Michael Savage needs to catch fire. Like right now, just go up in a sea of fire like a Roman Douchebag Candle.

Speaking as someone who has two siblings on the spectrum and has known quite a few people with Asperger's: what a twat. Yeah there are bound to be a few misdiagnoses (as with pretty much any illness or disorder) and there seems to be a small minority that self-diagnose themselves with it for attention/as an excuse for unsociable behaviour, but in the majority of cases it's still a very real disorder that causes people with it very real problems. Especially in the case of low functioning autism. I have a brother who's high school age yet can barely string together basic English sentences. Oh, he's not autistic, he's just being a brat.

In summary this guy is a douchebag. Is he always like this?

Yes.

On the air, he says that Latinos "breed like rabbits", and that America's public schools are "teaching kids in the third grade how to put a condom on a cucumber." He explains that civil rights are a "racket" that is "used to steal only from the white male -- no one else pays the price." He is worried about "degenerates on the left who want to sell Americans on the idea that homosexuality, bisexuality, transsexuality, even sex with animals is normal." He demonizes pot smokers, refers to third-world nations as "turd world nations", and strongly opposes abortion (although his first wife had two while they were married). After the Dixie Chicks spoke ill of President George W. Bush, Savage inexplicably suggested they should be jailed as traitors. "We've all been warned about the dangers of a theocracy", says Savage, "where religious zealots rule. Today in America, we have a she-ocracy where a minority of feminist zealots rule the culture."

Savage was kicked off of MSNBC television for engaging in this exchange:

SAVAGE: Alright, so you're one of those sodomists? Are you a sodomite?

CALLER: Yes, I am.

SAVAGE: Oh, you're one of the sodomites! You should only get AIDS and die, you pig! How's that? [off-screen crew can be heard shouting 'Whoa!'] Why don't you see if you can sue me, you pig? You got nothing better than to put me down, you piece of garbage? You got nothing to do today? Go eat a sausage and choke on it. Get trichinosis. OK, do we have another nice caller who's busy and didn't have a nice night in the bathhouses, angry at me today? Huh? Get me another one, put another sodomite on! No more calls? I don't care. Let's go to the next scene. I don't care about these bums, they mean nothing to me. They're all sausages. Next scene; onto the next scene on the 'Savage Nation.'

I heard about this story on Monday on the 11 o'clock news. Once I heard them mention a radio show host getting flak over what comes out of his mouth, I immediately thought about him. IMO, he's probably the only guy in the San Francisco area who would sink so low for attention.

He's picking on autistic kids now? Jesus, is there no level too low, underhanded, and filthy for this guy?

While he has a point with overdiagnosis - that's a common complaint for ALL psychiatric disorders, especially those diagnosed in children - that's a fantastically stupid comment, and even problems with overdiagnosis aren't THAT bad. Certainly not "99 out of 100," though he seems to have admitted himself that that was exaggeration. Either way, autistic kids don't just need more discipline, though misdiagnosed kids who actually aren't autistic might - that's an individual desicion, what's right for some kids may not be for others.

Either way, I've never listened to the guy, but he seems like a shock jock, or at least someone from which this stuff is expected outta him - just another "shock jock went too far" controversy. He's wrong, he seems to be quite an extremist on views, his listeners seem pretty much jaded to this, and he just gets more publicity when he does things like this...

Only thing you can do is correct him to the people that believe talk like this.

Oh, and a comment on using disability to get away with antisocial behavior made me think of this:

Won't spoil, but an episode featuring an autistic child made an interesting reference.

I'm recanting here. I've been a FIRM supporter of not drugging up kids. But current events make me go with SX here. I still hate to give psychotropic drugs to kids, but when everything else has failed I'll give that some kids there is no real 'cure' for. I'm referring of course to ones that don't WANT to change. I still believe that working with a kid, understanding their problems, and letting them know they have help will cure almost any "disorder". But I and people I know have hit brick walls with two kids that just don't want to change. In those cases it's either military school type thing or pills. Either is not an appetizing choice but there just doesn't seem to BE another one.

Life sucks, eh?

Thinking back on this topic, I was reminded about a book I read for a medical class years ago. The Speed of Dark by Elizabeth Moon explored some of the hardships people with autism have and the pressure from society to "correct" it. It was a sad story and made me wonder if drugs and the like are the right say to deal with people/kids in similar situations. I'd recommend it to anyone who is interested.

There's a whole autistic rights movement.

This woman's blog is very interesting; it touches on autism and disability rights in general: http://ballastexistenz.autistics.org/
Here's another good one: http://autismcrisis.blogspot.com/
I also recommend browsing the other links, it's easy to get lost.
This one has a humorous take: http://www.geocities.com/autistry/oddizms.html

EDIT: Merf @ non-automatic links

I read a thing on some people insisting that certain forms of high-functioning autism be classified as something other than a "disability," because HFASD (High Functioning Autism-Spectrum Disorder) types are perfectly capable of functioning in society, even though they act different.

To be honest, I was surprised to learn that it was classified as a disability in the firstplace. Two different things here, "normal" autism and HFA are pretty seperate things.

I am autistic with asperger's syndrome and i think michael savage should try being sensitive to a million different things and being told that i he will not get anywhere in society because he is different and then some idiot is berating you for it.

I am, too, but I recognise that he's talking about the "classic" form.

Never say you have asperger's syndrome on the internet. Because half the net says that, and really they just wanna be assholes and want an excuse.

Excellent advice.

Personally, I just say autistic rather than Asperger's Syndrome because AS would probably get one of the following responses:

--"That's just a fad/the new ADD, everyone thinks they have that"
--"That's not a real disorder/etc"
--"lol assburgers"
