This isn't surprising, but it's a problem anyway. I'd extend this iea to many other institutions. Government censorship is worse, but non-government censorship is probably even more rampant among the media and corporations. What should be done to encourage free expression?

I personally don't see that informal moral qualms are necessarily a bad thing in science.
Especially if it's publicly funded research- taxpayers have a right to keep their money from going to causes they morally oppose.
I would try to crusade for greater medical awareness - a lot of people die because they have an "embarrassing" disease and won't get help for it. In cases like these, I would try to change hospital environments so that they are more personal and welcoming.
