There's something that's always bothered me about the idea of "conforming."
Many people simply conform to social standards just to be accepted. This is not admirable. But many people have what they call a "nonconformist" attitude, and do the exact opposite. This is evident in subcultures such as Goth and Punk.
But aren't these so-called nonconformists just conforming backwards? Instead of conforming to social standards, they are just conforming to what they see as the opposite. I call them not nonconformists, but "reverse-conformists." There may be a better term, but I haven't heard of it.
A TRUE nonconformist doesn't do anything to conform, but isn't afraid to conform either. A nonconformist does what suits him or her, and if that happens to adhere to a social standard, so be it. If not, that's fine too.
What do you think?
