand Gordo" (Spanish for "The great, fat one"). Sonic dismisses G.G. as Eggman in a cheap disguise which ticks Chris off. Chuck informs Chris that he has two tickets to Gordos next big fight which delights Chris, while Sonic decides to hatch a plan.
Meanwhile, Eggman, as El Grand Gordo has dispatched another opponent. In the dressing room, Bocoe and Deccoe are getting upset that Eggman hasn't stopped his latest scheme as this was just to make money for a Sonic Smashing robot. But Eggman can't get enough of the applause and attention. He loves being the hero for a change. (Frankly, if he's this well-loved, he can come up with a much better plan using his new found charisma than using another giant robot.) But he's not as much of a big, tough hero as he lets on. It seems his very garrish (8/10 on the Macho Man, Randy Savage scale. 10 being the "Macho King" since nobody has dressed more over the top than Randy Savage) oufit has sparkly sequins on the cape that are actually nanobots that have a negative charge, and the rings floor is one giant magnet. All Eggman has to do is get some of the Nanobots on his opponent and activate them to pull them down to the mat. Making a pinfall very easy. (Remember this is a cartoon kids. In a cartoon wrestling is real.)
Since they've mainly been staying at the stadium, Bokkun's been getting into the concession stand. Eating up all the cotton candy and chocolate bars he can find. He's covered with cotton candy all while having an errie look on his face. It's a sugar rush of insanity.
Eggman gets news that his next opponent will be fighting him for charity. It's Sonic the Hedgehog!! He and the bots panic and start to train for the big fight. Sonic thinks he can just relax and wait for the match but Knuckle has other plans. He coaches and trains Sonic over the next few days. Not just because Knuckles doesn't realize that G.G. isn't the real deal, but he just likes torturing Sonic. (Hey, it's better than guarding a Master Emerald right?)
It's time for the big match. Sonic and G.G. go at it for a bit, and Sonic gets covered in the sequins. The bots activate the magnet from a good distance (Cuz, y'know thier robots and a giant magnet would screw them up a bit).
Sonic is pulled to the ground, buts still fights as best he can. He managed to get Eggman covered in his own activated sequins and he starts getting pulled to the ground as well. It's a stand off as both can barely move. But someone or something has chewed through the cable that supplied power to the giant magnet. (Bokkun's appetite must know no bounds.) Now it's a level playing field. Sonic makes short work or Eggman and is about to unmask him. Eggman begs him to stop and let him remain as El Grand Gordo. Sonic looks over at Chris who is in the audience. Tears are swelling in his eyes as he watches both his heroes. Sonic decides to let Eggman keep his secret identity, and Eggman raises Sonics hand in victory making himself look even more selfless.
Meanwhile, a not so mysterious small black figure wearing a cape finishes watching the match. Saying that it matters not that Eggman still gets to be the hero, as the Eggman Empire now belongs to him!! Nyaaa-haa ha!!
TO BE CONTINUED
The moral: There's more to being a hero than just glory. Also, having a huge sugar rush can make you turn evil. (Which would explain why most kids are real brats on Nov 1st.)
THE REVIEW: Wow! I came in for a silly story of Eggman being a wrestler, only to find a story with a fair amount of emotional conflict. Eggman loves being the hero. Even if it's a bit artificial. He has the money for the other plan, but he loves the adoration the comes from being the hero that he won't give it up. I think he's in the right direction here. His newfound charisma can have a strong influence on the masses. Making taking over the world much easier than just another dumb bot for Sonic to smash. Sonic shows quite a range of emotion too. It's obvious he's a bit jealous of the hero worship Eggman has gotten. But when he saw the teaser in Chris's eyes he knew he couldn't unmask El Grand Gordo as it would hurt Chris. Like Dan Drazen might say, this story had al ot of "Heart" (UGH! I just made myself sick.)
Fry's art is all over the map in this ish. Some panels just look off, while some look great. But the emotions come through real strong, and that was the most important part for this story. Also, Deccoe and Bocoe come of rather mean as they hate this El Grand Gordo bit and want Eggman to finish his robot. Bocoe even gives a slight punch in the face when he takes his mask off.
OVERALL: 8/10 Good issue. Can't wait to see where the story goes from here.
SIDE NOTE: I cannot for the life of me, recreate El Grand Gordo on "Smackdown vs. Raw 2008". His outfit is just a bit too crazy. Plus, there's no cape option.
Yeah This issue was very funny, did you even notice what Decoe and Bocoe were disguised like? Decoe was diguised as a parody of Don king and Bokoe was disguised as a parody of Rockys trainer.
Yea I noticed that too. I like the attention to detail. Like the bots operating the magnet from far away. Cuz if they operated it close up, it would probably kill them. Magnets and robots don't mix too well. It wouldn't affect the nanobots (sequins)since there only job is to become negative energy. So they would just switch on or off, and not have any data stored in them.
Am I the only one who seemed to notice that Scarlet Garcia seemed to have a little crushy wushy on Gran Gordo?
