i dont know if anyone talked about this yet or not but here's the topic about these gorgeous dolls:
the fancy popular ball jointed dolls! which are known as BJD or U-noa Quluts are these freakishly attractive dolls, that are anime like and best of all "customized". you can buy parts for them and put them together, the same idea as "angelic layer" if you saw that anime, or just think of it as a character customization in rpgs but done with real dolls. either male of female dolls.
you choose your doll's body, hair, eyes, clothes, head (to get the expression you want) and by adding painting to the face you can make a master piece. here's an example of the parts:
and the end result is you can make your own anime like doll with your style or cosplay your doll into a famous anime or game character: here's more pics of these dolls people made...
animes and games all attract us with their cute characters and these dolls are no less cute i'd love to customize my own BJD but unfortunetly these dolls are expensive to my knowledge. what about the rest of you what do you think of them and does anyone have one?
Them dolls creep me out. Like baby dolls. I just can't stand either of them.
I can't really explain it since anime-style is hardly realism but barbies and stuff like that just straddle on the right side of cartoonish to not bother me.
I think it's the eyes.
you're not the only one dear, lots of people complain about the BJDs eyes being creepy and just like you, i do get scared of dolls i put my barbie dolls in the drawer, still i own dolls cause i love them. arent those clothes hair and just about everything so amazingly pretty with these dolls? i want to have at least 2 guy dolls and one girl doll XD
what about you bunanigans? would you like to own them? you dont have to keep them in your room.
There's the factor of the "uncanny valley" that makes humans uncomfortable when they see things that look close to human, but look just a bit off. This is why for the most part Pixar characters look generally lovable and awesome; they're cartoony enough usually not to fall into the valley, while mannequins that are made to look as "realistic" as possible often come off as darned creepy. We have had an SPA theme on the subject.
That and all the horror movies about toys coming to life. Even in real life, it's just darn creepy to have anything with eyes staring at you, sometimes regardless of how real they are.
Those... those eyes...
And now I have the song 'Creepy Doll' stuck in my head
Having horrible flashbacks of when I was terrified of Ken dolls...
*shudders*

no
So haunted doll thread?
okay that's it you asked for it, here's more BJDs:
I don't know if I should be disturbed, afraid, or both.

I think it's the lack of movement that's the problem here, and perhaps the lack of emotion. If you sit and stare at them long enough, you realise that they really are very similar to the sort of face style you'd find in a Japaneese RPG, which rarely comes across as scary. But in those games, the faces are animated and moving, and they usually bear some kind of expression, be it a smile, or a frown, or crying.
These, while not looking all that different in appearance, tend to have no expression whatsoever, and that deadpan 'blank' look is part of what is so creepy. Also the fact that they are very 'plasticy' (or porcelain) and immobile, the skin not moving as the bones beneath pull on it...indeed, the bones themselves not moving either. I think it's those elements that make them so creepy.
If these dolls had reallistic elasticated skin over a subdermal 'bone' frame which reacted and contorted like real skin, and could be shaped into different expressions, I think they'd be perfectly fine.
These things are creepy as heck. I saw them all over the place in Akiba and it creeped me out really badly even then. I hoped to have supressed my memories of them but well done for bringing back the nightmares.
Psx, any idea on how much that Aegis figure costs? Because good golly does it look nice. =D
Apparently they've been out of circulation for a while, but according to this site they'll be back in stock in late December. Prices seem to hover around 35 bucks. You might be able to find it cheaper elsewhere, I'm no expert on these things.
There's also a Metis Figma coming ("Sister, wait for me!"), but they're already sold out.

no no no no i'd get more creeped out, honestly i think dolls scare me when they look more like people. the BJDs i posted and the doll pic psxphile posted are both well made but his doesnt scare me cause it looks cartoonish where as the BJDs creepe me out cause they look alive, the lips, the corner of the eye.. even the eyebrows.. these BJDs are almost flawless dolls.
i really admire them for their beauty and love to own and costumize some of them
although you put up a curious point weaith, i dont know if they'd look less creepy if they moved.... that's an interesting point.
btw psx, the metis doll looks better than the first they're such fun models.
... and sorry packamac for brining the nightmares back to you
