While Joe Edkin has been doing pretty well on the Sonic X book since issue 5, somehow he has gotten the wrong idea that Sonic and Amy can fly. This is a HUGE mistake on his part. Sonic I can forgive because Emrl is mistaken, but Amy, well I'll give you the details in the review.
Wicked Sweet Shuttle Shenanigans part two:
We are shown from the last issue, Eggmans damage throughout the park in trying to get to the shuttle. Eggman, now looking just like W.C. Fields thanks to Big's punch, is still hiding in the hall of mirrors from Sonic and co. He still can't talk too good cuz of his broken nose. As a diversion, he turns another park attraction into a giant robot spider.
Meanwhile Sonic, thinking he has a bead on Eggman is about to attack him while Emrl is about to blast Sonic with a laser cannon. This leads to a funny narrative caption "So who can save Sonic now? And why are we asking you?" Fortuneatly or unfortuneatly, the giant spiders leg comes crashing down and knocks back both Sonic and Emrl. Sonic fights the robot Spider whilst (I always wanted to use the word "whilst" I hope I spelled it right) Emrl looks on and records Sonic's actions.
Tails, Amy, Rouge and Topaz get outta dodge before the giant spider completley destroys the hall of mirrors. Eggman and the bots use the distraction to head towards the shuttle. With Bokkun still high on sugar. Thanks to the destruction of the giant spider, Chris and Tanaka along with Topaz and Rouge end up in the sewers beneath the hall of mirrors. Tails gives Sonic a ring (No, not on his cell phone dummy!)to fight the spider some more. Sonic leaps to the top, while Emrl follows recording and imitating Sonic's actions along the way. He comments "Adversary can fly". I believe he is just mistaken over Sonics huge leap. (I wish I was mistaken about Amy though.)
Meanwhile, (Ever notice when your reading a comic the narrative word "meanwhile" comes up like 8 times in a comic book? At least it did back in the old days.)Tails and Amy drop down into the sewers to help out. Rouge flys Topaz up to the top, Tails flys Chris up, and yes, Amy flys Tanaka up. WTD?! Oh, we're not done yet. All 3 go back down to fly Big up, but he's too heavy, UNTIL Froggy jumps off Big's shoulder and he's light as a feather. It was Froggy who was super heavy. At least this explains alot about Creams ability to carry Big while flying in Sonic Heroes. So Rouge, Tails and yes, Amy fly Big up to the top where he immedeatly uses his fishing pole to try to nab Froggy back up.
AS the caption box states: "Elsewhere, Dr. Eggman and his minions are within striking distance of thier ultamite goal."
Eggman (With broken nose): There id izz! Muh uldimatt goal!
Bocoe: What did he say?
Bokkun: Heh, heh, read the caption box Decoe.
Decoe: Caption box? What is Bokkun talking about Bocoe?
Bocoe: Ignore him. He's had too much sugar and he's imagining things.
I thought that was a cute joke. Anyway Chris' parents try to stop Eggman, with Mrs. Thorndyke going so far as to bop Eggman in the nose again. Eggman throws a web like net over them. Mrs. Thorndyke comments "It's like being mobbed by fans at ComicCon International!"
Eggman instructs Decoe and Bocoe to take the Egg carrier to Egypt and meet him and Bokkun there.
Meanwhile, (there's that word again) Sonic and Emrl are almost done destroying the giant spider. It knocks down Emrl as it crashes. He is now only speaking in LEET cuz his brain is damaged. (Boy does that explain alot about forum posters!!
)Sonic gets flown back down (by Tails) to the group and hogs all the credit for destroying the robot. All is not well however, as Eggman has taken off with the shuttle. Emrl follows in pursuit of his master (Eggman), while Topaz and Rouge get in trouble with the Agency much to the shegrin of Agent Westwood. Emrl goes to Eggman and trys to explain in LEET that Eggman's his master. Eggman doesn't recognise him, but decides to use him in his battle against Sonic. Back at the park, Mr. Thorndyke says that he'll just have to make another shuttle. They try to make it look like a happy ending with group shot and all, but it's really not since Eggman won.
I just realized one of Eggmans schemes actually worked!!
Plus, with that broken nose, he looks just like the good doctor from Astro Boy.
The good:
Tim Smith's art isn't as horrible as last ish, but still not that good.
The caption joke's were funny.
Big still had a few good scenes that I didn't put in detail.
Eggman won for a change.
The bad:
AMY CAN'T FLY!! WHY IS SHE FLYING?!!
Not as good as the last few issues. the writing felt kinda off I'm sorry to say. I usually enjoy Joe's work.
Once again, unless she cut up her old magic carpet and made it into a red dress, Amy can't fly!!

