Okay, so I'll go to Google and search for something.  The list of sites come up as usual, and I click on one.  Instead of going to the site, I get redirected to a different search site and it sometimes causes my browser to crash.

Could I have a virus?

See if you also have unwanted browser extensions.

I did a System Restore so the issues I was having before aren't happening now.

I guess it was some malware. Strange that my anti-virus didn't pick it up.

I recommend using Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free and can run on even XP.

I'll second MSSE.   But add a helping of Spybot Search and Destroy to the fray.

A similar thing happened to me recently upon downloading "PageRage" by Yontoo, which is a program that allows for you to customize your facebook layout. I assume other Yontoo software will give you this sort of a virus. The search engine it always redirected me too was "BigSeekPro"

Not particularly related but I spent a good couple of hours uninstalling and reinstalling Avast Antivirus yesterday because it went nuts and started blocking me from every site which wasn't google. Including Avast.com. Reckoned every site was infected by malware. Including this forum in fact! It also wouldn't let me update to v6.

Think it was a rogue update or something I don't know but I upgraded to v6 manually and after the third reinstillation it actually worked. So I'm all cool now.

Bit annoying because I quite like Avast otherwise. Well that and the fact it bellows at you in this annoying american lady voice all the time but I can live with that one 😀

Trudi: install the Pirate English language for avast. It's brilliant.

Cool! I use avast! Free anti-virus as well.

However, my previous stuff - free Comodo firewall - has been replaced by Webroot Internet Security Complete, and it's done a good job so far, and isn't as much a resource hog as Comodo was.
