I thought she was a ground squirrel.

It still doesn't change the fact having the kids look like their parents' mini-me's is sheer laziness. Surely they could do something to make them look slightly different. I mean, Sonic wasn't an exact replica of his father.

Isn't a chipmunk the same thing as a ground squirrel? Anyway, until Sonic got his longer quills, green eyes, etc., he pretty much did look exactly like Jules, as well as Uncle Chuck, save for the hair/mustache/eyebrows of his "fathers."

According to the old Sonic-Grams, Sally is half chipmunk/half squirrel. But I think that's been retconned into her just being a squirrel now.

Of all the kids we've seen, they've always followed the father/son, mother/daughter species divide - with the exception of Rob and Mari-An's kid, who is a male echidna.

That seems to be common with echidnas, at least as far as the Guardians. Neither Jordan or Aaron looked like Rembrandt, and he was vastly different from his father. Also, Thunderhawk didn't look like Spectre or Sojourner.

Why do the echidnas get all the artistic variation?

Probably because there were so many. I'm sure Penders didn't want an entire brotherhood of Knuckles clones hidden from a city of, well, Knuckles clones. lol

I thought she was a ground squirrel.

The general idea is that even though she's the result of parents of two different species she only looks like one of them (her mother). Wasn't there a data file on the royal family before? I remember seeing the picture used before. Doesn't that tell us what they are?

It still doesn't change the fact having the kids look like their parents' mini-me's is sheer laziness.

I agree. I just think that back in the day the writers didn't think the parents would be used in anything except a few throwback stories so didn't bother to give them a compelling design. Tails' parents are the worst example of this though they gradually fixed it in later appearances. The characters over on the Knuckles side seem to be a different story. I thought Julie-Su's parents had some nice designs ... but it looks like their designs were done by Spaz soooo ...

That still doesn't excuse the MXYL generation. Sonia and Manic may be old as dirt but they could've had their designs tweaked, too.

They could've made Manic look closer to his namesake.

The sheer design variety was why I liked the echidnas more than the other species.

That's a great idea. Actually, I wouldn't have minded if they just used Manic and Sonia's designs rather then make two completely different characters with their names for reasons that are just plain confusing.

There were plenty of opportunities to make the designs more original than they did.

They could've made the children actual blends of the parents - eg, a hedgehog with Sally's fluffy tail or hairstyle, a squirrel with Sonic's eyes, colouring or slightly spiky fur.

They could've mixed colour palettes.

They could've used any of the children's grandparents or other family to create a genetic throwback - eg. a squirrel with Chuck's or Bernie's colouring, a blue hedgehog with blond or brown hair, or someone with Max's big, bushy tail.

They could've mixed up combinations from any of the above.

They could've at least given the kids some more more distinctive differences than Manic missing a front tooth - eg. freckles, glasses, a different body shape, slightly different eye colours.

But they didn't.

The namesake thing always got to me, too, since there's been no reason to think that a couple of random siblings that Sonic had in one part of the cosmic interstate would leave any more of an impression on him than, for example, Sally Moon or Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

I'd have expected Sally to use Julyala as at least part of any daughter's name (or how about Maxine? She always was a Daddy's girl ), and if we had to have a nod to anything, why not call the little hedgehog Juice? It could've been his real name or he could've been as cagey about that as Sonic, but it would've been a nice nod to SatAM and made a lot more sense.

I think that maybe, their just giving a nod to the one of part franchise that some love and some hate to this day. That's what I think.

And Espio's secret visitor is Juanita, I'm pretty sure.

Oh my gosh!!!!

I have no idea who that is!!!

LOL

They could've even gone the hybrid route like this artist did with Rouge and Knuckles's hypothetical children.

Green duck dude who's name I forgot:
"Sonic! Hey Sonic! Why are so blue? Hey Sonic, when you and Sally get married are you gonna have mutant hedge-squirrel babies?"

(Okay, maybe an incorrect quote)

Espio's youngest daughter in M:XYL (Original Timeline). I don't think she had any speaking lines like many of the other children in that arch but was seen and mentioned by her older sister, Salma ... who seems more plausible because she's closer to Lara-Su's age now that you mention it. But you'd think that before we see either daughter we'd get to see their faceless mother first. Given that both of the kids are chameleons it seems only right to guess their mother is chameleon, too.

