Ian says there is no need for the new design unless Sega themselves advise him to use it. Plus, it looks like Eggman's design in Sonic Next was exclusively for that game.

Yeah, I find that extremely unlikely that they are going to redesign him. He's more of Sega character than an Archie one and he always has been.

Well, I think it can be no more difficult then drawing him slightly differently, since Archie Eggman has never looked as completly Sega-like as Sonic X's Eggman...

I wouldn't mind seeing a redesign (permanent or no) of anyone as long as it seemed in-character. One of my favrite examples was when Snively envisioned a "handsome" robot version of himself only to be downgraded to his runty self. It was little more than a gag panel but it fit well. Conversely, other designs like Rote's bomber jacket didn't click (why does a walrus need a furry overcoat? I haven't seen snow since he bought the darn thing).
Of course logic can take a hike if the ocassion merits it- zone hopping demonstrated this often. The sucess of these what-ifs rely more on the strength of the art than the story (tho the Freedom Fighters Of The Galaxy spoof happily did justice to both).
But if all you want is to see the stars playing dress-up I'd advise that you draw your own pics (or troll for them online) until they return fanart to the comic.

I've despised "Eggman" pretty much ever since the Sonic Adventure adaptation. Before that, he was actually referred to by his REAL name, Robo-Robotnik, and was four times more evil. Now, he's just an idiot. Apparently Sega forced the dumbing down of a villian that actually gave me chills reading the Endgame saga and #75. Either that, or the writers back then were on meth.

I really wish they'd put him back into his original body and stop calling him "Eggman".

The current Robotnik is far more serious and intelligent than Robotnik was when the comic began.

It would be silly to call him Robo-Robotnik because he was derobotized by the Bem in 119. And they do still call him Robotnik. They only call him Eggman occasionally.

Granted, but that's not saying much. The Robotnik from around the time of Endgame and Robo-Robotnik in the early issues of his return were far more evil and cunning than the current incarnation.

How do you figure? The current Robotnik has a bit of a goofier exterior, but he's still as evil as before, and probably more destructively capricious. For examples, see how he treated the Overlanders he was harboring in Robotropolis, or perhaps how he ordered the destruction of each of his children, or maybe how he wanted Mina offed merely because he hated his voice, or how he unneccesarily murdered untold hundreds (thousands maybe?) for the sake of his Egg Grape project, or maybe how he threated Knothole and its allies with nuclear destruction, I think you get the picture.

I think what makes it seem different now is that there's not so much of a focus on him as the bad guy as there once was. In the earlier days, it was just Sonic vs. Robotnik, so we saw so much of him and what he could do, and the mysterious way that Robo-Robotnik came on the scene was just as dastardly, but his cunningness hasn't diminished, it's just not being spotlighted as much. This Robotnik, don't forget, is far more calculating. The old Robotnik just kept running out there sending scheme after scheme after Sonic and his friends. This one sits back and strategizes, and his plans are usually much grander than the old days, he just has been foiled recently thanks to A.D.A.M. I don't think he's lost his evilness, and with A.D.A.M gone and Mogul and Naugus somewhere unknown, hopefully we will get to see him executing his evil all on his own

Perhaps a lot of it has to do with the way he is drawn, as well. I really don't like the newer look at all, nor have I been very impressed with some of the more recent artists. Guys like Stephen Butler knew how to make Robotnik an imposing figure.

Was it Sega who made Archie change the classic look of Robotnik?

i would have to say "yes". they probably wanted Archie to keep up with the last Sonic designs in any way they could.

Roach is correct. This Robotnick bides his time and comes up with the best plan he can. He's patient.

That said, Any word on him taking on his Next design or has it been agreed that that would be a bad move?

The realistic design as of now appears to be exclusively for the Sonic PS360 title. (Thank goodness.) Unless Sega wants it, I doubt we'll be seeing the realustin design in the comic. (Here's hoping it isn't in any more games as well.)

I really prefer his Next-Generation design. It's superb. At first, I was sorta' iffy about it, but now the design really sticks to me.

In fact, if I were ever to get fat one day, I would like to hire a tailor to make an "Eggman Suit" for me.

... Just kidding about that last paragraph. I think. XD
