There are an awful lot of naked furries running around out there, and have been for a long time. As someone who's tried to understand the use of clothes in what is essentially a clothing-optional society, I thought since I couldn't find this exact topic here in the Garden I'd propose it myself.
It strarted in the SatAM series when Sally went through Season 1 wearing nothing in the world except a pair of boots. A vest was added in the second season, and while it looked more pleasing from a character design standpoint it didn't address the question of why she should be wearing clothes at all. This gave rise to such visual absurdities as Sally wearing a flannel nightgown than went from her neck to her ankles in one scene, then cutting to her in her vest and boots ensemble in the next -- gives new meaning to the phrase "dressing down."
Probably the one character who best symbolizes this disconnect in the comic is Queen Alicia. When first depicted by Manny Galan inside the pickle jar in the Knuckles book, she was nekkid as the day she was whelped (or whatever). Steve Butler later put her in some kind of high-tech body stocking. Now she's dressed to the nines. But was any of this necessary? As a matter of fact, if you take a survey of the characters, females in the comic are more likely to be dressed than males.
There is, in our culture, a sense of bodily shame that's a holdover from Judeo-Christianity. I don't want to argue about that one way or another, but there seems to be no equivalent to that in Mobian furry society.
The nearest I can come up with is that in the comic clothes serve some kind of social function, a visual cue rather than the proverbial fig leaf. While that's easy to figure out in terms of some characters (the royal family and the palace guards, the EST, and organized organizations like that), there seems to be no consistent rule about these things as far as the writers are concerned. And IMO it's more important to work THIS out than to come up with names for board games and junk food.
