Minister ex-communicates members for not backing Bush

The Associated Press

The minister of a Haywood County Baptist church is telling members of his congregation that if they're Democrats, they either need to find another place of worship or support President Bush.

Already, the Reverend Chan Chandler has ex-communicated nine members of East Waynesville Baptist Church. Another 40 members have left in protest.

During last Sunday's sermon, he acknowledged that church members were upset because he named people, and he says he'll do it again because he has to according to the word of God.

Chandler could not be reached for comment today, but says his actions weren't politically motivated.

One former church member says Chandler told some of the members that if they didn't support George Bush, they needed to resign their positions and get out of the church, or go to the altar, repent and agree to vote for Bush.

A former church treasurer says she's at church to worship God and not the preacher.

(Russ Bowen, WLOS)

As a christian who sees other christians do stupid arse-backwards things like this, it agitates me to no end. And then people wonder why christians have such a bad name and reputation because the loudmouths that pull stunts like this. A church is a place of worship, not some soapbox to preach a political agenda. I go to church to worship God thank you, not an elephant or a donkey with an agenda.

**sigh** Politicians who use God as an agenda to fuel hate, discrepancy, and put money in thier pockets and "church morons" like these who use God to fuel unnecessary political diatribes. Is it any wonder why the whole world f-ing sucks and has gone to pot now?

Ugh - Dont mind me. I'm just ticked right now.

Yeah that's pretty sad. In my church, it's split but no one gets into big arguments over it, except with my dad who always likes to debate politics in a civil manner.

this guy has stepped over the line, it's not his job to talk politics, but to preach the word of god and suchlike.

which is why my best freind and i have agreed to disagree over politics, religion and macdonalds.

Why is he asking them to vote for Bush when there's been legislation passed around FDR's time that no President can have more than two terms (FDR himself notwithstanding)? Isn't that kinda, ya know, stupid?

But SH, everyone knows that Bush is Christ in his second coming. And Christ can bend the rules.

....What a jerk. >:/

Actually, I've been half-wondering if Bush intends to bend the rules and claim more than two terms... but then, while he may not be the brightest bulb, he typically at least TRIES to make himself look honorable (whether he's successful or not's a whole 'nother story). I dun think he'll do it.

Agreed. I am sick and tired of so-called "Christians" who go around acting like they're all high and mighty. We're supposed to be humble, for cryin' out loud! Not go around acting like we're better than anyone. No Christian should act like that. This guy really needs to rethink his agenda.

This just seems a little bit too ridiculous of an event to be let gotten away with. O_o Seriously, I'm confused.

Though not so much, I suppose. Things like this happen all the time in some form or another, they're just not brought to our direct attention.

It's that sort of thing that stops me from trying to be a christian.

He ought to resign...

Im not someone who reckons that everyone who maks a mistake should resign, but this is a step to far, this isa deliberate act which is just stupid.

As a preacher, he has no right to shun people away from the church, because of political belief. Reverends shouldn't have the power to be able to do that.

And, pfft, as if God would support some of these current world leaders, anyway. >>

All I can say is I'm not atheist, but I'm not officially aligned with anything for reasons like theese.

Try biting your tounge through 12 years of Catholic school.

I don't care where I go "ultimately", as long as I'm far away from such narrow minded people...cause that would be hell in any case.

I'm pretty sure Christ taught tolerance towards other people and their beliefs, and to be Christian you should, you know, follow Christ. That's the problem most of these would-be Christians have, THE DON'T DO WHAT THEIR RELIGION IS ABOUT!!!! Obviously this isn't all Christians, just the ones like this guy.

--This is purely theological, and is not a comment on faith itself--

I've done alot of poking around, and one interesting thing is that ALL 3 books (Jewish, Christian, and Muslim) speciffically state that regardless of what one believes, that if your life is good and honorable and if you truly believe what you believe, that you are guaranteed to have your belief fulfilled to whatever extent it is true and that you will not be damned.

So Judaians that do not accept Christ as The Son, but still believe and keep their faith will be saved because of their promise as the chosen people.

Christians who do not accept Mohammed as The Prophet, but are faithful as Christians will still be rewarded through their honor of God through Christ. Similarly, Judaians will be rewarded because of their honor of God, Abraham, and Moses.

Those who do not believe in God, but live life fully, honestly and kindly will be rewarded through their honor of God through kindness to life which God created.

I think George Carlin summed it up best: You only need 1 commandment - don't be an a$$hole.

I've always believed that's what important is that you stick to your own morals, lead a good life and do what you set out to do with regards to others.

Please don't comment on things you really have no idea about.

I don't know about the Qu'ran, but the Bible states nothing like that. What it does say is this:

"Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'" -John 14:6

That sounds a whole lot like it DOES matter what you believe, and what you must believe is that Jesus is the only way to God, and the only way to Heaven. It also says that anyone who isn't going to Heaven (retroactively, not believing in Jesus) is going to Hell.

Jesus taught nothing about tolerance. He taught about loving everyone, regardless of what they believe. He didn't say you had to accept their beliefs as truth, and that everyone was right. Everyone is not right.

So please knock off this wishy-washy, distorted junk you're passing off as the Word of God and keep your opinions where they belong.

Out in the open for everyone to have their own opinions on?

Seriously. Don't bash his head in just because he has a different opinion on life.
