Haiti Earthquake

I still can't believe those are actual photos. I know Haiti is kind of poor but what did they construct these houses out of?! Getting the year off to a great start...meh

Still can't wrap my head around it...

Haiti still haven't recovered from the Hurricane years before. This is just another of what seems to be a series of devastating blow's on the Haitian people.

My prayers go out to them.

Houses are built of cement mixed with some gravel and water. They do not use the blocks we use in Puerto Rico, Cuba, Dominican Republic and most of the Caribbean. 80% of the population in the island is living in poverty. No money means built what you can with what you can and try to live as best as possible. Port-au-Prince was hit pretty badly but so were the suburbs and surrounding towns.

My heart goes out to my neighbors in Haiti. My university is putting together a campaign to help with whatever we can including money, food and medical supplies. Since we're a medical university and hospital, our senior students (meds and nursing) are trying to provide direct help.

My bf lives in DR and he said everyone felt the ground moving and people were running out of buildings. I freaked out since I couldn't get a hold of anyone down there but thanks to facebook I got in touch after about 20-30 minutes of panic. Thankfully no one got hurt.

I was going to ask, anyone know what happened on the other side of Hispaniola? Hidoi, I think you've answered that, thanks.

Please watch this video.

I will be donating shortly, I can't give a lot while I'm unemployed sadly, but I know I can spare some.

Those who are employed, if your employer has a charitable programme, it may be worth speaking to them. My firm announced yesterday that they would be matching staff donations to the Haiti appeal.

I know its a bit late in me saying this, but it really is a tragedy that this occurred. Also, opinions on Pat Robertson's (Mostly Negative I presume >.>) comments?

did you guys hear about the woman caught looting cheap pictures? The police shot her in the head. Theres an image of her corpse but I'm not sure if I should post it. It's graphic.

I don't know what I'm more shocked about. The fact that someone shot her or that there are still police running around. I thought that Haiti was pure anarchy right now?

Aparently the police have shown up now. And shooting their own people... I mean I don't see how some cheap wal-mart quality stolen pictures could have really provoked the need to shoot the girl dead.
