Remember that series Fullmetal Alchemist? The one Pepperidge came in out of nowhere to announce that everyone absolutely had to watch? Y'know, back in 2004 or so? (Christ, has it been five years already?) Rather popular manga/anime about two young brothers in a world of the magical science of alchemy, on a quest to fix their bodies after they royally messed them up performing human alchemy in an attempt to revive their dead mother? Yeah, that one. Well, since the anime wasn't a very faithful adaptation of the manga it was based on (although given those circumstances, it still came out really badass), they've decided to give it another go.

Enter Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (English title; AFAIK, the Japanese title for this new series is the same as the original, which oughta prove to be really confusing). New series, apparently only 13 episodes in length (which is... pretty damn short, considering the lengthy, 51-episode plot of the original anime). This time they're shooting for a more faithful adaptation of the manga (ie: not wildly branching off after that one guy gets offed). And, in what seems to be a rather unique situation, Funimation (the people who did the dub of the original series) is subbing the new shows within a week of their original airdate in Japan. The first episode's already subbed! (Although the streaming speed is absolutely pathetic; it took me a good hour of waiting before I could watch 20 minutes of the show straight without it pausing for a few seconds to load another one second of footage - enough to get me to the credits before it caught up.) It's pretty damn good - more of the same, really, albeit starting over again from the beginning. Less filler, hopefully (although the original series was pretty light on filler, to be honest...).

Thus far, my only gripe is that the composer isn't the same. The style of Akira Senju (had to look that name up <_<) is pretty damn close, mind, and it definitely works, but Fullmetal Alchemist without Michiru Oshima's "Brothers" is going to be damn weird. But then, if they're trying to distinguish this new series from the former one, a different composer'd be one way to do it...

13 episodes? It's not going to be much of an adaptation considering the manga is approaching 100 chapter and every chapter has about as much content as an episode. Is it just a first season?

My guess is they're giving it a trial run for a season, and if it gets a good reception they'll renew it for more seasons to adapt more books. I don't know, I might get into this, after ignoring the original even after all the good words everyone's said about the series.

*shrugs* 13 was just a number I came across fetching information about the series. It seemed abnormally short to me, too. I'll wager it ends up being quite a bit longer than that... although hopefully it, too wraps everything up before too long, like the original series, Death Note or similar, and unlike, say, InuYasha or similar.

If this thing follows the manga closely, AWESOME. The run-up to the endgame in the manga has been phenomenal so far.

But what I'm wondering is "where's my new Black Lagoon season?", dammit!

i saw the first episode the other day on a different website to the link you linked to.. and i loved it! it's much closer to the manga, although for the first episode it's technically 'filler' as something happens that never happened in the comics (but i feel that's fine, as they used it to introduce nearly all the major characters in a way that didn't feel out of place, and concepts that only appeared later in the manga. they even include young hohenheim in the opening credits!)

ed looks a bit younger here too, so i'm hoping they're properly show him growing up as the anime continues. i also liked the little touch of colouring the lineart for his hair a brown-gold colour. his hair really does look golden now. ^^

While we're at it, never watched Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Excel Saga, Gurren Lagann or a number of other must-see anime.

I don't watch much TV. <_<

I watched it. And attempted to understand it several times and couldn't. Most likely I'm just not perverted enough for FLCL. 😛

That's it, take a sabbatical from your job, stockpile some food, lock yourself indoors and start downloading, sir.

Awesome about the new anime, I hope it does follow the manga as from what I read on Wikipedia the manga seems pretty cool, but I don't like to read subtitled show, so I'll wait until it's released in the States or whatever. As far as FLCL goes, it always seemed to stupid so I couldn't get into it.

Watched it on a site that actually had it subbed like, a day after it aired in Japan earlier this week. I really like it. Although I haven't read much of the manga beyond the first volume, so I don't really know what direction this one is going to take.

I watched it. And attempted to understand it several times and couldn't.

What's to understand? It's a typical coming-of-age story of a boy, his robot dishwasher that came out of the inter-dimensional channel in his head and is the embodiment of an extra-dimensional being of intense supernatural power, and his housekeeper slash rogue galaxy police alien who wants the power to steal the cosmos for herself.

Oh, and... I guess... some sexual innuendos concerning puberty, what it means to be an adult, blah blah.

Most likely I'm just not perverted enough for FLCL. 😛

You know what you have to do now, cowboy.

FLCL sometimes shouldn't be understood, only experienced. Alcohol helps though.

Episode 7 is just getting to the point at which the anime went independent. Obviously the 13 episodes can't be the whole series. Any more info?

So, am I. I've watched clips of Shippuden on YouTube and find it hard to watch both the words and actions; so, I don't want to watch this until it's dubbed.

It needs the brothers music. Of course, I can't think of many scenes of the manga, which is not nearly as gut wrenching, to use it.

It's definitely not 13 epsiodes; there are already titles for episodes up to 14...

Bully for them, honestly. I've been really enjoying this revamp; hopefully they get to the new stuff soon (and they probably will, given the major event happening next episode).

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeee!

Damn, shame about some of the VA replacements. Scar and Alphonse were pretty much perfect IMHO. I can understand having to replace Al since his VA went through puberty and all.

The new guys have a high standard to live up to. Bracing for complaints and internet drama.

EDIT: oops, wrong va. fixed

I'm watching. Actually, I watched through the original during the past few months and I'm up to date on FMA:B (I think anyway, Is 41 the most recent?).

(WARNING: Train-of-conciousness rant of my thoughts to follow. Enter at your own risk:)

I watched the dub of the original, so it's interesting seeing how the sub voices compare without having the watch the original all over again.

There are some moments I recognize that the original series handled better, but it sort of felt like the new series is just glancing over the similarities to get to the new material.

Me mentally comparing the two damages Roy's motivations in Brotherhood, though, as they gave his dark regret to Scar.

Some of the little characterization differences are interesting to see, like the relationship between Ed and Winry. They're very sibling-esque in the old show (to Ed anyway), but there's more tension in Brotherhood. A good example of the difference is Ed's reaction to Al's "We even used to fight over who would marry Winry!"

FMA? "*chuckles* We did, really?"

FMA:B? He gets flustered and embarrassed. ^^

Hey, but look at me shipping. That was never the emphasis anyway.

Some of the new action scenes are incredible (not to knock FMA): I particularly enjoyed Wrath vs. Greed.

It sort of seems like the homunculus deaths felt much more significant in the original.

I liked how forceful the show was at stressing the origins of the Homunculi are not the same as the original; I wouldn't want to be confused about that.

Still funny as hell. "Solly, don't speak your ranguage!"*dances off*

And, I'm done. o.o

Ya know, I know they have to replace Al's VA, but it will still feel weird hearing someone else. Anyway, does anybody know where I can find clips of what Al's new VA, Maxey Whitehead, sounds like; I've tried YouTube and couldn't find nothing.

Just finished watching the last of the subs, and I have to say this show really won me over. When it first started, I was okay with the manga having its own story and the TV having its own story and kind of thought Brotherhood was unnecessary, but the show delivered in a big way.
