Updated: 9:33 p.m. ET Oct 1, 2007LOS ANGELES - Britney Spears continuing downward spiral took a devastating turn Monday when she was ordered to relinquish custody of her children by a judge who had cited her drug-and-alcohol-fueled lifestyle.
Superior Court Judge Scott M. Gordon ruled that that ex-husband Kevin Federline will take Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1, beginning Wednesday until further order of the court.
The Web site X17 is reporting that Spears surrendered the children to Federline's bodyguards on Monday afternoon.
The order stemmed from an unspecified oral motion made by Federlines lawyers and was handled in a closed-door hearing. The judges order did not state the reason for the change in custody and he ordered all transcripts of the proceedings sealed.
Phone messages left for representatives of Spears and Federline were not immediately returned Monday.
Last month, Gordon said Spears engaged in habitual, frequent and continuous use of controlled substances and alcohol and ordered her to undergo random drug and alcohol testing twice a week as part of her ongoing custody dispute with Federline.
Spears also was previously ordered to meet weekly with a parenting coach who was to observe and report back to the court about her parenting skills. Both Spears and Federline must complete the courts Parenting Without Conflict class.
Spears, 25, and Federline, 29, were married in October 2004. She filed for divorce last November and it became official in July. The two have joint custody of their sons, but Federline is seeking a greater share of custody.
Troubles become tabloid fodder
Since Spears became single, her troubles have played out in the tabloids. First she was photographed at various Hollywood hotspots partying hard with Paris Hilton appearing drunk and out-of-control. Some photos captured the pop star without panties. Then Spears shaved her head as paparazzi captured the moment, beat a car with an umbrella and ended up spending a month in rehab.
An MTV Video Music Awards performance last month meant to herald her comeback was universally panned, with Spears appearing spaced-out and lethargic and, in some eyes, less than buff. The following week, Spears management firm dropped her and her divorce lawyer resigned.
She then was charged with misdemeanor counts of hit-and-run and driving without a valid license for allegedly crashing into a parked car in August.
The driving offenses likely compelled the judge to issue Mondays orders, said New York divorce lawyer Raoul Felder.
She was driving without a license with a child in the car, he said. You can put aside the in and out of rehab, the shaving her head. But this? When a judge went out on a limb for her? Theres no going back.
Though Spears must relinquish physical custody of the children until further ruling from the court, she and Federline still share legal custody.

Child services did something right? Miracles do still happen. I feel sorry for her kids. Britney needs to be spayed, because the gene pool is already muddy as it is.
It's an odd state of affairs when we're considering Kevin as the one who's a responsible parent.
I'm not quite sure how I feel about this. On one hand, I'm happy the kids are going to a slightly better household. On the other hand, taking away her children is certainly not going to help Britney's mental state.
I know she brought it on herself, but eh... I can't party when a parent's children are basically taken away from them. She'll still be able to visit, right?

And yet the world keeps on turning, I don't care about any star's life in Hollywood, it's all drama to keep them in the spotlight.
I stopped following Britney's crap a long time ago, but this one has me satisfied.
You know, I don't even know what she looks like o.o; mainly because she changes her appearance all the time. You have no idea how many times her boobs have changes sizes too... XD every time someone shows me a picture of her, i totally dont remember her looking that way.
Anyway, kids are not for her.
It's sad how far she's fallen.
I'll admit, I liked her and her music when she first hit the music scene. But the way she is now is nothing like she used to be.

Maybe it is best to not think about it. She's been stuck in these kinds of embarassing situations for far too long, thats been tarneshing her image with every move she makes. She obviously doesn't think much at all anymore.
perhaps this will help put off all those celeb-crazy kids out there who seem to think that being famous + rich = happiness.
i bet the media is loving this.. they put someone up and up onto some pedistol (sp?) then take great delight in knocking them down again. oo; i hope i never have the misfortune of attracting their attention.
Actually, I was expecting this all along. Rehab, breakdowns, partying, the baldness ... well yeah.
I'm happy that she lost custody of the children, like she really cared. Maybe soon she'll get back on track. Really, I don't care about it. I'm just hoping that Kev won't make another rap song... Ugh
