What constitutes an actual "troll"?

"Troll" in quotations because the meaning of the term is kind of diluted these days. Just about everything these days can be considered trolling. What is a real troll? Does joking poking fun at your pals count as trolling? Or is it only trolling if it's super blatant and obvious trolling. Or what about the subtle kind of really insulting trolling that you'd expect your college/university professor to use on you?

Trolling is when you are fishing for a specific response without the person you are targeting being aware of it. If they are aware you are trolling and pretend to be unaware then they are anti-trolling you.

A troll is a large, hairy humanoid beast that usually has pale or greenish skin. Troll are known to live in caves and love to eat small children.

Oh wait, you mean like a griefer?

Specific response? What about trying to find out how people respond to thing X, without aiming for any particular response?

Also, I would say trolling depends on the intent of the troll. I do not think something no longer becomes trolling as soon as the target is aware it is trolling; by all means, sometimes trolling can still be effective when the target is not sure how to respond to said trolling. (And even if not, I would still consider it attempted trolling.)

But how do you determine intent?

If some jerk is deliberately posting or doing something to make others react with fear or anger for entertainment purposes - when the people would not do so normally on their own - that's trolling to me. It's one thing to, for example, post a thread about abortion in Marble Garden; discussing a sensitive topic can be done maturely and there is no rule against it. Completely another to post a thread about abortion saying that everyone who is pro-choice (or pro-life) are misguided idiots and should just grow up - that creates a hostile environment where those who consider themselves the insulted party are going to react negatively.

Sure, there are subtleties, the whys and wherefores, and maybe some people are just more difficult to get along with than others. But let's cut through all this stupid that seems to be surrounding the issue. I mean, seriously, it isn't that hard to figure out.

And it isn't like using trolling in a more general sense is such a bad thing, either. Language evolves.

On response: trolling is typically (almost exclusively?) meant to provoke an enraged or defensive response from insecure fanboys of a subject. I can't really think of trolling being meant to cause another result. Like say, provoking someone to make a ridiculously thoughtful response to a trivial matter. Is prank-calling someone considered trolling?

On intent: trolls make comments to provoke a reaction on a subject that they themselves are indifferent on. If they did care, they'd be arguing instead. ADD: On second thought, I guess many trolls probably don't think highly of the subjects they bash. However, what I mean is that they aim to incite an argument that they don't plan to participate in. They don't care if their comments are proven wrong (if they were even true in the first place.)

In addition to anti-trolling, if someone knows the troll, they can counter-troll them as well. I once counter-trolled someone who stalked a board for something he didn't like. I happened to know what he DID like, so I provided a rebuttal that included using his interest as an unfavorable comparison. Granted, intent is hard to grasp on the Internet, but his next post seemed genuinely PISSED.

I think a better question would be, "What is the difference between someone who is trolling and someone who is joking?"
Of course, one person's sense of humor might not be shared by every person involved. And that's where problems occour, I think.

It's simple; if person A continues to joke at person B's expense despite it being clear that person B doesn't like it, then obviously, it's not just joking, it's trolling, for they would not have done that if they cared how person B felt about it.
