"First MTV stops showing music videos, now this? Cartoon Network is sticking with the "Network" portion of its name, but ditching the strictly "Cartoon" bit, the company announced today. Nineteen new projects were announced, and less than half will be hand-drawn.

"These exciting new projects represent the next phase in Cartoon Network's ambitious, ongoing strategy to re-invent the network and re-energize our youth business overall," said Stuart Snyder.

These new non-cartoons will start airing in the coming 2009-2010 season and feature reality and scripted programs, most of which sound like pint-sized versions of programs currently airing on other networks.

Highlights: The Othersiders is a mini-Ghost Hunters, with five friends exploring scary places; Destroy Build Destroy is like Human Wrecking Balls, with two teams blowing stuff up; Dude, What Would Happen is a Mythbusters clone; Bobb'e Says takes the ridiculously funny child actor Bobb'e J. Thompson (Human Giant, Role Models) in his own take of America's Funniest Home Videos.

Also announced was a live-action Ben 10: Alien Force movie, a Scooby-Doo! prequel telefilm, and a full CG movie titled Firebreather!

Don't worry all you glassy-eyed college students--it doesn't look like the late-night Adult Swim block will be affected by any of this."

This is blasphemy. Many have thought Cartoon Network's quality has been declining over the past decade or so, and I believe this is the nail in the coffin right here. One of my childhood favorites has now been bastardized in order to appeal the mainstream. :'(

Yikes. o_0 Never thought I'd see them take it down this badly.

I've not watched TV in a few years, but I used to love my Cartoon Network. This is not Blasphemy...and no, this is not Sparta. This is just plain confusing. I can't believe this is going on. o_0

So basically Cartoon Network is copying the Disney Channel?

Don't worry, it's just a sign of the times changing. We are all starting to get to the paradigm shift of generations where we find ourselves entirely unable to relate to the younger generation.

Seeing all that the kids are watching now makes me understand why my dad was so fatigued enduring Doug, Gargoyles, DBZ, Gundam Wing and such. As quality as the shows appear to me, even as an adult, the standards set by my youth vastly differ from the standards in my dad's generation.

The scary thought is... all this Hannah Montana, That's So Raven, Jonas Brothers stuff... that will be a yard stick for nostalgic quality in some people's lives.

I'd say "That's depressing"... but we're Sonic fans. Our own yard stick has eroded, melted and eaten away our arms. We have no right to talk.

But it's the principle of thing

Unless they're changing the station's name with it, not showing cartoons on Cartoon Network is basically........ so yeah, you know.

What makes you think that any of these shows will be a success? The TV industry is collapsing and reality shows are made not to boost ratings but to save money.

You're underestimating the intelligence of kids. In general there are not many hits that are hard to understand, other than Disney Channel crap, and I suspect their success is entirely a product of the brand name.

If Firebreather! is anything to do with the comic of the same name, I'll be watching.

I agree with Craig - although I've been complaining about the progressive downward spiral of the entertainment industry for literally years, and particularly for children. I'm not concerned that these things'll have nostalgia value, so much as the lowest common denominator getting lower and lower as people's minds dumb down with each new yardstick.

That alone gives me comfort. I agree with what Craig has said, expanding it to pretty much everything we all watched/played/touched/whatever-ed when we were young.

Words...

You pretty much nailed it. As sad as it is to see this channel go from "showing old ass cartoon shows and rerunning them to death" to "struggling to make their own home grown shows", then straight to "completely successful with new shows and different blocks", and now to this, I understand that we no longer actually are THE VOICE of this crap anymore. As much as I'm crying on the inside, I have to sit down and go, "huh... well, I really honestly haven't watched CN in a long ass time unless it was AS".

So, times are-a-changin'. I also blame the lack of Saturday Morning cartoons. I mean, at one point in my life, that was my one main reason why I actually wanted to wake up early on a freakin' Saturday.

And don't you wave that Sonic stick at me. I'm here anymore just for the friends and the community. Sonic can kiss my ass.

Agreed with Vec and Sam.

It's slightly different from, to use Craig's example, the decline of Sonic, which is just one instance in a huge genre. Cartoons themselves, an entire genre, have been asked to take a backseat to other entertainment styles (anime, video games, Internet browsing, et al.). Though that itself is lamentable, the real problem is that, in a world where there are so many media trying to explore various facets of human existence intelligently, too many cartoons have failed to cross the threshold of toilet humour in this age. I'm mystified by whatever thought process CN execs have that makes them believe that a show with two teams detonating things will somehow stop the haemorrhaging. Bailing out water won't save a half-sunken ocean liner.

*AFTER EMERGING FROM THE VOTEX AT R'LYEH*
Sadly, this seems like more of a stab at Disney Channel's success than an inevitable decline in quality. The plus side of all this is that Vecky-ums is probably right; these shows'll flop. I dunno what that means for the network though. Do we want that to happen?

All I really want is something as quality as show like Samurai Jack. What happened to their internal studio anyway?

I figured it'd come to something like this sooner or later. I love to watch cartoons when I get the chance, and it's usually older cartoon shows that I watch and like, and I used to watch CN all the time. Once all the stuff I liked got replaced with crap, I stuck around for the two or three shows that remained and watched other channels instead. After Toonami got killed off, the only reason I still watched it was because of AS. I haven't watched CN for a while now, but chances are I won't be turning there again unless the adult swim block is on. And there aren't many things I watch there either.

Also hugz for Falcon for mentioning Samurai Jack, though I highly doubt there will be another show as great as Samurai Jack. I think Nickelodeon's Avatar was sort of up there, too.

I suppose I should be grateful that the only thing on CN I watch now is Transformers Animated. There's nothing else I care to watch.

Well, I watch quite a bit on there-Secret Saturdays, Ben 10 series, Bleach, TFA, Batman: Brave and the Bold, and Naruto, but really this aint much of a surprise as they haven't been all cartoons all the time in a year or two what with live-action movies, Tim and Eric, etc. Anyway, as long as they show Bleach and get to Naruto: Shippuden and hopefully at least one more season of TFA, I'll be fine.

I used to watch Bleach, but now I'm often too tired to stay up and watch it. I generally have to wake up at 8:00 Sunday morning, and I need at least six or seven hours of sleep.

Ah, I see! Well, you could always tape it, provided you have a VCR, DVD recorder, etc. that is.

I've thought of doing that, but I never get around to it.
