I say metal fans because my experiences with some other metal communities claim that metalhead is a deragotory term (It just means metal fan to me, but I can see the negative connotation that go along with it), but anyway, any fans of Metal music here?

I mean any style of metal (However, for the points and purposes of this discussion, DO NOT bring Nu-Metal here, the name is a misnomer and follows compositional scheme much closer to Hard Rock more than anything else, hence, not metal. Metalcore/Deathcore/etc. are fine, although I have much disdain for those genres, but feel free to discuss them if you wish).

First off, why do I love metal? I dunno... it has an... "Epic" atmosphere about it that rock/rap/etc. just don't have. They aren't bad, but they just don't wet the whistle like metal does. If I listen to rock, my mind goes "Eh, it was okay." Play some metal and this is what is says. "OMGWTFBBQ THAT WAS *ING EPIC BRO". Other music isn't terrible, its just I feel I would rather listen to music that gives me an eargasm than music that is just... decent. And I actually like the lyrical themes in metal, unlike most other styles of music (Yes! Metal has meaningful lyrics! Who knew?!). Plus, you can hear all the instruments in different layers, where as other genres the vocals are the only instrument that has layering (With the exception of Bass in most metal songs, but that's typical. But there are some bands where you can ACTUALLY HEAR THE BASS BRO =O. Those bands tend to be pretty epic from my own experiences), so each part contributes to something instead of the guitarist/drummer/etc. just being supporting pieces for the singer, everything matters. And its why Metal vocalists tend to a have a "Brutal" sound to their voice. First off, it fits the atmosphere of the music, and it just sounds kickass, personally. And yes, they do have actual talent despite what anti-metal people say, hell Rob Halford of Judas Priest has a 4 Octave vocal range. 4 *ing octaves.

As for actual bands, I'm sure I"ve made it clear, I'm a huge Iron Maiden fanboy, but there are others, typically the usual names you expect, Black Sabbath (Dio era >Ozzy Era, but both are awesome in their own ways), Judas Priest, a bit of Motorhead (Just recently got into them though, I need to check out more material), also Megadeth (Rust in Peace = best thrash album. Ever.), early Slayer (First 3 albums were made of pure win, but after that, Kerry's solo's just become unbearable), and Metallica BEFORE they became major sellouts (Sorry, The Black album was a selloutalbum to me and was pretty mediocre as well. Load+ReLoad were terrible rock albums and... I'm surprised they are taken legitimately after St. Anger. Death Magnetic was repititive, but a step in the right direction, but was just a regular heavy metal album, not a trash one like the Metallica fanboys will tell you. First 4 albums were pretty good though and I spin them around once in a while). Also, Manowar is made of uber epic win.

As for some less known bands, Blind Guardian is mother *ing epic, Symphony X is really good for what I've listened to so far, Dream Theater is sweet (I know, lol DT, etc.) and of course, something we all love. Death Metal. >.> Yes, lol death metal, lol death vocals, I know. I rather like them personally, but everyone has their opinion and all. As for actual Death Metal acts, OSDM (Old School Death Metal), Morbid Angel, Immolation, Nocturnus and some Gorguts.

And then we switch over to Technical Death Metal ( A hit or miss genre, but it has Atheist. *ING ATHEIST). As mentioned, Atheist (Unquestionable Presence = Best Death Metal album.... ever. EVER), some other Gorguts, Cynic, Death (lol death, yes I know), and a few others.

So, any other metal fans here on the MoFo ready to discuss metal with me? Please? *Is lonely*

Dimmu Borgir, Meshuggah and Anal C**t FTW! Other than those particular bands and a few others here and there, I don't particularly care for metal genres/sub-genres.

Dimmu Borgir eh? Just now trying to get into Black Metal, I've liked Immortal and Emperor so far, haven't tried DB but I've heard of them before.

Dimmu Borgir eh?

