Can you tell me anything about Killeen, Texas? I've received a job offer that would require me to move there, and I'm kinda on the fence about it. Any info you could give me on the area would be greatly appreciated.

It's in the middle of nowhere and if I know anything about Midwest towns in the middle of nowhere (Osawattamee, KS or Nowata, OK) is that if you value your sanity, stay away.

It's a military base near (20 min from) Waco which is one of my least favorite Texas towns ever. The only good thing would be being an hour or two from Austin and about two and a half from Dallas. It's not in the "middle of nowhere" however unless you're a snob who thinks towns with less than 50,000 people don't count.

Edit: When the HELL did anyplace in Texas (or OK for that matter) become the Midwest?

Cause Oklahoma dosen't fit in with the South/West (to me) and Texas is big enough to lump itself in whereever it wants to. :O.

Yea stairmaster, I live in Denver, Colorado...part of the USA.

And middle of nowhere is still the middle of nowhere...except for Dallas/Ft Worth area (Not all that great an area to begin with), what is the middle of Texas known for, other than being a king sized target for tornadoes?

:cuckoo

I suppose it depends. I don't see the whole state as the southwest...portions like say where San Antonio or El Paso is what I thought as the Southwest...

Unless they pony up the money, as of now I probably won't take the job. Don't get me wrong, the closeness to Austin excites me. It's close to a major city than my current location ( 3 hours from Albuquerque), and I've always wanted to go to SXSW. But the job and pay are too similar to my current one to justify such a move, so it's probably off the table.

Thanks for the scouting report though!

Um... Nowata is pretty dang close to Bartlesville and not THAT far from Tulsa (one of the biggest places in hickville). 20 min from Bartlesville and 45 from Tulsa IIRC. I would know as I have an inlaw buried there and two living in Bartlesville. o.o

ON TOPIC:

Killeen is a military town. IIRC LOTS of titty bars and such. High crime rate. Kinda like Lawton, OK or Junction City, KS. I'm sure it has plenty of stores and such being that close to Ft. Hood, so you don't have to worry about a long drive drive to the closest mall or wal-mart. You're a good 2 and half hours from Ft. Worth though. Still close enough to drive over there and visit on a day off or something.

Any of our military brats on here been stationed at Hood? I don't think Fex was but that was too long ago for my brain to recall. >.>; If I catch Himmy on I'll ask him, I'm pretty sure he was there last for awhile.

I won't even argue with Torn about what is located in Central Texas, because I'm sure he can wiki demographics of Waco, Austin, Temple, San Antonio and etc all by himself. But I do have to say that I'm still amazed by the idea that towns within 20 minutes of mid-size/large cities are considered the "middle of nowhere". Perhaps someone needs to take a trip to West Texas to get an idea of what not seeing even a gas station for HOURS is like.

I'm way on the outskirts of Austin in what is gradually transforming from the boonies to the city and even before we got our very own Taco Bell (it made the news!) we still had over 50,000 people living in the county.

What Rico said about the demos of Killeen, although I've heard some rumors that the town is getting less sleazy. I haven't seen it for myself though.

Srol, what is Albequerque like? I've heard that it's nice and I'm actually looking at some job offers there.

Edit FYI: Texans consider El Paso as West Texas and San Antonio and south as the Valley, but we consider our state itself to be South Central, which (for better or worse) we also consider Oklahoma to inhabit.

Yup, for us Wichita is a "Quick Trip" to the Mall. It's about a hundred and forty miles round trip. lol

I hear ya : Just like driving through MT. 7 hours to get from one City to another -.- and every small town in between is two stop signs and a main street >> Riiiidiculous. >> Only the biggest waste of space for a state ever. Least Alaska has Caribou -.-.

Astrid: I've been to Albuquerque a handful of times. And I love it. The city kinda has a little bit of everything. There's a downtown area with some really nice bars (they even shut down the main street there on weekends), there's a college town with some very neat shops (and one of my favorite thrift stores ever, Buffalo Exchange), And from what I hear, the apartments are cheaper in Albuquerque then they are up here in Farmington (when I first moved here I paid $500 a month with utilities included for a one bedroom, and everyone said I could probably take $100 off that in Albuquerque).

Not to mention Santa Fe is just half an hour to the North (and in a year or so will be connected through commuter rail), and Santa Fe is one of those places where it's AMAZING to visit, but living there would kinda suck.

The only downside is the isolation. You are in the middle of the desert. I-25 and I-40 do run through the city, but the nearest metropolis is Phoenix, seven + hours away. Plus, the ALbuquerque airport, although nice and pleasing to the eye, is very lacking in flights. If you're sticking to the west coast, it's not a problem, but whenever I fly home to New York, I can never get a direct flight.

But yeah, if I was oferred a job in ALbuquerque, I'd definitely take it (it wouldn't take much though, given my current circumstances)

EDIT: It should be noted that as much as I love Albuquerque, Albuquerque does not love me. The first time I went there, I almost got arrested for public urination, and the most recent time I went there I got thrown out of a bar for being too awesome.

I need to visit New Mexico personally...Colorado has lost part of its Western heritage and feels blah now.

And Astrid, I've been to almost every part of Texas except the El Paso area...Kansas is probably worse off though...:cuckoo

Rico...true Nowata is close enough to Tulsa but the town is just so blah...you feel like it's in the middle of nowhere.

Srol: Public urination!!! *HI^5*

Now here's the million dollar question: Did you remember peeing, or was it told to you via friends and eyewitnesses...

Oklahoma IS the best spot for storm spotting. Texas storms are probably the same, but Oklahoma's rolling prairies really make them more amazing to look at than trying to watch between buildings and hellish suburbia. Watching grass blow is also alot nicer than watching cactus and straw blow around.

No I remember it very well, because I was so self-conscious and worried about it. That usuall is not my M.O. I had been searching the bar for a bathroom, because I knew they were closing soon, but what I thought was a bathroom was really the back door, and the bouncer wouldn't let me in. Within the next 30 seconds, every bar in the city closed, and my hotel was still a taxi ride away.

...I....I had no choice...my...my bladder...

*bursts into tears*

I didn't remember getting kicked out of the bar until the next morning when I openned my wallet to pay for breakfast. I thought I had $50 in there, but I had el zilcho, and I needed my friends to explain it to me.

P.S. The money actually had nothing to do with why I was kicked out. Apparently I gave it all to our cab driver as a tip after th $12 cab ride back to our hotel.

I was stationed in san antonio for bmt, and in wichita falls, northern texas. both places were flat and boring, lol. at least i was close enough to take a bus to bother rico, so i guess it wasnt that bad, but even the rolling plains of where rico lives was worlds better than wichita falls...
