Particularly those who have watched both the Ocean Group and FUNimation dubs.

Youtube searches have unveiled the far more elusive Shuki Levy soundtrack from the original two-season dub of DBZ.

Now, compared with the various and more common Bruce Faulconer offerings of the latter FUNimation dub...which is superior?

I have to give a nostalgic edge to the Shuki Levy soundtrack.

Oh, you mean the one where the lead sounds like a prepubescent boy all throughout adulthood?

Ocean group always had better sounding actors, and the soundtrack was definitely better than Bruce's tripe. All Bruce did was sit on a Yamaha and just wail on that thing while he swung his long stupid hair back and forth and just THREW UP on the series.

Either way, *hugs his new season box sets he's been getting* I'll take my Mono, original Japanese score and voices. =3

i listened to the original japanese for the first time yesturday. and i was thrown at how weird Goku sounds I mean REALLY weird.

I thought he sounded like a little old lady.

I was never bothered by the dub. Neither of them.....well to be honest I didn't keep track of the change between Ocean Group and Funimation. But I'd rather have Goku sound like a male than a little old granny. Or worse. Naruto. yeah I said it. I think Goku's japanese voice sounds like Naruto's japanese voice. If Naruto had a bad head cold.

I remember reading somewhere (I currently don't remember where though, unfortunately) that major male protagonist characters in various animes tend to be voiced by females in their original Japanese versions. Son Goku seems to be no different in this regard. I prefer his original Japanese voice to his US ones.

Bruce Faulconer had his moments, especially later in the series. He made a lot of good theme songs for the characters, like Perfect Cell, Super Namek, and Super Buu

Original Jap. All the way. Can't deal with American dubs. It all went sour when in that first fight between Goku and Vegeta when Goku goes KaioKen x10, and he gets ready to nail Vegeta with that fist to the face, they insert a cougar roar.

REALLY?!?!? Ever since then, I've never taken them seriously (though the Freiza saga had some hilarious dub moments)

Meh I heard the dub first. And usually what ever I hear first I tend to like more. But seriously wtf mate @ Goku's japanese voice. Even the woman who voices Naruto does a more convencing male voice then who ever the hell that is who does Goku.

I saw the raw DBZ show (before it even aired in the US, hooray friend that visited Japan, bringing home tapes). It sounded cool, but I didn't know wtf.

Then the show aired, and I was like oh sweet! This was my first anime, so I wasn't all into the whole "purity of the show" point yet. Then I caught some subs online with good ol' Goku's voice... and it's great. It fits much better than Sean's voice only because the JVA for Goku actually emits and acts all the situations accordingly; anger is anger, embarrassment is embarrassment, troubled is troubled, etc, and it never sounds forced or out of place. Sean, on the other hand, while he does a great job most of the times, a lot of the times it just ... didn't fit the emotion to the situation. You could tell he tried, but it just never caught. I really blame very bad directing, and the fact that by the time the good Funi took it over, the show had already been labeled as a "kid friendly action fest", so they figured they would keep going and butchering lines and keeping it... "silly".

I know DB was already silly to begin with, but they just tried so hard. AND GOD, all the filler lines when the character's backs are facing the viewer!!! STOP THAT. THEY DON'T SAY ANYTHING, and you adding "Sheesh, my bad" does not make the scene more tolerable or funnier!!! It only kills any suspense or dramatic lines!!!

ALSO, Bruce you numbnuts, don't fill empty voids of background; they're there for suspense and build up! RARRR.

Good god, they also butchered Gohan going SSJ2. It's like they didn't even try to do something special.

Funimation is a great company, with great VA's, (except Bulma, good lord who hired her lame ass?) Just, I think us DBZ fans were unlucky that DBZ hit the US during times when anime wasn't even a known word, and licensing issues hit both US and Japanese companies hard back and forth.

*shrugs* Like I said, I still have my subs on my season box sets, and hooray.

Speaking of Jin, what box set are they up to? I did see Perfect Cell was already out, so I'm guessing halfway through Buu by now? Im waiting for all of them to be released so I can grab them in one fell swoop.

They're up to Great Saiyaman/World Tournament Saga. Majin Buu saga is out in Feb and I think the final box is May.

I kind of prefer the original Japanese, then the Ocean Group version. The FUNi dub isn't that bad though. I haven't really given much thought to it in a few years.