Yup, but I didn't find out about them myself. I was introduced to them. I think metal's okay sometimes, but it's never really been my first love as far as music is concerned. Even within the mind-bogglingly vast rock genre, I tend to gravitate toward psychedelic rock, progressive rock, experimental rock (and experimental music in general) etc. I especially like music without vocals (most of my favourite songs ever are non-lyrical), music with a sense of great intensity and urgency to it and music with an epic ambience to it (and I REALLY mean EPIC, because I think the word 'epic' is definitely overused sometimes).

Well, metal has its share of instrumentals, hell Death Metal is meant to be viewed as that (The harsh vocals are meant to blend in with the music, given its extremely aggressive nature).

Metal definately has an incredible sense of urgency to it, at least when I listen to it (What you may view as a sense of urgency may deviate from my own definition). And I know what you mean by epic being overused, its just I don't quite know any other word to describe what I'm looking for. I think of epic as just being grandiose, completely awesome beyond belief. A lot of metal does that for me, so I tend to use epic for it, especially with Iron Maiden

There's progressive metal too, sense you seem to like prog rock, and there's Stoner Metal (An actual subgenre, I **** you not), which I'm thinking is pretty similar to psychedelic rock but in a metal format... *Shrug*

That's my definition of the word 'epic' as well.

Yeah, I know that stoner metal's an actual sub-genre. No surprises there. Ozric Tentacles (my favourite band of all time) makes music which can often loosely be described as psychedelic rock/space rock. In any case, their music takes me to another place; a better place.

Not my kinda place, but to each his own I suppose >.>

And it guess when it comes to metal, I'm easily amused, given how often I use epic to describe it <.<<br /> A friend of mine on a metal forum reccomended me Ozric Tentacles once before, but I never bothered to check them out... maybe I guess I'll go do that, but I was never big on Stoner type music (Unless you count Black Sabbath...)

I'd be hard-pressed to define the Ozrics as 'stoner' type music. Truth is, I can't pigeonhole their music. It spans many genres, sometimes even in a single song. But I think their music probably only caters to a very acquired taste.

I'll try them out sometime then, granted, I'm sober, but I'll give them a shot anyway. I've got to go through my usual rotations first (I listen to music by band-album, instead of just songs, that's the metal way to do it brah m/)

Going through my iTunes. Let's see what we got here under "metal". There's classics like Alice In Chains, Metallica, Dream Theater, Fates Warning, Queensryche, Symphony X, Tool. And I've got other stuff like Cynic, Opeth, Between The Buried And Me, Planet X, Liquid Tension Experiment, Redemption, Shadow Gallery. And finally, obscure stuff like Animals As Leaders (instrumental space metal ftw), Scale The Summit, Darkwater, Dominici, and etc.

Oh, and Dethklok.

Mercury always seemed cool to me. You know...being liquid at room temp and pressure is mig-*sucker punched* Ouch! I wouldn't say i'm a metal fan[don't really know of any metal bands], but ive heard metal and I don't mind it. I think the band my friends and I are starting are going to play some "metal". Can't remember who sings it, but Down With the Sickness...you guys know that one?

You should be. *continues wiping the blood from his eyes and ears*

I've always found that I usually can't stand anything from a genre that ends in "-core". I'm not one for growling either, but I love it in Opeth nonetheless, which I've always found strange about me. I also go for the more melodic bands over those who merely play to show how technical they can be.

Disturbed isn't metal, as their song structure is closer to Hard Rock than it is metal, at least not to me. But Castor... that was unforgivable. I've already seen that too >=C

And those who hate on growling vocals, just give them a shot. I know its not everyone's favorite type of singing style, but the vocals in it aren't mean to be viewed as beautiful, that's not what they're going for. Its like saying that in order for art to be good, it has to be super pretty with a nice little bowtie on it. Which isn't true, at least to me. Growling vocals are a different way to express themselves, as the music tends to follow more cynical lyrical nature, so a pretty singer doesn't fit that style, wouldn't you think?

