Xenu demanded Jason Lee use his power to show the world what kind of stuff they put on in that volcano way back at the dawn of time.

I blame Scientology for this monstricity and no one and nothing is changing my mind.

This isn't even PART of my childhood and I cried on the inside.

Oh, man, I can handle Underdog being an actual non-anthro dog, but this... this is terrible!! A, S, and T are not rappers and who wants to bet they will actually say, "Yo, T, etc." Oh, boy.:ohbrother

What Bat said.

I admit, I never had an opinion about Alvin and the Chipmunks much growing up, but nothing deserves this treatment. I weep with all of those who loved the show.

What Bat and Unicron said.

I was watching this (here be a link - content is probably PG-13 in the US, but higher in the UK) a couple of weeks ago - but I never actually thought that some committee of middle-aged blokes in grey suits and a skyscraper somewhere was taking it as a serious suggestion!

The original show wasn't ever one of my favourites, but I still like my memories as they are.

Maybe they could sing a duet with those revamped Thundercats.

Still, it could possibly be worse. After all, the most annoying of the Chip-ettes was even named Britney in the first place...

I never knew the cartoon was from the 1950's. Either I was watching reruns, or it was a revamp of the original show; either way, I think we still have some episodes somewhere on VHS around here.

But yes, the fact that they are dressed in hoodies and other rather stereotypical rapper garb does not please. They were rock music stars, and while I appreciate an update to their look, they could have updated it in accordance with their profession.

This revamping of old shows needs to stop. Some of it is good, but a lot of it is bringing stuff back that should have stayed dead, that were symbols of a generation that has passed its prime. Or at least stay true to the original vision instead of rewriting it like a cheap modern fan fic.

The pic actually gave me a good chuckle when I first saw it, the thought of Gangsta rapping chipmunks is hilarious to me.

Although from what I remember from the cartoon, a modern Alvin as a wannabe rapper seems to fit in with todays kids, Theodore looks about right too, but wasn't Simon supposed to be the geek/nerd of the group?

Indeed, Simon was a genius.

Uh, could someone tell me what the **** they were smoking when they thought this would be a good idea?

I can use this new image they've made for the Chipmunks to get a giggle out of my high, 50-year-old mother and that's about all that terrific idea they had is worth.

Those chipmunks are gonna get beaten up when they sing "Witch Doctors" wearing those.

Before anything else, Sam's Robot chicken clip made me laugh so very much inside. Seth got it, seth got it good.

This poster however. Whut? Seriously, whut. The chipmunks as they were, existed as a mildly entertaining grab onto how music worked at the time, trying to emblazon a bunch of characters and storylines onto what kid's liked in music. Which worked, and I loved them.

And to be fair, I don't see why it can't work again with rap. I think something like this, could be a good idea.

...but not these guys, invent someone else. Have them show up in the audience. Have them show up as disparaging talent show judges, anything. They've had their lime light, they had fun. Don't just push them into a new era like this...

...okay what? I guess the first question would be why is this out there. See this is why some things need to stay in the decade where they were made. The only decent thing I can say about the poster is...no...no that's some really cheesy CGI chipmunks right there. Oh well, there will be an audience nonetheless...

As with a lot of these "reinterpreting for a new audience" things, I don't even see the reasoning behind this (beyond money, of course).

Fans of the original series'll react exactly like we have and avoid it like the plague (unless they haven't heard about the makeover in advance). Most of these people're now parents of the demographic who haven't heard of the series.

And I find it hard to believe that gangsta fluffy chipmunks'll grab even today's lowest common denominator.

I'm just hoping that the seemingly inevitable CGI spin-off cartoon series isn't going to follow...

And thanks to DWUK for cheering me up - but I'd be a lot less worried if this wasn't looking plausible when compared to what we're seeing here.

In first and second grade, the Chipmunks (plus my Lion King soundtrack) were all I ever listened to. Never seen the 50's cartoon, but I loved the 80's one. When first read a while back about this movie, I was pretty sure it'd be a repeat of Garfield.
And after seeing that poster, I still feel that way. =( It looks just as icky as Underdog.

News of this movie has rekindled my childhood.

Well, actually, Transformers did that.

So this movie actually shot my childhood, but lucky for me, my childhood respawns.

Unlucky for me that this movie is a spawn-camping bastard.

Jason Lee looks PISSED. I wonder if when they took his picture for the poster he finally realized what he'd just gotten himself into.

Meh, It can't be any worse than Thomas and the Magic Railroad. A movie that made me cry as everything from my childhood was torn, chewed and spat in my face.

I didn't like The Chipmunks anyway. Which might be the reason for the meh.

Okay, so it still doesn't look that great, but it's infinity times better than that original poster.

I swear if this movie starts a let's-put-helium-in-our-mouths-and-start-talking-like-Alvin, I'm going to laugh at them.

...

Then I'm gonna destroy all copies of this movie that land in my hand.

I fail to see what's "infinity times better" about EATING POO. This looks awful in every sense of the word.

When Jason Lee does the "ALLLLLLVIIIIIIN!" bit, I distinctly saw something tangible fly out of his mouth. I now know that it was the physical manifestation of both his dignity and his credibility.

For all the people who are being told the trailer is not available in their area -

They're so *small*...!

Hopefully the humour might be a touch more thought out than the poo gags though.
