Already, I know. It's not even Thanksgiving here in the states!
In spite of all this political correctness bullcrap, we've started hanging up Toys For Tots donations around the UPS store, hanging up lights, and of course, blasting Christmas music through the computer speakers.
Now, I personally LOVE Christmas songs. Can't get sick of them. There's a certain joy and life to them that always makes me happy and dance with anticipation for the season they sing about.
Which leads me to my question: what is your favorite Christmas song and why? Or conversely, what is your -least- favorite? What kind of songs make you wanna choke someone? Which ones always get you singing? Extra points to those who don't just write two words and leave it at that. 😀 Discouraging one-liners FTW!
I'll answer in a bit, I want to hear your responses first.

Iiiii'm dreaming, of a White... Christmas~
Don't know why I like it so much but it's probably for the same reason I like What A Wonderful World 😀
I dunno, all the Christmas songs are blending in my mind and I can't pick one out. I've never really liked Christmas songs, due to how crappy the holidays are in my family (arguments, yay!) so they aren't a big part of my life. =/ All versions of Jingle Bells are awesome though.
Slade m/
It's one of those songs I've been brought up with. You always have a soft spot for that sort. My Mum's had this same CD for years and years and plays it every Christmas, and Slade's on it 😮
Santa Baby is the best Christmas song.
I also like The Christmas Song (Chestnuts roasting on an open fire...) and that one TLC song from the 90's about having a very Merry Christmas?
(I had never heard of Slade until I started spending Christmas in England, I still don't get the appeal.)
(What is a Chestnut?)
O Holy Night is probably my favorite. Super old but a classic.
1) Silent Night by Bing Crosby.
2) Blue Christmas by Elvis.
3) "Please Christmas Don't Be Late" by Alvin and the Chipmunks
Primus, I can't even begin to decide my favorite Christmas song. Though, my least favorite is "Christmas Shoes" not so much because it's a bad song, it just that I can't listen to it all the way through without crying.
I'm a huge fan of Christmas music my self, but I haaate having it play 24/7 starting two weeks before Thanksgiving. I'd consider myself a more classical Christmas guy (Nat King Cole and Bing Crosby ftw), but
My absolute favorite is 'The Gift' by Aselin Debison. Such a strong voice for such a young girl.
not allowed
In a close 2nd would be Nat King Cole. Such a moving voice. Booming, yet comforting. The duet with his daughter (done after his death) is my favorite though.
Bing comes in third... I just love his entire Christmas album... And him and David Bowie are awesome m/
Another favorite is Amy Grant's 'Breath of Heaven'... Just a powerful song. Oh, and'Grown-Up Christmas List'.
You guys are lucky... This is the World Premiere of Hiro and the Honors Spanish 4 Holiday Singers redition of Oh Come All Ye Faithful m/
EDIT: >= @ Sailor Unicorn... That is the worst song ever... So @$%#ing depressing... Soldier's Christmas is less sad, IMO.
Father Christmas by the Kinks, I don't think it's possible for me to listen to that song and feel unhappy. It's energetic beat and cynical lyrics have a way of fitting any of the hills, valleys, twists, turns, loops and corkscrews you may experience on the emotional roller coaster that we know as the modern holiday season. If I'm stressed at Christmas time, I listen to Father Christmas. If I'm depressed and angst-ridden, I listen to Father Christmas. If I'm bitter and cynical, Father Christmas. Having a good time? Father Christmas. It's like an all-purpose mood lifter for the season, please note I generally like the season.
More recently, All I Want for Christmas is You, Mariah Carey version, has entered my list.
In the realm of hymns, Silent Night works for me, as well as Oh Come All Ye Faithful and Oh Holy Night.
Twisted Sisters 'A Twisted Christmas' is my favourite Christmas album, no contest, with either 'Oh Come All Ye Faithful' or 'Heavy Metal Christmas (12 Days)' being my favourite song.
I'm not sure these are the right names, but...
Let it Snow
I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas
And...
What's This?! from the Nightmare Before Christmas.
Me and my drum
On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me
A partridge in a pear tree.
On the second day of Christmas my true love gave to me
Two turtle doves,
And a partridge in a pear tree.
On the third day of Christmas my true love gave to me
Thre-- *shot*
I don't know why, but I have an uncanny likeness to this song. ^.^
Also, I second with "What's This?!" from TNBC.
Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) - Darlene Love. Used in the opening to "Gremlins", fact fans.
"Merry Christmas Everyone" - Shakin' Stevens. Just nice and upbeat and I don't mind singing about snow, even when I hate the stuff.
"Ring Out Solstice Bells" - Jethro Tull. A lovely little melody, with the bells, the flute, etc.
Obviously I also love Slade, Band Aid, Wizzard, even the Wombles
DW
Weird Al's Christmas at Ground Zero. Hilarious take on bomb scares with a video full of clips from "Duck and Cover" videos. It kinda fell out of print, tho, after 9/11 changed the meaning of ground zero.
I am personally liking Psychostick's "Flesh Eating Rollerskate Holiday Joyride". Death Metal + Comedy + Christmas = gold.
On the first day of Christmas, Blizzard gave to me a brand new SCV
On the second day of Christmas, Blizzard gave to me 2 Terran Wraiths and a brand new scv

On the eigth day of Christmas, Blizzard gave to me 8 Archons burning, 7 Zerglings sliming, 6 Zealots fighting, 5 newborn Queens, 4 Hyrdalisks, 3 Marines, 2 Terran Wraiths, and a brand new SCV.
On the ninth day of Christmas, Blizzard gave to me 9 Battle Cruisers, power overwhelming, 7 Zerglings sliming, 6 Zealots fighting, 5 newborn Queens, 4 Hyrdalisks, 3 Marines, 2 Terran Wraiths, and a brand new SCV.

