Not hardly. It's difficult to pass the New York State Global Studies regents without knowledge of at least the following religions: Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddism. There are other options thrown in (particularly various African religions that'll vary & are classified under "animism"), but those first 5 are definitely going to appear--and usually with an essay thrown on them to boot (and you won't get away with knowing only one as well as usually not being able to easily use only Christianity/Judaism/Islam without picking something else). That means you're going to have religious discussions. ;p
While I can't speak for EVERY public school, the idea that religion isn't discussed in public schools is silly. It's very much a part of the learning process in many different ways.

I suppose I must have been given the wrong impression then, because I've never attended to public school and I'm basing it on what I've heard from friends who have.