And now she pulls a Meg ... comes to Espio after saying she survived Robotnik's wraith long enough to be derobotized only to spring that she became preggers shortly before and wants Espio to be with the family. Lolz. That'll never happen ... I hope.

It's hard to believe we're this close to M:XYL in the main timeline already. Twenty years might seem like a long time but the oldest confirmed in the bunch were conceived only 2 to 3 years from now depending on how long Sonic really was in space. Thanks to Take 2 we now know that it's possible for children to happen sooner or later in the timeline ... so it's plausible that someone's carefree teenage years may be coming to an end very shortly.

There's two Juanitas. One is Espio's daughter in the future, the other is his friend who appeared in a few backup stories in the Knuckles Comic.

Also, it's Mobius: 25 Years Later, not 20. If we take Lara-Su, who at 16 appears to be amongst the eldest of the "kids", that means she's born nine years from now, when Knuckles is 25. Considering the comic's been running for 16 years now (wow), and there's only been two, at most three years passed in in-comic time, I don't think we have anything to worry about.

There was? All I remember are Valdez, Liza and a purple lizard named Barney. >> What issue was that one?

Oh - I could very possibly be getting confused. Was the pink chameleon named Liza or Juanita? Whoever she was, that's who I'm thinking of.

What? Admit that teenage Sega characters - let alone Archie's original characters, even the married ones and certainly not the unmarried ones - could be doing something other than holding hands when no-one's looking?

The spirit that retconned Alexis into a step-child says "NO!". Note that in Mogul Rising, Mina and Ash have separate beds... And they've been going out for how long now? That asexuality is probably seen as vital for demographic appeal, even if the same and slightly older demographics're thriving on the UST.

The most stable, wholesome married couple in the main cast is Bunnie and Ant - and Bunnie has quite literal technical difficulties in that department.

Although given that Hershey and St' John're supposed to be in their twenties (I always found him having a thing for Sally a bit at odds with the rest of Archie's ethos in that respect), I wouldn't call a little black and white extension to that family out of the bounds of possibility.

You're thinking Liz who was Espio's friend from his childhood (who I believed was robotized / derobotized) along with Valdez (who is dead). About 90% sure.

Also, it's Mobius: 25 Years Later, not 20.

I could've sworn there was a 20, 25, and 30 years later storyline ... I think I'm wrong, though. In any case ...

If we take Lara-Su, who at 16 appears to be amongst the eldest of the "kids", that means she's born nine years from now, when Knuckles is 25.

Knuckles is 17 going on 18. Taking about a year away for the pregnancy she would have been born 6-7 years from now. That is, of course, assuming that Lara-Su isnt conceived earlier or later in the timeline.

The spirit that retconned Alexis into a step-child says "NO!".

Well to be perfectly honest ... *whispers* I don't think Elias was gone long enough to conceive a child who would almost be at full term by time St. John / Hershy found him. Dun-dun-dunnnn ...

Although given that Hershey and St' John're supposed to be in their twenties (I always found him having a thing for Sally a bit at odds with the rest of Archie's ethos in that respect), I wouldn't call a little black and white extension to that family out of the bounds of possibility.

I can't even remember the last time we've seen either of them. I want to say it was during the beginning stages of " Home " when they were married but that would be cruel even for Archie.

Hershey was in the crowd scene at Bunnie and Ant's wedding, on the edge of the image - I'd imagine that St. John was somewhere nearby.

I meant in a speaking role.

For example Dulcy was in Sonic 175 / 176 but she hasn't had a speaking role in about 50 issues where she appeared in a Backstory that was apparently held in the ol' vault for a few years ... at least. You know ... the one where Dulcy was said to have not had the power to breathe fire even though she breathed fire in SatAM and in the earlier stages of the comic. The last time she had a speaking role in the main story was when Zan was around, I believe, which was almost 100 issues ago.

*nods*

Again, I wouldn't mind seeing a resolution to that particular plot - it seemed like a very un-Archie loose end to leave.

You're not mistaken. In the "Sonic In Your Face" special there was a future from 20 years in the future. It's also where the Eggman we have now came from I believe (issue #21).

I agree that I wouldn't mind seeing Dulcy and/or Hershey get some speaking roles soon enough. Especially Dulcy, I'd like to see some of her plot points either get some progression or resolution.

Might be because his name is John ... St. John.

The revamp makes the man.
