Sonic X #29 Green-Eyed Monster Part 2

Written and drawn by Tracy "Kaiju" Yardley

Cover by Patrick "Mecha-Spaz" Spaziente

STORY:
The story begins where we last left off. Eggman had taken all six Chaos Emeralds, and had taken control of the Chaos Monster residing in the Master Emerald. Although Chaos tries to resist the control Eggman's new machine and egg-shaped remote keep him under control. Sonic fights back, but to little avail. Eggman then heads off to destroy Station Square. Leaving Sonic and friends stranded on Angel Island. (Parts of Tails plane were destroyed last ish.)

But all hope is not lost, as Chuck and Chris arrive in the original Blue Tornado. Poor Chuck is cramped up in the pilots seat with his knees touching his chin. (Nice touch there Tracy. Given Tails and Sonic's size compared to Chuck, that's exactly what it would be like.) Sonic, Amy, Knuckles and Tails are forced to hang on to the wing of the plane. Sonic doesn't mind at all (he usually just stands on the wing), but Amy can't stand it.

Meanwhile, sporadically throughout the comic, Vanilla and Cream (along with Cheese) are giving enviormental tips. It's both educational and very cute. Plus, it ties into the story at the very end.

While holding onto the Blue Torndado, Sonic and friends finally arrive at Station Square to find Eggman and Chaos tearing up the city. It's time for Sonic and friends to spring into action.

Hey everyone! It's time to play everyone's favorite game.......

HOW THIS CRISIS IS EASILY SOLVED!

Okay, so as we know, this is actually one of Eggman's best plans yet, and it's working beautifully. So, we have the following options of solultions that are presented thought the issue, which one (that I pretty much figured out last issue) solves our Heroes dillema.

A.) Amy gives her best to make Chaos remember his true nature and force itself to regain control.

B.) Chaos spits out the Emeralds to make Sonic become Super-Sonic. Super Sonic then fights Chaos in a spectacular battle to try to keep it under control.

C.) Sonic finally just grabs the remote that Eggman's been waving around like a tiny American flag on the Fourth of July, and smashes it to pieces, thus freeing the monster.

If you guessed C, ....you're right!! While all three things happened, the first two didn't quite work out. But C was obvious from the start. Hey Eggman, if you're going to take control of a giant monster, don't show all your enemies the tiny, easily destroyed device that controls it.

With the remote control out of the way, Chaos regains control of itself, and swats Eggman away like a tiny bug. Chaos then reforms into it's smaller self, and heads back to Angel Island to re-form with the Master Emerald. Meanwhile, in the only really funny bit of the issue, Eggman and the bots have crash landed next to Vanilla and Cream who give thier last bit of enviromental advice. That you should always recycle scrap metal.

REVIEW:
This was much less a comedy issue as it was all action. The fight between Chaos and Super Sonic was great, and I liked some of the extra touches like having the Blue Tornado included and poor Chuck being cramped in the pilots seat. The art was great! Especially the fight between Chaos and Sonic. Plus, the little bits with Vanilla and Cream were very cute. However, the solution to the problem was just too danged obvious from the start. If Eggman didn't have a remote, and was just able to command Chaos only using those bots strapped to him and his own voice, then we wouldn't had such an obvious Dues Ex Machina, and Sonic would've had a REAL battle on his hands. Plus, I was a little dissapointed to see no Tikal appearance. So far, I think Tracy's doing a very good job for an amatuer writer. Both issues had a lot of action.

OVERALL 7.5/10: While it had plenty of action, the solution was just too obvious. The moral of the story is, if you take control of a giant monster don't show all your enemies the device you use to control it. They'll just take it from you.

Not to sound too defensive, but give the book a break. The solution may be "too obvious" to you, but it's geared for 6-10 year olds while trying to be as broadly appealing as possible.

Considering how things played out in the original Sonic Adventure game, I thought that was the more satisfactory bit of storytelling. In the game, Chaos got to the point where he was beyond anyone's control and proved it by trashing Eggman's ship. I have to agree with shigamado; the climax of the story was way too pat, and it makes me realize I'm not missing a thing by not reading the comic.

Yardley's 2-parter's a guest-stint though, not the guy writing the bulk of the comic's issues (which is currently Flynn and previously Edkin).

Ironically, I have to admit, the comic HAS gotten better from it's early days.

The events of Pro Westler Eggman SHOULDN'T have worked, but they did!!!