amy can jump pretty high in SA1 if you hit the ground with her hammer. but yes, she certainly can't fly.
i look forward to stealing my sister's issue of this so i can see this for myself. oo;

I have to say, I'm really warming up to Joe's writing. I enjoy a writer who is willing to make fun of the comic medium and inject some silliness into a story while still having it be a good story.
I agree. But in this ish, I thought he was concentrating too much on silly lines than fleshing out a good story. It's not my least favorite Sonic X issue, but he's done better.

Maybe Tim Smith accidently drew her like she was flying instead of jumping.
Yeah, I believe that is what happened. In fact, look in issue 3. Tim draws her as if she's flying out of the giant hole in the floor as opposed to jumping out of it. Also, it happened in the way he drew issue 8 as well.
Read the issue, and you can plainly see that there is no avoiding it. She is carrying Mr Tanaka upwards out of the hole. Rouge and Tails are doing the same with others, but they can both fly. Then, all three inlcuding Amy, lift Big out while flying. There's no going around it. If I could figure out how to post scans, I would. (Seriously though, am I the only one who reads this comic?)
Yes, I read Sonic X. Thanks to it, I don't have to read the other Sonic comic anymore.
But if you'll note, this is'nt the first time Tim has drawn Amy doing this. She also appears to be flying in issues 3 and 8. Joe has done extensive research on the series, so I'm pretty sure it was'nt his fault.

Well, I appreciate the faith you have in me, but I have to admit that I'm the one to blame, not Tim Smith. Strangely enough, Sega has never objected, and it's been clearly written in the scripts and drawn on the pages. I don't know if there are slightly different rules in terms of Sonic X versus the games, but it has never been flagged during the review/approval process. I'll keep it in mind in the future.

That's a pretty big mistake there Joe, but I forgive ya. You do pen a pretty good tale.
And heck, with Sonic X the rules are kinda out the window. Especially the anime. I mean, they have Sonic and the gang breathing in space!! (Something I could not get past in the final season. Annoyed the heck outta me.) They also give Sonic waayy more powers than he has in the game. Kinda like the first two Superman movies where he can make time go backwards by reversing the earths spin, throw some cellophane "S" off his chest, and make a person lose part of thier memory by "Super kissing".
Sonic was able to breathe in space in SA2, wasn't he?
As well as Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic and Knuckles, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Rush... they can do that, don't ask why.
My friend and I have constant discussions about why Sonic can survive in space, but when SuperSonic powers down to Sonic in space, he dies. We have countless theories, each more nonsensical than the last.
I can see where Sonic X would give the impression that the characters can fly, since they have some rather massive leaps in the show (and the ability to maneuver wildly in ways that make more sense as flight). Sonic's spin attacks tend to be animated as if he's flying.
Oh and those lines are hilarious.

Actually, I loved this story despite the lack of Knuckles (I got #8 & #9 this week along with Sonic #162/163).
PC said it best why I'm starting to enjoy this series a lot in terms of the writing. The mix of comedy/seriousness is hitting the right spot.
The idea that Froggy is heavy, but not Big, created a totally unexpected (and funny) scene.
Oh, and the other lesson learned is that both Big & Lindsey know how to punch. 😀
