I've heard a lot of mention about new characters, so I'm going to try and list them all and see if there's really that many. I'm going to start at Sonic Adventure 2 and go from there. Don't take that to mean I'm going in order or anything, I'm just going to start my memory at Sonic Adventure 2 then hop and skip around from there.
Notice Gamma's on the list.
List
Shadow
Rouge
Emerl
Blaze
Chip
Marine
Gamma
Omega
Eggman Nega
Silver
Elise
Gemerl
Void
That pink fairy thing from Sonic Shuffle whose name I forget
Tikal
Chaos
Cream and Cheese
Big
That villain from Sonic chronicles... Ix, I think his name was. Not sure, though
Shahra
King Arthur
That Evil Genie
So that's like... what? 22?
I geuss that's alot. Sort of. Most of those characters are temporary and don't appear that much so I'm going to count only the regularly appearing ones now... Shadow, Rouge, Silver and Cream makes 4... 5 if you count Blaze.
I added Silver and not Blaze since I think he'll probably appear in more future titles than her...
So, um... in conclusion, I think we've taken on *some* characters as the series has progressed but not GAGGLES AND GAGGLES OF CHARACTERS as you guys seem to have insinuated. (Or maybe you were exxagerating, I dunno.) I'm referring to the more permanent characters... not the one-time characters which don't appear much.
Personally, I don't think the new characters are taking anything away from enjoying the game, personally I look forward to them. It's sort of refreshing, you know. All the different personalities and how they interact with the old characters and such. I actually sort of look forward to them.
I think it's more how a lot of people don't find the gameplay or plot enjoyable or fun. I geuss the new characters may have a role in certain people`s displeasure, but I think that's more of a Your Mileage May Vary thing. They don't seem to be taking anything AWAY from the game, for me. They may take the focus off the main characters a little, but I don't think the old characters have been neglected or anything... they appear enough, don't they? Sonic,Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Eggman seem to appear onscreen enough, to me.
It seems like it's more how the games are made that leads a lot of people to not enjoy them, rather than the characters. They don't really take away anything.
Though certain people seem to take issue with them, so maybe they could explain their reasons?
I mean, REALLY?
Oh, you caught us, we're a Sonic forum that doesn't care about Sonic.
I still care. ;_;
I just wish someone would give him the injection of steroids, viagra and sex, that he desperately needs to become good again.
Nonsense! *tail whips one, Mister Johnathan Taylor* That is what got Sonic into this sorry position... Pleasing the fans the only way SEGA would let him
Yup, I still care.
i don't any more D:
I still care about Sonic and his many friends. His many, many friends.

Good call, Fang. Anyway, yes, I still care about that cobalt blue anthropomorphic hedgehog. Just not as much as I used to.
Nope. Sonic's dead. It's the community that keeps me going, and the ability to check most of the games out, for free, before release, that keeps me peeking my head in to see if things have changed.
And they haven't. And they won't.
The only thing that lives on with me is the Sonic "art style". That's about it.

And they tried to kill that in SonicNEXT the bombing of which got it back in Unleashed.
...I do. .__. I'm currently getting close to beating Sonic Chronicles!
Well since I really loved Unleashed I think my answer is pretty clear.
I just now "beat" Sonic Chronicles. o__O; @ the ending.
I really enjoyed the game, though. I haven't played an RPG in a long time, and I really liked the call back to the first Sonic Adventure.
I still care.

They didn't bring it back really, Eggmanland is the exception. Its just really stylised stylised versions of real world places.
yes i stll care about sonic, not as much as disgaea....but a lot more then the other stuff i like....but i must admit i care alot more about the sonic comics then the games.
I do, Dagnabbit - the Hedgie-love won't die in my heart...it just won't hold a candle to my Ace Attorney or Snake, Rattle and Roll love these days. :3
I don't care about Sonic, i just like voting in polls.
I care. I care about how horrible each new sonic games gets. I care, and it makes me cry at night knowing that there will be another orgy of new friends in each new sonic game. At least sonic team knows how to make at least one good game. I'm talking about Phantasy Star Universe, ;D
I care. I don't want to care, but I do. Friggin' nostalgia.
I care. I don't want to care, but I do. Friggin' nostalgia.
XDXD! Indeed, indeed. Sega has brainwashed us. Still Sonic has definitely dropped in my all-time favorite series. He's like 6th now. Was once 1st[very briefly]/2nd.
I care a teeny tiny bit.
I've stopped reading the comics (of which I was an avid reader for about a decade). I have Sonic Chronicles but I never beat it. I haven't gotten around to Sonic Unleashed.
But there's still something about the Sonic characters that I enjoy. And I know that if used right then they can be pretty cool. Sonic Chronicles occasionally hits the mark and Sonic X often does as well. SEGA needs to focus on the core characters without bringing in an army of peripheral characters or gameplay gimmicks and then they can make Sonic a franchise worth being interested in.
I still care.
I haven't bought a single game since Advance 3 (Rush, Rivals 2, and Secret Rings were gifts) but I still care about the blue hedgie. I'll still look up the old comics every so often, watch the OVA, play the old games, etc. And of course, I'll still draw Sonic.
To those who say no, how many of you jumped for joy when Sonic was announced in Brawl?
I care, damnit.
And I'll never understand people who don't care about something but still hang around anyway. >_>

