Sonic X #27: Conquest is like a Box of Chocolates

Written by Ian "Sweet Tooth" Flynn

Art by Steven "Sugar Junkie" Butler

Cover by Patrick "Umm.....Diabetes?" Spaziante

STORY: As we last left our heroes and former villans, Eggman and Sonic had made a truce. Eggman had given up his evil ways (sort of) to become Station Squares biggest wrestling hero, "El Gran Gordo." However, unknown to others, Bokkun had been eating up all the sweets around the arena and was slowly going insane from the huge sugar rush.

We start with Eggmans faithful robots Deccoe and Bocoe trying to warn the others of Bokkuns newfound evil. Deccoe dresses like a giant chicken nugget and wrestles El Gran Gordo to get within earshot, while Bocoe tries several disguises to get past Ella. The final one being a girl scout.
He finally gets through by telling the truth. "Blasted human morals, who can resist Thin Mints?" Before Deccoe can get Eggman stop wrestling him enough to tell him whats up, Bokkun appears as "Emperor Super-Awesome Mega-Brilliant Shiny ehki-ehki-eki k'ting zoop zowie (somebody get him a shrubberry!!) with a cherry on top Bokkun!" AKA The Cape!!

He demands that the leaders of the world (whom have come to watch Gran Gordo wrestle at this event. Sorry, I forgot to mention that important plot point) force it's citizens to only manufacture sweets. Halloween will be every Saturday, and cavities will no longer be allowed to exist. He then has two giant robots smash through the arena to show them what "fun-size" should really be. The whole thing is upsetting Eggman as Bokkun is doing the evil thing all wrong. "The wanton destruction of property comes AFTER the inevitable show of resistance!"

Bocoe and Sonic head to the arena while Eggman (as Gran Gordo) saves the president from Bokkun. Sonic attacks the giant robots, and tricks them into fighting each other "Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots" style. Gran Gordo call Bokkun into the ring, but Bokkuns Sugar Rush is too much for him. The robots in form him that they don't need a wrestler right now, they need a mad scientist. Thus, Gran Gordo "heel turns" into Eggman once more. Eggman has Sonic keep Bokkun busy while he calculates a plan.

Bokkun ties up Sonic in a cape so long it would make Spawn jealous. But this backfires as Sonic uses his spin attack to make Bokkun get whipped around by his own cape. Eggman has finished his calculations, and has Sonic shoot Bokkun over to him. Eggman then pounces his big fat body right onto Bokkun pinning him down till he passes out from the sugar rush finally ending. (Basically all that calculating was for figuring out the exact moment that would happen.) Eggman tells Sonic that the truce is over and they parts ways after a hard handshake. Eggman and crew take off in one of the robots giant heads. Sonic puts on the Gran Gordo mask and aks the viewer (that's us folks) "What do you think? Should I try being 'El Rapido Azule'? Just kidding! I'd never do that to you!"

REVIEW: Well, Ian has finally done it. He has surpassed Joe Edkin in the funniest issue of Sonic X yet! Bokkun's dialogue was absolutely great!! There were lots of hilarious bits throughout the whole issue. It's issues like this that are what Sonic X is all about and what seperates it from it's more dramatic counterpart. Ian has shown that he has learned alot about what makes Sonic X work this past year. The last few issues have really shown Ian's writing talents well.

Also, Steve Butler did an outstanding job with the pencils. He offered up al ot of detail in the backgrounds and really brought the story to life. He especially handled Bokkun beautifully with his wild expressions, and super long cape.

Overall: Just before '08, Ian pulls out the best Sonic X issue this year! 10/10

I gotta agree; this issue was fantastic. To be honest Ian's Sonic X issues have been a bit touch-and go, they seemed to be a bit flat and rely too much on a single gimmick premise (Valentines Day, St. Pats Day, Las Vegas, etc.); but I think this issue is where he finally got a proper hold of the series. He really hit the ball out of the park on this one, it's my favourite issue yet.

Ah, well I have difficulty remembering who did what. My point is, Sonic X is actually start to get more of a plot now, rather than the "Christmas issue", the "Halloween issue", etc.