A couple of ones I enjoy which haven't been mentioned yet:
The Night Santa went Crazy (Weird Al) - a nice twist on the traditional christmas songs
Carol of the Bells (Trans-Siberian Orchestra) - not one which I really associate with Christmas, but a good tune nonetheless
In the deep mid-winter - a traditional carol which I feel is formed really well musically, and still remember from my choral days
Fairytale of New York (The Pogues feat. Kirsty MacColl) - for me, I feel this captures a real essence of Christmas. Although it isn't exactly sugar-coated the way a lot of Christmas tunes are, there's still genuine warmth and feeling mixed in with the sentimentality.
I don't really play favorites when it comes to traditional Christmas carols; they all serve their purpose of putting me in the Christmas spirit. When it comes to less traditional Christmas songs, however, Trans-Siberian Orchestra is without a doubt my favorite. Christmas has never been so epic before them.
I've taken to playing Christmas carols on my ocarina at random. I'm trying to learn a new one every day.

Christmas bells are ringing!
Somewhere else... not here.
In all seriousness, I dislike Christmas songs because I dislike Christmas. Christmas is the merging of three forces I dislike: Religion, sickening sentimentality, and extreme commercialism. The song I can stand least is Christmas Shoes because it embodies all of the above.
I heard my first Xmas song on the radio yesterday. Magic was playing Wham's "Last Christmas". It was 21st November, people - they have more than a month until Xmas! *shakes head* I'm a big fan of not digging out the compilation tape / CD until 1st December.
Trimanus, I'd forgotten the Carol of the Bells - that's probably the only carol I really like. It has such a lovely melody, even if it does get ruined by use in TK Maxx adverts...
DW
As far as favourites go, I absolutely HATE Christmas music. It's played incessantly, all over the place. It's sickeningly everpresent for the entire month of December. I'll be GLAD when the PC crowd finally bans Christmas, because then I won't hear Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer one more time. It was funny the first time I heard that song. It was amusing the second time I heard that song. But every single place I go to plays that damn song, and because I've heard it so much, it just gets on my nerves. So that's probably my least favourite.
On a less grr note, Trans-Siberian Orchestra. That's probably the only Christmas music I listen to.
And not one other person here's a fan of Fairytale of New York by The Pogues and the late, great Kirsty McColl?
I'm shocked!
Hearing that and Chris de Burgh singing A Spaceman Came Travelling on the radio (or over the speakers at a shopping centre, or just generally out and about) are two of the ways that I class the countdown to Christmas as having officially arrived. 🙂
Ah, "They got cars big as bars, they've got rivers of gold, but the wind blows right through you, it's no place for the old..."
That is indeed on my compilation tape and the volume does indeed get pumped up
I can never see "Spaceman..." as an Xmas song, because it was on a compilation tape in my parents' car (and is now in mine somewhere, some 20 years on!) along with others of his hits. To me it was about as Christmassy as Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl". I mean, I know it is Christmassy and has a better claim to it than "The Power of Love".
What's with that anyway? "I'll protect you from the hooded claw..." Is he singing to Penelope Pitstop?
Oh and I forgot Jona Lewie's "Stop the Cavalry". "Bang goes another bomb on another town..."
DW
Oh so incredibly ashamed of myself to forget my TRUE favourite Christmas album. Please ignore my previous post, and bask in the glory of the greatest Christmas album ever.
The Christmas NiGHTS OST.
That is all.
I also forgot "Song for Ten" as written by Murray Gold. No offence to Neil Hannon (?), but his version isn't Xmassy enough. I wish that could be released.

Apologies for double posting, but this seemed like the best place to post:

Nice to see my favourite radio station is going with the original version.
DW
I hadn't heard about this before it was mentioned on local radio earlier today (I avoid Radio One like the plague) - I only heard about the reversal.
I don't know whose idea that censorship was, but I find it hard to believe that they didn't expect a backlash from messing with such an iconic song.
For Christmas songs, I tend to like the old Carols really, none of this teeny bop style which has come into 'fashion' nowadays.
The old songs, when sung by chiors, or solo with powerful voices really work for me.
So definitely the old classics.
(And of course, whoever decided that Mr Blobby, Bob the Builder and the Crazy Frog had to become Christmas #1's needs to be shot)
'Jingle Bell Rock' by Bobby Helms.
I don't know why I love that song, but whenever I hear it I act a damn fool and begin to bust out "The Carlton" XD;
Least favourite Christmas Song would have to be '8 Days of Christmas' by Destiniy's Child.
It just sounded so...
Quote:
On the 8th day of Christmas my baby gave to me
a pair of cloey shades & a diamond belly ring
... Tacky! XD;;