I didn't. I thought it was pretty cool that he finally got in as i wanted him in melee when i actually liked the series but i wouldn't say i was ecstatic about it. I might not be too fussed about him being in Brawl though because I do not want a Wii at all, so couldn't care less about Brawl anyway.
I do have opinions on how the games should be, but if a game actually turned out like I'd like I won't necessarily rush out and buy it. Similarly I won't rush out and buy even Tomb Raider (the biggest series of games in my childhood, along with Lemmings) any more. I played the demo, and it just wasn't the same as the older games. I've grown up, moved onto different things and they just aren't quite keeping up. These days I view Sonic like I view most games series. It's just there you know, it's just happening to go down the pan right now and could be better.
That said, I do need to go and get myself Lemmings 2 again still. Adored that game.
Also V2, I don't hang around for the sonic. I hang around for the community, and the chats (mostly IRC). I've always been a bit chatter first forummer second 😮
This place actually has one of the better communities I've seen, and I just can't leave just because I don't like Sonic. Beleive me, I tried around the end of '04. Cut off all my sonic related online communities, including my dA account which i admit was pretty popular. But I just kept wondering what THS, HSW, Chaos, CJ, OTB and the other older chatters were doing and I just ended up coming back. And getting together with THS. Best move I've made ever.
I care, damnit.

Perhaps because even if this site was a result of the Sonic series, the community it's attracted doesn't have to revolve around the Sonic series to stay around? If I recall correctly, not all users are even here because of Sonic HQ; IIRC, some users like Jimro weren't even here because of Sonic HQ but were here because of a mention of this forum on other forums. Even then, I don't think a community needs to be specifically attached to what it came from in the past.
Anyway, I slightly care about the Sonic series, though I don't think about it much; it's probably more of a nostalgia thing though. I've missed a lot of games, so there will probably be a fair bit to explore even when I'm more inclined to explore it...
I got here because of Megaman HQ (a series which I do still care about (at least more than Sonic))
That said, I've pretty much lost interest in all things Sonic so I plopped a no down.
I still care about Sonic. I just kind of stayed away from any 3D games until Unleashed came out simply because I like 2D a lot better. Sonic Chronicles was ok, the horrid music and insane difficulty in some battles kind of marred it for me.
Oh, and CT, you forgot to mention Shade from Chronicles as well, and the fairy from Sonic Shuffle is Lumina Flowlight.
I think the reason people don't care anymore is because Sonic really hasn't had a good game in a whole bunch of years. People debate it's since Sonic 3, others debate it's when the whole thing went 3D. Either way, the blue blur has been in a slump. I don't really thing adding two or three new characters every game really helped, although some have stuck around for far longer than they should have (*cough*Shadow*cough*). Add to the whole mix ridiculous storytelling in some of those games and poor gameplay/controls/whatever and it's a recipe for disaster.
Sonic Unleashed I consider somewhat of a step in the right direction. The story wasn't really ridiculous, but some of the gameplay was kind of weak. In particular, the Werehog's horrid jumping and the whole game being QTE-trigger happy. (which is one reason why I am NEVER playing that final level again)
I care about Tails - does that count?
But seriously... I still care, but I'm jaded. I care about the overall reputation of the franchise, but the current crop of next-gen console games has made me completely apathetic to them as titles.
I suppose that you could say that I care about the bits of the franchise that I thought worked, and I care about why they worked. And I quietly hope that some marketing guru'll come to the same conclusion someday, too.
*Sighs*
I care... but I don't want to. I wish I could stop caring about the series because I know it'll never get better. Why did I even like the series to begin with? Possibly due to Sonic's percieved personality. Me being one who lacks in self-esteem, I like characters who exert it, even rather excessively like Sonic does. Just something about it that I like. I wish the series would get better, I really do, but I've lost hope in the series being at least halfway decent. Notice I really don't post in the South Island Forum? That's why. I lurk there constantly, but rarely will you find me post there at all...
Anyway, I wish the series well but I honestly don't believe it will get better period.
