I recently had a revelation that I do a lot better at the gym if I'm listening to battle music from turn-based RPGs, and was wondering if people could recommend some tracks to me so I can diversify my portfolio. If you have a link to where I can download/purchase it, even better.
First thing that comes to mind is Skies of Arcadia...
Skies of Arcadia Battle Theme 1
Battle Theme 2
Valuan Armada Battle Theme
Boss Themes (1st one is default. 1:24-1:53 plays when you're doing badly and 1:53 onward plays when you're pwning.)
Ship Battle Theme 1 (It's turn-based so I think counts...)
Ship Battle theme 2
Gigas Battle Music
Zelos' Theme
Ramirez Final Battle Theme Song
*dives into his music montage playlists on Youtube*
Mass Effect 2: The End Run
The Legend of Zelda, Spirit Tracks: Malladus Beast
Blue Dragon: The Seal is Broken
Super Mario RPG: Fight against an Armored Boss
Pokemon Stadium: Mewtwo Battle
Final Fantasy VIII: Maybe I'm a Lion
Disgaea: One With the Stars
Persona 3 FES: Darkness
Golden Sun: Saturos Battle
Seiken Densetsu 3: The Sacrifice (III)
However, a lot of my favorite ones are non-RPG:
Iji: Tor
No More Heros: We Are Finally Cowboys
Super Street Fighter II TURBO: Guile's Theme
Ninja Gaiden Black: Doku Battle
Punch-Out!!: Von Kaiser
Punch-Out!!: Soda Popinski
Punch-Out!!: Mr. Sandman
Dance Dance Revolution: Tsugaru OR-IF-IS Mix
For ones you can't really find online (i.e. most video game soundtracks), you can use the free version of RealPlayer to rip them straight from Youtube and then convert them to MP3. Others (like Mass Effect and Final Fantasy) can be bought via iTunes or AmazonMP3.
PSX: Actually, the music that kicked the revelation into effect wasn't actually VG music. It was the first Homestuck album. But I tested it later with the FFX battle music, and it was sound. '
I actually have an entire theory as to why this works so well. I'm currently reading "Reality is Broken" by Jane McGonigal (which everyone in this forum should read) and one of the things it talks about is recreating the feeling of "epicness" gamers get when they play games, but in other situations.
Let's face it, spending an hour on an elliptical isn't a very epic situation, but I think the music is tying it all together for me.
For me, Final Fantasy VI comes to mind.
<3 dancing mad
Legend of Dragoon
Xenogears
FFIX
Phantasy Star IV
Phantasy Star II
Wow, trying to narrow this down to a few(?) items and one song per game series was a bit of a chore. A self-imposed limit, but if I didn't, I'd be here all day. >.>
Persona 4: The Almighty
Disgaea 2: White Tiger
Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn: Wisdom of Ages
Valkyrie Profile: The Incarnation of Devil
Hexyz Force: Desperation
Riviera The Promised Land: The Last Battle
Valkyria Chronicles: Final Decisive Battle
Tales of the Abyss: Meaning of Birth
And a few non-RPG ones that are extremely kickass
Bayonetta: The Greatest Jubilee
Casltevania Harmony of Despair: Heart of Fire
Blazblue: Awakening the Chaos
and one of the things it talks about is recreating the feeling of "epicness" gamers get when they play games, but in other situations.
*go to GameStop*
*ask clerk for a copy of Dragon Quest VI*
*points to guy about to leave store and says he just bought the last copy*
*look over*
*guy's just standing there, admiring the box*
*he looks up*
*eyes meet*
Yeah, I can see that.
You guys mentioning Persona, but not the infinitely better Nocturne or Digital Devil Saga? For shame.
Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne - Fierce Battle
Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne - Battle - The Labyrinth Of Amala
Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne - Battle - Town
Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne - Last Boss Battle (After Transformation)
Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne - Dante Battle
Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne - Boss Battle
Digital Devil Saga - Hunting - Comrades
Digital Devil Saga - Hunting - Compulsion
Digital Devil Saga - Big Battle
Digital Devil Saga - Hari-Hara (Oh sweet merciful, thank you for this track!)
Digital Devil Saga - Hari-Hara - The Second Movement
Digital Devil Saga 2 - Heroic Battle
Digital Devil Saga 2 - Hunting - Betrayal
Digital Devil Saga 2 - Battle For Survival
Digital Devil Saga 2 - Battle - Rare Devil
Digital Devil Saga 2 - Divine Identity
And despite having nothing to do with turn based RPGS, and just because it's fantastic.