I know, I'm just going to get "lol death vocals" by everyone else, but I actually enjoy them when they're done right. And there are good and bad death vocalists, its about whether or not the vocalist can capture the essence of the music in their voice.
Just because you don't like their style doesn't mean it doesn't qualify as singing. Maybe I like it because I'm one of the few people that can catch subtle little things about singer's voices and can actually understand what they say...

Also, Dethklock is Melodiac Death btw

I agree wholeheartedly. Art is expression first and foremost, therefore those who believe that 'art' can only ever be 'beautiful' (an extremely subjective word to begin with) are mistaken (just read a guro manga and you'll know what I mean! ). But in saying all of this, I generally don't like growling vocals - ESPECIALLY growling vocals for the sake of growling vocals. It's not about trying to find beauty in art/music, to me it's simply a personal preference.

Personally, I've always been a fan of Anthrax through all of their incarnations (both Bush and Belladonna). And while I liked the Run DMC/Aerosmith version of 'Walk This Way', to me the definitive mixture of rap and rock/metal will be 'Bring The Noise' with Public Enemy and Anthrax.

Update: Oh yeah, if any metalheads here enjoy anime, I highly highly HIGHLY recommend 'Detroit Metal City'.

Description from Wiki

Soichi Negishi is a shy and gentle young man who dreams of a career as a pop musician. Dreams don't pay the bills, so he's ended up as the lead singer and lead guitarist of a death metal band called "Detroit Metal City." In stage costume he is Johannes Krauser II, rumored to be a terrorist demon from hell, to have killed and raped his parents, to wield his giant death penis with abandon, etc. etc. Negishi despises DMC and all that it stands for, but so help him, he's a terrific performer and can't walk away from that. As DMC's star rises Negishi tries to satisfy both worlds, but can't.

How big does DMC get in that manga? Because realistically, most people can't name a single death metal band that aren't into metal. Actually, if memory serves me correctly, the best selling DM album of all time is "Covenent" by Morbid Angel and it barely has over 100k copies sold. o.o

There isn't nearly enough metallica in this thread. Although, that may just be because quite a few people call Metallica mainstream and avoid it. But whatever, doesn't matter. Also Anthrax are pretty good, though I don't listen to them very much. Megadeth is actually pretty great, though they don't get nearly enough credit for it. Also, Amon Amarth is pretty awesome, and they have music involving norse mythology! I'd list more stuffs, but I feel like the more I list, the more repetitive this'll get. So anyhow, Imma listen to some metals for a while.

I like metal, im not a hardcore metalhead, but there are a number of metal songs i enjoy listening too, of course i'll listen to pretty much anything except modern Rap & country, both of those genres have just,,,just gone to hell in a hand basket, ones sings about nothing but gangs & inuuendo & the other is just abunch of teenage girls singing about how there bo left em..ugg Give me MCHammer & Garth broolks anyday over these modern hacks!

but yea, metal rocks!

There's good rap, a large chunk of it just never sees the mainstream. Same with metal. And pretty much a lot of other genres, I guess.

September's going to be great for music. New Alice In Chains, Dethklok, among other things both metal and non-metal.

Nice, nice! Interestingly enough, the word 'ozric' from the band name 'Ozric Tentacles' is actually a Norse name meaning 'divine energy'. Also, where the hell ya been man?!

.... THAT... is your example for 'good rap'? Not Grandmaster Flash, not KRS-One, not Run-DMC, not N.W.A., not Outkast and not Public Enemy, but MC HAMMER?!

Anywho, back to the Metal topic, Brutal Legend is looking like a big fat love letter to metal fans.

Metallica's first four albums were enjoyable, but I don't care for anything past that, I don't care for mediocre rock (I know, its just opinions, but that's how I honestly feel about BlackAlbum/Load/ReLoad, and please don't get me started on the atrocity of St. Anger, I don't see how ANYONE can defend that).

And if you want to talk about bands with epic Norse Mythology... MANOWAR EPIC WAR HYMNS
