Rice Aid

To get away from the unbirthing Pikachus pictures and the revelation that Dumbledore was gay, is a simple little game where you have a word and you have to guess what it means.

The bonus is for every one you get right you donate 10 grains of rice.

Get clicking guys.

So far I have donated 950 grains of rice and my vocab score is 28.

Now that's kinda cool. Educational, fun AND contributing directly to a good cause.

I stopped around 970, but the highest vocab score I acheived was about 42 (damn you Samanfur!) =P

Most of the words were completely unfamiliar to me, but I was able to make a good guess at their meaning through my knowledge of etymology and by comparison with other words and other languages. Unfortunately I slipped up all too often, which hampered my donation as donations seem to grow as you get more right but reset every time you get one wrong.

I refuse to play this unless it contributes to solving my hunger as well! Otherwise it does nothing to stop world hunger!

I got to 45 on an appallingly rubbish network connection. What an addictive game for working hours :)

Wow, how useful to learn new vocabulary while having fun AND getting rid of world hunger! :D

Donated 2230 grains of rice thus far with an average of 28-30 of level, but I managed to get to 38 once.

1500 grains of rice with vocab level 30. That's the combined efforts of me and THS, although we weren't taking it that seriously c.c

It was actually pretty hard =/

I made it to 49 today :) Hurrah for "thamaturgy" :D

Is it me, or are some of the definitions off? I always understood that "charnel" was to do with meat - a charnel house was a slaughterhouse. OK, granted it was where animals were killed, but that didn't make it sepulchral.

Also I swear some of the words they come up with have *not* been added to the English language. Since when is "triste" a word in English? Spanish & French, totally. I've never heard an English person use it.

But still, enjoyable and indeed addictive :)

Aye, DW, it does seem to include colloquialisms and dialects. However, I think this just adds to the challange! *grins*

True! I came across a few Scottish words as well, I think. Variety is the spice of life :)

49?

God damnit DW. I bow to the master.

However I have to contest that triste has been accepted into the English language. I'm sure I've seen it somewhere.

Hey, thanks :) It took some effort, mind you.

You're right, by the way. Triste has apparently been in the English language since the middle ages, no doubt brought over by our Norman masters. According to dictionary.com:

"triste (trēst)
adj. Sad; wistful.

[Middle English, from Old French, from Latin tristis.]"

I live & learn :) In my defence, my spellchecker doesn't like it. But then again it doesn't like the English spelling of "defence" either...

I haven't had time to play it since I last posted - give me chance... *cackle*

EDIT: The maximum score appears to be 50 - although I'd have expected "omphalos" to be somewhere lower down the scale.

The roleplayer in me was suitably relieved to've heard of "azoth", though. 🙂

Given the amount of languages that English's obsorbed down the years, the amount of random European words around doesn't tend to surprise me much. A bit of knowledge of etymology helps, though. 🙂

I wondered when you'd surpass me :) *doffs hat*

Knowledge of entymology, on the other hand, would of course get one nowhere in that game ;)
